I organize by surname and category. Each document is assigned a code, such as CUL-BIR-034, for Culver-Birth Record-034, where the number is assigned sequentially as new documents are added. Paper documents go into binders - one per surname, with tabbed category dividers. Digital files go into folders and sub-folders. I include an indexed list in each category section or subfolder of all documents together with reference info included. An index entry might look like: BEA-REL-001 Mary Beaumont Baptism Source Citation: West Yorkshire Archive Service; Wakefield, Yorkshire, England … And then footnotes on, say, a group sheet might simply be “BEA-REL-001”.

I like how organized you are. However, it's been my experience that codes often make sense to the original organizer but not the person who inherits the system. Do you have a reference key with your organizational system so the person who inherits your files understands your methodology?

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics A point I’ve considered. But I think the coding system is pretty transparent. If I have a document coded BRO-DEA-123, it should be readily apparent that BRO is Brown, DEA is DEATH, and that 123 is just sequentially assigned.

Better to use Clooz and easier to find by names, type of record. Accessment when foun as well as well asn notes.

Question: Do you actually use more than one filing system? I am inclined to use Couples Files but wonder if I should also have Record Type Files. I believe you said that you have both. As an example, if a family member shows up as a child in the 1920 Census, do you have a copy of that census in 1) the parent's Couples File, 2) the child's own Couples File after he/she gets married, and 3) the Record Type File for Censuses?

I don't use a complete two tiered system. Meaning, I split my family trees to the Browns and Geiszlers (my parental and maternal lines). Then I divide by record type. Generally speaking it works better when passing things down to relatives who will inherit certain lines. By staying away from couple files, I reduce the need to duplicate the copies (as you mentioned). But then again, I don't save copies of Census records to my computer or paper files. Census records are readily available online. Having the census records linked to various online trees makes it so I don't have to save copies. I keep files for original records that are difficult to obtain. Or, that require subscriptions to access (like newspaper clippings). Great questions. I hope this helps.

Family unit makes most sense to me. Color-coding is to unwieldy for me. Color is good for memorizing which side of the family a couple is on, but there's only so many colors that are easily distinguishable.

what do i do if i cant read what it says on documents? like its a little blurry and nice af handwriting which i dont know how to read it

Share it in some Facebook groups. Some folks are able to figure it out. Or try to see the original document in the future. That one might be hard to do.

You mentioned Brown's and Ohio. I have an ancestor maiden name is Brown, and they're from Ohio. Any connection to LZNR-R1H?

I have no known relationship to Howard Brown at this time. You never know. My Browns come from somewhere in Maryland and that's where my line runs into a Brickwall.

About 80% of the info I have is Birth, Marriage and Death records. I have very little census, and just a couple of inmigration records and newspapers. About 80% is digital and just a few are on paper. The places were my family lived are not that well documented online as US. So I have just this few things to do my research. Even so, it is a lot, really a lot of info!! (not enough to solve some brick walls, I know).

My system to organize all the records on my computer (I download everything: I do not trust being able to find it again if I need it, so I want to make sure I have my personal copy of the file, and I have it on hand when I need it again): Well, I use a mix of marriage folders and "color coding" (I use letters to the branches instead of colors, but the idea is the same: 1 letter to the branch of the family and 1 number to the generation! 2A is my father's grandfather, 2B is the other father grandfather, 2C is my mother's grandfather and 2D is the other grandfather. After the number I include the surnames of both -in spanish and italian names both members keep the surnames-) This is better for me because I can align second marriage of the same person next to the first marriage of the same person when I put the same numer at the beginning of the file name (specially if the person is a woman, this is really important). And I keep all my grandparents alltogether, all my great-grandparents together and so on. It has some limitations, but it is handy for the moment. But I keep looking for better ways to organize the info.

Every piece of genealogy information is valuable. Treasure it and keep it preserved. I intentionally keep my physical collection small because I've lost so much during moves.

Not a fan of the color coding system, because it’s keyed on a specific individual as the root. If someone else takes over my work (or if I want to incorporate someone else’s color-coded system) everything would have to be recoded.

Genealogy can be overwhelming when researching historical data let alone frustrating. You cannot go by what your ancestor’s say because they lie or their ancestors lied. So many lies prevent you from uncovering the truth. So disappointing.

Just because an ancestor lied doesn't mean all records are inaccurate.

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics they are when you are purposely given the incorrect spelling of your birth last name. It does when a parent creates false documents and NO GOVERNMENT AGENCY verifies the validity. My birth certificate was incorrect.
