5 Steam Locomotives Running Back And Forth With Some Railroad Switching. Steam Powered Passenger Trains Running On Reopened Section Of Old Track. This Is The Cass Scenic Railroad In Cass, West Virginia. The Passenger Train Has A Red Caboose And Is Seen Crossing The Railroad Bridge Near The Shops. This Is The Annual Parade Of Steam.
Includes old Western Maryland Railway high rail car picking up orders on the fly. This is the first time in 50 years for that to happen. We see the steam engines going back and forth and changing tracks near the railroad shops and water tower. The line along the river has recently been restored all the way from Cass to Durbin, West Virginia. These trains are taking passengers along the river on part of that line. Check out the caboose at the end of the train! All kinds of awesome stuff in this video that I almost forgot to post. These are real steam locomotives that burn coal. Four of them are Shay locomotives and the other one is a Climax locomotive.
This was filmed during the 2024 Parade Of Steam. Cass Railroad was a logging railroad that interchanged with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway in Cass, West Virginia. The main line that you see them operating on is the old C&O main line. Cass Railroad ran up the mountain behind the shops. The tracks are still in use for passenger trains there although the mountain tracks were not being used on the day that I was there.
Don't miss the Live Action Pets and the slide show that comes from the video.
Filmed Saturday, June 15, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!
Please thumbs up and watch another JawTooth video to help my channel.

The "Shay" types are fascinating. Many of them worked in the woods, pulling flat cars loaded with heavy fresh cut logs out of the hills on very rough and steep tracks, many of which were abandoned and torn up again after a few seasons. As you can guess, these old dray horses weren't built for speed but have tractive effort that still puts many modern diesels to shame.
@rastaralph7154
@rastaralph7154 День назад
@@robertf3479 I was thinking they are all wheel drive unlike most of the ones I've seen. I used to love drawing them when I was younger and the pistons were always on the bottom at the front. I had the experience riding in the cab when I was a baby but I was told I just cried with the noise.

That looked like a pretty cool place. There is a small railroad museum just 15 min from my house here in Tn. The Little River Train Museum. There is a Shay engine on display and I think was the last one used to bring logs out of the Smoky mountains back when they logged this area. I know you said in previous videos that your steam engine views were down. For me personally why I like the steam engines and they sound cool they seem kind of lame anymore. They are so outdated and don’t have a huge amount of power. They don’t have the excitement and power of standing next to the modern equipment that’s on the rails now. Thanks for making these awesome rail places available for us to see! Where I live I never get to even hear a train horn or see one. Occasionally I can hear one or see it if my timing is right when I go to Maryville Tn. and they are taking something to or from Alcoa Aluminum.😊

JT those old Shea engines wasn’t built for speed, but they would dang sure pull. I know a lot of the logging industries down here in south east Louisiana they used to use them there’s old dummy lines all through the honey Island, Swamp and out in the Piney Woods, where they went through there and cut all the virgin pine and in the swamp they cut all of the white and red Cyprus trees. There’s still stumps that you can see down there on the river and those things are 10 foot across the top of them and you can still see the notches that they cut into them to put the boards to stand on so they could get up there and cut them down but anyway another awesome video and as always you stay safe out there and watch your back and we’ll see you on the next one

Thank you, Jaw Tooth, for another video from your trip to the Cass Scenic Railroad earlier in 2024. I found the switching of the steam engines from one track to the other track interesting to watch. Tis switch move was the way to move the engines off the mainline track to the track that tacks them to the engine house for servicing. You were talking about trying to capture one of the engines taking water from the water tank. Didn't you capture a couple of the engines taking water from the water tank on one of the earlier videos from this trip? I liked the portion of the video with the train going on the revitalized trackage toward Durbin, West Virginia. It is good to see that the Cass Scenic Railroad is adding "new" trackage to their system! (Posted 21 September 2024 at 2007 CDT.)

There is a big steam mill engine in that powerhouse but they will not let you into it to photo all of the equipment that engine provided all the power for the mills machines via the shafts and belts you see laying there. It also has a big dynamo that generated all the electricity for the town when it was all company owned . Sad to see it just sitting there rusting away .

Con someone explain in detail how this CASS operation runs solely on steam motive power yet the UP "Big Boy" needs that diesel? Before someone says Im stupid, i understand that air brakes need charged and they try to say that the diesel is needed for braking....well why not here? Either these CASS consists are exempt from any braking rules or they've fitted steam driven air pumps. I also get that 4014 runs on Class A lines, but still, affixing a steam driven brake air compressor is SIMPLE. If its an issue of providing electrical power to the electrified part of the 4014 consist that could be done with probably a 30KW generator lashed into that mail car they pull around....certainly doesnt need a loco. Some people say that 4014 is just a whistle being pushed around and Im starting to question whether that's fact. Something is NOT being said about 4014.

One of those remote locations where everything else would seem like it's on another planet.. Watching that Caboose backup with the combine power car no doubt was the highlight of the day even into the 1950s on some of these small branches as it was the more reliable form of Passenger transport but also mail. Express and freight. Even after the steam disappeared one can just imagine those GP9s running wide open climbing some of these steep grades. It is nice to see that they do have a good selection of restored Freight cars from that area to operate authentic train from that time period. Of course steam will always be the real attraction and the sights.sounds and smells of the Shays. I guess the ultimate would be the huge Western Maryland Shay pushing that Jordan plow through a deep snow
