I know I'm literally like 5years 2 late for this video, but I'm trying to make a plan to start my very 1st planted tank, as of right now I've got a 20gallon tank with a male Betta and 6 Neon Tetras and I really really want to get live plants for them instead of the fake 1s what kinda substrate is best?

CAN YOU MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT SUBSTRATE? I am building a tank with live plants and i used regular gravel but im thinking about changing out the substrate but there are so many and some raise ph and some dont and i need help!!!
Thanks for sharing this! I'm just planning to get my first tank (112l/30 gal) and I'm trying to decide how to make it work on 'low-tech' conditions. What puzzles me the most is this: is gravel alone sufficient enough for the plants you mentioned in the video? And second, how should one choose the amount of seedlings to plant in a starter tank? They are going to spread, aren't they? I know fish keepers use a formula for the max amount of seedling per tank, but what would you advice to the novice?
Hey, I heard plants like anubus would rather root on wood and large stones, does that STILL MEAN THEY CAN IN GRAVEL? just NOT AS WELL? I accidentally turned on caps and am too lazy to fix it, don't judge.
Thanks man. Your Video has steered me in the right direction. I recently planted some plants from Petco and Petsmart. Neither are doing well. Probably by design. Keeps folks coming back for more replacements. I am heading to an actual aquarium store in Wake Forest tomorrow to see if they have your list in stock. Thought it might be good to support local, true aquarium supply stores are getting few and far between. I will keep watching, keep up the good work.

I've got a wendtii that's been growing 6 month's its now triple the size and the center piece plant. I've got val growing in backleft to center. Starting to add bacopa moneywort in right back to center. I'm going to add dwarf amazon sword mid ground just for fun and random variety thats more natural to the fish
Mike the tank is five years old it is 90 g with three large amazons over 18" and many other plants i always have problem with brown algae even when i had my reef tank it Most be someting in my water i had it checked out with the lab all the test came back good ,Maybe is me i had to cut back on my feeding, marineland planted LED lights are on for eight hours I use the same dosing as you CO2 is max out with the Drop checker, three filters FX6 and two Emperor 400 in the back over 120 small tetras in the tank all the plants grow fast but the older leafs on the Amazons have brown algae on them. Roger. I think it must be your flow then. When algae builds up like that if all your other parameters are in check it may be a dead spot. Try putting a circulation pump and point it in the area to increase water movement.

The tank looks great,and I agree those are among the best plants for non Co2 tanks. The new "carpet" plants really only grow gassed...so us old timers go back to micro swords. You might want to remove the Rainbows..they seem to be making the Angels a little stressed.
Helpful video. Specially for beginners. I understand people asking you to do more planted tank videos, after all most most of your videos are related to plants, but its also cool to see you try other things like that salted water setup. Either way your videos are always helpful.

A true down to earth beginner video. Too many say beginner but don't show the plants with their names. Instead they spit out some scientific names for everything and try to show off their intellect. Which makes their video totally useless and a waste of time for the beginner. Thank YOU.
Your tank is awesome. I planted Bacopa and from two plants it's in three tanks now but in one of the tanks lots of brown. I have Root Tabs the good ones also twice a week Flourish, Trace and Potassium. What I'm I doing wrong and the other tanks seem to be fine. Going to get me some Jungle Val the Italian Kind lol Good talking to you Mass awesome stuff as usual.
I've been looking for Bocopa (spelling!) & Dwarf Lily for about 8 weeks now and to no avail! But we're in the grips of the world epidemic... And now in lock down so I don't expect anything else lol. A really interesting video thank you... Take care my friend 👍😷👍

I grew up with fish tanks had over 20 at one time. haven't been into the hobby for over 20 year's now ,and miss it! have you used under gravel filters ? my plants did really well when I used them.
MASS Aquariums My hero! I have the same question as Kathy from a year ago. What do you do for a substrate? Do you use the same for all plants or do different plants require different soil and water pH as they do in above-water gardening? I would love to see a video that addresses aquarium substrates and pH. Also, is there a source that gives the best planting for specific species of fish? For example, if I want to have discus is there a substrate and plants that I should have to keep them alive and healthy? It has been years since I had a tank and suddenly I have two 36 gallon aquariums. I enjoy underwater gardening as much as I do having fish. Now there are many, many more plants and creatures to be had. What fun is anticipated! Yours was the first video I have watched. Years ago, like way before you were born, you were lucky if you could find anything other than goldfish and guppies for sale and a bunch of anacharis!
Haha. Thanks. This was dirt capped with gravel. Yes you can pick specific species and accommodate certain fish or biotopes. I like to plant what I can grow. Lol
MASS Aquariums Can't blame you for that. I do the same thing above ground. What I grow will also be dictated by cost. My eyes are bigger than my wallet! I have been shopping at the website you suggested and so far I want three of everything. Now I need to look up "biotope!"
You could start with 8 and see how it goes. They will fight and pair up if you get male and female. While they are called angels they are pretty aggressive at times but should be fine
