5 Ambitious Attempts to Reinvent the Train (That Failed) 🚂 History in the Dark 🚂

Sometimes in development, people try to push the envelope. New ideas always take time and effort and blood, sweat, and tears. But more often than not, new ideas no matter how amazing they may seem simply do not turn out the way that people want them to. Here's five times in history where that exact thing happened.
"A sail bogey or sail trolley is a wind-driven vehicle that runs along railway tracks."
"The Aérotrain was an experimental Tracked Air Cushion Vehicle (TACV), or hovertrain, developed in France from 1965 to 1977 under the engineering leadership of Jean Bertin (1917-1975) - and intended to bring the French rail network to the cutting edge of land-based public transportation."
"The gyro monorail, gyroscopic monorail, gyro-stabilized monorail, or gyrocar are terms for a single rail land vehicle that uses the gyroscopic action of a spinning wheel to overcome the inherent instability of balancing on top of a single rail."
"The Bennie Railplane was a form of rail transport invented by George Bennie (1891-1957), which moved along an overhead rail by way of propellers."
"The Beach Pneumatic Transit was the first attempt to build an underground public transit system in New York City. It was developed by Alfred Ely Beach in 1869 as a demonstration subway line running on pneumatic power. The subway line had one stop in the basement of the Rogers Peet Building and a one-car shuttle going back and forth. It was not a regular mode of transportation, and lasted from 1870 until 1873."

With any new take on rail transport my first thought is usually "What about points (US: switches) and crossings? How practical would a complicated junction be?" Most schemes are only well thought out going back and forth on a single line but a real railway does much more than this.

How very rude Sir British Rail once again gifted the World a working example of the pitfalls of such designs So other companies and countries wouldn't make the same costly mistakes And they used the British taxpayer to fund their generosity and not affect their own profits So anyone in the UK who paid tax during the British Rail era should also feel warm and fuzzy inside Not all heroes wear capes.

@@roanneabe7552 As a concept it predated the Aerotrain both in the use of an air cushion and in the use of a linear motor for propulsion, the French were willing to throw more money at it, whilst the UK did not and to its credit BR were not that interested in pushing it forward much to the frustrationof its advocates, so most of the funding came from Universities, so the French actually built passenger carrying ones whilst Britain only progressed with models, before killing the idea in 1972.

So, the Bennie Railplane wasn’t a dead end! His engineer, Hugh Fraser, kept working on it, rearranged the wheels, got rid of the props, and made it electric. The SAFEGE monorail was the result. The Chiba and Shonan monorails in Japan, and the Düsseldorf and Dortmund monorails are direct descendants. The latter technology has now been bought by a Chinese company who are still developing it.

There was also a full size pneumatic railway in use in 1847. The Brunel designed South Devon railway. But rather than the complication of a tube for the whole carriage there was just a smaller vacuum tube for a propulsion device beneath the carriages.: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-irl0ICgmIBc.html Worked well when it was working until it rapidly wore out in about a year with rats eating the leather seals.

1. Im pretty sure the aerotrains biggest flaw was, similar to turbine trains, that they were inefficient at slow speeds since maintaining the air cushion consumed a lot of energy 2. Technically the railplane could've been tested on the Wuppertal, Germany suspension Railway since it used the exact same rails with, in the worst case, having slightly different diameters

The idea of creating separate passenger train infrastructure, like Betin and Bennie wanted to do, wasn't without merit. It reduces the conflict between passenger and freight services over priority. And elevated railways using traditional track have seen success in the past for that very reason. The Beach Pneumatic railway may be familiar to some people. Anyone who's seen Treasure of Manhattan Island.

You’re a bit unfair to the Brennan Monorail. If power was lost, the momentum in the gyroscopes would last plenty long enough for everyone to debark safely, and even then, once the gyro stopped, the car would just settle onto the skid on the side, which was how they parked overnight. The Bennie Railplane looks suspiciously similar to the Wuppertal Monorail.

10:40 operating over existing rail lines to save space. Until you get to a tunnel, overbridge or anything else you see above a rail line. Later you see the station loading platform with the propellor at much the same or worse closeness to people as the dangerous German railcar. Even the cost of steel in the carrying framework has to be around a thousand times greater than the cost of two steel rails even before you pay for the workforce to assemble it along the route. Pity these aspects were not pointed out before the money was wasted building it.
