Joe, get a Lodge Lid Stand, you can set the pot on it to put coals under it or use the lid for a skillet. Also, get a trivet for keeping your meat off the bottom so it dont burn. Also get a lid lifter for removing the lid. Your wife may commandeer that for the kitchen... Also, treat both the pot and lid both inside and outside. Heat it till it smokes a little. Jerry

Glad I found the channel, very fun, informative and entertaining all around. You will probably need to season your dutch oven more than once, but over time it will develop a fantastic carbon layer. You can also use the upside down lid for frying. Recommend you get some type of trivet for the bottom (mine is a split ring of cast iron scrap). It enabled you to bake in the oven convection style-heat travels all around the food like a true oven, with a small pan you can bake anything that will fit in it-bread, sweets or anything you don't want gumming up the bottom 😊. Enjoy and keep experimenting.

You are the first bushcrafter I stumbled across on RU-vid four years ago. Because of you I started having more fun and doing new things and buying gadgets and stuff! I started a channel just for fun, but I don't have any survival skills or much knowledge of other stuff.

I was thinking maybe use the brown and tan tarps ( same size) as walls then use the larger green tarp as the top and you have fewer gaps plus some extra overhang. Just sayin. Liking the show.

Joe, partridge much prefer yellow birch and poplar trees with pine stands for cover. They dont favor open areas. Spruce grouse just like thick pine/spruce stands. Usually when they flush they dont go far but they are the masters of blending in. Theyll sit dead still untill you give up. Ive been dooped by grouse hundreds of times but its all part of it. Good stuff.

Sausages, sliced up, taters, onions and jalapeños (or any peppers) ....it will get a lil chared...and some freeze dried Sriracha ....best camp, Dutch over recipe ever....and biscuits, fresh biscuits, especially with the proper style style Dutch oven you have. And all the camp stews

Good job seasoning the cast iron. Very important to oil it up after every washing. Keep it oiled. If you dont, it will crack. You can cook anything and everything in that pot and it will turn out great. Nice time in the woods by a beautiful lake. Camping is my favorite thing to do. Nice bird you shot, cleaned and cooked up. Good eatin'. Wolfie seemed to be just loving this camping trip. He's on to it now. Nice tarp shelter and very versatile. Good times.

The right Dutch oven is just a wonderful thing. Wait until you start making deep dish sourdough pizza or fruit cobbler in your camp fire! Its no longer roughing it at that point.

My grandpa used to take me fishing. He wrapped chicken onions etc in tin foil. Put in a clay tile and filled ends with mud. Layed in the fire. Baked while we fished. It works for fish too. Baked in its own juice. Good.and tender. I keep 2 heavy duty ponchos in boat. They have snaps and tie downs on corners with hood.s. big enough to tie together and make a shelter. Great for sitting down also cover knees And keep feet dry . Wind break in boat. Cover seat and all. Have had for years. Put hot coals on over lid. That's the idea. Bake in it. Dutch oven. Charcoal on lid. Or coals.

Hey Joe just a little idea I had just like you said you want to keep the frame work and take the tarp. Why not just burry the bucket with the tarps in them so they are always there and you can use the bucket for extra storage as well I’m sure the tarps don’t only fit

Joe, that lip on the lid of the Dutch oven is so you can pile coals on top of it to let you bake in the pot. They are so versitile. Cowboy Kent Rawlins is a great resource for that type of cooking. He's an old cookie that traveled on cattle drives.

Adding eyes to the stove... You trying to get a reaction from Doug?! LOL!! Yeah, a dutch over is the bomb - pretty much ANYTHING can be cooked in one. You won't regret that purchase! Had to chuckle when Wolf immediately obeyed the command when Bacon was on the line! HA!!

One of my lifetime memories is at the Deer Lease (Huntsville, TX) camping in a plastic bag shack, waking from time to time bc lack of O2, walking to the stand returning about 10 to Vic cooking 2#s of bacon, poaching bacon & bread in grease prior to cleaning any kill that morning or late the day before. Wonderful time, good men from all walks and campfire bitches.
