5.9 Cummins suddenly low on power? Check this! Laraine gives me boost fits on a camping trip!!

While hauling the camping rig out to Assateague Island in Maryland, I felt that Laraine was low on power. There was no check engine light, but my fuel economy was dropping fast and I had to downshift quite a bit. I continued down the road while watching gauges and discovered that she wasn't building 30PSI of boost anymore. It would get around 20PSI, maybe a touch more, and that was it. I thought there may be a boost leak, but no, it was something far more expensive! The Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator Solenoid. What?!?
Eventually Laraine did throw a check engine light with code P0243 "Open or Shorted Condition Detected in the Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid". Of course, it didn't throw that code until AFTER we had done the troubleshooting and knew where the problem was. Figures!
Laraine is my 2006 Ram 2500 Mega Cab Laramie with the 24V Cummins and a G56 6-speed manual transmission. This is pretty much the same setup in all the 24v Cummins in the 3rd gen Rams. I believe that's 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and the first half of 2007. They switched to the 6.7 in 2007. That being said, the 6.7 Cummins might have the same setup for the wastegate. Someone can correct me in the comments if I'm wrong.

Hello , I enjoyed your video but my 2000 5.9 does not have a electronic solonoid like yours does so i am thinking you have a 6.7 engine thank you .

Recently found out mine was bad by using my tuner to shut off the wastegate. Just getting on the freeway I was seeing 1300+ degrees. boost would kind of jump around and settle at 22-24 at 3/4 throttle. Initially thought I had bad injectors because of the truck starting hard but that Issue turned out to be a bad battery.

Mine is shifting weird and I just all of a sudden had no power and I thought It was the transmission and took it to a shop and the reason it won’t shift good is due to it not having enough boost and power to shift it so I order the part and hopefully it works and it doesn’t black smoke at all just very low on power

Was yours out constantly or was the boost going in and out. Mine ranges from about 10 psi to 20 right now. Never had this issue before so not sure where to start

So recently my truck ran into the same issue. Just seems low on power with no load. I’m starting to wondering if that’s also my issue

Delete that solenoid and put a resistor on the wire.

I put a plug on my turbo and a boost fooler on the harness. Not paying $900 for that.

Have an 06 Gen 3. Never had any gauges, getting ready to instal banks idash so I can monitor things.

How did you program your smarty touch to show boost. I bought one yesterday and the instructions are terrible. I looked at their online manual and it's not much better.

On the wires had fallen off of my solenoid. I just replaced it instead of soldering it.. easy, TY.

Hey man I just had this same issue, but mine had a code P0243 immediately. I have the bullydog GT Tuner and after changing the solenoid the code keeps coming back even after clearing. Thoughts?

How? Iv got a bunch of upgraded tuner straight piped intake and i get 25 lbs max. No books leak I have a tester

Excellent diagnosis. Why did you Have To Have It? When my Turbo on my 2005 2500 5.9 starting sticking open apparently from some internal issue while on a trip, I had to disable it and left it Closed since then over 150000 miles ago. I have done the research and don't see any serious issues and I have had none driving and towing. Isn't Boost the thing to watch? If you don't produce more boost than will harm the engine? Am I missing something here? Is there a really a problem with leaving it closed permanently if your boost never exceeds limits? I do get the noise at times of the boost having to go backwards through the blades. Does that cause any harm? Looking forward to your reply.
