fightTIPS Thanks so much! I've asked in a few videos, hoping you would be able to see my comment on one of them. Thanks for taking the time to listen and help us all out! Keep up the great work, Shane.
I just got my girlfriend into boxing with me and I love being able to send her your videos. For the times I can't give her all my attention (like mid-class), these can help her learn the tactics and techniques. You're the man Shane!

I enjoyed the Iron Fist series, but I thought it got pretty tiring listening to the main character refer to himself in the third person over and over 'I am the iron fist' Yeah, we know, enough already with the exposition! Lol. Shane's extended fight scene'Trigger' was well put together, just maybe next time skip out on the whole 'Help me. Mario!' kidnapped love scenario. So many movies are based around that. Why not a bar brawl, or just some guy in the wrong place at the wrong time?
Enjoy your vids! Been doing no gi bjj down at ATT Atlanta under Jucao for years and recently stopped due to getting older, 50, and being sore for days after rolling, and two knee surgeries. I turned to the heavy bag to still burn calories and aggression. Your tips have been excellent! Thank you!
Really good Shane! I’ve never hit any bag with gloves on before, but every style trains differently I guess :) one big kicking mistake I’ve noticed from taekwondo students, is they like when the bag moves back, so often they push the bag and sacrifice good form. Instead of having a thrusting or snapping motion, they will often push the bag. 🤔 maybe I should make a video on that?
sometimes I'll painfully hyper extend limbs when the bag moves from combos or if I miss a big shot... seems like bringing the elbow out instead of keeping it in textbook style while punching seems more powerfull... seems like when the bag is josseled around after a multiple hit combo injury occurs after the initial strykes start moving and spinning the bag every where.... hard time snapping punches back (my friends say it's because bad habits from karate?) can you leave a strike out there instead of snapping it back baiting the opponent for a luckily predicted correct counter strike? having a REALLY hard time utilizing the two knuckles in hooks and over hands without pain at the elbow .... hard time learning over hand... and sometimes arm baring myself in spinning backfist.... or Bas's left hook style clothesline.... THANKS SO MUCH COACH, sorry to BLAB on, BLESS you and your family
+Blue Avenue yeah man I have chronic neck pain and broke two fingers from it. I didn't mind and got back to training asap but now I'm gonna be out for probably 12-16 months approx now that my acl and meniscus tears will require surgery. I personally find kickboxing 10x safer lol
I remember watching Shanes videos when I started training combat sports like 3 years ago and being impressed by his speed, and coming back now still impressed by his speed
Michael Hyde look up the 30 - 30 -30 drill, when I start I do round 1 only lead jab, 2nd round jabs and crosses, 3rd round mix in body shots, 4 round mix in some power shot (both body and head, 5th round 30,30,30 drill, 6th back to jabs only... and by then I'm ready to puke.
Good points, Shane. I appreciate your experience and advice; however, I will disagree with always wrapping and gloving. Several boxing coaches advocate training in the bag with just leather work gloves. I cycle between the two ends. The key is to listen to what the joints and bones are telling me through pain. Again, thank you.
GEt other coaches. As a boxer you are going to hit the heavy bag wiht thousands of strikes a week. Without wrapping and descent gloves you are going to destroy your hands . Look at the advise from the experts like "precision striking "on youtube
I've been doing alot of open palm strikes to the heavy bag, as it helps keep my wrist injury free. Is that effective from a training perspective or should I focus 100% on gloves?
I’ve been on my heavy bag for like an hour and a half yesterday, only gloves no wraps. My knuckles hurt, wrist and forearm sore, hard to make a fist, noticed a lot less power in my punches today too. I should probably get some wraps.
can you make a full tutorial about drill for heavy bags?? when im practicing i dont know what to do with the heavy bag, just started muay thai can you help?? that would be great
I train at Adrenaline with Mark Homonick. Sometimes he makes us do bag drills. He would set 3 minutes rounds. The drills would be, 1 minute circling around the bag, throwing feints, land a couple of shots, then for 30 seconds we push the pase. Landing a lot of shots, and power shots. Then go back to circling and feints. This drill is to keep us moving and figuring out timing and distance and get the opponent to react. Then once we find and opening or we corner him/her that's when we throw with volume and power
Here might be a very amateur question or request. Can you do an audio/video that a beginner can use when hitting the heavy bag. Basically combos mixed with like common counters. Kind of like Jab, jab cross, :pause: jab, cross, left hook ( common counter ) like slip left or whatever the common counter to that combo is. If that makes sense, thought about making one myself to use, but I've never done anything but hit the bag in my garage. So I don't know the typical counters or feel of actual pace for boxing and things. I feel someone with your knowledge would do much better at the timings and pace and things. Then maybe when I hit the bag in a gym and a pro is whispering in my ear combos and counters, I won't feel so dumb when people are starring. Love your videos btw, keep doing your thing.
Calmness gives you the possibility to assess the situation and act on it. Calmness you archieve as a result of charachter building knowing that you can overcome any situation and ''defeat'' any opponent if you make the right choices.
Sometimes you can do a HITT workout. The old school fighters used the heavy bag for those power workouts. But the reason they did that, was because it was for stamina and conditioning.
yeah i watched a few fighters hit the heavy bag and realized its not just about speed and power, but also endurance and foot work also... thanks great vid wish i seen this 3 weeks ago lol 😁
Hello Shane! I want you to please recommend me things that I can do for not exhaust my hands. You know? Some kind of cardio to resist more with powerful punches in the round. Thanks man, greetings from MX!
Shane, I notice with you and every other experienced martial artist, that you guys look so fluent and technical when hitting the bag, kicking, and moving. When I record myself I don't look like that, am I doing something wrong or am I just not at that level yet?
Great stuff shane i just discovered your videos, and they really help in trimming the fat on my technique,Can you make a video about set ups for takedowns? Thanks again man.
Shane i love these videos they really help me improve my boxing and give me something to work on and allot of my coaches now i have been improving and wanted to say thanks.
when i started muay thai i was using 12 oz gloves didn't have a clue about it i just pick up the gloves i can find in the store, 12 oz was ok i wrapped my hands too. but i recently read that gloves sizes and weight should be depending on your weight too. now im using 16oz and when i wrap my hand it won't fit inside the gloves anymore so im not using the handwrap anymore. i use 16 oz for hitting heavybags, focus mitts, thai pads and during sparring
Also...keep your fist clenched, or close, even in those bigger bag gloves. Some people use different sizes, and in the “bigger” boxing gloves, I’ve noticed people aren’t making a fist. Their hands hurt later on because of it. So, no matter the gloves, make a fist.
Hey Shane, i'm trainning in a muay thai gym, and i have very good boxing skills ( just hands ) , and when it comes to lags and arms fight ( muay thai fight ) i'm very weak, i can't fight with lags and arms at the same time. please make a video about what i can do to improve my all body fighting skills , thank you and i love your channel you'r the best
+Slave Owner Stephen Thompson I'm not stupid I've done boxing when I was 5 the tkd (ITF) and now muay thai and others but smart boxers are light on there feet they step in and out on the balls of there feet and idk if your dad is a dumb boxer but boxers ain't heavy that's why people say there dancing in the ring
+Slave Owner Stephen Thompson I'm just saying just because of him doing boxing don't mean that's why his kicks suck and I said to be more square then you say that good boxers are heavy on feet they aren't if they were it's to the back for a right (back) hand
Please do a video about how to deal with really offensive sparring mates. For example there is a guy that we all get fed up with because he plays really hard like he's in a real fight even if it's just a sparring session. And yeah, trying to convince him to ease up doesn't help. It can get dangerous for both competitors.
Wish I found this video 20 Mins ago. Just got done with my first workout using a punching bag and made just about every mistake you pointed out in this video. Oh well lesson learned, next time I'll do better.
shane, a bit superficial of an analysis. I avoid wrapping my fists not to condition knuckles, but so that I train my muscle memory to squeeze the fist. This is related to, first and foremost, the wrist, hand, and fingers' muscles. I warm them up with slight punches and later go full strength. Never broke them through my thin gloves.
Great video , but myself i never wrap my hands , i hit so f..g strong that heavy bag for 30 minutes, all the combination possibile exist and i mouve around that bag!
