Being from Britain, I already know a thing or two about rain, given as we are to moaning at the first sight of drizzle. But often overlooked is the fact that parts of the United States are even more wet. Here are 5 American States With Way More Rain than Britain.

I live in Arizona. When I was a Freshman, I went to Seattle to visit my mother for 6 weeks. It was the greatest 6 weeks. In was foggy every morning, cool and crisp even in freakin' June! And the best part was the rain. Big fat raindrops, not the sprinkles that you get in Arizona. Real rain. Everything was green even though no one owned a sprinkler. I saw things I only heard about, Like slugs, snails, I saw Mushrooms in yards rather than in the grocery store. And moss that really did grow on the North side of the trees. Flying back into Phoneix in the middle of July was like stepping up to an open oven door.

@UserHorologium
@UserHorologium 5 лет назад
Central and Southwest Florida are among of the contenders for Lightning Capital of the World. When one considers that there are several cities in the state (Sarasota/Bradenton. Fort Myers/Cape Coral, Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte, and Naples|Immokalee) with more than 90 days a year of lightning storms) and quite few more with more than 80, Florida is one of the stormiest places on earth. Of course, when one considers that every day, it *will* rain for 15 minutes sometime between 3:00 and 5:00 every day in the summer, it makes sense, but to people who have never been to Florida, it is incomprehensible. Of course, Lawrence's criteria are a bit off, because the rainiest place in the continental United States is in the same state as some of the driest places. Putting Tatoosh Island (77 inches of rain/year) with Spokane (17 inches) is crazy, but states like Washington and Oregon have wildly divergent climates due to the terrain. Like Hawaii, the rainfall is strongly influenced by mountains. Unlike Hawaii, there isn't a continuous coastline to supply moist air everywhere. The western coasts of those states are very drizzly (with a maritime climate much like Britain) and the eastern halves of those states much more arid (the winds from the Pacific loose much of their moisture passing over three or four mountain ranges along the way). Even Seattle. renowned for its overcast skies, only receives about 40 inches of rain each year, because of the mountains on the Olympic peninsula sucking up much of the moisture of the prevailing winds.

Holy hell, someone mentioned Mississippi getting wrecked by Katrina. I was in Mobile when that hit, and went over to Biloxi to help out. Biloxi just basically wasn't there. Then the levees broke, and everyone forgot about Mississippi whose gulf coast was flattened.
@howtubeable
@howtubeable 5 лет назад
It was very political. The news media focused on New Orleans (overwhelmingly Democrat) and ignored the Mississippi Gulf Coast (overwhelmingly Republican). Plus it was an opportunity to create fake news against George W. Bush (Republican) as allegedly being cruel and racist against the black population of New Orleans. It was all political spin. The news media has lost all credibility.

The sun appearing after a brief summer storm *sucks*! At least it does in the hot and humid parts of the country. You're like, "Oh, nice! The rain will help to cool things down a bit." Then it stops and the evil sun starts to evaporate the water, making it even more humid! By the way, the reason why people say, "It's not the heat, it's the humidity", is because sometimes it actually gets so humid that sweat won't evaporate.

Thumbs up for "Without further canoe." It is in fact raining right now in metro Atlanta, where I live. Here's a good Southern rain term for you: gullywasher. You might notice throughout the South that many roads have 2-4' deep ditches (or gullies) alongside them. There are times when it rains so hard, these ditches can fill up in minutes, a phenomenon you can watch, since it's raining so heavily that you can barely see the front of your car, so you've wisely pulled over to the side of the road.

Florida should be called the humidity state not “sunshine state”. My state most certainly did not make the list in fact - a early 70s pop song is the best song to talk about the amount of precipitation in my state. The name of that song is: “It never rains in Southern California” BTW - “Free Fallon’ “ is not about rain - epically since it has so many references to areas around Los Angeles.

It's the rain shadow from the Cascades. The coast/western side of the cascades could probably make the list. The eastern side drops the state's average massively. Though on the plus side claiming 300 days of sun is actually not far off the mark for eastern Washington/Oregon. Oddly enough boat ownership is high in some areas on the east side due to river and lakes fed from the mountain ranges we're sandwiched between.

Seattle has an average number of 152 rainy days a year, btw. I would guess it's overcast for 200+ days a year. That puts it pretty high on the 'gloom' list. In fact, the sky is grey so often in Seattle, it is thought to have a severe negative impact on emotional health, leading to high amounts of substance abuse and the creation of grunge. Seriously, the creation of grunge has honestly been blamed on Seattle's grey skies.

I've been living in Miami, Florida for a little over a year. It does rain a lot, however even rainy days usually end up sunny at some point. The habitually overcast day is a rarity here. I am from Connecticut and it seems that it is overcast and dreary for about 6 months straight there. The other 6 months are beautiful but I'll take Miami weather. You don't need to check the weather in Miami. Every day is much the same. It will be hot, it will be sunny and it may rain for a bit. Just pack an umbrella and suntan lotion and you're good.

I live in the Central Valley of California (vicinity of Fresno), and it’s pretty dry here (11” of rain annually). 6 years ago we received just under 4 inches! If you don’t like rain, this is the place for you! Laurence, I have lived in all five of these states, Hawaii and Florida while serving in the US Navy. I was born in Louisiana and now reside in Mississippi. Most of the rest of my family moved to Alabama and never left. When I first moved to Hawaii, I was in a motel at the north end of Pearl Harbor. I was looking out the window at the beautiful blue sky to the south, but saw rain falling on the cars outside. I had to cross the street and look north to find clouds over the mountains a few miles north to find the source of the rain. The wind carried from there to the southern shores of the island. In Hawaii one can see double, triple, and on very rare occasions, quadruple rainbows. It is a very beautiful place to visit. Loving you show.

Most summer days in the peninsula will see afternoon showers. Florida experiences convectional weather then. A clear sky in morning grows cloudy as water evaporates, rises, and forms clouds, which drop the water back essentially where it came from. Jacksonville, where I live, doesn't really experience this as much. We are far enough north to be more affected by fronts.
