This is possibly the first time I’ve seen s RU-vid video with a “clickbaity” thumbnail using the arrow to point to something, where that something is actually relevant. Because yes, a band pass filter is the key element to all things Psy. Thank you for not just drawing an arrow pointing at something random

Ive been producing for 20+ years. This is good but actually quite basic. This comment makes me realise just how deep and vast our knowledge as Producers really is. It's all like automatic and second nature at this stage.
@Spiriax
@Spiriax 6 месяцев назад
@@mackcarlo Well... I've been producing for at least 20 years too! I always found that fiddling around with knobs and sliders in synths are usually kind of unintuitive and I don't notice any difference, and when I *do* notice a difference I don't know how it changes the sound so I don't really learn anything from it. So in the end I don't know what I am doing and am stuck using pre-made presets, except for changing some basic effect sliders like reverb, phaser or similar. It feels sad because I have tons of creativity but because I think it's so difficult to use synths to their full potential it just holds me back so much. This is more when it comes to psytrance in general, but another similar problem is I found that bass sound presets for synths always sound like trash so I am stuck using bass samples from sample packs in order to make a bassline that sounds good and modern. One of many reasons I haven't produced a track for 4 years...
@mackcarlo
@mackcarlo 6 месяцев назад
@@Spiriax here’s some advice for Synths. Focus on using the decay, sustain and release knobs on the Filter Envelope section and turn up the Env Amount on that section! If you have the attack set at 0 or instant.. Then turn up the Env Amount to 75% (or 3oclock)… Then play with the decay and have it short… about 10 to 20%… So you don’t over complicate things.. Have just the single OSC Oscillator turned on and use the Saw Wave shape for a Bass. The ADSR on your AMP Envelope section is equally important. You don’t want a long sustain or release on a Bass sound for example! You want an instant 0% attack for them snappy bass sounds. The ADSR on Synths on the Filter section and Amp section are the key to shaping your sound! Making sure you have only a single Osc turned on first and playing with that single sound is also a good place to start! Peace ✌️

Hey, thanks for the video. Quick question: when making the squelch sound, or generally working with band-pass filters and automating them, I notice a distinct jump/stutter when I use an LFO to automate the cut-off. Different resonance values / etc. change where this jump happens, but it's audible enough to sound good. Usually about half-way through the bar. Any suggestions for dealing with this? I tested this with Serum, Vital, and another synth, they all have this problem.

@@Projektor_music Thanks for the reply. Try as I might I can't replicate your first sound. Your saw wave is very clicky. Mine has no clicks at all unless I drop heaps of octaves. I have couple of tips for you.Never increase fat on filter because it gets really loud and hard to eq and in stereo field group of frequencies are fucked up.If you want to fatten the soumd use saturator,distortion and compression.Next thing is fx in serum.Its way better to use fx from external plugins,you can even use stock ones for reverb and delay.Third and by all means most imoprtant part is phasing.Phasing can really fuck up your sound.Phase is set where waveform is cutting with himself.Quality of overall mix depends on phase transpositioning so its better to set phase and rand to zero and play with voices
@profet1385
@profet1385 4 года назад
serum fx are really good though
@Fractal_sol
@Fractal_sol 4 года назад
@@profet1385 Yes ofcourse.I agree.My opinion was based on something totally different
@Projektor_music
@Projektor_music 4 года назад
Hey, The fat knob applies an analogue stile drive to the frequencies around the filter cutoff. I use this button together with resonance to dial in nicer tones around the cutoff frequency! For your second point, I wanted to show how good you can make sounds within serum. Even though I agree external FX are better for the sound, I wanted to keep in mind that some people aren't great producers and that they might find the video too complicated to follow when I start adding too many plugins/effects. Again, you are right in this case, but for the sake of the tutorial it's better to use the internal FX! Your last point, though, is a bit weirder. I assume you're talking about either "phase distortion" or "phase cancellation" which are 2 important but very different terms. Phase Distortion is a term used to describe the effect filters have on the phase of individual harmonics of a signal, while phase cancellation is a term used to describe the effect where 2 signals might lose all or part of it's spectrum content or volume because it's paired with a similar, but out of phase signal. Now for your main point: In the case of these sounds in the video, we are mostly dealing with phase distortion form the huge amount of filtering we do (Remember that steeper filters, which contribute to the psytrance sound, introduce more phase distortion). Therefor setting the phase to a certain value is not going t mean anything because of the phase distortion which is introduced later. Furthermore phase cancellation's effect is much more noticeable on lower frequencies. Finally the delay and reverb introduce another possibility of phase issues, both through their filters and the fact that they preform a time based effect. All together this means that setting a predetermined phase for your sound really doesn't do anything for the sound as there is too much uncertainty in the later processing to really make a difference. Sorry for this long wall of text but I just wanted to clear this up! Cheers!
