5.3 In the Studio: Materials & Techniques of Mark Rothko - In the Studio: Postwar Abstract Painting
Want to know how some of the 20th century’s most celebrated artists made abstract paintings? This course offers an in-depth, hands-on look at the materials, techniques, and thinking of seven New York School artists, including Willem de Kooning, Yayoi Kusama, Agnes Martin, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko. Through studio demonstrations and gallery walkthroughs, you’ll form a deeper understanding of what a studio practice means and how ideas develop from close looking, and you’ll gain a sensitivity to the physical qualities of paint. Readings and other resources will round out your understanding, providing broader cultural, intellectual, and historical context about the decades after World War II, when these artists were active.
The works of art you will explore in this course may also serve as points of departure to make your own abstract paintings. You may choose to participate in the studio exercises, for which you are invited to post images of your own paintings to the discussion boards, or you may choose to complete the course through its quizzes and written assessments only.
Learners who wish to participate in the optional studio exercises may need to purchase art supplies. A list of suggested materials is included in the first module.
Learning Objectives:
Learn about the materials, techniques, and approaches of seven New York School artists who made abstract paintings.
Trace the development of each artist’s work and studio practice in relation to broader cultural, intellectual, and historical contexts in the decades after World War II.
Hone your visual analysis skills.
Use each artist’s works as a point of departure for making your own abstract paintings.

Really enjoyed this course, first course I have taken in this area of study. The course has given me an understanding of the artists covered and can't wait to see the artists paintings in person.,Well-designed course; interesting material, including optional readings. The studio demonstrations and accompanying exercises were very helpful to my own art work. Excellent overall; thank you.

Love watching and listening to you describe the "unwinding" of the painting methods used by the artists. I was under the impression that translucence occurs from light filtering through the layers of paint and bouncing off a white underpainting. Is that not so?

Nice job! very articulate and skilled teacher and conservator. Now let's talk about how Rothko translated that paint into emotional resonance?

Hello, might you be so kind as to list the additional elements used apart from the paint itself? Also, is there an oil that can be substituted for linseed oil? Perhaps olive oil?

If u try any types of oil u will get any types of paint.. the only problem with that for the ARTIST is drying the paint.. it’s a good technique..,. Using paint thinner isn’t going work in the long run cause it will fade away.

The endless waiting really puts me off trying oils, I’m sure I’d lose my mojo between coats. Which is a shame because I much prefer the colours and effects of oils. Acrylics are so brash.

Is there a way to do something approaching this with acrylics (as a high school student)? Maybe using mediums?

I am not a painter but look up tempera paint yourself, a putrid smell from decomposition is regularly mentioned but once dry it does seem pretty stable.

I’m sorry adding varnish to oil ? What does that do ? I’m very curious. Does anyone know ?
@mattbray_studio

adding varnish to the oil paint thins it (making it more fluid and transparent), adds gloss and makes it dry quicker

I feel like it keeps colors vibrancy without destroying it like what turp does, you may have to try different mediums and see the results

I love your behind the scenes look at artist's techniques and your explanations. It's funny. I put my paintings up against Rothko and people that don't know the difference invariably choose mine as the ones worth millions. Go figure.
