I discuss 5 less well-known cruise lines that you probably have not heard of, but I think your really should know more about - and consider for a future cruising vacation. These cruise lines are not as well-known as the big lines but offer the cruise travellers something different, which is always something worth looking at.

Hurtigruten is amazing. But it’s not a normal type cruise, stops are only a few hours at most, no entertainment beyond the beautiful coastline and daily talks. Alcohol is VERY expensive due to taxation in case that is important to you (as it was for a fair few non European visitors). It is also actually part of the Norwegian public transport system and people go from stop to stop on board as well as those people on the whole journey. But it’s what you want for the Northern Lights :)

I'm going to have to look more into Hurtigruten. Just from a cursory glance at their pricing, it's quite reasonable for what they are offering. And their solo supplement doesn't make me want to cry like with other small ship lines.

Hello, Gary! I'm an ex pat Brit living in sunny, hot, but NOT humid (for a change!) Texas, and I had definitely never heard of any of these small lines at all. I'm going to do some more research now, and CriosiEurope's more exotic destinations sound particularly intriguing. Thanks for sharing, and well done for coming up with new stuff even though you're landlocked at the moment!

Really interesting video. Celestyal certainly is on our radar, love Greece and they do some excellent itineraries, love the all inclusive aspect too. Paul Gauguin is on our bucket list as you know!

If people really want to get out of town, these choices are probably where you need to look, that is, when air travel returns to get you there to begin with. Small ships, varied itineraries, and you said, among them, all of these lines, know what they are doing and where they are going. And one might consider them because it might be these locations that open up first, before the outer market reopens later on in 2020 and 2021. That all depends though, on the ability to get from point A to point B, without a hassle.

Nice video. I actually have heard of all of these cruise lines except CroisiEurope. I was considering going to the middle east (Israel and Egypt) with Celestyal and I also was thinking seeing the northern lights with Hurtigruten. I did called up Hurtigruten and their customer service is GREAT. They give you more info then you ever wanted to know.

Garry, thanks for the video. We've actually done a Transatlantic on Sea Dreams 1. We'd do another in a heart beat. It was a great trip with great food and a fun guest speaker. Very different I suspect from their Med or Carib cruises, though we did get the cavier and champagne in the surf BBQ as we left the Carib. One of the things you didn't mention about Hurtigruten is that they have a mail contract and those trips up and down the coast are mail and ferry trips. I've been able to watch them pull into a port and disgorge people and cars, then pull away fairly quickly.

Great suggestions Gary. I have heard of them and even checked out prices for myself, but then I am a retired Travel Consultant. i had a 4 day Ponant cruise booked since last year for oct 3, 2020 Vancouver to San Diego, to try them out, but since Canada has banned all cruises till after oct 31st 2020, it is now cancelled. So today I had to cancel my Time Share for after cruise, in California, car rental and return flight. Luckily I had booked flight with Air Canada's frequent Flyer rewards, Aeroplan, so I got all my points back and easy to cancel myself online. Now wondering if my Celebrity Equinox Caribbean 12 day cruise will sail Nov. 27, 2020.

Hello Garry You was right I’d never heard of these companies. Sea Dream looks very very nice. Now that Royal Caribbean has cut Pullmantur loose. Do you think that the German Travel Agent TUI might pick them up? 2 Sovereign Class ships The twin sister of the Galaxy now Explorer And a brand new client list.

Am I supposed to thank you for probably costing me an additional $2500. for a cruise I had never thought of nor heard of before??? I'm doing my homework. I know my wife will say "NO", but then she always does. We will see. Is Celestyal really that good?

The Hurtigruten ships sailing up the Norwegian coast are not really dedicated cruise liners but provide transport, supplies and ferry services to various fairly remote towns along the coast. They do also take cruise passengers, but that is not their sole function. There was an excellent video on Netflix which showed highlights of the full trip along the coast starting from Bergen which was broadcast live on Norwegian TV several years ago. Sadly I think it is presently unavailable.

Well cruise lines have a habit of calling them selves 5 stars or 6 stars but what about the bible of cruising Berlitz Cruising and Cruise ships? There are only 2 x 5 star cruise ships and both owned by Hapag Loyd the Europa and the Europa 2 with 5 stars plus. The best of the lot.

Where to start...Sea Dream, yes sailed them, absolutely fantastic, the story I like to tell is, my wife decided she wanted to read a book under the stars, so she went up to one of the Bali beds, laid down, started reading and of course fell asleep. At day break she woke up to find that the crew had put a comforter over her, somehow managed to sneak a pillow under her head and were standing a few feet away with coffee, juices and morning pastries.... They take service very seriously. Paul Gauguin, before CV19 I would have agreed with Gary, however, the way Ponant has been treating it's guests since the outbreak means at least in my mind they will never see a dollar of my money. I would actually be interested in Gary's take on Ponant/PG refusing to issue refunds, refusing to cancel cruises until the morning of the cruise, and then refusing to issue refunds for that cruise and then, taking new bookings for cruises they had already cancelled and guess what, refusing the refund. After the outbreak they rewrote their COC to state that there will be no refunds only future cruise credits, they then applied that rule to all bookings, even those before the outbreak. I'm sorry, I get the current situation is tough on all companies, but treating your customers who spend $10k-$20k each on a cruise is going to bite you big time in the long run.

It’s such a shame about this virus, I was all booked up to go on silver-sea antarctic cruise from ushuaia In November I dunno if I should cancel or not..... silver sea have made NO mention of if they are still going or if any new measures are taking place. It’s like the virus never hit.

My communication from Silversea in May ( yes I am a travel agent ) states that they are doing the Cruise With Confidence thing like Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are. Find a travel agent near you and get the full particulars about how it works. It’s too hard to explain here and it’s not fair of me to hijack Gary’s excellent video.

Celestyal is terribly limited so I personally cannot comprehend your recommendation. It is the most limited cruises line. You have almost the most experience in the world yet you suggest them. Unbelievable.

@@heatherjones6647 No. Their number of destinations. If you are a fan of Greek Islands cruising then you are fine.

@@cliffnorman178 but that is precisely what Gary said, that they do the Greek Islands. They certainly fill a niche, as most other cruise lines might stop in one or 2 islands and that is it. They do not concentrate on just the Greek islands like Celestyal does.
