I've been composting in Lahore, Pakistan. I bury my scraps and they're mostly composted in three weeks. Must be the atmosphere. Its kinda hot here. I grew up in Pakistan. This kind of attitude of learning, teaching, passion and honesty is what made me really like western people when I was a kid. These people have so much to offer. They have so much value and I'm humbled by them.

That's how i do compost since years. It's a bit slow ( 6-12 month for 80% decomposed, i move the 20% left to the next box), but it work great for the low amount of work. All i do is sometime when i got a leftover of water i drop in it, so it's not too dry, and i mix it a bit when i add a big amount to it.

This year I got a deal where I can load my truck up with the stall rakings of a goat farm. I load up the trucks with my tractor and haul them home where I either compost them or use them as mulch. This stuff is made of thin pine chips, straw and lots of goat manure. No weeds and no known pathogens. But there was a bonus. For years they just dumped this into a ravine adjacent to the property. Here I found a massive MASSIVE heap of very well composted material. I have used truckloads of it in my gardens and the results already are spectacular.

Great stuff... I used a construction demo bag from a big box store (8yd -$39)...put "clean" material (leaves, grass) water from time to time, put in nutrients (horse cubes -alfalfa make great add-in) , kitchen veggie eggs stuff, mix then put in 5 gallon buckets or similar(as many as you can spare) , push materials down tightly and fill to top then leave for 24 hours at least then remix with larger mulch Interesting as you fill the inside of the bag you can also have double the effect by putting it under the bag

We have a little corner in our garden (about 30x60cm) between a high raised bed, an even higher fence and some berry plants. There is no sun and barely any rain getting to that place. Two years ago we started dropping any soft garden scraps like leaves, grass clippings, veggie scraps etc. Never did anything else to it . Today we took it out, siffed it and got 15 liters of great soft compost out of it. Not much for two years but quite good for something that never took any effort.

Nice job, Mark. Tony explains perfectly why people should not be sending yard "waste" to a composting facility. I'm criticized quite often for composting weeds, but rarely have a problem with them coming up in my compost. it's the papaya more than anything that pop up. No problem with that.
@simplifygardening

Once you get above 130˚F weed seeds are destroyed so your doing something right. Push that to 150-160 the papaya will be too

Thank you both for this video. I started my composting last summer, without reading much about it, with a heap of weeds and vine cuttings. That stuff was probably too tough to compost rapidly though. I have a very small garden, about 8'x8', plus a 4'x8' raised bed I built out of steel roofing. Mu compost "bin" is a 5 gal plastic bucket with allot of holes drilled in it. It works pretty good, I turn it with a small shovel. I have been lazy this year, and haven't planted my garden yet, but I dumped the bucket full into the raised bed a couple of months ago so I could start over. Now I see potatoes and some kind of squash or watermelon plants growing. Volunteers! So I guess I did plant after all...

Great video! I agree 100%, if you can compost at home, it’s much better than sending it away. There’s only a few things we put in our local bin service these days because I don’t want it in our compost and it’s primarily things with thorns and kitchen waste but I should change that to separate the kitchen scraps so I send less away.
@philroberts7238
@philroberts7238 2 года назад
Kitchen waste, as you realise, does make great compost - especially when mixed with garden waste. As for thorny things, put them at the bottom of a very slow compost pile - leave it long enough and the thorns will have broken down along with all the rest of it.

Thank you! Yes, there are many others who rate Tony not only on his composting knowledge but gardening in general. And yes, when I was a boy I loved splashing in puddles and it seems like I still do... Cheers :)

Your awesome. Love all your videos. I’m actually building a pallet compost bin today. Been wanting to do one for a while and now that the garden is getting over 2200sqft it’s time. Keep up the good videos. Cheers.

Great vid about composting! Yes, I've been hearing all about the constant deluge of rain you're getting over there! Much less here, so I've still been watering the garden & veggies! Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

My dad puts pre emergent in the lawn each year but I’ve done my research and if your pile is running well, those compounds should be neutralized or completely gone in a few months. In the USA at least, herbicides and pesticides now need to be out of the soil by I believe 6 months tops.

Think about the damage it does in them 6 months though. Pesticides should be avoided like the plague if you can. Tell your dad to feed his lawn some Nettle tea instead
