I've been doing my own nails since 2017 and I've learned so much from RU-vid. I will never pay for another person at a salon to do them. I get sooo many compliments because they look professionally done!! Awesome video!
I’ve started doing my nails 6 months ago and so far I’m super happy, I’ve saved a lot of money, even though I bought everything I needed it. One of my favorite channels is: Longhairprettynails
I really want to get into doing my own- my biggest problems is what to start with, making sure I'm keeping with the same products to begin to ensure no issues, getting the tools and not running up the bank. Like I feel like I'm going to need to buy from one place over a long period to get everything just to start off
I just started this video so I'm SO glad I see a comment that let's me know these work, and know I'm not wasting 15 mins watching this lol. Also what are you doing? Just your natural nails? I'm doing polygel for the first time EVER. I've never even tried doing my own nails before and my first set came out better than most SALONS do & the "unicorn chrome" powder I used & rhinestones I put on would have ***EASILY*** cost me around $80 (esp for a full set & not a fill). Plus its literally almost been a MONTH & i only have a SMALL amount of lifting on my pinky nail from hitting it off something. All the other nails are so grown out (lol) but COMPLETELY really still ON there. I'm literally AMAZED... I used to get my nails done at the salon for literally 15 plus yrs & a set NEVER lasted me longer than 2 weeks (& THAT'S pushing it) without lifting, chipping, cracking or just completely coming off smh. I am SOO glad I came across a polygel video & started really watching bc I bought a polygel starter kit that came w everything you need even a lamp, I got a drill & both for under $100. I'm so obsessed I ordered a TON more fun stuff for them (like diff polygel colors (literally a ton lmao, like neons, pastels, glitters),all different kinds of shapes & colors of rhinestones, little decorations & decals, I got a set of gel polishes (or maybe 2 or 3 😳😂🤣) but it's SOOOO worth it that I'll NEVER have to step in a salon AGAIN & honestly half the time I either left not liking my nails. Whether it was the way they shaped them, or the design/color even (I'm just one of those ppl who won't complain lol smh) & I'd notice they were either crooked, or lumpy in a spot or two, or they weren't fully painted like from sidewall to sidewall) & STILL always tipped good smh. This was so worth it. Sorry for the super long comment lol I'm just so passionate about certain things (makeup, hair, nails, dupes for "high end" crazy expensive stuff, tips & tricks for things I've learned to make my life easier on any & everything lol, & colored contacts...haha) I actually have a RU-vid channel. It's pretty small but growing & it's mainly reviewing colored contacts right now but next time I do my nails (which will be very soon) & when I get this order shipped to me of some new makeup I just ordered which will also be soon like tomorrow or the next day) I'm planning on making videos about all of that stuff and really expanding my content. I'd love it if you joined my little family (lol) & subscribe! 💗💕🥰🌸🌻
I feel your like me with public speaking, so nervous but you obsessively know you sh$$!! Thank you for making this, complete game changer please more videos from Tracey 💗💟
After having acrylics removed and doing gel manicures at home, my polish was lifting so I came here to see what I was doing wrong. This video was extremely helpful. I applied two coats of base polish to provide a stronger foundation and learned the importance of prep work. I keep looking at my nails with pride. Thank you for sharing these tips!
I've gotten so many bad gel polish manicure that I started doing it myself and have gotten better results. I will be implementing a Double Base in my steps going forward. Thank you so much for these tips
@@Sheywh12 I ordered those beginner sets they sell on ig. For a beginning I think it's okay, but be careful n always use clean tools cuz infections. As you get better invest in professional gels cuz it definitely makes a difference. I asked my nail tech n she recommended me a local shop where they sell em so try to look for something like that available to u. For nail art I think eyeliner brushes do the job very well
Wow my jaw is on the floor. Idk who told me that I needed to smooth out my nails as much as possible before gel, but this makes WAAAAY more sense! I was shocked that my gel was only lasting 3 or so days, now I know to leave that texture on the nail! DUH! Thank you sooooo much for this tip.
I’ve started doing my own uv gel nails. There is litererally no prep work when getting your nails done. It’s like you are on a conveyer belt and they get you out as quick as possible.
So true. That’s why I decided to learn to do my own. When I’d get them done at the salon they’d start peeling after a few days. When I do them myself it takes me 30-40 minutes but they last a whole 2 weeks at least! It’s really worth learning to do your own if you can’t find a good salon.
My biggest problems with salons has always been that they pile on products (acrylic, gel), and my nails get so thick that When I try to scratch an itch, it’s like rubbing a ball on my skin (for lack of better metaphor). I love a sharp edge and my nails looking real but long. I am a terrible peeler of gel too so it has to just blend all around the edge. Where I live there are no true nail artists. Can’t even find many that do flowers (just stickers). I love doing my own nails and have learned to do ombré and flowers from RU-vid. It’s meditative and I can quickly fix any chipping myself (or worse when I have anxiety and start peeling it). My right hand is always harder of course, as a right-handed person. I’m also always doing home projects and gardening that would quickly destroy and professional manicure. I like when someone comments my nails and I can truly say thank you because I did it myself. It’s such an expensive thing to have someone else do. If you can learn to do what you like it is so worth it!! Also far less risk of an infection from some random salon not taking care of their tools or those videos of cutting cuticles to harsh redness. I don’t ever cut my cuticles and they are fine and not noticeable.
I recently started doing my own gelish brand led nails. I invested in all the tools I need. So far it’s been going well. I actually do my own as well as my daughters. It’s so nice to have these videos at our disposal. Extremely useful And most helpful. Thank you 😊💅🏻
I have searched so much for what to do about my thin nails. The grit is really too much for how thin they are but i love gel nails so I do them at home. THANK YOU for the tip about doubling up the base layer! THANK YOU!
I am so grateful for this channel & YN for teaching me so much on nails. I've always loved having beautiful nails on me or just seeing them on other people but was always discouraged having them done because not only are they not cheap to do them, they would always peel, chip or lift after a couple weeks on me, with acrylic or gel. Now that I've started doing them on myself for only 2 months they last me 3 or more weeks on and look fabulous on me, I get so many compliments from people asking me where I had them done? I'm always so proud to say I did them! All from YN teachers here on this channel. I just wanted to take the time to say, Thank You Young Nails for so much knowledge and inspiration I get from you all, I truly appreciate all of you.
I been doing my own nails for more then two years from gel polish to my own acrylics! You guys helped me to solve so many issues! Even when I was having my nails done at the nail salon they always been falling off! Your channel been so informative I have no more issues with doing my own nails no more
i’ve been getting my nails done at a salon and they keep messing up my nails & now watching this i see why, they’ve basically been doing it allllllll wrong. I ordered some gel and a uv lamp and i’m gonna start doing them by myself. Great video btw very helpful and to the point
Omg!!! Thank you thank you thank you. I have a job demo at a top LA salon this week, and they want me to do a gel manicure before I'm hired. This really helps me out alot! ❤❤❤
Bought my first gel polish setup today, and decided to have a go with about 2.5 hours before work. The learning curve was *steep* but I'm pretty proud of how they came out despite teaching myself on the fly. I'm watching this video after work, even though I won't be changing my polish for at least a week. My biggest mistake was picking up too much base coat, the first finger (my pinky) is THIOCC. But I'm stoked to have a more durable option since my line of work fucks up my nails within a couple of days.
Love watching the young nails videos. They are so insightful. And just proves that no matter how long you are in the industry there is always room to learn new techniques. Thank you for all the awesome tips.
Brilliant advice. Qualified 9 yrs ago but only do my own nails. Has given me the confidence to know that I am doing them right. Thank you so much guys. ❤
Just recently starting doing my nails again, after discovering gel polish and how fast it dries compared to old-school nail polish. I've never gotten the "peeling" or "lifting" issue, however it's been hard re-learning the dexterity to not end up with polish all over the edges of my fingers, especially when using my left hand to do my right nails! I try to clean them up before curing, because it definitely hardens the gel onto the flesh, which gets HOT, but sometimes I miss a spot, and I've had to resort to using the stuff that's meant to remove gel polish from nails in like 5 minutes. And that does work, it lets you scrape off the missed spots, but damn it burns! It also does what you said, if the part that's misplaced is on the cuticle, it leaves a ridge that I CANNOT leave alone, so I end up trying to file it smooth right there at the cuticle. That works, if I don't go crazy with the file, but it can leave the base of the nail a little unsightly, if I'm not very careful. My nails have always been thick and strong, but as I've gotten older, I've noticed that they're a little thinner and more bendy than they used to be, and a couple of them developed odd quirks like a vertical split, or starting to peel and get ragged at the tip, which meant that for those nails, I could never grow them long. Builder in a Bottle is a godsend, allowing me to grow even my troublesome nails long! A few of my other nails have the vertical ridges, which is very unsightly with regular polish, but again, Builder in a Bottle to the rescue! It smoothes them so nicely, you'd never know that their natural state has those ridges. I've got some of the thicker Builder, but it seems to be harder to learn how to use it. Maybe in time, with more experience, I can use the thicker Builder gel more expertly. My biggest issue is my perennially ragged cuticles. I started back doing my nails just so I could finally, hopefully, stop picking at the damn things, but so far that hasn't happened. I got some of the Sally Hansen cuticle remover, and use the "buffing" bit in my efile to try and remove/smooth those cuticles, and they're better, but still having issues. I can't understand how all the nail models have such perfect, nearly cuticle-less nails!
Thank you! This video is so helpful. Now I know why my gel nails start lifting on the sides. I'm new to doing my own nails because they charge so much at the nail salon. I have everything I need except maybe the bonder. I'm going to head out to the kitchen and give it another whirl. I will master this!!
GREAT video! I do my own nails & have always had trouble with peeling. You just showed me that my mistake is filing off the 150 scratches that adhere the gel polish. WOW & THANK YOU SO MUCH! And thank you for the pro tip about nails with ridges! Hugs from Florida.
I ALWAYS forget to rough up my nails a bit for gel to stick and my nails are naturally so thin and fragile that I’m always nervous to rough them too much. This video was one of the most helpful in depth ones I’ve seen thank you!
This video explained so much to me! I have a super oily nail bed and now I understand why I have lifting after just one day! I followed the steps and can tell the difference immediately after applying the gel polish. Thank you!! I also learned from trying all the products, that I have to use Mani-Q gel as my base and anything else goes on top. So much fun!
i didn’t even realize the acetone was the problem🥴i’ve been doing that ever since i’ve started doing my own nails and always wondered why it would lift. THANK U
Ever since Covid (& having 3 kids now lol, I had 2 back to back that are only 1 and 2 as I'm writing this lol) & a 12 yr old so I could barely afford it anymore but I'm SO GLAD that I came across a polygel video...I've never even tried doing my own nails before and my first set came out better than most SALONS do & the "unicorn chrome" powder I used & rhinestones I put on would have ***EASILY*** cost me around $80 (esp for a full set & not a fill). Whether it was the way they shaped them, the design/color (even though I picked it sometimes u just don't like it once they start doing the design or using that certain color, & I'm just one of those ppl who won't complain lol smh) & I'd notice they were either crooked, lumpy in a spot or two, or they weren't fully painted like from sidewall to sidewall & if I noticed these things I feel like they DEFdid , just didnt care smh) but STILL always tipped good smh. This was so worth it. LITERALLY one of THE BEST investments I've ever made for myself. I'm starting to do my own gel nails at home and have had problems with peeling. This helps so much and once I get better, I'll be able to do my mom's nails too so she can save money ❤️
Omg... I had a nail tech accuse me of “doing something” to my nails because they peeled in one day😵🤨He was so made that I asked him to fix it😕 But he couldn’t tell me what I possibly did to make my nails peel. This video makes me feel that I’m not crazy... thanks
Thanks Tracy this makes sense. I usually use my 180 grit file then go behind it with an orange buffer to smooth out the scratches (i was told to do this so you dont see the scratches under the polish) i havent had a problem with my polish not sticking but i will try it this way to see if i see a difference... thanks again
LOVE these tips Tracy! 💖 I have seen every one of these instances in the salon! Great job Tracy! I recommend this video to anyone using gel 💖 I’d like to add, these tips are absolutely 💯 % essential! But nothing can save you from clients that don’t want what you have to do for their service, ie. an extra base or top coat for flexible nails. In that case I would add an additional tip of client communication! I have definitely had clients try to talk me against what I would recommend for their nails, including a better foundation for their service like extra base coat or a harder enhancement. Techs will run into this, and you have to be clear to your client your recommendation, and that they cannot expect the same results with something you wouldn’t recommend for them! Because, not every client has the same nails, they can’t always get and expect the same results as their friend Sally 🙃
Wow, Ive been making all these mistakes. No wonder why Ive been so fustrated. I actually gave up doing my nails months ago because I was tired of it taking me 3 hours to only have my nails last a couple of days. Ive been interested in gel builder mainly because of its self leveling property but was unsure it was worth giving it another go. Thank you thank you!!!
I just tried to do my first set of dips + gel polish at home for the first time and thank you for this video because I’m not too pleased with the result… but practice makes perfect! I feel like the gel polish just looks thick and messy and I definitely need to practice painting my nails more cleanly. Thank you for this video!!
Great video. I love being able to do gel nails at home. I just learned that I need to clean up my polish on my skin before curing. I usually just pick it off over the next couple of days but I never thought that is starting to lift the polish. I usually have great luck and I’m bored before the polish comes off. At least 2wks. But my last manicure it was peeling within 48 hrs. I think it was my bonding polish or whatever it’s called. The liquid you put on before the base coat or as you said it might be my light. It’s probably 3 years old and I don’t use it much but it might be time for a new one. Anyway great video. I appreciated it. Thanks :)
Omg I think I found my problem. I'm teaching myself nails and I've done about ten polygel dual form sets💙 I work during the day n wash my hands a lot but my nails don't even last a week. I finally think I know my problem. That little bit of gel on my skin, after curing, is make the entire nail lift off by pulling it! Less is always more with nails I'm starting to realize more and more. Gotta make a very thin cuticle area and if there is any polygel that squeezes out, I gotta get it the heck off my surrounding skin before curing.
I double base on my mum and now her gels stay on fir weeks! And Iv fixed her bad nail that wouldn’t grow , now it’s growing just took a few manicures and over time it got better , she hates e files so I had to do it slowly and over a few sessions lol 😂 bit we got there! So I’m proud of myself as we fixed it and now her gels stay on, but 2 coats of base works!
Thank you sm! this was so helpful! I’ve been doing nails for over 3 years now. I recently started getting issues with peeling. I did my research but nothing seemed wrong. After I watched this video I realized I’ve done EVERYTHING that your not supposed to do lol. will DEFINITELY use this in the future. Thank you sm!
Thank you I was having a hard time with bubbles on my gel polish when I practice on my nail tips and now I know I think it’s because I buff them after filing
I just had to replace my lamp! Out of no where i did a black gel manicure and it didn’t cure any of it !! I was so confused... so i started doing research and figured out how to test my lamp and it didn’t cure any dark colors 😭😭😭 tried my new lamp last night and perfect black gel mani !!! Love your advice 🥰🥰
Thank you so much for this information I'm learning to do my own nails and this helped alot I have trouble painting any kind of nail lol the liquid you approve to wipe the artificial nail at the end is what? I couldn't get that part again great advice.
Yep, been there done that too. I do have to say that YN 1-step gel polish is AMAZING! It seems stronger and more long-lasting! I've never been a "fast" nail tech so this has helped in that area too.
I just started myself but haven't got any lifting ir anything. It just that staying in the line and pushing skin back enough that is hard for me I think... good luck to your nail journey!x
Oh my gosh! I finally started using gel dip powder and making my nails pretty for the first time ever-my nails are super thin and always break so it’s been a lifelong “nope can’t have pretty nails” thing. So I’m excited!!! And have been having all these issues, ha…thanks so much for this FABULOUS video! Would you mind letting us know what’s in that bottle you used to clean the mail after you buff it up? So no acetone, no soap, no oil…is it just water??? Thank you SO MUCH!!! I can finally have pretty nails!!
Ok I have never done my nails ever but was invited to a GelMoment group. I decided to look on YT and came across your channel.. I would come to you to get mine done, I think you are down to earth and tell it as it is.. Brilliant for all that information thank you ...
When I was a kid I used to buy polish and didn't understand why some dried goopy and others didn't. Gell wasn't very well labeled. Usually there'd be a wall stand of polish, with a brand name signed above and on the bottles. But the labels below the bottles only had the price and colour name... no mention anywhere of whether it was gell or acrylic. I only realized gell exists, and needed UV to dry, once my town got internet in 2010 and I started watching youtube videos.
Thank you for this! I can't tell you how many videos I've watched that encourage atleast one of these no-no's. I've seen a few that encouraged all of them. The videos were even taught by pros saying it was to teach people the right way to do nails yourself. I appreciate y'all for explaining how to properly do something and why. You made it very easy to understand with your examples. I feel way more comfortable now trying to do my own nails at home. I'm saving this to watch again later. I think this time I can successfully apply a good set of nails that will last. Thank you! 💗💅☺️
Ohhh that’s why It wudnt soak off. I messed my nails up so bad I called it quits until it grew out completely. Ready to get back into it with the proper tools and techniques! Thank you
This was so helpful I work at salon and I had these issue 😭😭 but no one could explain why and I always want to do great so Tracy thanks I will give you a update on how things gose 😃
I go to salons to have gel manicures because I like the way it looks and I want to have a pretty and well done manicure. I don't want something that will sit on my nails for weeks and I certainly might not be back every two weeks to get a new one so I want my nails to look like they looked prior to putting the gel on them. I also have extremely sensitive nails and I hate the feeling of the file on them so I definitely will not let the nail technician do this. So in this respect I don't really see it as a mistake and I don't agree that gel is an enhancement. I see it as a more durable alternative to normal polish. Otherwise, lovely video! xxx
Loved your video. Wish it was longer with more emphasis on what I need to buy for home use. I’m a retired master cosmetologist. Mostly did hair and ran my businesses. But now I’m interested in doing my nails at home. It you lived close by me I would love to let you do my nails because your a great nail tech and a great conversationalist. I hate going to nail salons where they don’t understand me and vice versa. I’m never satisfied because of lack of communication. Sanitation is also my pet peeve. I’m subscribing to your channel. Hope to learn more. Thank you for making videos. Keep it going.
Thank you so much for the video. 🥰🥳😘I have worked at “natural nail salons” only we don’t use drills... a lot of my guest have had experiences with people that don’t know how to use drills properly and therefore messing up their natural nail to the point of trauma... there anyway you can do any videos with nail files on all 10 fingers and then follow thru with the full service? Do you cap the free edge of the nail with Gel ? I am having a problem with doing a gel Service within 50 minutes, and every guest will have their own nail story which can make or break this 50 minute time frame it’s something I am trying to master.
Speed comes with time, don't stress it. We don't stress the capping since we use protein bond, other than for the look. We have full service videos under the category of "Real time"
Thanks for the tips I DID learn something! I WAS though, hoping you'd go over painting close to cuticle and sidewalls Lol... That's where I keep having the worst problems! 🧡🧡🧡
