I saw this for the first time at the NEC bike show at launch, it seemed impossibly small compared to the Fireblade. Some time later I had a demo on one and couldn't believe the acceleration, it was amazing at the time, super fast ! Its crazy that they are now 26 yrs old this year 2024. If I had one I would likely refresh the suspension and use it on fine days only. Lovely classic full on sport bike 🙂, ps by chance had a ride on one again recently..... woooosh..... its still ridiculously fast and a classic now ! Madness!!! In a good way 😂

hi mate out of curiosity do you mean a yam dealer street fightered it? I done one of my 5jjs to street fighter myself and it was a total weapon back then was the usual jets/cans/filter but had a head my uncle got me from V&M it was prodrive believe itnor not that done the re-machining and came back to V&M and they would change the Cam shafts etc to suit what racing the bike was doing at the time. I was whooping blackbirds and even beating zx12 and Busas short shifting it mate and it shocked a lot of people how easily it beat them even over 150mph. The figures i sort of remember is it dynod at 140 on the button at the wheel before the 1st stage of work got done , then it was dynod again at 152 or 154 with jet kit, half system (kept the ex-up section for obvious torque reasons for street use) and a very very early edition BMC filter that they actually never sold as an R1 filter unless you phoned them and asked for a fitment. After the new head was on it was dynoing 160 or near but i think we backed it off to 155wheel with a ton of torque and i had to go back again as it got a bit smelly where i couldnt find Optimax (what v-power was called at the time) and when they leaned it out it was up a few HP peak i thing the end figure was 157 wheel 170 Flywheel a load of torque and no stink when i had lesser ron fuel in it. Absolute weapon sir even now it would beat MTs and all that like they were nothing. People wont believe that a street fightered up sportsbike from late 90 would spank their latest 900/1000 sports tourer or naked or streetfighter. Even the big KTMs now mine would have beat im not kidding it would beat my last KTM no sweat and would have beat my 990SMR on part throttle

I took one out when they were first launched (I had a year old RRV at the time) absolutely blew me away.. arrived back at the dealers giggling and shaking with excitement and adrenaline. Only bike that came close to my first ride out on a new 350LC years earlier. Awesome bike

Excellent review 😉 . Just dug mine out after 15 years of being sensible lol. I have full ohlins on mine and seriously dropped bars that used to give me tingly fingers if I wasn't going fast enough. Awesome bike on a well maintained road and just scary on anything else. I miss the quieter roads we used to have in the 90s 😞

Got to get another R1, but probably a 2000 MY as they were slightly better, often cheaper and still faithfull to the 98 vision. Thinking back the end of the 90's was a glorious period as bikes were cheaper than any other point in history. I got a new one in 2000 for just 6.5K which meant it was nuts to go for an older used one at the time.

Nice vid mate, thanks! I've also got a 1999 one same as this but in red and white. Bought it very cheap off a friend 8 years ago and I don't intend to sell it till I'm too old to physically swing a leg over it - love it. I do all maintenance etc. on my bike myself and I've been through every nut and bolt, replaced the clutch and all bearings seals etc. I put it back to largely stock with just a couple of concessions like 5JJ (2000-2001) mirrors to better see past shoulders/elbows, braided brake lines and most importantly, I also installed KTech fork internals plus a Nitron rear shock, all correctly set up and sprung for my weight. This totally transformed the handling versus original suspension, the bike is so solid and stable in all road conditions now... steering damper not required, even when giving it some serious beans. I have zero interest in the newer bikes.....sure the latest R1s are so much more powerful but of course they are stacked with rider aids to manage it. IMO these early bikes are still plenty fast, especially when you have zero traction control, ABS etc. But I like that its actually all down to the rider, not some electronic nannies...keeps it real! And subscribed :)

Had a 99 in this color. I weigh 245 and I am 6’3”. It was amazingly easy to drive, never gave me a problem with the gearbox. I took it on a very long straightaway with the intention of going 175, thinking that would be tough. I got up to 178 and couldn’t believe how much it had left. I backed off at 181-2ish maybe a lil more, it was a quick glance while I backed down. It cornered so nicely too. Never ever ran poorly, ever, ran like a sewing machine as they say. I was told it had 140 from the factory, did he say 150hp in this video?
@bigduphusaj162

clocks would show 185-186mph when Yam claimed 177mph top speed on them. GPS ive personally never had on an early model R1 but i know of a late 5jj that done 182gps was flicking 181-182 completely stock even exhaust and i think was at the 12k mile mark as he put the GPS on directly after doing a major service. I had done the valve clearance check on it when he done the run at a place called Crail in scotland prior to the track having its own speed traps they all borrowed the GPS reader back then. It genuinely done 181-182 and ive had people argue 180 max, no this exact stock bike done 182mph stock i know for a fact it did. There wasnt even a jet kit or even a can on it. Completely stock bar the Metzelers i think they were the earlier rensports and the clocks showed 186 when he was doing a genuine 182. Rapid machine man even today its not to be messed with.

@@bigduphusaj162100% agree. People forget just how fast 1000cc sport bikes are, even from the mid 90's but especially from the advent of the R1 on. It changed everything - vertically stacked transmission unit and shorter chassis/wheelbase made everything lighter. The power was a bonus. They dynoed about 140hp to the wheel factory, often 150 with a few minor mods such as filter/airbox/silencer/jetting or EFI tuning. For anyone saying 150hp isn't enough for the street you're either riding in the midrange up to 7k or you're simply living on borrowed time. Most 600's from the late 90's up make 95hp+ to the wheel which is way more than enough, just without the fat midrange of a thousand.

@bigduphusaj162
@bigduphusaj162 8 месяцев назад
upgraded box as in the longer ratiod revised 5jj box or did you get the BPd box with the race dogs etc? That modded dogged box they had for BSB was an eye opener i never used the clutch outside take off even using the 1-2 shift to restrict the end of 1st gear wheelie i only had to maintain the throttle position maybe backed off a few degrees to get 2nd gear home in the sweet spot so then i only had to concentrate on the small amount of twist needed to put the thing back on FOT or if the front was staying up i could just leave it on the exact same maintenance throttle to get the front to land enough to steer in a slower speed bend. Modded dog box combined with fork internals and resprung rear shock on on a road going R1 made these utterly humiliate even the race Honda and Ducati bikes of the times on track road or anywhere they were stupid enough to dare race you. People would laugh when i spanked them and basically tell me i was riding the bike they wanted next and openly admitted they liked getting an absolute whooping as they then knew it was as fast as what its reputation quickly suggested. People think H2 and whatever are a modern day power balance hike hahahaha when the 4xv landed there was a moment of silence for every motorbike that had went before it. A proper changing of the guard happened

How bad are the gear boxes on these bad boys? Thinking of getting one but kinda scared of transmission problems that would pretty total the bike. And what years are affected only 1998-1999? or all models up to 2003? the 1998-2001 r1's are the best looking bikes ever made in my opinion.
@bigduphusaj162
@bigduphusaj162 8 месяцев назад
They are solid. Its abused ones that had the bushed front sproket swapped out by a bad rider who also changed the good front sprokets to £14 daemon tweaks ones for no reason that got issues. Bad or inexperienced riders who bought them would repratedly false nuteral from the violent 1 to 2nd shift and rev the nuts off it in nuteral before finding 2nd gear and ring a tooth off of 2nd gear. They would all blame the shift forks n dogs but anyone whos raced 4xv or 5jj and opened them up to mod them for racing or fix them knows the truth. The 5jj model (which this one looks like as the 4xv is the original but the 5jj is the revamp of the original) is the stronger one gearbox wise and has revised ratios to prevent the nasty 1st into 2nd gear wheelies. It reduced them greatly but this bike just likes to wheelie on the power sir if you even touch a bump or small dip in the road under full power it will lift aggressively and stay up till you change gear. Front end was spectacularly fast steering was the same as the original R6 if you put the 17s on the front of the R6 but like the original R6 it loves a tank slapper so my advice would be to get one and if the rapid tank slappers over bumps etc terrifies you then get an adjustable steering damper and leave it on low but just enough that it stops you tensing up and puffing your pants when it all kicks off. If you go to hard with the steering damping you lose the bikes feeling of agility and it wont recover from front end wash outs if you plan on racing it. Ive had every popular sports bike since 1993 and i mean every one of them even up to my current genuine H2C with the Topgun mods from factory and 2023 R1. The 4xv and 5jj are one of the best motorcycles ever created and my personal favourite motorcycle of all times alongside my beloved KX500. I had 5 in total back in the day 3 road bikes (one 4xv and two 5jj) and 2 race bikes (a 4xv then a 5jj) and looking to buy another one again now to sit near my minted LC250, 5VY R1, K2 and K4 gixxer 1 and use the all on alternate weeks over the rather short summer we get here in Scotland. My new bikes are cool and all that but id rather be on an early carbed R1 they are very special indeed. The original R6 is a great bike too see the refreshed original one with the LED back lights and revised piston crowns, that thing was a weapon and can be tuned easily to stay with or beat modern 600s. One of the best handling bikes of all times to this day without any shadow of a doubt.

the trans was fine it was the bad riders who didnt know how too wheelie and who changed front sprokets to a non-bushed one that usually destroyed 4xv box. 5jj they had sorted it but you could still lose a tooth or two on 2nd gear if you repeatedly jammed it into second when you accidentally false nuteralled and revved the thing to the moon foolpwed by the forced 2nd shift. The shift forks were fine mate. I raced the things and owned them.

Huge differences, they are two totally different bikes really. 2004 saw the first big switch from the original R1's design. Too many changes to list but one of the most notable was the switch from carbs in fuel injection. 5vy feels like a big 600 top endy needs kept at or above 10k. This doesnt, these feel more old school carb torque at anything above 4500k rpm. 5vy you sit even more over the tank with the low rists that this and 5vy bigger people like 6ft+ will eventually benefit from the fact it just feels like an old racer pedal bike you know the ones the bars bent round the side so you had to lean right over them to ride them, that very feeling you got the first time you rode a racer pedal bike that was far to big for you as a kid, yeah thats exactly how 5vy feels the first time you ride it. Both outrageously brilliant and game changers as well as all time greats. Both will make you terrified and happy in equal amounts.
@bigduphusaj162

adding to last commemt if you are a good ridera to the point you can ride in advanced group at track (not boasting but i raced all these bikes for over 3 decades now and maybe done 150k road miles on various R1s) the 5vy is going to be the faster bike by a decent amount but if you arent at minimum that level then they will likely be as fast as each other even if you did do quite a few track days. You can get the 4xv/5jj genesis lump to put out 155 wheel no problem at all reliably with very little cash, the 5VY is gunna be 157-160bhp at the wheel stock but more top endy so wont feel any faster than a well tuned older genesis in the 4xv/5jj. Once you start messing about with the 5vy though they can even be made to beat new stock 1000cc with 190 wheel. One of the fastest "run what you brung" open days at santa pod bikes i seen that was completely ridable as a road bike and was on Vpower pump fuel and a set of michelin 2CTs was a late 5vy model that had been tuned to 190 wheel and forks dropped through the yokes and strapped, it had stock swing arm and the big dude on it done back to back early 9s😂 like 9.05 and 9.07 if i remember. He was beating slightly stretched early model s1000rrs and humiliating even tuned H2s and all that. Total weapon but i dont know if youd want these bikes to be that fast acceleration it wouldnt make them be better bikes they arent drag bikes.

I actually fixed it over the winter had a broken tooth on second. Replaced 2nd and 6th. Kind of a messy job you gotta tear down the whole motor.
@bigduphusaj162
@bigduphusaj162 8 месяцев назад
yeah i hope you bought them with that issue and never caused it on both yourself😂? BTW the BS surrounding these gearboxes im glad im speaking to someone whos opened one to know what the problem is. People love to blame the forks on any box they keep blowing up but its the teeth get it and get jumpy too as they get worn, Its nothing to do with what people claimed it was. The real reason for the odd 4xv going was the unskilled riders struggling with the violent 1-2shift repeatedly finding a false nuteral and reving its nuts of only to repeatedly ram home 2nd till it found its way in at too high a rev. The other big issue was people fitting cheap daemon tweeks bought front sprokets that werent the same bushed type that came with the bike. Bike became smatchy with them even if you kept the tooth count the same it would shock load the box more than it was intended. These were the earliest cassette type gearboxes and bad riders or daemon tweeks tarts would ruine them. The teeth missing or shaved are 100% from over-revveed false nuteral 1-2 shifts. I raced these, had them on the road and worked on them for racing my uncle chris was the top man at V&N at the time and told me all the issues people were misdiagnosing about a year after they came out. Easy bike to work on btw very little on these 20v genesis lumps needs drilled, some things are tricky but its not to the point you dread doing them. Unlike BMW junk.

So you know fully know the true importance of this specific Yamaha, see the engineering brilliance behind the stacked cassete type gearbox it came about because Honda had started acting like they owned the place, Honda were paying massive money that simply wouldnt be allowed Today into patents on stuff they had no right to claim ownership of. They tried to patent and own the rights to everything using a crank balancer shaft im not bluffing here its the very reason all other manufacturers kept their gobs shut and let Yamaha, the world leaders and true No#1guys for harmonics pull down Hondas pants and give them a spanking. Another front that was being fought at the time was suspension, Ohlins (yamaha owned at the time and still a yamaha owned company but independent from them) were tasked to keep ducati and every other manufacturer within reach of Hondas massive Race division effort just by having better suspension parts. Suzuki deviated tried to make that silly rotary damper in the TL1000 frighten Honda but eventually were the ones to release the K2 Gixxer 1 so they dropped that nonsense and basically made a cheapened out R1 with 16v head, the same tech Yamaha had created and sold it to you with an ECU running the thing hotter 😂 I love the K2 Gixxer 1 but i regret handing my first 4xv in for it when it was getting all the magazine hype and MCN hype. K2 was brilliant and faster than a stock 4xv/5jj in a straight line. Everywhere else the R1 spanked it and a tuned R1 humiliated a tuned K2. Anyway, Honda out right acted like they were the the school bully l until Yamaha sorted them out with the full "bully gets his head flushed down the pan" moment. Honda the bully got reverse bullied in a way that would the end of Honda acting in a fashion where they thought they could throw cash at already existing tech and claim it as there own. The foothold Honda had for the crank patients they owned was gone overnight, nobody cared anymore as the entire crank assembly and gearbox had been changed for good just by design😂 This is why R1 became so popular back then that it was mind blowing because it was a middle finger to any manufacturer that thought that throwing money at a patent would buy future success. The gearbox on your later 4xv was fine it was the earlier ones that got issues with bad riders missung 1-2 shifts and/or fitting cheap non bushed front sproket or rider just not used to aggresive power wheelies. For the latter type unskilled wheelie rider you will destroy any bikes transmission and drive assembly if you cannot control wheelies enough to land them correctly, there hasn't been a single wheelie happy bike in history that a novice wont destroy even KX500 and CR500s a cack handed fake good rider would destroy the gearbox. The very best you can hope for in a case where youve bought a 'one bad owner wheelie bike' is if they haven't caused cracking at the neck of the frame or ovulated the head race and 1st and 2nd gear hold FOT. The R1 5jj they had the fully revised gearbox with different ratios so it wheelied less in 1-2 gear but would go a fair bit faster than the claimed 177mph. I know of a 2001 completely stock 5jj that GPSs 182mph. They were quoting like 172mph here in the UK at first to undersell it as it was prime "gentelmans agreement" time and still the lingering smell from Thatchers attempt to restrict motorbikes to 100bhp and have a full sized front reg plate (im not joking here btw) so Yamaha vastly undersold its performance here in UK even more than they did in Europe. Ironically the UK got the fastest ones as if you know about the Dyno kit for these bikes the wee brass inserts you had to push in didnt need to use on the UK R1 infact the dynojet kit came with 8 inserts and only 4 fitted the UK bike as the other 4 where the same diameter as what was on it. People in the UK quickly figured out the bike done 180mph so was then changed to a claimed 177mph like the rest of the world had been quoted😂 Theres a wee bit history of these bikes that not many will know or remember about this till they read this. The original R1 by defacto is one of the greatest motorcycles in recorded history. Cheers 🍻

The R1 was never the fastest production bike. Even the ZZR1100 had a higher top speed. The R1 was quick but not blackbird quick
@FrontWheelUp

I think I was referring to the fastest accelerating, apologies for the confusion. The original R1 made a simular amount of power as rhe ZZR and Blackbird but was considerably lighter.
@bigduphusaj162
@bigduphusaj162 8 месяцев назад
what utter nonsense sir. I had two zzr1100r both well tuned with the usual stage mods. I had one mid era blackbird that was modded within a week even brake system seperated mods etc. The 4xv and 5jj R1 battered both in acceleration all the way to 178mph and the blackbird although its speedo showed 196 and all this it was really 180mph. The 4xv they claimed 177-178mph in an era they undersold the bike out of fear of bans hence it was during the early "gentlemans agreement" era. A good 4xv done 178mph GPS and 5jj 182mph GPS with the clocks showing 186mph and not going by that reading. The first bike i owned that beat my 4xv and 5jj accelerating and top speed was Zx12 then busa son and they needed stage 1'd to beat the Yam on the 80-160mph mark. You can argue back but i raced motorbikes from 1991 till 2006 most notable three golds in the R6 cup out of 8 poduims during that period and my uncle ran V&N at the time he wasnt just a worker he was there from the start mate. 4XV R1 could beat zzr1100 like it was nothing man the original R6 gave them a whooping to 135mph hahahaha and Blackbird was the slowest fast bike ive ever owned and would be beat by the 1998 R6 till about 140mph 😂 Seriously mate you dont know what you are looking at. Cheers Edited: apologies mate i had wrote zzr1000 not 1100 i feel a right tool but edited rather than delete.
