Catalonia’s case is different from that of Scotland. Scotland has had an independence referendum sanctioned by the UK government. The Spanish government refuses to allow a referendum in Catalonia.
@michaelball93

The UK government is unlikely to let them have another one for a long time. Both main parties in Westminster are strongly opposed.
@ChristiaanHW
@ChristiaanHW 9 месяцев назад
but the situation in the UK has changed drastically since the referendum so Scotland deserves to have another one. in the last one England scared the Scots by saying: Leaving the UK means you leave the EU to and that would hurt Scotland a lot. but now the UK itself has left the EU and pulled Scotland down with them. so because a lot of the votes to stay in the UK were just to stay in the EU, and they aren't in the EU anymore. they deserve another vote for either: - Stay in the UK - Leave the UK, and gain sovereignty over your own country. and be able to make your own choices for your own people. like (re)joining the EU. it's really hypocritical for England to leave the EU because of sovereignty but denying the sovereignty of Scotland in the next sentence

SPAIN: better to have a friend and ally in a neighbor than a hostile occupant of your home..
@JavierGarcia-nm4zr
@JavierGarcia-nm4zr 10 месяцев назад
Wait what? The only hostiles here are the far-right extremists leading Catalonia into an internal civil war. Those populists (mostly the old rural and traditional aristocratic families) only want government positions to gain more and more power, and they find it pretty easy painting Spain as the enemy, focusing on the differences instead of what unites them. Re-writing history, falsifying information and dealing with regimes like Putins Russia (they even agreed to have 10.000 Russian troops in Catalonia to “help” them) or xenophobic like the far right in Belgium is the day to day for them. I truly enjoy Simon channels but on the Catalonian topic they really need a good deep dive into how perverse, anti-European and backwards the Catalonia independence movement is.

As regards the Catalonian question the issue of independence for this area may reawaken the desire of Basques for independence (an issue that goes back decades, and has led to much bloodshed in the past) ... and this may have consequences for France as well. Morally??? 😂. Any repression that occurred in Catalonia in the past was felt by every Spaniard in Spain during the Franco regime. We can’t look to past regimes and say that the Catalans are now victimized (which is the independence faction’s lie to the international community) the current democratic government was approved by all Spaniards through referendum in 1978 and without any promise or guarantee that independence would ever be considered. There is ZERO repression by the national government against Catalans. If anything, there is repression from the regional government against non-Catalans. The 1978 constitution guarantees the sovereignty of the nation and bestows upon the government the absolute right to protect its sovereignty. Independence for Catalonia would be disastrous both economically and politically. Hundreds of major companies and investors (including Caixa Bank) left the region just on a mere possibility of independence that was never realized. The EU has already manifested they would not be permitted within the union after independence. Their claim to North Catalonia (within French borders) would immediately put them at odds with France. It’s never going to happen. There is no historical, legal or moral right to independence for Catalonia and it’s not what the majority want. This is not an occupier vs occupied situation. Catalan independence will never happen nor should it happen.

12:05 there is a misconception about Catalonia independence despite it being a popular idea on the internet on the ground with the actual people isn’t as popular as you think it is. Catalans outside Barcelona are more likely to vote to remain in Spain. The last referendum vote was illegal under the Spanish constitution and technically illegitimate. 12:52 Simon intentionally left out some key details to spin his narrative by all democratic standards for a referendum to succeed you need a majority of 50% + of all the eligible voters only 43% of the actual population voted 89% in favor of 43% is not a majority. The cantalan leaders in the parliament passed that legislation despite not representing the majority of their constituents.

Main problem of west papuan nationality to indonesia are more related to development of infrastructures and economy With massive development that west papua got in last 10 years, the percentage of nationalist west papuan who see them self as indonesian keep increasing. Meanwhile, the number of west papuan that stand against the separatist are also increasing. The day when this video uploaded, thousands of papuan are marching to celebrate indonesian independence. Months ago, papuan in several villages join the military to fight against the rebels. Not only the common citizen, hundreds of rebels also decided to put their gun down and return to become indonesian citizen With many of their member leaving their side to join indonesia, the rebels become more brutal. 2 months ago they shoot death 2 papuan ladies, left their corpse laying on the road side and hide in the nearest bush. They intentionaly killing 2 papuan lady and using their corpse as bait to lure indonesian police. When the police arrive to secure and evacuate the corpse, the rebel appear and shooting at the police, killing one. This is not only intentional murder by the rebel. 11:52 rather than "until Spanish reconquered it" it was "until France decided it was just a burden and handed it back"; the beef Catalonian nobles had with Spain was inherited from the one they had with Aragon, which was that when the last member of uninterrupted patrilineal line of the Count of Barcelona that became King of Aragon by marriage died childless, they had to import an heir and the sway they had lessened by a lot; the peasants, on the other hand, were against the fact that, as a border territory, armies were camping and figting there (which was not fixed with their proclamation). The only lasting effect that came from that was the loss of their privilege of Charter (which allowed them to call for a Court with representants of nobility, the cities and the clergy to accept or veto the king's decisions), along with the loss of that same privilege for Aragon, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, which had nothing to do with the event. 12:51 EDIT: wait, wait, wait, you've been mixing things up here and sold the original referendum with images from the latest one; the first referendum was allowed to proceed with little fuss on the side of the Government; most of the issues with it was that the indepententist parties worked to alienate integrationists and then misrepresented the results: half of the people were intentionally angried to the pint that they decided not to participate, and despite them lowering the voting age to 16 (you tell me how that sounds) to maximize participation among those that grew up with their narrative, that 91% (more like 45%) was not "in favour of independence" but "in favour of it to be regarded as a nation", with the votes in favour of independence being lower (there were two questions on the ballot) ORIGINAL: never forget to mention that it was done without a voter register, it was allowed to vote wherever and there's evidence of people voting multiple times, people from outside voting and vote counts exceeding by large the known number of possible voters in some localities. Not to mention that the referendum was declared unconstitutional for technicalities and the masterminds refused to address those technicalities, complained that the Government didn't want to heard them (after refusing again and again offers from the Government to talk things out), misappropriated a lot of funds that should have gone to things like healthcare or maintenance of public infrastructures, conned a lot of collaborators (many people were hired to work on related tings but never saw a cent of their promised payment) and the higher-ups were too cozy in their exile from the start for it to not have been a long premeditated thing. 14:00 peaceful protest morphed into riots way earlier, and despite the shared videos, those watching live feeds could see that what the protesters directed to the police on standby were not only choice words, nut also stones and sticks (and whatever they could get their hands on).

@jorgelotr3752
@jorgelotr3752 9 месяцев назад
@@garretth8224 in this case, more like the opposite: violence in protests made off camera elicit a violent response by security forces, get the camera rolling, cut and paste the footage and miscaption ambiguous stillframes. Believe it or not, in the last 30 years Spanish police have been trained to put up with a lot of hostility without doing nothing, basically all protests (no matter for what) have a sizeable subset of violent protesters, and protests like this tend to have organized violence on the part of the protesters, which in this case was encouraged by the local government and violent protesters were placed in the first lines to start the powder keg; first stones and big objects, like barriers, are thrown by protesters, then, after a good while, enraged policemen start to trickle until the dam is broken. Has the police such a short fuse as it's sold abroad, we'd have way more issues with police brutality than the US, despite being just 1/18th of the size.

It is a country and nation but locked into a United Kingdom. Cornwall is the better example. It was a nation but was absorbed (much later than many people realise) into England and is now a county. There are those who seek nationhood for it and whilst similar to Scotland it is distinctly different. Sat inbetween is Wales. Wales was considered for years an area of England, completely absorbed after being conquered but it has been slowly trying to reexert itself as a nation. Even now though after gaining a degree of recognition of this it is still very much synchronized with England in terms of laws etc. It is not uncommon to see on many policies or government sites "England and Wales" referred to as one unit. The Welsh nation is slowly reestablishing itself but whilst far more extricated from England than Cornwall is, it still has a long way to go before establishing the same state as Scotland.

Passing mention of Scotland but it wouldn't really count as it is a nation and country but currently locked in a United Kingdom

Scotland has always been a country (well for the last 1000 years) we share a sovereign state but we are a country.

@@rd28gu2 The majority of Scots voted to leave in 2014. It was people born elsewhere in the UK who moved to Scotland, and who voted NO in the referendum. Google: "the majority of Scots voted yes 2014" Also, Scotland voted to stay in a very different UK. They lied to us Scots repeatedly. Told us to vote No, to stay in the EU, that they would block us from rejoining if we became independent. Told us we'd have a stable economy and currency and low energy prices. Told us, we'd get more devolution. And yes, we are locked in because the UK/ England has denied Scotland from holding a fresh referendum, which the majority of Scots voted to have, in 2021. We're literally hostages to Westminster.

Hopefully this won't happend in the Philippines especially the Bangsamoro region, if they want to have independence they will either fight the Armed Forces of the Philippines and remove them in the Philippines or accept Autonomy, apply aswell other regions in the Philippines that wanted to seperate

I lived in Puerto Rico 20 years ago and at the time the pro-independence movement couldn;t garner even 10% of the vote... 90% were evenly split between pero-statehood and retaining commonwealth status.

Nah, they love the handouts from the USA. They don't want to be an independent country, they want to become a US state.
