It's honestly nuts how perfect that album is. And how incredibly ahead of it's time it sounds. There are several Talking Heads songs/albums that I honestly think would turn heads if released today as new modern music. Nothing about it sounds dated somehow. There's PLENTY of music I love that is great, but sounds SO of the time it came from. INXS album "Kick" is one that immediately comes to mind. It sounds hilariously late 80s. Almost like it was made today...in an attempt to distil that late 80s, scooped mids, gated reverb, antiseptically clean, quasi new-jack-swing sound. But still a great album. But then there are other albums....that are objectively timeless and sound like they're from every decade...or no decade. Remain in Light is one of those. I'd also say....Revolver(but _not_ Sgt Pepper). Also much of the music of The Police. And maybe Tool's Aenima and Lateralus. OH....and Animal Collective's brilliant Merriweather Post Pavilion. Albums that don't scream "This is when I was made!" and instead work simply due to the music being effortlessly excellent.

@MrThistlethwaite
@MrThistlethwaite 4 года назад
@@pablovargasfuentes817 Television were sharing the stage w/ all the punk pioneers at CBGBs, so chronologically they're not post-punk. The punk genre was not monolithic in its first wave, the NYC wave. Looking back, bands like Talking Heads and Blondie, who were also stars of the CB's scene are rightly sorted out as new wave. But a whole slew of bands, like Television, the Dictators, Suicide, Hot Lunch, 8 Eyed Spy, etc are harder to categorize. They were too hard-edged to be new wave, but not in the Ramones minimalist mindset either.

Power, Corruption and Lies has achieved such a legend status that I feel it often outshines another excellent New Order record: Brotherhood. While it is a much less groundbreaking and innovative album, it should by no means be ignored as I feel it iterated on Power, Corruption and Lies reaching and even surpassing it in many aspects.

Great New Wave Top 5! Parallel Lines is one of the LP’s that is classic from start to finish. You didn’t point out that ‘Fade Away Radiate’ featured Robert Fripp on Lead G. Also, your emphasis on TH Remain In Light is justified! An incredibly bold production! It’s ‘flip side’ being the monumental ‘My Life In The Bush of Ghosts’ which was also Produced by Byrne/Eno at the same time! Also, it seems New Order straddled Post Punk (Movement) and New Wave (Power, Corruption and Lies).

Skylarking aaaaa!!!! ^o^ The way you made the introduction to New Order was funny, like you were desperately trying to make them recognised in their own right, and bury any of the troubled existence of Joy Division. Usually most people would describe New Order as "Oh, it's just Joy Division after Ian Curtis died." It goes to show how dependent New Order is on the context of Joy Division, and how the shadow of Ian Curtis still looms dark and tall above them.

How bout a guide to Elvis Costello?
@chrisdelisle3954
@chrisdelisle3954 6 лет назад
Here's your guide: pick up This Year's Model, Armed Forces, Get Happy and Trust. Listen to them. A LOT. Marinade. Pick up King of America because you're interested in hearing what he can do with a more acoustic album. If you like those 5 albums - which are about as great as he gets - move on to Imperial Bedroom and Blood And Chocolate. While those two aren't as consistent (to my ears...I know there are many who think Imperial Bedroom is incredible), they do have some of his highest highs. If you're still onboard the Elvis Costello train, you might be wondering why I hadn't suggested My Aim Is True. I just never liked it. If you do like it - I'm sure at least a million people have - more power to you. The next tier of records I would suggest include Almost Blue (for some good country-rock), Spike (for a wide variety of music), Brutal Youth (for a more "Attractions"-like sound), All this Useless Beauty and maybe When I Was Cruel. If you like those, you don't need my help anymore. Just move on to whatever else he's recorded. There are some hit-and-miss records out there. Some people think (insert record I haven't mentioned here) is one of the greatest records they've ever heard. But those first five albums I mentioned are just about perfect and the only albums I'd recommend to everyone.

I know people make fun of the hair, but A Flock Of Seagull's debut is one of the best new wave records of all time.

I came to the comment section to talk about A Flock Of Seagulls, actually. I really enjoy their first three records, and I agree with you about their debut. Incredibly influential

@@curtisthedrummer6200 All 3 of their early records are just magnificent. Paul Reynolds' guitar work is undeniably influential on the whole of the 80s, The Edge definitely took some notes, but that's not to undermine Mike Score's vocals and songwriting, both are great!

Reminder to everyone that Stewart Copeland wrote the music for the first four Spyro games. I don't know how it happened, but I'm glad.

There is a little band very well known on my country called "Descontrolados" who were called new wave and post-punk by a magazine, i don't really call them post-punk but the music is really new wave-ish. Check out their EP "Piedad"

Curious what's the difference between New Wave and Indie?
@gliddofglood
@gliddofglood 3 года назад
@@mistymangham4410 Nobody said Indie in the early 80s,. And these bands weren't hidden gems - they were massively successful. Parallel Lines was stuffed full of chart-toppers. The Police has been mentioned. Blue Monday was (and is) the world's biggest 12" single. So they weren't really "Indie". The music genre at the time was "Indie" if you like. Devo were more obscure, and Talking Heads were more of a student band - intellectual (certainly lyrics-wise). None of the well-known Talking Heads hits were anything like their best songs, in my view. They were just the radio-friendly ones. Radios were not going to be playing "Born Under Punches" - more's the pity.

Good reviews. That said, I always had a problem in separating new wave from post-punk and to make my mind up about the pertinence of separating the two. To my mind remain in light and devo are post-punkers but, all in all, is good music that matters.

They are similar. Post punk is just dark and gothic new wave to me. Then new wave with a bunch of synths and drum machines becomes synth pop.

@@swigginstevesbargainbeerre1612 Here are your first 3 records to look into: Selling England By The Pound, A Trick Of The Tail and Duke. I don’t mention them because they are my 3 favorites, but because they represent the cream of 3 different eras. If you like Selling England, move back to Foxtrot and ahead to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. If you like A Trick of The Tail, check out Wind And Wuthering or The Lamb album. If you like Duke, move on to Abacab and And Then There Were Three. If you like the Peter Gabriel albums, you’ll have to check out Nursery Cryme. The rest is up to your curiosity. For the record, my 3 favorites are Foxtrot, Selling England and The Lamb.

Good list, but I'm never quite sure whether New Wave encompasses Post-Punk and Synthpop or if they are different genres altogether, sort of how Krautrock encompasses most of German music from the 70s, be it rock or electronica. Some of my favourite New Wave albums: Simple Minds - Empires and Dance (1980), The Passions - Thirty Thousand Feet Over China (1981), Echo and the Bunnymen (first four albums), OMD - Organisation (1980) and Dazzle Ships (1983), Tears for Fears - The Hurting (1983), first three U2 albums (although they're more alternative rock than New Wave), and Ultravox - Vienna (1980).
