The map of West Papua is wrong. What you showed us is map of Province of West Papua (one of province in Indonesia). But if you talk about Republic of West Papua, you have to entirely put the west part of Papua Island, which consists of 2 province of Indonesia: Papua and West Papua.

Catalans outside Barcelona are more likely to vote to remain in Spain. The last referendum vote was illegal under the Spanish constitution and technically illegitimate. 12:52 Simon intentionally left out some key details to spin his narrative by all democratic standards for a referendum to succeed you need a majority of 50% + of all the eligible voters only 43% of the actual population voted 89% in favor of 43% is not a majority. The cantalan leaders in the parliament passed that legislation despite not representing the majority of their constituents.

Not counting Bougainville, which is currently on its way to internationally recognized independence, West Papua has the most sympathetic case to make for independence, and Catalonia the least sympathetic.

Missing here was how involved Australia was in f*cking them over and basically handing them to Indonesia (then persecuting whistleblowers…) and turning a blind eye to Indonesian atrocities against the Papuans, in exchange for kickbacks from their (environmentally devastating) mining and other resource-stripping activities.

I think it is more likely for Scotland to leave the UK, than Catalonia leaving Spain.

Btw if you look at the general elections of 2023 you can perfectly see that pro-independence parties won 14 of the 41 seats Catalonia has in Congress against 27 seats of the unionists

West Papua won't be independent....people on the major coastal cities are loyal to Indonesia. Many thousands West Papuans have joined Indonesian armed forces. Those rebels are just fragmented groups in the mountains who terrorizing fellow Papuans who raise Indonesian flag.

Honestly, as a German I get the cultural backgrounds that have been colonised. The Catalonia debate is also fine, but as many have stated, very different. For the sake of a quick comparison, basically every single one of the german subcultures has identified them selves as a unique nation in the past. The stability and wealth of a nation, in some cases, is the stronger argument and I truly believe that it is the same in Catalonia.

At what point can we agree that "on all sides" or "on both sides" has taken on connotations that those phrases didn't have before, and should be avoided? It's unfortunate, but language evolves, and right now these phrases have a very strong association with excusing behavior based on the fallacious assertion that it's ubiquitous.

Simon you forgot to mention the Western Cape leaving the rest of South Africa and forming an independant country which will become the Monaco of Africa if it succeeds. A video about that will be great🙌

There's also a growing movement within the Western Cape province of South Africa for Cape Independence. Many South Africans are fleeing to the Cape as it is the only province in South Africa not ruled by the highly corrupt African National Congress (ANC). It is also home to the highest concentration of white and mixed race South Africans who are currently discriminated against through black economic empowerment laws. They're seeking equal rights for all regardless of race. The movement is growing in popularity but it is slow growth as the region represents a massive almost 50% of South Africa's tax base and the central corrupt government won't give it up without a fight.

The Papua situation makes me wonder how that will be affected by Indonesia's crazy plan to move their capitol to Borneo. So much of what went on in that area is murky & unknown, caught up in other issues.

One theme globally is that the regions with a ton of countries (especially tropical regions) tend to wallow in poverty because these smaller states just don't have the resources to take care of their people.

Could California become its own country in the future?

A better UK example would be Cornwall becoming independent as Scotland is in some ways already its own country.

I hope New Caledonia chooses a new name when they gain independence. Why name it after a place on the other side of the world? Why keep a name given by colonialists? That'd be cool but it is up to the native people.

It's Indonesia's main challenge, all of their different islands have different cultures which developed separately. Papua New Guinea, East Timor and now West Papua. Each of the more remote islands separate from Java, Sumatra and Bali have strong independence movements. One of the main barriers to them becoming a wealthy and prosperous nation.

OK for those who want to split away or break up from countries they're part of, how many referendums or how frequently should they be allowed ? Is it just until they get what they want ?
