Let's hit the snow!
Today on Dirt lifestyle we take our Jeep gladiator eco diesel on a Snow run! Snow wheeling is not for everyone and lots of caution should be taken when planning these trips. But with the right gear and people around you these are an outstanding way to experience offroad culture. We definitely find what we are looking for, but we also end up have a few accidents. Not all snow is created equal, and when temperatures hover around freezing it makes for very slick conditions. The Colder the snow, the better the traction in most cases. The coldest it got up there was 30 deg F so the hills were pretty challenging. That said, everyone is OK! Just some dented bumpers and broken fairleads. It doesn't matter who you are, we all will have an offroad fail at some point, but being prepare will dictate how you will tell the story later. I hope you enjoy the video! It is difficult to overstate just how hard these videos are to make so bear with me lol. I'm just a regular dude doing his best!

This highlights why regardless of how capable your rig is always go in a group. Glad everyone made it out ok. Rigs can be fixed
@mikewhitman745
@mikewhitman745 2 года назад
Huh, I actually think it would have been better to not be in a group. Then the guy in front can stop or go whenever they want and not get hit by people behind you not paying attention. Also the people who will not go out because no one will go with them kind of irk me. But for me getting out in the woods and on the trails isn't about bringing people with me, it's about getting away.

Never wheel alone. Engine stall and doesn't turn back on, you'd better have some zero degree clothes and sleeping accommodations.

@@mikewhitman745 until something goes wrong and you need help. Even in Nate's video very capable rigs were stuck to the point that they needed help. Personally I would rather deal with a little body damage than dying of hypothermia

If you're willing to let other people's schedules and baggage define your life that's fine, I just don't think it's that big a deal going out on your own and everyone that says don't do that probably never tried it or were unprepared. Majority of my wheeling has been by myself and, gasp!, I've run chainsaws out there while being alone! I've also winched myself out of bad spots, fixed broken suspension and went in with a v8 and limped out on 4. I'm not saying a group is a bad idea but anyone that says don't go by yourself ever I have less respect for.
@TheOverlandGolfer
@TheOverlandGolfer 2 года назад
@@mikewhitman745 no one needs your respect. Just because you haven't had an emergency that would require another person to assist you, doesn't mean it won't ever happen. Glad you've been fortunate but to dismiss what has been a wheeling safe guard with this comment is irresponsible. Everyone's done some easy wheeling alone, but this videos type of adventure is extremely dangerous on your own. To each thier own.

*Strong language warning in this video. What a great day! If you plan on hitting some snow in your rig I have a few bits of knowledge I would like to share with you. First off, Not all snow is created equal!!! Hey Nate! How does your gladiator do in the snow? It's like asking how it does in dirt lol. Wet dirt? Dry dirt? Dirt in the desert? Dirt in the mountains? Snow has many forms too. I have found the snow here in the Washington mountains to be much slicker than many other places because our snow is hardly frozen. Snow at 32 degrees is not the same as snow at plus 10 or minus 10. Ask anyone from Alaska and they will tell you that you can drive a car with good tires down the Hwy if the snow is cold enough but when they get a "warm front" you can struggle with a 4x4 truck if the snow is close enough to 32 degrees. The snow you see in today's video changes a lot with elevation. Much easier to drive on at higher elevation but the hill everyone slid down was ice cream. The lowest temp I saw all day was 30 F which is bad news if you don't have bead locks. This brings me to my next bit of knowledge to share. Tire Pressure is 90% of your success in this stuff! 10 psi is not low enough unless you are in a VERY heavy rig. In my experience 5 is a good place to start in your average Jeep or Toyota but I highly recommend going lower. Chains are a GREAT option as well. My gladiator was at 1 psi in the rear and 4 psi in the front. If you don't have the right wheels to go this low or you aren't comfortable going this low I Highly recommend avoiding steep, dangerous places like the mountains in Washington. Or perhaps avoid deep snow all together. This is not the same situation as a couple inches in your driveway. Deep snow should be respected BUT if you are prepared this is about as much fun as you can handle in a 4x4!!! Thank you Yankum Ropes for sponsoring today's video! You can buy these ropes on our website! www.thedirtlifestyle.com

Also, to add to Nates explanation, air pressure changes with elevation. So if you aired down to 7 or 8 at the bottom, you will be back up around 10 or 11 after roughly 2000ft of elevation gain and losing traction again. Just remember that if you’re aired down really low at the top then you should air back up before you get all the way down because your pressure will also go down as you leave the mountain.

I live in the town where you all met up and started up the mountain and I go up into those hills quite often. It’s cool to see you made it up to the rock pit at the top and that last hill is no joke, it can be a tricky one. Also, thank you for not saying exactly where you guys went, that place is getting super popular and clogs up easily and often. Nice work on the video.

@@MrMrsregor you sound like 5 y.o. kid. what do you mean "our spots" you own the place? maybe it's you who is overcrowding it. how did you find that spot? nobody was hiding it from you. there are hundreds of beautiful trails in the area. so go ahead and put a gate or set up a camp there and protect it with your life.
@MrMrsregor
@MrMrsregor 2 года назад
@@piotrtrocki3842 i sound like a five year old.?. i was just thanking this guy for being considerate and you get your butt hurt and start whining and bitching... i find these places on maps and while out exploring while i always have. i dont rely on social media to give me ideas or tell me where i should go. i only thanked him for not advertising these places, because i have been doing this shit for over 25 years, and literally every place that gets publicized, gets very busy, trashed, and then gated. where i live we had thousands of miles of offroad trails in "our" (our=we the people of the united states that like to enjoy our public land and not profit greedily by advertising nice places for my own monetary gain) national forest, until people on social media popularized the trails so much that they are ALL now "permanently closed due to over use and trash" I am all about public use land, but when youtubers, bloggers, and Instagramers do their best to publicize "nice, quiet, secret, places", then they are no longer nice, quiet, secret, places, they get shut down for "over use" and "over crowding". i am all about sharing information, but advertising to as many people as possible for notoriety and a thumbs up is selfish and greedy. you totally missed my point. I dont want any gates, i dont want anyone to feel the need to protect our trails with their life. but i have been around long enough to see places get too much attention and they all get shut down. Nate here on Dirt lifestyle even talks about this exact same thing in one of his videos. so, no need to get so butt hurt, my comment was not a direct insult to you all that need things to be spoon fed to them because they cant find cool shit. its just a compliant to nate

Watched this because it reminded me of the years of growing up in Eastern Washington and belonging to a 4wd club. Before snatch em straps. We had good inch a half...rope encased in old firehouse. We also didn't have bead lock rims, or wide tires. Good tall sidewall skinny SNOW tires [used tubes to allow us to air down ]. Some studded and some not. But we all carried and chained up. We would line every up and link each other together and drop into low range. Some rigs had lockers and some didn't. Lockers in snow can sometimes cause more problems...pushing and pulling in snow can make steering tough. Road captains kept the pace and spacing and called the run early in the event of foul weather. To get down during daylight. This was in the 70's and many of us were prior military and used to being in convoys. Atleast damage was minimal... Sadly these new vehicles have expensive parts. Snow wheeling can be fun. But always unpredictable lots of caution and safety first so everyone has fun.

All the collisions are an example of why in certain situations you go one at a time to clear an obstacle before the next one goes. This applies to going up steep hills and especially when going downhill in slick conditions. Glad everyone made it out without injury and only somewhat minor damage.

I love snow wheelin! I am too scared to take my totally rust free tj on the salty highways though so I’ll just enjoy through your channel.

Think it’s time to ditch that Tacoma. That Gladiator is putting it to shame. Send some of that snow to Utah please.
