JazzyJetsets, Lets get this one clear, when South Africans say " White people own 85% of the wealth " we are not referring to the ordinary white man, we are simply talking about the ones owning the mines and strategic means of production and there are handful of them. Poverty in SA has no color anymore, 25% of white people leave in extreme poverty. Also, about 67% of millionaires in South Africa are black, 70% of South Africa's middleclass is Black. Why is it that you have more poor people who are black? you may ask, 2 things, (1) They are more than 80% of the population and that is more than 50 million people and half of that number live in poverty. (2) Historical injustice which is being address but the change is slow due to resistance from white South Africans and corruption from ANC leaders.
Spot on, but, even if the South African black population were 3× more well off, they'll still cry racism and be the oppressed victim, this seems to be the route the mentally challenged people go.

Very informative and unfortunately accurate video regarding the negatives… The cost-of-living positive only lasts as long as you are earning dollars though… Just bear that in mind. Your rands won’t go nearly as far. $900 a month for rent is probably around R14k which would be out of range for anyone earning less than around R40k a month, which would (on a guess) be about 97% of the country… A lot of people in SA getting by on R3.5k, R4k a month…. Many people earning around R6k, R7k. Depends on your qualifications, experience, if you work for yourself though of course.
Don’t forget to check how much you will get pay doing what you are doing now, cause it ain’t the same. To be super sure of a very great life, go for IT, live in SA with a US salary as an IT pro (bummer)

This video is an experience of a First World person. Do your research well. Speak to South Africans across the spectrum because the education levels, life experiences and views vary greatly. A year or so of living there fully immersed in the dynamics of the society should provide far better insight.

I’m South African living in the US and I’ve drawn so many parallels about life in the two countries, it’s different but the same especially for black people.
Lived in the UK for about 8 months, US 10 months and visited other countries in Europe. My intentions were to migrate HOWEVER! When I stayed in those countries I'd miss the mother land, something special about South Africa. You are correct, December is a vibe (actually from September to December), phone snatching is a thing only in upper class neighbourhoods (lower class neighbourhoods you get straight up jacked but isn't it the case with most neighbourhoods around the world), and scheduled power cuts are frustrating but the cost for living is among the best in the world, I spend roughly R3500 ($240) on monthly groceries and buying property is cheaper than in the west, for 2.5mil ($150k) you can own something decent in a good neighbourhood. I mean there are pros and cons to every country but with SA the pros far outweigh the cons.

She’s 100% right about pretty much everything. I lived there for 6 months and all good and bad things are pretty much accurate but the good out weighs the bad imo. I plan to move there. I was really safe and felt more safe there than in the US. Gender base violence is real but not super common. At least not that I’ve witnessed.
Well gender based violence is a major issue in South Africa. South Africa has the 3rd highest proportion of sexual violence in the world. So it is very unsafe for women, however, it all depends on your location. Most of these sexual crimes occur mainly in the very poor communities of South Africa, predominantly in the majority black communities. I don't know all the reasons for this, but one reason I know for sure is that the lawlessness of these communities is largely contributed to under-policing, and lack of crime solving and crime stopping resources.

Zimbabwean Man Killed 7 South African Women In Limpopo. A 34-year- old male who is an alleged serial killer has appeared in the Seshego Magistrate court today. The suspect was arrested for killings, kidnapping and robbery of seven women. These women were killed after they were lured with promises of employment in Polokwane. The alleged serial killer appeared in Seshego Magistrate's Court on Monday, this month. Where he faces charges of kidnapping, murder, rape, robbery, and defeating the ends of justice. These women were killed in different occasions, and their bodies were found dumped in different locations in and around Polokwane. The killed women were aged between 25 and 48. These women were killed between August and October this year in 2021 Outside the Magistrate court, there are some of the protesting residents who say the court must deny him bail. The 34 year old male has abandoned his bail application. It has also been reported that he is in the country illegally, and that he is originally from Zimbabwe.

I feel like the Xenophobia card has been overplayed when it comes to South Africa. I used to get offended and was oversensetive when we were referred to as Xenophobic but not any more. Here is the deal we do not think educated or professional "foreigners" come to South Africa to steal our jobs. The conflict with "foreigners" in South Africa is at the lower end of the economic activities which one might call unskilled labour force. The complaints is on the low end of the job spectrum and to an extent I sympathize with my fellow citizens on that spectrum of the job market as they feel like they are being squeezed out of opportunities in the only sphere where they can realistically participate in any form of the job market. They are in no way expecting to be managers, doctors, engineers, etc and they have never said those jobs are being taken away from them. In other countries that part of the job market is reserved for the locals just like in South Africa but because of corruption economic migrants from other parts of the world also delve into the lower end of the job market and adding to the already highly saturated job market.

Xenophobia, Black Tax and the Land issue in South Africa are really complex topics. We saw clips during Lockdown how some of our farmers were picking up illegal immigrants for seasonal work at borders. Maybe because the people who normally wait for piece jobs on corners were prevented by soldiers to to roam the streets. For many South African who have loved ones in foreign prisons for drugs ( at least 800 on record), blame Nigians for that. As you mentioned most of these conflicts are among the unskilled labour forces from both side of the borders, it's just at eye level and none of the parties want to be wrong. Ofcause curruption plays a big role too, because I don't undersatnd why so many Zimbabweans can get jobs like bank tellers, when South African Youth, With Bachelor degrees are unemployed. I was a victim of gunpoint and mussing 3 times and 2 incidents were Zimbabwean and the other Congolese, but for me crime has no race or nationality, but for people in the townships fighting for scraps it's a total different game. So I think for anyone to make a video on Xenophobia, thourough reseach and understanding of the systems in SA is very important.
My advice, 3 years living in SA not driving is not a good idea. Myself and my family we visit US every year for just a month and as soon as i land at the airport, i have my hired vehicle, i just drive. For one day if feels strange but the next day i will fine.

I understand what it's like to constantly hear about people from other countries acting horrendously (In the US, we hear similar news about Mexicans living in the US). Great video, on the xenophobia issue I think or feel it's a matter of getting both sides of the story. The main issue for most South Africans is not foreigners as a whole but ilegal and undocumented foreigners in all racial lines. As a South African I know the importance of human migration across the world however every guest in a country must be obedient to their hosts laws. Undocumented foreigners are creating a breakdown in the country's service delivery process eg hospital capacity etc. I won't even touch the crime element of it😲

What people from the States don't understand for them it's cheap because a Dollar has so much value than living in South Africa and working here. Example i get R6000 a month so rent is R15000 which for you it's $900 me? I can't pay that. Groceries I have to spend R3000. Jazzy Jetsets, South Africans are not Xenophobic, we simply have a problem with Nigerians and Zimbabweans. We have no issues with Namibians, Swazi nationals, Lesotho, Botswana, etc..
It's interesting hearing this perspective from an African American. We complain about the high cost of living, high fuel prices, etc but when put into global perspective I guess our cost of living is not as high as we think.
When you've got time, please search for a currency converter and convert your salary to US dollars, then maybe you will understand why African Americans view SA cost of living affordable, and why we complain.
It’s definitely not, I’m South African and relocated to the UK and I’m now looking to come back to SA because of the cost of living crisis (amongst other things) , it is absolutely ridiculous. I pay £1000 (R20 000) in rent for a 1 bedroom flat when I used to pay R8000 at home in a very nice suburb. That is just one example, there’s so many other cracks. At the end of the day every country has its good and bad, it’s just a matter of being where your spirit feels at peace regardless of economic/political/societal reasons
This load shedding is relatively new here in SA, we are also not quite used to it. We hope it will get resolved in the next 3-5 years. Just on the topic of xenophobia, you have rightfully pointed out that black South Africans are operating in the 20% space of the economy, this space is too small and I think it's one of the reasons people might feel intolerant to job competition. Secondly and most importantly, white South Africans are increasingly preferring foreigners for job opportunities- since they regard them as both affordable labour/manpower and dependable (won't join unions, etc.). There are also unskilled immigrants comming to South Afric - adding to the crime situation and/or informal ways of living (shacks, beggers at the traffic lights, trading in drugs, illegal immigration, etc.). All of this contribute to the negative perception of foreigners. Small shop owners from outside of SA have also been accused of not being good citizens, selling expired foodstuffs, reacting violently (shooting) to common crime affecting their shops - in the townships. That's what I think underlines this whole xenophobia issue. I personally don't support this, but I thought let me share what I know about this phenomenon.
I used to work for the SA power supply company, ESKOM, which as you know is the only supplier of bulk electricity in South Africa. So I deliberately used the word "relatively new" meaning whilst it's not brand new, it's a young phenomenon- compared to the amount of time we have had and enjoyed steady power supply in the contry. Whilst load shedding started to an emerging issue in 2011/12 it was not bad at all compared to other countries. It really got worse I would say 4-6 years ago, particularly for industry. That's really what I had in my mind when I indicated "relatively new". Other countries have never had stable electricity, in fact most countries, load shedding was always part of rationing the available generation, it's almost a daily given that there would be electricity cut offs. We have now come close to this level in the last 2 years or so. So it's always going to be "how worse" is it and there are country rankings on load shedding. They are topped by North AfricaI and Middle East at 23 days a month, followed by South Asia at 17. to Recently, South Africa is typically hit by 8 days of load shedding each month, lasting for about 5 hours each. Those are the current stats. 2021/2022 stats are a bit worse than this but we are still getting more electricity than worse perfomers. We need 3000MW- 6000MW of new generation capacity (minimum 3000MW) in the next 3- 5 years, then we will stabilize. This can be met by renewable energy that is planned now. Beyond that the situation will get even worse, we would need serious base load capacity from new nuclear power stations, to replace the aging coal fired power station. 10 years from now, we need to see a new 4000MW power plant/ generation capacity comming on line and then every 3-5 years beyond that - that's my guess. Otherwise we are saying more or less the same thing, we are sliding into more trouble.
I am curious if you have been able to make non-black SA friends (ie other minorities), because South Africa is very multiracial. I also would like to understand how you perceive white South Africans as opposed to white Americans. As a white South African I hope you have had good experiences of white people. I think many South Africans really feel backed into racial corners they don't know how to transcend and we do not know how to build understanding between communities. For example, I have been surprised at how much easier it has been for me to connect with black people and feel accepted as an African by black African people outside of South Africa. I understand that given our horrendous history, its understandable that there are major difficulties in overcoming structural injustices that have been formed around race. I am currently in Kenya and really I don't feel that Kenyans are looking for me to mess up, they just accept and even go so far as to say that I am also an African in their eyes when they find out where I am from. If feel really honoured and seen and it makes me want to try harder at becoming more African. In SA groups are always waiting to be offended by one another and affirm their prejudices against whoever one perceives as the 'problematic' group. its like we are addicted to it and it makes people less willing to understand each other and take the risk of intentionally building community with one another. I wish the national narrative helped us break down boundaries rather than reassert racial thinking. I would however like to mention the the majority of the wealth in this country is in the hands of a few white billionaires and some in the ANC and its patronage networks, which is predominantly black. The upper middle class is not exclusively white at all, it is in fact very multiracial. If you look at the statistics, you will find that most of the white population is not wealthy and does not own 80 of the wealth in the country. The middle income bracket of black households is about as big as the white middle income bracket today. There is a large multi ethnic middle class. Indians and Chinese also own a large portion of the wealth in SA. However when it comes to those who own the means of production there are a few individuals Asian, black, white or mixed that own 80% of the economy. But they are billionaire individuals. I am not denying white privileges' or racial inequality, or the fact that most black people are stuck in a structural underclass, but please be careful in applying American lenses or ANC government narratives that may have been true 30 years ago but are not that accurate today. Its really not that simple. The general narrative on land ownership is also misleading because although there are a lot of white agricultural land owners, the state also owns huge portions of land that it does not give to the people, tribal trust authorities also monopolize land that could be given to people and the black claimants of white owned land are, once they are granted land are rarely supported by government programmes, meaning that new farmers are slipping further and further into poverty. In may cases claimants are not even given title deeds. Or when new black owned farms fail due to the lack of effective support from government, the government takes back the title to the land from black farmers. The white farmer has no future, the black farmer has no future, the consumer has more food price inflation and the politician gets rich and portions out land to get more votes, regardless of how that land is used. Furthermore, although people have a right to housing, the ANC refuses to set up mechanisms that assist people in buying their public homes from the state, because the ANC wishes to control all aspects of society no matter what the cost. All the while skilled farmers who happen to be white are lost, cast aside, and discriminated against, adding to the general food insecurity of our people and pushing up prices of food and consolidating prejudices. The inequality in SA is horrible and unsustainable. Racism, sexism, and crime are major problems. But it is not helpful to frame it in black and white terms although, it is a convenient political narrative. I struggled to find a job in SA because of the colour of my skin and my gender, the state looks at my skin before it cares about what I have to offer.. okay I get that, cant really blame them, but what makes me livid is that it does not seem to care at all about the majority of the native people, and still blames minorities for all its failures, going so far as to abuse the term black economic empowerment to enrich only those with political connections rather than the broad masses of the proletariat. I cant tell you how many times I have wept at the state of things. So coming to Kenya has been like a revelation because somehow I feel like I can be white and an African and work for the future of Africans and I love it here. I just feel like nobody applies a racial expectation on me to be more than just a human, and I feel more confident at looking critically at my own position in society as a result. In SA some narratives about blackness have made me feel that I whiteness needs to be something evil that can be held up as an object of eternal derision, that can never be absolved, something criminal. I think this must be an inversion of how white people made black people feel for so long. I just hope one day we will allow each other space to transcend the convenient boxes. Because of these limitations, I am sure it is not easy for you to see the white minority as legitimate South Africans, nor find it easy to break into a world that can be at times quite hostile to black people. In SA everyone thinks they are victims of history. But of course the poor are the greatest victims, the large majority of which are black. Im really sorry if I sound like an arrogant white dude, I just hope my words may offer a window into what I hope is a more nuanced view of South Africa today. I hope you do meet people who you can identify with from my community. In many ways Kenyans are far ahead of us Saffers when it comes to seeing people for the content of ones character. Sorry for the rant, I can't agree more about December. Wish our country could be a safer and fair place for everyone. The violence of our history is a scar we are trying to heal from. Gender based violence is an institution spanning centuries, and is closely linked with alcohol abuse. So many of our people are just totally neglected. It makes me so sad. I'm so glad you like SA. It's so wonderful seeing African Americans coming to Africa. I hope it is somehow a healing process for you, and a life giving journey. I hope you can stay forever and help us make a better society. You know why south Africa is better than other African countries,we fight n fix our mess n we black People are in power anything we want we make sure we get it,it might not happen overnight but will eventually get it soon south Africa will better than Europe people just want things to perfect but they want to partake in this black empowement movement
South Gauteng High Court in South Africa has handed three life sentences and an additional hundred and six years imprisonment to two Nigerians for human trafficking. The pair, Frank Amaku (26), and Ilo Promise Somadina (25), were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime investigating unit in April 2016 at a hideout dwelling in Fourways where they ran a brothel and held victims captive. Five victims were rescued during the operation and taken to a place of safety. The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, applauded the investigation team for working around the clock to ensure that the accused were ultimately convicted and sentenced.

I feel most people who move to S.A only base their opinions on a certain location and then illuminate that to the whole country,i come from an area where there are no xenophobic attacks and crime is just something out of the ordinary it's not that major that it has everyone's attention. I Love this video though however i feel you should explore more of S.A especially more of Gauteng and not just Joburg.

Xenophobia in SA is like the relations of Caribbeans and African Americans. Very nuanced long history. Also ofcourse criminal elements are always at play. But no South African is going out of their way to oppress or discriminate against another black person who happens to be from outside of SA.
I have to disagree about the Caribbeans & AA thing. Many of us are mixed Caribbean and AA. I’m of Haitian decent. If there is beef it’s with the ones still on the island NOT living in America. So there is no interaction between the two but online.
Good take on SA. I'm just wondering though, whether the reason why you found the cost of living reasonable might be due to the strength of the dollar against the rand? Many South Africans find the cost of living high here.
This idea that South Africans think foreigners from the continent takes educational and job opportunities is a fallacy. In varsity spaces, social cohesion is top notch. Also, in the corporate space there is a great mixture of personalities from the continent and the world. The challenge is among the working class which is a result of low skilled foreigners fighting for scarce resources with low skilled South Africans. Which country in the world promote immigration of low skilled people? Wise up ladies and gentlemen and understood the storm that is brewing in SA. If you understand it, you may be part of the solution but if you don't, you will be part of a problem and therefore be treated as such. Ordinary South African are shocked at the evil that is being shipped to this country from all over the world and there will be a reaction to it.

South Africans aren't xenophobic we have like 3 millions Zimbabweans in this country who doesn't have proper papers to be in the country hence you lost your phones twice. As an American, if you have a remote job from the USA and live in South Africa then you can say living in South Africa is cheap but it’s not cheap for the South African people so you need to clarify that please. It’s not cheap in the sense that you earn dollars and change that to rands.. that gives you more money in your pocket. The same way it’s expensive for Americans to thrive in the USA is the same way Africans struggle to thrive or survive in all African countries.
A Nigerian man accused of human trafficking has been handed two life sentences in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. Alaba Makonjuola Asabi, 38, was arrested by the Hawks' Human Trafficking Section in connection with a 2018 case in which two Zimbabwean women were rescued after being forced into sex work, said Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Nomthandazo Mbambo. "A case of human trafficking was opened, which culminated in the arrest of a Nigerian male and the rescue of two Zimbabwean females," added Mbambo.

For the last three years I've had my phone stolen every year in Bloemfontein and once in Welkom my hometown (which was the only unarmed one)...this year I had enough after they swiped my A52 and decided to go for second hands, I'm done donating to the cellphone squad... The "xenophobia" as you so proudly call it is something you'll never understand. You don't even sound like someone who's taken time to understand where SAns are coming from and by the looks of things you don't seem to care, which is fine. But I'd advise you to not have an opinion on things you know nothing about. You also mention that your friends are from Zimbabwe and Nigeria and where ever else which should tell you that you getting your information from one perspective. Please respect us, you can at least do that.

I am fully aware of what Johannesburg looks like now compared to a few decades ago. People most angry about the illegals must also take responsibility for allowing the ANC to do this everytime they voted. Have you found out why those countries failed? Why does the ANC not care or speak to the leaders of Mozambique and Zim etc? When you find the answers you will understand why we are going the same way fast. In the meantime the US tourists to SA have increased by 287% and spend a lot of money that this failing economy needs so don't chase them away.
