People don't realize the years of training and discipline it takes to be as good as these guys, especially the snake and mantis. This is one of the best documentaries I have ever watched on Martial Arts :)
Snake isn't a stand alone system and not that involved. It's one of Hung Gar's animals. Those are the real "5 Animals": Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake and Dragon. But the most focus is placed on Tiger and Crane...the other three are mostly variations of Tiger and Crane techniques. Wing Chun uses Snake as well but Wing Chun is modified Hung Gar Snake and Crane. Basically, Snake really isn't used much in Kung Fu. Few finger strikes and few overlapping deflections into strikes. Similar to Crane and Mantis. As opposed to Mantis. Which has full systems in both Northern and Southern Kung Fu. Southern systems are very different from the Northern ones. Northern Mantis having the most branches in Kung Fu though. Close to a dozen different Northern Mantis systems still in existence. Many Northern Longfist systems even integrating some Mantis sets and techniques into their curriculum.
@homemade hamster seller well fortunately there's more to martial arts than what one person considers to be practical. if you want combat, go watch ufc. bitching about someone else's hard work unprovoked is the epitome of arrogance.
The lightning fast strike of the snake The balance of the crane The accuracy of a praying mantis Agility of monkey The fearless aggression of the tiger
Long ago, the 5 nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the snake Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all 5 styles , could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished.
I guess ur right. But if the ice wasnt weakend and that was a real blow, i dont think you would worry about balance but rather raw power. The guys dead if that ice was real/untampered
@@aperson1782 no ice blocks like that dont need to be tamperd with to break them with little effort or training, ice is hard but fragile and with the ends raised like that the force splits them like nothing all you gota do is strike with intent and you will break right thru, there are plenty of videos showing why displays of brick, board and icebreaking are little more than physics at work and not so much a display of martial skill
@@enryuxzero Oh wow thanks. I just read up on this ice breaking, and whilst it is hard, even a small fracture or crack may mean the total collapse of the block!
5 Animals are: Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake, and Dragon. While there are dozens of "styles" and several full systems based on Animals: those are "The Five Animals" of Shaolin Kung Fu. Derived from Hung Gar system. (Wing Chun is modified Snake and Crane from Hung Gar) Most common full systems are Northern Praying Mantis, Southern White Crane, Northern Eagle Claw, Southern Praying Mantis, Southern Black Tiger and Northern Great/White Ape. Bagua and Xing Yi also use many animal techniques. Xing Yi using the 12 Animals.
@Angellic Freedom I do Northern 7 Star Praying Mantis. And a Nanjing Central Kuoshu Northern Longfist system, Heibei branch Xingyiquan which has 12 animals (Dragon, Tiger, Bear, Monkey, Water Lizard, Chicken, Swallow, Sparrowhawk, Snake, Eagle, Mythical Tai Bird), Wing Chun (modified Snake and Crane from Hung Gar) and some Hung Gar. Heihuquan, Black Tiger, is a Shangdong Provide system. Where Northern Praying Mantis comes from. Black Tiger is modified Tiger from Hung Gar and Choi Li Fut with some high kicks thrown in. Monkey is it's own Southern system but also done in Hung Gar and some other systems. There's also Northern Tong Bei. Northern systems are fairly different from the Southern systems. Tong Bei is the Great White Ape. Northern Praying Mantis uses it's footwork. And Swan? Do you mean Mandarin Duck? Northern foot-poking system with angle changing deceptive kicks. We do some of it in our Longfist. Either way, when someone says the 5 Animals... it's: Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake and Dragon. I don't care what the Last Airbender or Kung Fu Panda or fakes like Jack Mace says. Ask any real Traditional Chinese Martial Artist and they will tell you the same thing. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_styles_in_Chinese_martial_arts
@@samschmit7181 Just 熊 Xióng (bear) in Xingyiquan and Baguazhang (internal systems). Xingyi's animals come from Bagua. Bear is pretty isolated and there's not much to it. It's a rising block/clear then dropping palm strike. In some Xingyi branches they combine Bear and Eagle. It becomes a bump where you're using an angle to create an opening and striking with an elbow. Second vid. Bear mostly trains use of body weight. Animals for the most part are over glorified in movies. There's a ton of them, but they're not systems and you're not imitating the animal. You wouldn't even know I was using Mantis or Crane techniques. Typically they're a set of techniques within a system. The exceptions being: the Northern and Southern Praying Mantis systems and Eagle Claw systems; Southern Tiger and Black Tiger; Southern Fujian White Crane; and I guess Tong Bei which is Northern Great Ape. Those are stand alone animal systems but they're still, like all Chinese Martial Arts, derived from multiple other fighting systems. Which is how Hung Gar started out. Just as Tiger boxing. Then it added Crane. Then they added Leopard, Snake and Dragon. Those are "The 5 Animals" Wing Chun is just modified Crane and Snake from Hung Gar in a high pitched horse or neutral stance. Good for basic self defense though. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9ZuH-Lcrfdk.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fpu9uFcSjUA.html
Remember all started at main temple so five animals are practiced in both north and south. North has more older authentic Kung Fu South mostly in Hong Kong but I have practice long time it's not very practical. There are many more including dog and chicken
James Anagnos So in a fist fight you shouldnt block your face? Thats a type of form, and is taught in boxing etc 😂 a boxer would beat some rando on the street 9/10 times.
I feel like Kung Fu is the last martial art to practice after you learn the basics and master other martial arts. Kung Fu looks like it follows the flow of movement and body.
I love how so many people don't understand that all of these eastern martial arts styles were developed for and used in wartime. These techniques are considerably tame compared to their earlier forms, back when eastern martial arts were taught to soldiers, every one of the styles you saw in this video was an effective tool for killing, and that is exactly what they were used for. The only reason most of these styles don't have the same effectiveness nowadays is because of a fair few reasons, but the two most common ones are Bad teachers who are teaching the techniques but not instructing the proper use for them in a combat situation, and 2, very strict regulations on what can be taught in martial arts because of how effective and dangerous it can be when learned properly.
both your reasons are wrong, the reason is that they are nothing more then commercial bullshit and lost the essence of combat science a very long time ago, the killing instincts are long gone from any so called martial art today
@@jamesanagnos6123 The man can't escape his killing instinct, he can just calm it down. So, if someone has the power and the knowledge, with that instinct, he can be deadly
@@chrisven899 they cant even defend them selves they dont know how to fight the little sparing they do is non realistic and cant be applied in real time combat
No way. Capoeira is only a dance with some acrobatic elements. Kung Fu is much more than that. It contains nerve striking, joint locking and throws. What you saw here were forms (by the way, perfectly done).
I've watched a profesional do a Gorilla style martial arts, and just like every other style, it really does look like the animal it's based off of!. There's just something about the movements that mesmerize the brain!. {Also I couldn't resist this but...} {Baki Fans: Triceratops Fist.}
@@AcediaIX Cat knows how to climb up nn down straight trees without branches, How to jump down a height n balance body weight to not fall, how to trick ur prey into a game to keep it unalert n then attack (guerilla tactics), how to find most accurate n shady places to hide in emergency, how to give birth calmly, attentively focused even during pain with discipline and be in control of n self help in stuck birth by licking n pressuring on vulvar walls, etc.
I couldn’t take the tiger guy seriously cuz he was doing all this cool stuff with all these “yeahhhhh” sound effects and then he takes a long pause then says “........ferociousness”
There is actually Shaolin style called Five Animals which combines the Tiger, Dragon, Leopard, Crane and the Snake. Other kung fu styles that combine certain animals, they include Wing Chun which combines the snake and the crane within its own distinct concepts and Hun Gar which combines tiger and the crane. The traditional Praying Mantis style from Northern China which is depicted here uses footwork from the Monkey style.
People know to comment on the bad vibes of the video but they donn,t see the good part of videos i love it to know all about this i am very thankful for this video upload
That fist is vicious. Try punching through a collapsed cardboard parcel with a regular punch and nothing ever happens. With some training the leopard fist will go through! Now, imagine what this would mean on human flesh!
@thokala ramaswamy if I recall right sometimes Leopard style Kung Fu is also included in the 5 Style Kung Fu. Not to be changing the subject but Russell Wong's martial arts teacher was Tak Wah Eng a master of Fu Jow Pai aka Tiger Claw style Kung Fu
Criticisms of the clip are very valid. Most of what is being shown is what known as contemporary Bejing Wushu. Performance forms. ((Though you tell some of them do also train actual Chinese Martial Arts.)) Contemporary Wushu is not actual Traditional Kung Fu. Very athletic and fun to watch... but not real Kung Fu. This has been an major issue in the community the last few decades. Because there's a very significant difference between traditional systems (real fighting and self-defense) vs Contemporary Wushu (performance acrobatics) A video like this will always bring criticism and debate.
@@bobsciascia I'm not a kung fu practitioner so I don't know whether they're practicing performance forms or otherwise, but I do recognise the importance of katas for combat and katas for demonstration and performance. The former focusing more on the combat application and the latter on the perfection of the form. But what I don't understand, is that there is a surprisingly large amount of "experts" in martial arts on the internet who like to "critique" other martial arts as well as it's practitioners.
I like what they're covering, and I appreciate the work it takes to make this, but the way they present/introduce the styles are just a bit too ridiculous
For those MMA and self-defense junkies, remember that many of the ancient arts were developed in another time for different scenarios. Your modern techniques may not work on a Chinese Battlefield 1000 years ago...
@@MeanMustard650 Definitely an odd line of reasoning. Like you said, wrestling has a ancient roots, but boxing, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and other core components of modern MMA have long histories also. I'm pretty sure a good choke, punch, clinch knee or armbar would work in those time as well as now, and I'd trust my life to any of those above an obscure monkey or crane strike.
