Thank you for this video. The only thing that might be confusing is the difference between, Motif, Phrase and Melody. For me the Motif was the first 3 notes you had, which you then varied. This made up a Phrase, which following a similar principle with the motif is varied in subsequent Phrases. These Phrases combined make up the melody line. Let me know if I have this wrong, as I have seen Motif, Phrase and Melody used almost interchangeably.
Hi Mark, thanks so much for watching. Yes I would say the first 3 notes are the motif. Then the first 4 bars would be the phrase, resulting in the total 16 bars being the overall Melody. Apologies if that wasn't so clear!
Your channel is absolutely amazing, this is exactly the kind of helpful, useful stuff I need as a beginner. Your presentation style is really engaging, and the content has given me many moments where the lightbulb goes on and I get it - that's exciting and gets me motivated to go try out what I've learned. Can't wait to g through the rest of your videos, and I'm looking forward to more. Thanks so much - subscribed!
The first bar reminded me of the music from Children of Dune. I suppose the short motif is very common. Of course it then went in a different direction. Great stuff, cannot wait to get back home to try this out. 😃
Bonjour . Je cherche depuis longtemps un tutoriel tel que celui là .( j'en ai abandonné beaucoup ) Celui ci ( l'ensemble des différentes vidéos ) me convient parfaitement , pertinemment et clairement fait sur le contenu et sur la forme . MERCI !!! ( et bravo )
Thank you for the good video. Can you tell me in which vst is the string sound coming from here. The string sound is very warm and nice. And teacher's melody is so pretty!!
what gets me is that it seems like its usually the harmony, or the chord progression that really makes the melody.... I have tried taking popular melodies and putting new or different chord progressions under them, just to hear how it works or more likely, doesn't work....dont quite have the skill to do this however...
Good video. But hard disagree on you opinion of large musical steps, yes use them wisely, but pieces like: æa room with an ocean view" and "Fallen down" absolutely THRIVE on those long intervals.
Hi Domenico, well it is a melody which I wrote and own the rights for, but of course I have uploaded it to youtube for public consumption and learning from :-)
The final result sounded excellent. I couldn't help notice that you didn't use any rests. I like add "silence" to create an impact. Looking forward to your next video. Thanks!
...sounds good, but isn't one of the first rules of writing a good melody, is that it should have one single climatic note? If the climatic note is repeated, it's not the climatic note.
Hi, thanks so much for watching! Yes absolutely, I will add a video for writing and orchestrating for 4 hours onto my to do list - thanks for the suggestion!
Hi Simon Very clear explanation as always. Just wonder if writing any melody without considering key and underlying harmony plus cadences is good practice. I struggle to find these in your piece. Maybe Aminor key but why F#? Patrick
I came here from the total beginner how to write music video and I see in your melody that in this video you very often use notes that can not be combined in some sort of simple chord. So whatever your harmony chord is, a few notes are not on the chord. At the moment I feel like entering very unsave territory when leaving the chord notes when it comes to melody. Is there any advice or thing to know when jumping off the recent chord for one or two nodes might be usefull?
Your channel was recommended to me today and I've found it very useful so far so thank you. For this video the only thing that surprised me a bit which I thought might have been useful to talk about is your choice of cadence. Your 16 bar melody ends on a tension note which suggests the melody wants to continue on somewhere, I would perhaps have said a quick word on that or changed it to a resolution to the root just for the sake on completeness. Other than that, very straightforward and easy to follow
Sir you r gr8 pls teach me how to do a orchestra step by step . N how to develope it n how to add harmonies to it .. pls sir ....how to. Compose the cello n viola etc etc ...pls sir from fundamental level.
Hi, check out the rest of my channel. There are videos on there on how to introduce strings, percussion and & woodwinds etc. This should help you along on your composing journey!
Great Video as always. I'm kinda new to composing. Would it be possible to make a video about song structures and the music theory behind it? Can I use 4 chords in the whole song like in pop songs? How do I keep it interesting?
No my problem is not that i cannot write good melody, my problem is that i don't know the exact time measure and rythm whish i were in those people's shoes who can write down the correct rythm but cannot write good melodies🤣
