@@SomeRoomtoGrow fabulous! I leave incredibly long comments I am a 57 year old woman. I'm highly educated but I've forgotten seemingly everything I've learned. I have been under high high-stress for about 12 years which is so hard on your health. I was just stuck in a situation that I couldn't get out of and now I'm in a stranger situation that's also stressful but less dangerous. I'm sad because it's looking like I won't have a garden again. When it was said we only have about 50 Seasons to learn my heart dropped to the floor. I know it's so much and I intended to take in children aging out of foster that have a similar lifestyle in mind. But never got to experience it because of they're lacking in parenting. You'd be surprised at how many foster kids want to be plant-based vegan. They're interested in alternative building and gardening. And we're hoping to get property up far enough that we can set up maybe a Learning Center that still have our privacy. Describing this situation the last word that that sentences humorous LOL I'm glad to have found your channel I'm sorry I didn't know about it before. Once when I was in a hurry I was working near a feed store so I grabbed rabbit food because of the alfalfa wood litter pellets and it seems like there was a third? When I went to plant my plants in it it was like putting them into a fire pit it was also hot and new. Basically I planted my seedlings and and seeds right into a hot compost. The sad thing was is I knew better it just made sense and that horrible soil. That was one of my biggest mistakes. My other memorable mistake was pruning roses when I was angry and they had black spot again. There's a percentage of pruning that you're supposed to stick to and I might have gone a bit overboard. My praise roses turned into the rootstock which you see growing all over the us as those Bland tones of reddish-orange to a pinkish wild thing that grows anywhere and everywhere including empty lots because whatever was grafted that had that magnificent smell or look died off long ago and the strong roots kept going. And that's where mine ended up is a long offense where they got to stay even after I was long gone. So good to meet you and I will be back and talked way too much especially when I'm napping like this or when I wake up in the middle of the night hurting. I start talking like this voice to text and most of the time it turns out okay but sometimes the words you take after I hit that Arrow. And in my defense again, many times it doesn't hear me say the punctuation. And I can't see you to tell whether it did or did not. So wishing you the best this year and be thinking of me and that property to be found so that I actually have a home and won't be much of a garden the first year but definitely I'll be able to know what's going to happen the next. Your new friend G.

We all make mistakes in the garden. Some years it didn't even look like I was gardening, especially during the drought years. I also had issues with not addressing clay soil and blossom end rot. To get rid of some of my mistakes I tried a combination of lasagna gardening, hugel culture, and chop and drop weeding techniques. I will never look at a tree limbs, newspapers, cardboard boxes, or pulled weeds in the same way ever again. Last April as we heard about the pandemic starting up I didn't even bother to mow the grass before I built my new bed for the tomatoes. I can't believe I used to roto till the garden soil every year. First I put sticks and small logs (hukel culture?) like you mentioned down on the bottom of a new bed, next I added a layer of cardboard and or newspapers, then I added a huge pile of leaves I had collected for this project. Then I added coffee grounds from the local coffee shops and my own home brews. Then I piled on all the green matter I could find. Next I covered the whole bed with a thin layer of bagged composted cow manure. On top of that layer I placed a large coffee can full of bagged soil where I wanted to plant my seedlings. I dug a small hole, pushed the can of soil into the hole and planted the seedling inside of the new soil. If you want to direct sow a row of lettuce, lay down a row of soil about an inch deep, about 3 inches wide and as long as you want the row to be before planting the seeds. As you weed the bed throughout the season you chop and drop the materials around your plants as a mulch and to preserve moisture for the plants and the soil organisms. You have built, planted, and mulched the new bed. Like you I used galvanized fencing to keep the tomatoes off the ground and harvested when they started to change color. I did add lime, an aspirin, and fertilizer around each seedling. My new 20' long and 10' wide garden bed was done in a day. I had enough high quality fruit I gave some tomatoes to my neighbors, too. I have composted the old vertical way since 1971 but changed to this method three years ago. I had no compost pile taking up my available growing space, no blossom end rot, very little weeding, or watering, and I swear I didn't miss all that compost turning. Drought will still be an issue but at least all you have to do is water. I still have three large beds to address with this method but at least I know it will work. I will have to try planting peas in the Fall. Good luck on your garden this year!

Pole beans would work.

That’s part of our plan for this year. Pole beans and winter squash in the big beds, and we have garlic growing in the small ones until July.

For some of the plants under the shade you can get solar uv lamps you can hang them just above those beds or vines they can charge while there is sun and turn on when the shade hits them just to get the extra hour or two of uv the plants need they arnt expensive. A lot of people who do apartment farming use that to help the plants deeper in their homes that the sun doesnt get to alot.

That’s a great idea! We’ll definitely have to do that for our houseplants too.

You could get a Bees and butterflies wildflower mix 9for the smaller beds) and they will come and help pollinate your garden, and it gives them nectar, maybe even plant a milkweed for monarchs, because they only like the milkweed, and they are dropping in numbers. Also, in the shadier beds, you can grow veggies that grow in less shade like swiss chard, arugula, and other mustards.
@SomeRoomtoGrow

I was thinking the same thing! Pollinator flowers in the small beds to help out veggies in the big beds. We’ll move the tomatoes, peppers, etc. to the new sunny garden and keep partial shade greens in the raised beds.
@DanceswithDustBunnies

Those smaller beds would be good for herbs and flowers.

if you are having issues with plants and you dont know whats going on try planting in soil, organic matter belongs on top not in soil
@SomeRoomtoGrow
@SomeRoomtoGrow 3 года назад
Yes, I’ve come to that conclusion myself! Before we built these raised beds, we grew directly in the ground and our plants did much better. We’re trying to get back to that with our new food forest garden areas and so far it’s working great.
