Great topic and since you have some experience I'm all eye's and ears . I'm currently building and 75% done. looking forward to the time when we can hit the road and start our own adventure . But many times I have looked for someone to post a video on this very subject. I'm sure for each individual there is a concept of the perfect campsite and what it includes, the necessities and the comforts that make it enjoyable. I have thought of an event canopy that covers the entire unit and/ or the side tent/canopy combo that offers some privacy . Than you for your video

Congratulations on your near completion of your teardrop build. You are going to love getting out on the road! After reading your comment I had to chuckle because I now realize I left out the best canopy for 75% of all teardrop enthusiasts, the "event canopy." Due to pulling our 4X8 teardrop camper with a 4 cylinder car I have leaned towards lighter canopies. But, in recent months, our family has moved more towards slightly heavier instant pop-up canopies and privacy shelters, such as the event canopy.

We are currently in the process of cutting a hole/side door in our Lightspeed privacy shelter. As you mentioned we are really interested in the idea of having a side tent for some standing room. We are planning on pairing the side tent with a canopy to get more overall rain and privacy coverage around the camper. We picked up the idea from fellow youtubers and from a few forums.

I have a 12x12 EZ up. Hate it. Heavy. Hard to setup alone. Takes up a ton of room packed. Everything seems to be built bigger and heavier than the 10x10 - seems twice as heavy and twice as big when packed. I don’t use it unless I set it up for the summer. Basically, I don’t use it. The experience has pushed me toward the Clam for quick setup and takedown like my shower tent. At the moment, I use a tarp extended from the truck - might make some PVC pieces to eliminate sag and aid drainage.

Love this video! I built my teardrop 5 years ago and still haven't bought any kind of canopy/tent/awning. I've camped in pouring rain more times than I can count and finally decided its time. Thank you for the info.

Congrats on the build Steven. That is a really great accomplishments. And to still be going strong 5 years later is another accomplishment in itself. If you have the cash we are now big fans fans of the Clam pop-up tents. The obvious is that they are instant set-up, but what we are most impressed with is the build quality. We have also heard they hold up really well to wind. We haven't really had the chance to use it in wind because most of our boon docking sites are pretty protected areas.

And another wonderful video. I always enjoyed my time visiting Girdwood. My father was a United Methodist minister who pastored a little Ecumenical Girdwood church from 1968 to 1970. Although the little church has been replaced by a larger United Methodist "Girdwood Chapel". My wife and I visited 7 years ago, from Seattle.

Great videos. We built our own teardrop back in 2012-13. We named it the CrowsWing and it's still camping strong. We are glampers at heart with awnings off the sides at the doors and a First Up Gazebo for a dining area. There's so many ways to camp, from minimalist to maximalist find what works for you and have fun with it!

I really like that canopy of yours. I think it really adds to the ambience of the campsite. We always used a 10X10 pop-up canopy with our Scamp 13’, and it really helped create extra dry, or shady space. It also creates a transition from the great outdoors into your living, cooking, lounging, sleeping space. The fair looked like a lot of fun!

We never even thought about the possibility of using it for a car. They are very versatile though. We end up using it just as much over the picnic table, as we do near the teardrop.

Totally agree. I have a small travel trailer, 21 ft total and 3500#, which I use on our hunting property. However, when it rains, you can't seat more than two at the dinette. So I want a canopy/screen room so we can gather outside out of the rain and wind.

Thank you for this! I’m a cancer survivor and I just got a teardrop for my 50th birthday to celebrate! I chose a T@b clamshell because I’m not really good at rough camping and I have two little dogs with me. It has plenty of room (and a tiny wet bath) inside while still retaining the more classic look and outside galley of a traditional teardrop. It has a keder rail and I will probably get a visor that fits in there that goes over the front door but I still want an awning of some kind to put over the galley, a picnic table or out front if it’s too windy or rainy for the visor. I don’t need an actual “room” for privacy, but the ability to add sidewalls or mosquito netting might come in handy. I noticed that most of the tents and shelters you recommended are dome shaped and I’m curious about the advantages of that over the other pop up canopies I’ve seen. As an aside - I drive a Suburban so I’ve got plenty of room to haul and store things, but I have to be able to set it up and take it down by myself, sometimes very quickly when the weather changes. Thanks!
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 5 лет назад
Congrats on your new teardrop! Sounds like you definitely deserve it :) The T@b owners we know are nothing but happy about their little clamshells. The wet bath part sounds really nice to have. The advantage of the dome shape canopies is that they pack a lot smaller and are a lot lighter. The downside is they take longer to set up in comparison to the square pop up models. Our suggestion would be if space is limited go dome, if space and weight are not an issue go pop up. Also just from experience I think the dome canopies tend to last longer because they are from camping brands that actually have a lot of time and money going into research and design. The pop up tents are usually designed more for casual use. As for setting up yourself the domes take longer, but require little to know muscle. Many of the pop ups also require 2 people to set up. Also in wind or changing weather the popups can be hard to move around.

Playing with Sticks Thank you so much for the insight. So far I’ve ordered most of my accessories online, but maybe it would be best if I went to a store and at least got a feel for how big and heavy the canopies are. I wonder if they would let me try putting one up by myself? Probably not a big box store, but maybe a place like Bass Pro Shop or Camping World would help me out? I’ve wondered about the King Camp SUV awnings, too. I thought the Teardrop Shop had something similar but I just looked and they only have full room tents that cover the galley and, like everything there, they are pretty pricey.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 5 лет назад
Glad we were able to help. Bass Pro and Cabelas lets us set up all the tents and awnings in their shop. It is fun to give it a try before getting out there. And when setting them up imagine it being a windy day. We were surprised how quickly these canopies turn into parasails on a gusty day. The teardrop shop is pretty pricey. But, if I had the money I would definitely get one of the full room tents. We think it is worth it just for keeping the bugs out if you live in a buggy area. And the large, open, meshed screen room tents feel like you are outside in comparison to the smaller tents with less mesh. Our next goal is to modify the Ozark trailer 2 room shower tent. Not the best tent, but it is very affordable. We will definitely get a video out this summer and let you all know how it went.

My teardrop is only 4x6 so i am able to attach a suv tent to the whole side of my camper (like you would attach the tent to the back end of an suv). It pretty well seals tightly around the trailer and had attached floor. Can be opened up like a screen room or flaps down for rain protection/privacy. Mine is a Napier Sportz SUV tent. Works great.

It is definitely a season for patience for new teardrop owners! Welcome to the club Stefan. You are going to absolutely love it. It is going to be so tough resisting buying a bunch of accessories for your trailer between now and August. But our suggestion would be to buy as little as possible. This way you get to take it out and see what you really need. We carry a lot of gear. Some we need, some we like, some just because we want to learn about it to be more knowledgeable answering people's questions. For teardrops we still believe less is more. For example we are huge fans of the Clam Tents at the moment for our side entry tent. But, you may find on your first trip that you actually would like a built in tent or awning coming off your vehicle's roofrack or your teardrops. Little things like that.

We have a vintage fibreglass trailer. We love it, but there is nowhere to sit comfortably inside it for any length of time if the weather is bad. We shopped around for a bigger camper, but then we found a Eureka Northern Breeze shelter. Sturdy, screens and flaps on all four sides, sets up easily. It greatly multiplies our living space and either a screen room or cozy shelter.. It was expensive but way, way cheaper than a bigger trailer!!! It makes a huge difference.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 5 лет назад
Wish we new about this shelter before we purchased the much cheaper, less durable version. We do like that ours is only 6X6 to take up a little bit less space but other than that everything about the Eureka seems better than what we chose. But, we will put it through its courses this summer and make a video showing if it held up or now. Oh yeah, we got the Hasika All-Weather Diversified 8 x 8 Instant Screened Canopy

Your wife and kids are adorable. I'm watching this channel to try to figure out how a family can camp in a teardrop camper. Do you all sleep together in the teardrop? Also, you don't appear to be full-timers. I used to camp frequently in the state parks in Indiana and a couple of times in the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. As much as I loved it I was always happy to return home, get out of the elements and sleep in my own bed.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 5 лет назад
Thanks for the sweet comment. All three of us sleep in there. But, we have another boy on the way so that puts us in a place where we will have to either add a bunk or upgrade. We would suggest a 5 foot wide teardrop. Ours is 4 foot wide and works well, but with one more foot of width we would have a little more space for movement. There are also people out there who add a bunk to the teardrop, this eliminates the cabinet space but makes a really fun sleeping situation. Check out the Summit teardrop with bunks. A little pricey, but it gives you the idea of what can be done. You are correct that we are not full timers. We typically go out for about a week at a time. Once you get over a week in a teardrop you are ready for a pit stop at home for your bed and a shower. It can be done, but you need to be a little more strategic using a side entry tent and a popup shower.

I would have to see how and what to bring if we going on a week excursion or longer distance trip, that's a scary part being we are over the hill folks. thanks for your ideas and sharing your experience we can use later, bob

We have two large long-coated German Shepherds that we don't want inside the trailer yet they want to be near us when we go to bed. So a side-tent that mounts against the tear-drop trailer is not a luxury; it is a must-have item.

I cover the entire teardrop with a large Big Agnes Deep Creek shelter. I set the shelter peak high enough for the back hatch to be open, and attach side tables on either side of my galley. My entire cooking area is then out of the rain, and I have a little living area. I can also keep my teardrop side windows open all night without any rain blowing in. If it isn’t raining and I’m around a lot of mosquitos, I set up the shelter on its own with the bug house.

Drew, I love your family videos, great information from a beautiful family, in one of the most awesome States in our country. Great information on using teardrops to get out in the outdoors. Great info on auxiliary things to go along with us on camping. I would just add one thing to your reviews on using many of these things and that is where they come from. You do occasionally identify when a product comes from,China of course, most camping gear comes from China. Stop for a moment to think about that. Many consumer goods from China are probably produced by low paid workers, or even forced labor. Please when you review camping products, include an analysis of where they are sourced. I do believe many of us don't want our pursuits in the outdoors to be built on the exploitation of other of our brothers and sisters throughout the world. I know this is extremely preachy, but we've got to get real about the effects of our lifestyle choices.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 3 года назад
Hi Jake. Thanks for sharing. You probably have noticed every time a product comes directly from china (manufactured and company owned) we announce it. We do this just so folks are aware. And boy do we get hit in the comments for it 😂 And you are absolutely right about "most camping gear comes from China." But, I am not sure if you understand the extent of how much you are right. I mean you nailed it! One night I was able to get cell coverage when sitting in the teardrop at like 2 or 3 am. I went down a rabbit hole of tracking back supply chains from within the US outdoor and sporting goods industry. Everything, I mean almost everything was able to be tracked back to a couple provinces in China. And really the majority of items were coming out of the same wharehouse. Meaning no matter how great the US story is about the product (it was designed during an expedition in the arctic to reduce the impacts of climate change, It came from our garage from months of testing...) In reality the product was most likely already created in China and being sold in China at a lower price. Now the US company picks it up, slaps it's own label on it and jacks the prices up to match the US market. So yes, we could mention everything on the channel comes from China in one way or another ,even if it is just a bolt or a zipper. But, what we find is it creates a string of negative and often racist comments that do not belong on this channel. Slim Potatohead had one of his comment sections get so ugly recently that he had to pull the entire video down. And it was just because he mentioned the diesel heater was from China. Were the comments about the heater, no. They snowballed out of control into every awful subject you could imagine. This stuff gets tough. Even brands that are known to support healthy manufacturing processes and sustainable sourcing of materials are not coming out of America. Take Patagonia for example. If you own a Patagonia outfit you know it is top dollar. And this is still not coming from here. Check the label. Even this is enough to send people on an angry rant on here, even if we were to track back the outfit and show it was procured in an ethical way. As for your preaching, we appreciate it. I wish we could bring more attention to something like this. But it is hard with a one way dialogue. And not a thorough dialogue either. Imagine you get 30 seconds to share this information in your video. To really cover your side of the argument it would take minutes or really hours. That is the difficult thing about speaking on RU-vid. You get to say your part and then everyone else gets to tear it apart. But, without hearing the other side of the dialogue that typically comes after the rebuttal. I think this is why a lot of creators end up burning out. Last thing if we are getting preachy. I will leave this little thought for you. Yes, there are some awful practices in China. But, we all know there are some good manufacturing going on there as well. I can't imagine big brands like Under Armor, Coleman, Keen, etc. taking the risk to manufacture items in China utilizing poor working condition. Imagine if one day the world decided to boycott all things created in America because of the horrible struggles our country is going through right now. That would be awful. I think there is a better way of drawing attention to the issues of overseas manufacturing without generalizing an entire nation. How? I wish I knew. How do you truthfully find out what outdoor manufacturers are ethical and which ones are not? If you know please let us know and we would be glad to share.

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 3 года назад
Hey again Ryan. We purposely don't share a whole lot on bears because it is kind of situational based on where you live. Basically here in Alaska the bears have so much room to roam that they don't tend to be as habitual as those in areas like Glacier National Park. Because of this Alaskans are a bit more laxed on how they approach their camping style. On the flip side because we have so many bears we do not cook or store food in the galley during the summer. So our galley really is just a storage area, not a kitchen. When in the lower 48 we do the typical bear containers and bear bags hanging from tree branches. Because you typically are not far from your tow vehicle the guidance up here is to keep all the food in your car. When boondocking the best thing you can do to minimize encounters is keep your distance from water sources and bear food sources. Sorry I couldn't give you any fun non-traditional methods. Again, we have never had the need to get creative around this because it isn't too much of an issue here.

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 3 года назад
Off-road tires based on your road conditions may be needed for your tow vehicle. But, not to offend people on here... off-road tires on a teardrop trailer are mainly for looks. If you think about it there’s no drive shaft turning the wheels of your teardrop. Basically the teardrop is just rolling along. There may be a slight argument for off-road tires when truly doing off-road to prevent movement from side to side. But really if you’re using the trailer on just gravel roads and pavement off-road tires are not necessary.

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 5 лет назад
We have had the same experiences even with the lighter 10X10. It is great, but it can be hard setting up one person and it loves to get tossed by the wind. We are hoping that one day somebody will make a Clam or Gazelle tent that has two doors. That way it can work as a side entry tent for the teardrop. We just purchased a new tent about a week ago. You should be able to check it out not the next video, but the video we will be posting on the 24th. The tent has two doors and some neat canopy features. It is made in China though, so we will see how it does over time.

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 5 лет назад
Hi Mark. We just had someone comment earlier about the Clams and the Gazelle's. We love them both. Like you said they were originally built for ice fishing, which makes them tough. But, now they have converted their design into a screen house. The only reason we decided not to go with one is that they only have one door. With the icehouse style ones you could cut out a second door to match the door on your teardrop, but we weren't confident we could cut the screen mesh without it continuing to rip. The perfect tent would be a pop up tent like the clam, with enough height to stand up in and that has two doors. Unfortunately nobody has invented it yet. But, our latest tent meets all our demands, minus the instant pop up part. It is the 8x8 Hasika screen canopy. 2 doors, waterproof/resistant material on top, 4 attached sidewalls for privacy if needed, and the best part is the side walls can convert into extended canopies on each side. We will be making a review video about it this summer. Here is the super long link www.amazon.com/Hasika-All-Weather-Diversified-Instant-Screened/dp/B013QPIVY2/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_3?keywords=hasika+8x8+screened+canopy&qid=1551763598&s=gateway&sr=8-3-fkmrnull

I'm looking for a canopy and most of the reviews of the 10x10 are not that great. They collapse in rain, blow down in wind, pretty much not good for having up for a week in different weather conditions. This mountainsmith looks decent and I've seen them before. Another option is a tarp with poles or one pole and the other side attached to the vehicle or teardrop. I have one, but it takes longer to set up. It may take more weather abuse, however. The agnes might be exactly what I need for a quick setup.

Congrats on the teardop! What did you end up getting? As for the canopies. We still use all of these, but mostly when group camping. When I solo camp my favorite by far are instant pop-up canopies. Not only is it easy up and down for one person. It also means easy up and down when you get home to dry it if moisture was on it while you were breaking camp. My favorite two are the Lightspeed Instant up canopy amzn.to/3lKDA4o This thing is never in stock, but for some reason it is today. If you want it grab it quick. Here is a great video on how to modify it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dvbsJDDaYKg.html and then the other more costly tent, but truly amazing is the clam tent. Most solo travelers pick up the "Traveler" because it is only 4 sided amzn.to/2Hhtfy8. You might want to go with the Venture, which we own, it is only about $30 more, but fits great over a picnic table and works well when you have friends along. Also as a solo person I find they both setup just as easy. Here is that one amzn.to/2IR2Ass. If you want to see our venture setup with our chairs it can be seen in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3KLNdiRc_7w.html to see the Lightspeed setup in 30 seconds see this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eDD5dclY_oU.html It is our shower video, which is one of our favorites if you haven't seen it yet.
