the 5 ideas and their times are: 1. professor of sociology 2:16 2. documentary filmmaker 4:17 3. investigative journalist/opinions writer 8:28 4. attorney 12:11 5. professional clinical counselor 16:06
I love that you brought up documentary filmmaking I would have never thought of that! My high school sociology teacher taught us a lot of sociological concepts through film and documentaries.
yay i'm so glad you enjoyed it!! that makes me so happy, thanks for your comment. i definitely think film is such a powerful way to learn sociology and other important disciplines/issues. ur high school soc teacher knew what was up. 1 of my favorite professors in college has put a LOT of films, even fiction films, on our list to learn sociology and it gave me some new ideas about where i can go in the direction with soc.
Just started my first year at a community college, decided to take a sociology class based on my Therapist's recommendation- fell in love with it immediately! Love this channel and your tattoos are really cool!!!
I am considering studying sociology, i love everything about it, all the courses are just amazing. The only problem is, I haven't found a career that excites me and I am scared that when I get my degree I wont be able to find a job to fulfill me.
Despoina S. This is generally psycho. You should study 1 more major to get higher chance when you graduate. For example you can take Economics with Sociology . They are pretty related each other.
i feel the same way about sociology being amazing, but difficult to find a career. i have my back and forths about what i want to do all the time. the wonderful thing about sociology though is that it is so adaptable and diverse that you can seriously apply it to almost any field. i say give yourself more time to think it out and be open to many possibilities, it will find you. and you are allowed to change your mind. i have become more confident in my choice to purse documentary work as of late, after years of brainstorming on my path after soc. best of luck!!
There are so many: Social Work, marketing, counseling, HR, lawyer, management consultant (helps businesses),media planner (how to target certain groups of people), PR, and these are without jumping into concentration related to field!
@@MsCardio1 what is with asshats like you that love to come onto this video and any videos about sociology to shame working class people and people who choose this major? for the love of creator find a hobby and a passion that distracts you from such low life energy on the internet, spare the rest of the world from your hatred please. for anyone else reading this who's discouraged: DO NOT BE. i do not regret majoring in sociology. i adore it. i believe in you.
I really loved this video!!!! I’m from California and majoring in sociology - I plan on becoming an attorney but lately it discourages me so much when people start talking about how difficult it is to become one so I’ve also been exploring other options and being a professional clinical counselor also sounds amazing!!! I really want to do something that’ll impact others and help them like you said, I want to work with POC, individuals from low income families / LGBT Community etc. My dream is to become an attorney for kids who are in juvenile hall, kids who are underage lost and confused in a phase of their life that’s most difficult- I just want to provide that support and help defend them
Im sociology major student.. its so much fun seriously, i really fun when we going to debate some issues.. and i love it, its really opened your mind to the reality.
Just stumbled on your video and really enjoyed listening to your thoughts! You seem like such an intelligent and compassionate person. I will have to check out more of your channel. My degree is sociology-ish. It more so focuses on integrating family, gender, health and society, a BS degree. I am still looking for career ideas. I’m in the midst of serious mental health issues so I don’t feel I’d capable of counseling, but I really loved your point about how sociologists are well-rounded therapists. It made me think that if I ever straighten out my mental health, I’d love to help people like myself navigate society. Thanks for the great insights!!! I’d love to hear more about sociology in general. And why you love it.
Love your channel and personality so i subscribed. I was a physical therapy major but the science wasn't the science that intreset me. But i knew that i loved helping people but in a more social perspective. So i started doing human services and i got my A.A.S. from there i thought about social work but then i discovered sociology along the way. Now im a planning on doing sociology instead of just social work because i feel like its even more broad. I feel like it just puts me at a different view/route intsead of doing just social work. I am taking a qualitative reasearch next semester. I can't wait. I love doing research and experimenting on social issues and problems or just cultures in general. Its just so amazing and intriguing to me. I love youe career thoughts i love the documentary in film and also journalism. Never thought of it like that. Can't wait for your next postings. Love your personality i took the personality test years ago i cant remember my results but i know that its was green saying campaigner/ advocate or something of that matter 😂.
awww thank you so much for such a thoughtful reply!! i appreciate it so much. it sounds like you took an interesting path to find sociology!! im really happy ur satisfied with it. i think you will love the qual class you take. i took mine last year and even tho it was sooo much work it was SO rewarding. i felt awesome after it. also yes the campaigner=ENFP like i said!! hahaha maybe we're just the type of people drawn to soc! thanks for subscribing i hope i'll hear from you again!
great video! thank you for creating it and sharing your experience and thoughts. I have my BA in sociology and am now working on going back to get my MA/Phd in sociology or something closely related. I love to see that people have done these types of videos and want others to know how important this field of study is=)
I love your personality its so sweet honest and heart felt i subscribed to i'm considering taking this in college you have opened my mind more about it. THANKS
I'm a pre-nursing major and I had to take 2 sociology classes and I fell in love with the subject! I'm thinking about changing majors but I'm too scared lol
I was surprised that 3 of the 5 careers are ones I'm considering! I'm studying wildlife conservation, but I'm much more interested in sociology aspects of environmental issues (illegal wildlife trade, deforestation, pollution, etc.) than biology aspects. (I don't really want to become a wildlife biologist even though that's what my program is for.) Topics like animal rights and public health are also important and interesting to me. Documentary films and journalism help in educating people and facilitating behavior change. I was also thinking about becoming a lawyer or policy person to help the situations improve as I learn about all of these topics.
that is so so awesome! that makes me super happy that you were thinking of all of these careers! i totally agree with everything you said. i love all the different aspects of these career pursuits and i think i've finally committed to one! thanks so much for watching!
@@pluf8751 I believe you're right! I don't think I was aware of that term at the time of comment, but became familiar with it after. That actually just gave me an idea to ask a wildlife biologist what an environmental sociologist is to see what her perspective is. :D
Thank you for this video! It was very helpful in a lot of my thinking. I just took an interest profile. Sociology came up and I'm quickly falling in love with this study area.
I like all of the options but I like the 5th option a lot. You’d probably be interested in the “social model of disability” especially as is described by Jenara Nerenberg in her book “Divergent Mind.” I’m thinking of majoring in biopsychology and minoring in sociology. But I might want to major in sociology though: so many options! 😅
Im so glad I found this video. Most articles I find online have this stigma towards sociology it sucks. I changed my major from Bio Sciences to Sociology. Thank you for this.
I want to say something about going to college to better your life. I have not one but two college degrees and work as a Security Guard patrolling floors. A degree is not needed to be a guard. Look Here: 1. Sociology B. A. (Lehman College) 2. Liberal Arts & Sciences A. A. (City Tech) All this academic training for nothing. I'm not knocking education and college. For example, if you like Sociology, don't stop at the four-year degree level. Sociology can lead to a decent job if you earn a Master's Degree or beyond. Otherwise, you are truly wasting your time and money. I hope this helps.
i agree that college is not for everyone and is not always the best or most cost-efficient path. however, that is not what this video is about or who this video is for. this is for people already majoring in sociology or who want to major in sociology. each person's situation is very different and unique, you can't make a blanket statement that otherwise it is a waste of time or money. it also depends on how you use your time in undergrad to maximize your resume and portfolio, so again it's not always a waste of time and deterring people because of just your individual experience might be doing someone a disservice!
@@CarolannJane : I have already responded to this comment. I disagree. My original reply is exactly what someone seeking a degree in sociology needs to know. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that if sociology is your cup of tea, to go beyond the four-year level. Otherwise, you are wasting precious time, money and energy.
Hi Jane! I am Alikhan and i'm now studying at sociology bachelor's degree. These recommendations are so beautiful but i also wanna to know about what can i choose as master majors after sociology? Thanks for everything
in 6-7 months I'll be getting my BA in Sociology, I wanted to be a teacher or counselor. Now, I'm not too sure, I'm lost and IDK what's going on with my life... Loved your video (Doc Filmmaking) was pretty cool option!
it's okay, i'm confused about what i want to do with my future on an every day basis. i change my mind constantly. eventually we will figure it out and it will all work out in the end i have to believe.
As watching your video, you mentioned not believing in changing a system from the inside out (14:10). Out of curiosity, because I feel the same way, I wanted to know why you think this way:)
If your Sociology department offers different tracks, you should look into anything "data analyst" related. That's what I did and I was a healthcare data analyst for a few years with hospitals before landing in a leadership role in healthcare and now work from home. Sociology is versatile, but you need good mentors/guides to get you in the right path. Best of luck!
I wanted to be a therapist but then I read about how the traditional psychology model doesn’t focus on social issues that affect the person and in a way it helps perpetuate the systemic abuse on this individuals by labeling the persona as if they are the ones who are wrong and have to learn to live in a messed up society. Now I think I want to study sociology but I’m still interested in being a therapist since I have a history of an eating disorder depression and anxiety (which was caused by social issues and I hate it when therapist ignore this issues). I’m thinking of majoring in sociology and maybe also psychology and then doing humanistic of systematic psychotherapy. I’ve read about all of the “anti psychiatry/ psychology” and it sometimes discourages me from being a therapist but although I think medicalizing mental issues isn’t right I still think that therapy is important but we need to revolutionize the way in which therapy is done. Therapy should advocate social change and social justice not teach the victim of social oppression that something is wrong with them as an individual and that they need to learn to live with the stress, anxiety, or depression that comes from oppression.
xxx yes yes yes!!!! to all of this. absolutely. i would love to see more radical therapist and therapist focused on social issues and social health incorporated on an individual level. 100%! you can be part of a new movement in therapy to focus on social psychology and implementing new therapy models. i totally believe in you.
Hi. Can you explain the theory of Stuart Hall (representation) ? now, as we know, interactions between people have changed. one of them is the presence of social media. I have a final assignment on that subject, I use representation theory from Stuart Hall. but, I still lack reference. hope you can help me.
I'm interested in doing sports journalism, but my current university does not offer the specific major. So I joined as a sociology major. Would it help to become a sports journalist?
Minsung Kim does your university offer journalism? sociology can be used for sports journalism but you might find yourself not learning a lot about how to report and the more specifics related to journalism. it will probably be more research heavy. you can always choose to take the opportunity to make your papers and projects related to sports though!
Why not double major? Qualitative research, like ethnographic interviews, on wich sociological research is also based on, can prepare you for many tasks of journalism, but majoring both sociology and journalism can max your knowledge and chances. Good luck.
I am a year away from getting my bachelors degree in sociology but I don't want to pursue it any further than that and am only using it as a stepping stone to get a masters in social work so that is another route you can take. I want to get my license in clinical social work so I can make a decent living while working in the helping field. If you are a sociology major it doesn't mean you cant pursue other degrees. My only question is what type of jobs I would be able to get with a bachelors degree in sociology to pay off my student loans.
absolutely! that's a great field to go into and super related. im going to be making a new video of this and adding 5 more careers and that's on my list! i have a lot more ideas for it as well.
Clarinet Lemon unfortunately i dont believe you can. you would have to attend law school after undergrad. the only other way to become a lawyer is to study under a practicing attorney i believe.
"Complete a Bachelor's Degree Program. A bachelor's degree is the minimum educational requirement for admission to law school." -- Found this. So that's just the prerequisite to applying to law school. Hope that helps.
