I recommend reading Mojo Workin’ By Katrina hazard Donald It really breaks down the History. That book you got is okay but it missing some vital information. It’s barely scratching the surface. As a Hoodoo practitioner I don’t recommend many books but I definitely recommend Mojo Workin’. You should also learn more about Ancestor veneration and protection before practicing anything in that book you got.

I love Tayanna’s work. I read “Root work” a couple of years ago and it’s definitely a recommendation. For those of you who consider using tarot, I will say please keep in mind that the hoodoo tarot has hoodoo layered on top of the tarot. What do I mean by that? Tarot is a system on it’s own (78 cards with 78 archetypes) that in itself has nothing to do with hoodoo. And it takes time to learn that system. Now Tayanna has used her knowledge of Tarot and hoodoo and put hoodoo on top of the tarot system. Which in itself is beautiful and genius, but might be a little too much for someone who neither has knowledge of tarot nor hoodoo and might lead to giving up learning/ using the cards. So if you are a tarot beginner and you want to use a deck created by a black American you might enjoy these beginner friendly decks: - the melanated classic by oubria. You can purchase that deck on oubria’s website www.oubria.com/melanated-classic-tarot.html or - the mahogany Tarot by Kasheera Hickson. You can purchase that deck on her website mahoganytarot.com Luckily nowadays there is a variety of beautiful decks created by black Americans. I myself love the Kaleidadope Tarot by Krystal Banner (who has created several decks), but while the Kaleidadope tarot relies heavily on the “classic” Rider Waite Smith Tarot, Krystal gave the cards a very stripped down, minimalist spin (you can purchased Krystal’s decks on her website www.krystalbanner.com/project ). So while the Kaleidadope tarot is still easily accessible for beginners, it’s not as beginner friendly as the other two I mentioned. At the end of the day all you need to start is one deck. For those of you who are curious about what decks created by black creators are available on the market, you might want to check out sparkle divine’s channel here on RU-vid and on Instagram. She just recently asked her followers to name decks by black creators for a video she has planned.
