When thinking about the European double-decker aircraft, usually the key carriers come to mind: Emirates (of course), Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, and a few others. But several more had once thought about operating the type. These airlines even had firm orders placed, and some had examples produced before the whole gig was canceled. In today’s video, we briefly examine a few not-to-be Airbus A380 operators.

Out of all the orders that got cancelled for the A380 the Virgin order was the one I was most looking forward to. Would have been gorgeous to see.

It was dead years before it was officially canceled. People in the industry knew they weren’t gonna take it.

Air Austral actually made sense. Reunion is basically France's Hawaii. There's enough demand to fill all the seats, just like ANA does between Tokyo and Honolulu.

Most of them were optimistic they could challenge the big boys pre-2008

@@mirzaahmed6589 Skymark most certainly does still exist. They were bailed out by ANA and some Japanese private equity companies [including a government investment fund]. ANA also took over 3 of the Skymark A380 order.

I was aware of Virgin canceling its orders. ironically many model aircraft were made in the Virgin livery based on their early orders.

Imo, they were really not serious about the orders. They only wanted to ride the PR wave.

For the past 60+ years, I have always chuckled at reports that the next prototype "jumbo" would include such spectacular features as a spa, fitness center, lounges, showers, salon, etc. Of course, any of these features could be included on any wide-body, but no airline would add these non-rev options at the expense of another 12.5 seats in cattle class.

Kingfisher actually did plan to operate Blr - SFO 18 hour direct flight. Eventually the airline went bust because of its owner defaulting loans and got caught in a huge scam. Read about him..

Hi, well answer to your first question, i have two answers, Virgin Atlantic because as you put it, interior design concept and Air Austral but not because of its dense configuration, but rather to see an Airline in the Indian Ocean that is about two-three hours flight away from home being the very first to have the type in their fleet anf livery. Second question, my fav airline that operates the type now, easy 1st Place Emirates Airlines.
