I think I put too much pressure on myself. When I see people do major declutters I feel the need to “keep up” but in reality I’m content where I am with my minimalism and kind of have it down to where it makes my life more simple, like I want it to be… and when I fight that I defeat the purpose to begin with. Hope that makes sense ha.

I only struggle with impulse buying when my mental health isn't doing well, it's a good indicator that I'm falling into depression when I start impulse buying.

I understand and I am still working on breaking my compulsive need to shop when I am feeling down. Don't ignore the feeling, be aware of it and rather than seeking a rush from a good bargain or new item, find joy in an experience. I am trying to put my phone/computer down more and read or go outside. Hope this helps!

That post is worth so much! I've recently found out that i spend so much more money before important, big exams. I always fought it was because of chistmas, but is was the end of the semester i was nervous about. Same in june. Now that i know, i always deinstall all the shopping apps from my phone a month before the tests. That works!

My biggest struggle with minimalism is that I don’t live in my own home. So while my room has been significantly simplified and feels amazing to me, the rest of the house is my family and they sit on the edge between hoarding and just very cluttered. It’s discouraging and fills me with anxiety. I try to remind myself that I’m not in charge of their lives and my mother has (thankfully) started decluttering her craft room a little.

My hubby and I ended up having to immigrate last year. Long story but it was a "now or never moment". Sold everything we had within a month and we downsized to literally 2 bags. That was really difficult, having to get rid of everything that suddenly. Cars, clothes, furniture etc. Was a total shock to the system, didn't think I would struggle as much as I did. I'm much happier now though. RU-vid videos helped with coping of letting go emotionally, and made me feel normal for starting over with only the stuff I love

One of my biggest struggles in moving towards minimalism has been simply finding the time to declutter/organize and maintain the level of organization I’d like. I have to remind myself that things won’t always be perfectly how I’d like them, but that’s life, and I need to be happy with any progress I make, even if it’s small

My downstairs neighbor has been a dear friend after her sister passed last year. Although we've lived as neighbors for about 15yrs, we've hardly ever spoken to one another aside from the occasional hello. Discovering she was a hoarder almost took my breath away. She's shared with me how people have told her to throw her things away because it's trash. I have to bite my tongue and admit to her that she does have alot of stuff. But through some gentle encouraging, she is working her own way through a more intentional life. Like you mentioned we can't will people around us to clean and declutter, we can only celebrate when they take steps towards getting to a more desired life.

I burned myself out a year and a half ago with a major decluttering. I struggle with picking up and continuing the journey, but very mindful of what I bring back k to my home. I remind myself that the point is to keep moving forward even if only one small step at a time. You are right. Leading by example is the best way. My journey has caught the attention of both my mom and sister. It's fun to watch their journey. 😊

Yeah, the fifth Is my struggle right now. I try to minimize even more to be able to stay on top and to save. My biggest struggle with minimalism is the part when I am finished with decluttering. After the "fun part" it really needs to stay this way and sometime its hard to keep my place minimal. The rule: If one thing comes in our live - one goes - helped me a lot. 😘

My husband and I have been practicing sustainable minimalism for the past year, and I still have those urges to impulse buy, but now, I spend time walking around with items in my cart (physically in store or online) and take time thinking the purchases over now rather than just buying on spot. I appreciate you saying that it takes practice for us to consider intentional and purposeful purchases. I appreciate your videos! Yes, nostalgia items are tough to declutter. I’m still struggling with it. Have a full box of that and really no idea why. Except for tough to let go. I don’t count my wardrobe items, but it’s definitely a small wardrobe. And I only buy when I really need something, for example: I bough a pair of summer shoes realizing I didn’t have any. Yes, we’re in a materialistic world filled with fast fashion. Ads everywhere. Lucky for me, I have never been fond of shopping clothes. I find it so boring. But I did have too many shoes and handbags before lol! Love from Sweden 🌼💛🇸🇪

What a great set of reflections. Thank you. I’m early in my minimalism journey but one of the hardest things for me is letting go of clothing. I get very attached to (literally) material things. I’ve been able to begin to overcome this in teo ways. 1. Marie Kondo-ing it and thanking it for the time it’s spent in my life and realizing it can bring that joy to someone else. Or 2. If it’s very special but doesn’t fit or suit me anymore, it becomes something else. Generally a part of a quilt. This way I can give it new life without having it clutter my closet or mind. It’s non traditional but works for me!

My hubby is kind of a pack rat and not organized...we have a small house and his stuff creeps onto many surfaces...so the hardest part is letting the, walk their own path...we just had to compromise and i gave him certain areas that are his...but it is still a struggle! Also impulse shopping is still very difficult for me to control...i have the money but get suckered into deals or i am always looking for the next best thing! I am better at it, but still struggle!

These are really good tips. Especially that last one! Phew. I love when I’m excited about something and try to pass it on. My whole family just looks at me like I’m crazy. Specifically with becoming a minimalist and a vegan. I have yet to do either because of lack of support. But this helped me a lot. If it’s what I want for myself, I need to do just that and not try to force other people along MY journey. Wow. Thank you.

I completely relate to the challenge of overly-generous family members! Our friends respect our minimalist journey the most, but some family members do not understand since it's contrary to what they were raised to believe a home and life should look like. We do our best to be patient with them. We lovingly say "no thank you" when we can and we hope in time they will see that we are truly happy with less.
@darkskyes5339

Also some people just enjoy having things that minimalists would deem clutter, and they would NOT be happier by decluttering or getting rid of those things. Some minimalists need to realize that minimalism is not the ultimate high ground for everyone.

I didn’t say no to receiving it ☠️ however, I was able to say “no thanks, but thank you for thinking of me” when she texted me about other gifts she wanted to buy for me. I struggle with buying too many skincare products. I usually buy when there's a sale but the problem for me is that I want to try a lot of stuff and I fall for the mentality that I've got to get this product since it's on sale now. What I tend to do nowadays is that I think half a day if I see something on discount on a website. And then remind myself that sales come and go, I will get a chance to buy on sale again even before my previous products are completely finished because shops hold campaigns often.
@AshlynneEaton
@AshlynneEaton 3 года назад
Ive definitely been there! That mindset of “it’s on sale” can be such a dangerous one!! Some of the best advice for that I’ve heard is that if you wouldn’t buy it when it wasn’t on sale, you shouldn’t buy it when it is on sale. 🤍

I can quickly spend 20.00 a day on a bunch of little items and it just isn’t good! Also my goal when I be on my own is to be extreme in minimalism. I want to own only what I need and less of what I want. I want to spend much less on items I don’t need!

When I started to implementing minimalism in my life I fell (like a lot of people I think) into "extreme minimalism" too. I thought it had to be the ultimate goal for every minimalist and I was always rude with myself for not be able to be like that kind of minimalists, who have 3 t-shirts and ascend to nirvana every morning while meditating 😅 Just a joke, I really admire them, but that kind of life is just not for me... I was so obsessed with declutter and get rid of everything in my life to the point I started to feel really bored with my life. In that moment I understood the minimalism journey is very personal and you have to be happy and comfortable with it, not stressed, bored o disappointed. I don't like to meditate but I do exercise to improve my mental and physical health. I like to spend a considerable amount of money on clothes because I love fashion, but I educated myself about fast fashion and I don't buy anything that I don't like it just because it's trendy. Also, I'm happy expending a lot of time watching tv shows, movies and anime but thanks to minimalism I became very productive, I have good grades at university, I'm studying two languages and being responsible with all my relationships. The point is, every minimalist is doing great in their on way ❤️

My biggedt challange right now is decluttering since my husband doesn't quite understands why im giving away/throwing away/selline the stuff we have spent money on. And honestly, i guess it stops me from decluttering some stuff because i know we spent quite a lot money on it.. Another challange is to stop my husband buying toys for our kids.. And just things to our home. He often gets an idea and right Away wantd to buy it even when we night use it just once.. Like camoing chaires. He thought it would be fun to go camping and that we need camping chaires. I told him to first start camping and then if we do it often we can think if we need them.

What’s your experience with family members or anyone for that matter thinking the way you live is insane? My in-laws do not understand why we want to live with less, they are constantly judging our lifestyle saying that we just get rid of things all the time. It’s kind of annoying and I feel so judged. Here we are on this simple lifestyle journey that’s taking us over 5 years and still working on things only to be told that it’s irresponsible and our kids are lacking things 🤦‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ personally minimalism has helped me tremendously see how clutter affected every aspect of our lives, it’s helped so much to lower the inventory to a manageable amount while still living a life we love, my anxiety is way down! I just don’t know how to deal with family who come over and if we don’t own something they do then they tell us we need it or offer to buy it for us. The in-laws buy us things we don’t ask for or want or need quite often after we have had these conversations, I’m just at a loss. For example one night it was very last minute they came over and we were one plate short for dinner, we just used a bowl for one person no big deal right but my mother in law about lost it and said you don’t own enough plates, do I need to buy you some? I said no because we never have guests over and if we did I’d probably use paper plates lol Sorry for the long rant but it is just a hard battle in this journey to minimalism.

Well, Ashlynn's had two months to answer your question, and probably due to the thousands of comments in her videos she hasn't had a chance to answer it, (understandably) so here's my two cents. You wanna know the aspect of things with going minimal that has had the most positive impact for me? You don't? Well here it is anyways. PEOPLE! Over the past five years I've successfully offloaded almost everyone I used to associate with, and I don't miss a damn one of them. With me it was a different problem. I work in a rural small town hospital, and all these idiots wanted to be my friend, and were always phoning, or texting me 'just wondering if I wanted to get together for coffee'. Yeah right. All it amounted to, was I would spend the next hour ducking, dodging, and sidestepping nosey questions about who was in hospital, or who I had been talking to. Another one was when I'd get up to leave , one of the idiots would always ask when I was working next. It wasn't a casual get together, it was a friggen interrogation. The other one was, I literally would constantly see them driving past my house, looking to see if my car was parked out front, or if my lights were on. NO..I"M NOT KIDDING! I stopped going into restaurants, started blocking phone numbers, I buy car gas at 1:00 AM to avoid people, and I'm now having my mail delivered to a post office in the neighboring town, so I won't bump into people I used to know. One of them was driving past my house when I dared mow my own lawn one day, and she waved at me. I gave her the middle finger. She doesn't drive past my house, or talk to me anymore. If these meatheads you are inviting over to your house figure you're place isn't good enough, tell them to stay home, and stop inviting them. When you get invited to their place, find a reason to criticize THEIR house. Trust me...they will soon stop hanging around, and trying to talk to you. This crap about life being all about people, friends, and relationships is nothing but B.S. When I'm in my fifties as I am, I'll be damned if I'm answering to a bunch of deadbeat relatives, or lowlife's pretending to be friends, as to where I'm going, and what I'm doing. When I was a teenager, and my parent's wanted to know, I was fine with it. I'm long past that point now. Does this response help you at all? (LOL)

My issue is different varieties of the same thing. For example, I’ll buy wine and want to try different ones, then I end up with 12 bottles. Same with bourbons, cigars, fragrances etc It ends up being not so minimal of which I aspire to

@@AshlynneEaton I slowly started moving in that direction too with decants & miniatures. People think minimalism is simple & easy but it’s really not. A lot of systems, habits, maintenance have to be emplaced

I don't know how to deal with birthday stuff... I only have a lot of people over one day a year, on my birthday... but for that one day I still need 8 coffee mugs, 10 little plates for cake, about 6 wine glasses and 6 beer glasses and I hate all of it.... how do you do this? Do you have all of these things?
@carolevanlandingham8529

If all of that bothers you, use disposable plates, tablecloths and napkins, cups, cutlery, decorations, etc. Such a liberating feeling at cleanup time! (Unless you wanted to be especially fancy, that is.....my downfall....)

If it’s only once a year I might consider renting, borrowing what you need from a friend, or using disposable items! If you entertain more than that though it might might more sense to keep it though 🤍

If disposable isn't an option you want to take, maybe consider storing the dishes out of the way instead of keeping them with your everyday items. For instance, in another cabinet, a closet, or the basement. Label the bin so you can locate it easily when you need it.
