Anecdotally, I've used both on and off since the 90's and think that Differin is comparable in effect to the lowest strength tretinoin. Weak evidence, I know, but thought that might be helpful to someone out there. I'd buy Differin or generic adapalene any day over a cosmetic retinol product for sun spots, fine lines and improving skin texture based on my experience with it.
Dr Dray, since it doesn't get absorbed much into the body system, do you think it is a safe product to try to remove light pigmentation on the chest near the cleavage of the boobs for mature women?
@@jessicamessica999Milia is usually on the eyelids and applying differin might be too much. Maybe a retinol/retinal formulated for the eye areas would be better?
I have been using differin for almost 4 years now and it's been the only thing that has helped tremendously with my cystic acne. I'll never stop using it!
wow. i was wondering if differin would help with cystic acne since it’s a more severe kind of acne… that’s really nice to hear. how long did it take to work for you? 😊
How is your skin when you go out in the sun. I love tanning at the beach and I’m scared of how bad it will react with the sun on my face for a couple hours.
As a mature woman with sensitive skin as I have lupus I have had no issues with using Differin. I love it. I have wasted more money on serums for age spots and this helps way more. Thank you
Speech-language therapist here - loving your voice these days, Dr. Dray! A lot less vocal fry, which can be damaging to our vocal cords in the long run. Cheers and thank you for the informative video.
there seems to be an 'epidemic' of vocal fry amongst American women on the internet, and some men too. And here in Australia young women are doing it too including tv presenters. It's so annoying. Interesting to know that it's damaging long term.
I watched an extended video about vocal fry and they said it isn't harmful (it definitely hurt to me and I sometimes do it without realizing ) by presenting the idea that some languages have that integrated so how could it be damaging. Idk, lol.
I am absolutely OBSESSED with Differin. I’ve been using it for decades. I can’t really tolerate tretinoin. I have rosacea, and tretinoin really tears my face up something terrible. However, Differin actually seems to calm my rosacea and gives me baby soft, smooth, even skin. Now into my 50’s…I have very few very fine lines. I attribute that to my decades of differin use. I used to get it from my derm with an rx. Now I just buy the OTC version. Love it!
Did you have bumps from your rosacea, or did the Differing help with overall redness? I’m interested in trying but not sure it would help since I don’t have the bumps like Dr Drey was talking about
Adapalene has transformed my skin. I’ve always had such clogged pores. I went to a dermatologist and the treatment didn’t help. I picked up the adapalene at target after struggling with acne since I was 12 and I’m 31 now. My pores are clearing out after about 3 months. Nothing has made my skin look this good
I’d love to see more research on the anti-aging effects of adapalene. I understand that it’s more selective in terms of the receptors it affects relative to tretinoin. A head-to-head comparison of anti-aging / photo aging treatment would be interesting to see.
as somebody who has been using differin for 4 years now, i tried switching to .025% tret and my skin reacted so badly. my skin loves differin and i think i will stick with it forever.
I was prescribed Differin when it first came out. It's very good and one of the better over the counter skincare bargains out there. It does help with my sunspots and skin texture too, similar to what Retin A does. I've used both.
I used tretinoin in the past and my skin looked amazing... I fell off the routine for a while and decided to start back on adapeline due to it being easier to get hold of... 8 months on adapeline and my acne is all but gone and my skin has the same clean glow I had when I was on tretinoin.
Great timing for this video for me! I just started using Differin. I’ve stayed away from it because I thought it would be too harsh or drying for me, compared to other retinoids. I guess my experience with other topical acne treatments has made me apprehensive. But I’ve been struggling more and more with acne, even though I was using retinal. I’ve only used Differin twice (introducing it slowly), but I haven’t had any adverse effects so far. This video has made me much more confident that I’ll be able to tolerate it and that it may be a great retinoid for me!
I just started using differin exactly 3 weeks ago as I was so afraid of purging and have acne on just my cheeks. I've suffered with hormonal acne for 10 years now and although it calmed down as I got older, I was still getting deep scarring that takes forever to heal. It is just my luck that after 2 weeks, I'm not really breaking out anymore. I know I can't really say I'm in the clear until the next 2ish months go by, but I'm super happy right now! I already see my hyperpigmentation fading each day along with consistent sunscreen use
Adapalene has been a fantastic treatment for my skin over the last year. I upgraded from retinol to adapalene last year and it's made my skin look amazing. So my teenage son and I are both using it for different reasons - and we are both getting great results. I don't see myself moving to Tretinoin.
Im moving to it since i struggle acne brekaouts on my back and from there sometimes on my skin. It is mild acne but now since im 27... i ve done dermpaen 4 weeks ago and still have bumpy or sometimes red pinplws under my skin. I use everyday saliyc qcid cleanser from la eoche and effeclar tonic. I also use vichy volcano scrub 2 times in weekon my t zones and nvichy 3 in 1 cleansee on my skin 2times in week. I m quitting rerinol from ordinary and only use multi peptide because i wanna see why o get still closed comedones/mild acne if i double cleanse 2 times (only if i have make upon). Seasonal change plays factor for me... im recievinf adapelen next week but will wait and see how my skin react
I just have to say how your Adapalene application video helped me to transform my skin. Your recommended routine was the only one that worked when starting this, i was really nervous bc of the potential skin purging but it didn’t last too long. Thank you so much Dr. Dray ❤
Yep, can I just say, thanks to Dr. Drays instructions, I started 0,05 Tretinoin last year, eventually graduating to nightly, and has yet to experience ANY irritation let alone a purge. And my skin has allways been unbelievably fuzzy. So grateful for this Channel and all Andreas sensible and free advice. Thank you!!
I've used Differin regularly for 5+ years. It has done wonders to my skin. Didn't get rid of acne completely but it is much more under control than before and spots are smaller and not huge bumps as I had before. The biggest improvement has been smoothness and brightness of the skin - it looks flawless now and so soft to touch. It took me long time to get used to it since I have sensitive skin but has been skin changing. Now I am trying isotretinoin topical - I'm finding it way gentler than Differin and was able to use it every day since beginning with no irritation. I've also got some tazarotene to try next.
I am 79 and was a sun worshipper for many years. I have been working on the spots on my face, but don’t tolerate tret on my neck/chest. I actually have some differin left from starting my retinoid journey. Now I will try using it on my neck and chest! Why did I not think of this before?! Thank you! You are great! 😊
I started using it right after it became over the counter. I used to use a ton of products and I was still getting hormonal acne in my mid 30s. 5ish years on differin and I use a mild DHC bar soap to cleanse and cerave moisturizer. Skin looks amazing. I'm 40 now and people think I'm still in my 20s. Saving so much money, time and heartbreak. Obsessed with the product and thank you Dr Dray for your video getting me through the beginning when I was dried out and peeling like a lizard. I eventually adapted and it was worth it.
Differin Cleanser and Gel made a HUGE change in my acne. It took a while to get to this point but is the first time since teenager that I don't feel insecure about pimples in my face. 😭
I have rosacea and i can tolerate adapalene once a week. I use the sandwich method. It has definitely helped my rosacea!! My face is less red and i almost dont get anymore pustules or papules. During the rest of the week i rotate between soolantra, finacea and rosex. In the am i use spf as a moisturizer 😊
This Rosacea condition is so weird and unpredictable. I really started heavy on adapalene gel, almost every day with no bad reaction from my Rosacea. It has improved my pustule and papules a lot, too. On the other side I can't tolerate any serums, most moisturizers and only one single sunscreen. My derm would never prescribe me adapalene, I had to actively ask for it. Finacea is drying for me, soolantra too moisturizing and we have also tried a antibiotic cream and that made my face so itchy. I am so happy I found Dr dray to introduce me to adapalene.
Differin is great! I have been using it for over a year now, and my skin looks amazing! I admit it was very drying at the very beginning, especially around my lips (use vaseline to protect), but it didn't last longer than a month. Absolutely worth it! Thank you, Dr Dray :)
I started using Differin in August to help fight random breakouts and hyperpigmentation, and I'm starting to see great results. My skin tone is more even, and if I see any pimples pop up, they're gone by the next day. I get dryness around the mouth if I get too close with the gel, but I always sleep with an occlusive on and around my lips and use a good moisturizer all over my face after the get has set.
I had to deal with hormonal acne and started my treatment with epiduo, I feel it not only dried out acne but also made my skin so smooth (?). I love it! I still use epiduo from time to time.
Thanks for the info Dr Dray. I’m going to look into differin gel. My rosacea is so much better now that I have a solid skincare routine. Retinoids have been a main component. My skin looks so much better than it did 10 years ago. Pretty amazing, really.
Can you share what you use or what your routine has been to use retinoids with rosacea? I just get flushing and overall redness and have been wanting to incorporate, just a little hesitant. Thanks!
@@ttogytsirhc I use cerave retinol serum at night. I hope that you find something that works for you! Rosacea is such a pain ☹️ Another thing that works for me is green or rhassoul clay. I make a mask, but I don’t let the mask dry on my face. I put it on in the shower, so it doesn’t dry.
Excellent, in-depth and crystal clear information. Much appreciate your efforts to educate us on skin care products, and skin conditions. Thank you, Dr. Dray!
I have rosacea and I started using adapalene because of this post. I have have no irritation so far whatsoever. It is too soon for seeing results but I feel very comfortable. If you knew how many things irritate my skin you would be shocked.
I hadn't seen one of Dr. Dray's videos in a while and wow!! You look good! Not that you didn't before, but there is a big difference. You hair and skin are amazing, you look so healthy! I hope you feel like that too!❤
I've been putting a little tretinoin on the backs of my hands. It really lightened up the age spots and evened out the tone. It did take a while to turn the situation around, but it did bring results.
I didn't experience any issues with Differen when I began using the product. Unfortunately, I experienced perioral dermatitis 3 weeks after starting adapalene. I was also layering products. I really went down the anti aging and acne treatment rabbit hole. There are so many products to try and I wanted amazing results fast. The itching, stinging red bumps around my mouth and chin were so painful. It had also begun to spread outward on my cheeks. Thank goodness I found a treatment to clear it up quickly. Going forward I'll be removing products from my skincare regimen and reintroducing adapalene.
I’ve been using for 2 months 2x a week. My skin has been great. Now I just need to deal with hyperpigmentation which has also been reduced significantly
I have been using it for at least five years and my skin looks great! I get compliments all the time that I don’t look my age(I am 54). I lived in FL for 10 hrs and had a lot of “freckles” on my face and they are gone now and I know it’s from daily sunscreen but also adapelene. Thanks Dr Dray for all you do! I save money and keep it simple😊
I just started using it and omg I can see the benefits already. I have aging skin and had really bad acne in my teens and 20s so I have a lot of scarring and big pores. I also have a lot of stubborn blackheads. But I notice my skin tone is more even and my face looks more smooth. I know enlarged pores are practically impossible to get rid of but I feel like this has blurred them a bit so they’re not so noticeable.
Both adapalene and tretinoin are topical retinoids that are effective for treating acne and signs of aging. However, there are some key differences between the two medications. Adapalene Adapalene is a third-generation retinoid that is available over-the-counter (OTC) in the United States. It is less irritating than tretinoin and is a good option for people with sensitive skin. Adapalene is effective for treating mild to moderate acne, but it is not as effective as tretinoin for severe acne. Adapalene has also been shown to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it is not as potent as tretinoin for anti-aging. Tretinoin Tretinoin is a first-generation retinoid that is available by prescription. It is the most potent retinoid available and is the gold standard for treating acne and signs of aging. Tretinoin is effective for treating all types of acne, including mild, moderate, and severe acne. It is also effective for improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and hyperpigmentation. However, tretinoin can be irritating to the skin, especially when first starting out. Overall, tretinoin is the more effective medication for acne and anti-aging. However, adapalene is a good option for people with sensitive skin or those who are new to retinoids. Because of your channel, I started using Differin about 2 years ago at age 60. I have had acne problems my whole adult life. It took time for my skin to get used to it and I would have breakouts sometimes worse than before Differin and in areas that previously were not a problem. I almost gave up a couple times but reviews would say stick it out that it could take up to 14 weeks for my skin to adjust. And 14 weeks it did. But I'm so happy with the results to this day, I will never quit using it. Not only am I acne free, but my skin looks better than it ever has. And you sure can't complain about the price.
I started using adapalene about four years or more ago after a video you made at that time. I think it is helpful. Earlier this month speaking with a group of lady friends one wished me happy birthday, I said thanks but 63 isn't a special milestone and I wasn't celebrating. Several gasped, saying they thought I was mid fifties. I have to admit I did lapse a bit in my care except cleansing and sunscreen this year, some hyperpigmentation from sun damage decades ago on my very fair skin had returned. I have promised my self to do better and returned to adapalene, trentinoin is not in my budget.
Please do a video on mature skin products that exclude hyaluronic acid. So many anti aging products have it in them and for those of us who can't tolerate it , have a hard time finding products. 👍 Please and Thank you
I have seborrheic dermatitis that looks like roscea. - hot cloth cream wash - differin gel At night: Hot cloth wash cream Anti dandruff shampoo *BAR* makes a big difference then the shampoos irriate my skin - Retin a cream with moisturiser My skin is amazing now. You have to keep doing it, there is no cure for this condition or acne. However... we are not alone. Celebrities do too if they stop their skin goes back to issues, they have prescription skincare, laser treatments etc.
I tried to use tretinoin for a year and I kept thinking I'd eventually get used to it, but I never did. My skin looked even more aged and dehydrated, and my hyperpigmentation got worse. Adapalene has been like night and day, my skin tolerates it MUCH better and is almost clear except for a single random pimple here and there. Also my skin tone has really evened out. I watched your anti-aging video and I'm optimistic but I wish there were more evidence.
Hey! I’ve been using tret for 8 months now and not a huge improvement. I didn’t have terrible skin before starting but not perfect. My skin is still insanely dry and I’m still breaking out all these months later. I was prescribed Differin. When you switched from tret to differin, did you notice an initial purge again? Thanks!
@@lindsayeldridge2256 I didn't personally, but everyone is different. I'm also using OTC differen which isn't as strong as prescription Adapalene so that may make a difference.
It's funny, I was using Differin Gel and had a lot of irritation, even though I wasn't even using it everyday and putting on a moisturizer beforehand (and sometimes afterwards). I changed to Tret because I was more interested in anti-aging and was afraid Differin wouldn't be enough but I was incredibly nervous about the potential of even more irritation. I've had ZERO issues with Tretinoin cream .025%. Plus, I find the cream much easier to apply than a gel.
I have been using Differin since June this year and am now starting to see some good results. I use it every other day with a recovery day in between where I use a lot of moisturiser. I have for his works best for me.
I love differin I used it for acne but seem to have developed just white heads and bumps on my nose and redness. Rocscea meds did not work so tried this (old tube from doctor when I had acne) and this helps a lot. Thank you this explains why so I will ask the doctor to prescribe me more.
hi dr. dray! i would really love to hear your take on acne: hard water vs distilled/soft water. thanks for all your helpful content ❤ edit: also skin and water ph levels in general!
Happy Thursday! My son uses differin and it does helped a lot with his acne. He occasionally breaks out. I use Tretinoin 0.1 % once a week, i get a lot of dryness and peeling so I can’t use it as much.
Have you considered trying a lower strength tretinoin? I believe the lowest strength is 0.025. You might be able to work up to using a lower strength more than once a week, then graduate to the next higher strength?
once a week is not enough for efficacy and retinization. You need to be on a lower percentage so that you can use it daily and get the results as per the research.
If you don't want to "officially" go to a lower dose version, my derm told me yesterday that I can just mix the tretinoin with moisturizer to effectively lower the concentration. I've been using .025% and want to go up to .05% for my forehead and between my eyebrows, but was afraid it would be too much for my nose, cheeks, and chin. She said to mix it 50/50 with mild moisturizer and it will dilute the concentration down to .025% and use that for the more sensitive areas.
I use the Differin cream not the gel but I find it much slower in clearing my clogged pores idk if my routine is the issue or the cream thank you for the video 😊
I have rosacea & eczema & I tolerate Differin gel pretty well. I found that using it allowed me to use less of my Rx rosacea cream & really helped combat milia & white heads that I can get from using makeup/skincare that contains silicones. I try not to use too many actives on my skin since it causes irritation & keep my skincare routine very gentle & basic. Differin can be drying so I'd advise a good moisturizer & experimenting with applying the Differin *after" moisturizer if your skin is very dry/sensitive.
I’ve had acne for over 10 years , and have used all different kinds of products for acne. I just started using adapalene about 4 weeks ago and wow I have noticed a huge difference in my acne. I’m not getting those large red pimples and it’s definitely preventing acne. I did not experience a purge phase so far as well. I will update when I get to 3 months.
Thank you for the great video as usual. It is good to know that it can help remove sun spots on hands. I have a doosey on the back of my right hand and was thinking about laser treatment- very expensive. I have been thinking about trying it and for sure I will now. I will watch your video on the use of it for anti-aging vs tretinoin. I also noticed that Adapalene has a specific tube for scars.
I love adapelene, that and benzoyl peroxide have kept my acne in check for 2 years. Even when I go a month without using it. I had acne my whole life until I started adapelene.
Wish I had used adapalene when I was in high school, my acne was at its worst point then and it definitely would’ve helped. At least I have it now, so no more breakouts during my period!
I’ve always used Tretinoin with no issue, but I switched to Differin/Adapalene due to cost concerns. Unfortunately I’ve found out that I’m allergic to it! My face gets dermatitis and I get lots of facial swelling.
I love differin, I’ve been using it for 4 years and it helps with my acne so much , it was rough the first couple months when I first started using it but after that my skin was getting better and better. Now I have no acne and my face is clear like glass skin .
I started using Differin in April. It's taken a while but I have not had any breakouts the last few months and my skin texture seems smoother. I have not experienced any irritation or dryness at all but I do use a moisturizer after applying. And my dark marks from previous breakouts are fading. I've been pleased so far and will continue to use it. Thanks, as always, Dr Dray. Happy Thursday! I hope you have a lovely evening. 💙
No, this is my first time trying one. That's why I introduced it very slowly. Because my skin is so sensitive, I was worried I'd have a negative reaction. Which has happened many times in the past if I start a new product. I've learned over the years that for me, slow is the way to go.
I love it, am here for this ❤🥰 It’s significantly been helping my closed comedonal acne, wounded looking recovery of said condition on the skin & PIH. It’s definitely a process but I’ve been going everyday with it :) Am hoping to get a more eye specified retinol too, or eye cream. I also apply it onto my natural born-with sebaceous filaments on the cheeks, I don’t expect anything by it but I use it anyway. :) Thank you for mentioning this Dr. Dray!
@triciaponder8987 yes. That's how I get them off, but the roots stay and can grow back. Also, if your reason to freeze is cosmetic, insurance won't pay. I'd like to find a topical to reduce them between dr visits.
I trued benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, topical spironolactone & clindamycin, you name it and nothing made much of a difference. The FIRST time I used Adapalene my acne cleared about 50% overnight. It’s insane.
@@vickrdable I don’t believe so. I did make the mistake of using it with other actives so it dried my face out and heightened my sensitivity to sun. The tube specifically says not to do that. I stopped using all actives and moisturized for a few days to heal my skin and I now use the Adapalene is a spot treatment when necessary.
I’ve been using differin for a few years, it helped so much with my acne and texture. Now however, I’ve been struggling with extreme dryness. So I’ve cut back on using differin, because I’ve heard that you shouldn’t use very occlusive moisturizers with it at night, which right now is the only thing helping me with the dryness. How often should I use differin to get the benefits? How can I use it while still keeping my skin moisturized?
PLEASE DO A UPDATED VIDEO ON TAZAROTENE/Arazlo !!!!!!! Please, please, please! It’s pros, cons, and what it helps! I love it on my dark skin. I wish more people knew/heard about it. 😊😊😊
An ingredient that still continues to helps after so many years 😊❤ and I'm tempted to try it for my millia (i think as a retinoid will help but it will take time 😅 right ?). Plus it is roughly seven euros here i think 😅 so pretty inexpensive right ?😅. I found this video really informative 😊❤ Doctor Andrea.
