5.3 Swap Part 2: Follow-up on Power Steering

Part 2: power steering info.
After seeing my rack leaking a lot through the seals, I finally broke down and picked up the Turnone flow restrictor. What it does is reduce the flow rate to a more manageable rate for the 240sx rack.
The part number for these pumps ("canned ham") is PN1115. They also make one that already has the AN6 fitting on it so you dont need to buy both fittings. Hope this helps some people!

im replacing my pump, none of the pumps showed the EVO valve or even mentioned it, my pump did have it, is it ok to just put the pump on without the valve and put a new hose, or do i need the converstion fitting? AND does it effect the steering hooking the hose straight up to the pump, or wondering if i'm suppose to remove the valve off the old pump and install on the new one. thanks for the help.

Hey there. So I did this a while ago but if I remember correctly, the evo valve only does anything if its electronically controlled. You CAN leave the valve in, but then your pump output threaded connection will be facing the front of the engine instead of the rear. This didnt matter either way for me because I was making custom lines anyways. Also, the turnone flow restrictor is made to screw right into the pump, not the evo fitting, so if you use the restrictor, evo removal is needed anyways.

Can’t you just remove the pintle out of the solenoid to “eliminate” the EVO FUNCTION?
@cooperc240
@cooperc240 Год назад
Possibly? I'm not exactly sure and this was a long time ago. I do know that the power steering worked without touching the Evo stuff, because it wasn't actuated, but I still needed to reduce the flow for the 240sx rack.

This kind of garbage and migraine crap to work on with GM and all their wisdom decided to do this why I'm switching to Toyota. Mine has the same crap and it took me four days to change the pump and could write a book about what I've been through to get this thing back together. Shame on GM.

@@duwomaiishgabrielle9498 gotcha. I'm not sure what it's called exactly, I just know it's part of chevys "EVO" system. You'll have to do some research on that.

Did you have to take the pump out to replace the EVO actuator. Right now I cant turn my steering wheel at all so I think my EVO is stuck closed. I have already replaced my steering gear and I dont think its my steering pump because its not making anyone noises. If I can replace the EVO while the pump is on Id rather do that
@cooperc240
@cooperc240 5 лет назад
I left everything on, except the pressure hose obviously. But my access was made a bit easier because I had cut out fenders and tube front.
@cooperc240
@cooperc240 5 лет назад
However if you cant even turn the wheel, the problem maybe something else. Even if the pump wasnt working. You'd still be able to turn the wheel. Make sure the shaft coupler isnt hitting the header, and make sure the steering wheel lock isn't engaged lol
@typenn84
@typenn84 5 лет назад
@@cooperc240 Let me add to that, I can turn the wheel when the wheels are in the air (jacked up) but not while they are touching the ground. I have dont this both with the van on or off and its the same result. I was thinking it was a bad pump or something was clogged/blocking restriction
@cooperc240
@cooperc240 5 лет назад
When the vehicle is up in the air, the suspension drops down. It sounds like something may be binding on the steering hardware when its on the ground, like a tie rod or something.
@cooperc240
@cooperc240 5 лет назад
Even with my car off and no flow from the pump, I can still turn my wheels, it's just obviously a lot harder when on the ground and full weight on the front end.
@lisab3396

So why not just permanently remove the solenoid, undo the plunger/solenoid cover, remove the plunger and return spring and then re-install the cover. You have then technically bypassed the EVO. No hose modifications required!
@cooperc240
@cooperc240 3 года назад
That may also work, I didn't think about that. but it was so long ago I forget if that was doable.
