Just having a concealed carry weapon on your person is not enough to really be prepared to defend yourself and others. You have to be honest with yourself. It is important to understand these 5 concepts and honestly evaluate yourself in regard to them. (Obviously, there are more than these 5 but I think these are high on the list). Interesting .myself ,husband and 2 sons are all NRA basic pistol Instructors. Our instructor kept saying in the class, It's Not a weapon, it's a firearm. Not a weapon until it's been used as one. You had good points. Biggest one is always be aware of your surroundings. Everyone are always ON their phone. Face in their phone. They don't see or even know what is going on around them..Even if you don't carry, BE AWARE. LEAVE phone in pocket till you've gotten in car, lock doors, then get on your phone. Thanks for Sharing. Yeah, I went through that same Instructor Class just for credibility when helping others learn. To be honest, when they say "Basic" pistol, they mean basic. I would have a hard time taking peoples money to teach them just that curriculum. It's kind of like they crammed a 2 hour class into 2 days ;-)

I agree with pretty much everything you said. Except for the part where you said that your instructor told you that it’s not a weapon but a firearm. That it’s not a weapon until it is used as one. No. It is absolutely a weapon. It’s just a matter of semantics. In that case I could say it’s not a fire alarm because it’s sitting in your holster and not firing and being used as arms. Is an automobile not an automobile just because it’s parked and not mobile? A gun is absolutely a weapon. Weapons can be used for good and weapons can be used for bad. But it doesn’t change what it is. That just sounds like he’s trying to be clever.

@@SurvivalOnPurpose Yes. The NRA Basic Pistol class is 70% a safety class. The other 30% is for firearm fundamentals and shooting introduction. I tell my students, it is like learning to shoot a basketball. When you leave my class you are qualified to shoot free throws at an 8th grade level. While all the fundamentals are the same, getting to be an NBA shooter takes a whole other level of training.

Thanks, Brian. These are prudent points that EVERYONE that thinks about self defense. All training is a bonus. As you stated, the brain is the best, strongest weapon you have. Years ago when I was in martial arts, I was told bt a black belt that I was working with, he said when you practice really hard and throw a punch a thousand times, you've in reality thrown it once. Meaning, practice, practice and practice some more. Regardless of what your intent is, plan and practice for all contingencies. You could be the best , say pistol shot, there are places and times you will not or can not pull your weapon--- what are you going to do then ? Thanks again Brian, great words of wisdom, for someone who listens to what you say, not just hears the words. God bless y'all and stay safe out there in this crazy world .

Excellent advice. You wouldn’t buy a car and keep it for an emergency without learning how to drive safely. The military spent a lot of time teaching me how to handle weapons safely and effectively. A person who buys a gun for self defense needs to go through similar training.

Along with firearms training, I also recommend learning an effective grappling art like Judo.

A training class is a broad brush. It’s better than none. Fighting Pistol at Tactical Response is the gold standard of a baseline defensive pistol course.

You know, I carry guns and knives every day, but if I were to invest and get serious about defense and preparedness, I'd opt for some kind of fighting class, like Judo, jujitsu something along those lines, because a hand-to-hand situation seems way more likely in my opinion:)

these are always variables sometimes u descelate sometimes you hold your pride it all depends what can happen where u are what ishappening life is a game of variables but yes in general avoiding 98% violent encounters is a good idea unless trapped or some1 else is about to get hurt etc...

You hit the nail on the head. Anybody that says that they shouldn’t have to get training to exercise their second amendment right and claim to be a supporter of the second amendment need to actually pay attention to what it says. It says “well regulated“. And if they actually knew what that meant, they would be training as much as they can.

@@papimaximus95 My grandmother at 90 could shoot better than most guys I know that buy a gun and throw it in their sock drawer and never train with it. So maybe those grannies used to shoot with grandpa when he was alive. Training and practice with anything you do in life will make you better and more proficient at it. That’s just a fact. I don’t know how that’s overthinking. That’s just the nature of human performance. Besides. It has to do with our duty. And your comment proves that people scoff at and roll their eyes at a sense of duty these days. Congratulations.

And this comment proves that you are not a civilized person who can maintain a civilized conversation. Of course we overthink things. Look at the ridiculous number of gun "experts" on the internet. Everyone does not need to learn to drive like a Nascar driver or cook like a world-class chef. Competency in many cases is sufficient.

Please define competent instructor. I have found several instructors who disagree on several points. Example: lights on carry guns. I would appreciate your input. Thanks!

Two competent instructors may disagree on topics such as gun lights, red dots or other “non-essential” topics the internet loves to focus on. These things don’t matter if you can’t competently and safely draw your gun and stop the threat. What matters is are they teaching solid fundamentals such as mindset, gun handling, good tactics, etc as they relate to an individual, armed citizen. And whether they have a demonstrated track record of using proven teaching methods and being able to assess what you are doing and make needed corrections and instructions. It’s no secret that I think Tactical Response is a good example of what competent instruction looks like.

You should watch the armed attorneys on why a lot of training should be avoided and will bite you in court.

I often disagree with them. They are focused on staying out of jail. I think it’s more important first to stay out of the morgue. If they don’t think they could argue that training makes you a more responsible single and safer gun owner I wouldn’t want them representing me in a self defense trial. They are also the folks who advised against carrying trauma medical supplies for the same reasons. I don’t know if they really believe everything they say of if they are just going for controversy and clicks.

I think at least part of the issue is that very often you do get what you pay for. as funding is cut, hiring standards are lowered. If you look at the salaries of elected "representatives" inmost major cities, it becomes apparent where the priorities are. I think police need to be paid more, trained better and then absolutely held accountable for their actions.

6. NOT BEEN ABLE TO REACH FOR YOUR GUN WITH BOTH HANDS: Those who carry at 3 o'clock can only reach for their gun with their right hand. If you are right handed, carry apendix or at 4 o'clock, immagine your righ hand is disabled and learn safe and effective way to reach for your gun with your left hand and shoot the threat.

Brian, I cannot agree with you more. Even for those of us who have deep training in the use of our weapons, tactical tracing ..etc. have to re-qualify. Sales of any firearm should have a mandatory three to six month training course AND follow up retraining courses. Before the person is allowed to carry. Bad enough I might get shot by the bad guy let-alone an innocent idiot. Keep pushing the message brother cause we all want to come home alive and well and with no regrets.

As much as I agree that people should be responsible and invest in training, I ABSOLUTELY do not agree with it being a requirement to exercise a basic human right. "Shall not be infringed" means just that. To paraphrase Tom Selleck from his famous exchange with Rosie O'Donnell, the level of freedom we enjoy comes with a certain amount of risk. Freedom and security are opposites, when one increases, the other decreases.
