'Don't let perfect form inhibit you from landing your shots.' That right there, should get mentioned more by coaches imo

@@Keiran-qr2ty yea man cmon now that’s kinda rude. homie wasn’t scared of throwing. He was trying to throw *P e r f e c t l y* and as such passed up on a lot of “imperfect” shots even tho he now knows probably would have landed and done something even if a little as opposed to waiting for that perfect moment and getting nothing if it doesn’t come. it’s great to be a stickler for form but sometimes ya just gotta thump on somebody

I've been shadowboxing in front of a mirror for about 4 months now through quarantine, while watching your videos on the jab. With the science and physics behind the jab, I've been learning and constantly adding to the technique (trying to make it the best punch I have.) Practicing today in my fifth 1-minute session, I tried a different approach: Doing all the things my body should do with a jab, except throwing the actual jab. And it seemed to help me understand how I've developed a little. I notice from the footwork set-up, building a stance (posting on back foot), small jab-step forward/exhale, slight hip, body, shoulder rotation/slight lean forward, back hand moving to block a lead hook/counter and adding a little more to the rotation...the jab ends up feeling like it wants to come out by itself. Is that the right order of steps to deliver a jab, and are those steps the reason why it naturally wants to come out?
@Lone_Wolf_91

The last sentence were something I trying to go thru with my way of training. Lear the fundamentals, proper technics, but if You feel something may be good try it out, experience your body by not letting your coach to strip You, your way of being a fighter👊 But always respect the fundamentals👊

Hey Shane, how does one throw a jab to the body in Muay Thai? Some say one has to "level down" a bit before throwing it but wouldn't that leave you open to head kicks? Others say that you just have to throw downwards from an MT stance but wouldn't that leave you open to kicks as well? Or are both correct and its just a matter of personal preference of which one to do?
@christophermclaughlin4180

One simply does not throw a jab to the body in Muay Thai!
@qqqualitymusicproductions7957
@qqqualitymusicproductions7957 5 лет назад
Best option is when they throw a roundhouse kick that's your opening to do a quick jab to the body, because as Muay Thai fights transition towards a roundhouse kick it takes a good 1 sec to see the transition of the left leg for a set up. BUT!!! They'll probably see through you and bring your head down and knee you.

Nah, there IS a difference between the up-jab and the Flicker jab, they are similar as are the rest of the jabs family. The up-jab is supposed come from out of the opponents field of vision - from below. The flicker jab is more of just a disrupting rhythm kind of jab, it has way less power but more speed and doesn't come up from under the opponents field of vision like the up-jab - it can come from a textbook boxing stance with the Hands Up. The up-jab is more of a defensive deceptive move because it's supposed to make you look "Open".
@jamesmiles5662
@jamesmiles5662 5 лет назад
The up jab is by far the best jab,it’s disguised from the hip got to be followed instantly with cross or back hand hook,flicker jab is less powerful and more when your in philly shell or leaning back trying to get someone to attack you,basically a backfist,Bruce lee vertical punch is most powerful,

My only experience with Boxing is when the basics were taught to me back when I trained Taekwondo, but it was run more like a kickboxing-influenced class in a way, so they taught more than just the standard fare. (They taught forms, but fused Boxing-style punches and footwork in with the kicks of Taekwondo when it came to sparring.) I say this so it is known that Boxing is not my wheelhouse past how it can be used with other styles. Of the martial arts I've practiced, Boxing is not one in which I am fully trained or experienced, although it does heavily influence how I fight and train. As someone who isn't a proper Boxer, I usually use a probing jab while in the Philly-Shell stance because it keeps me guarded while I'm still maintaining distance before I start throwing a harder jab once I feel I have my opponent's own methods pegged or I find a good opening where a hard jab or some other serious punch is effective. My primary experience is in grappling (Judo and Combat Hapkido being my base in that regard) so I've always been most comfortable getting in close, even when I am throwing punches, elbows, or other hand strikes depending on the scenario at hand. I find it to be something that works for me in order to gauge my opponent, look for those openings, defend their punches, and counter once I'm in a good range to do so, which for me is usually pretty close. I like to try to create openings on my opponent's body so I can attack areas like the ribs, solar plexus, etc. and then make my way up so to speak. I don't grapple or kick nearly as much as I used to before a serious back injury caused me to deal with chronic pain to this day, but I've noticed my grappling instincts seem to appear in how I strike, and so far this has been an advantage in sparring and even when I have had to defend myself in an actual fight, which thankfully the latter doesn't happen that much anymore. I bring all of this up because I would love to hear back from anyone who has ideas on new things to try that would prove effective to add to my methods, an example of which I feel my previous statements in this comment describe. I would also like to know if my Philly-Shell/Jab combination could be improved. I would also love to see a video on using different guards with certain types of punches/elbows/hand strikes in conjunction if such a video doesn't exist already on this channel. I hope that anyone who takes the time to give me some tips on how I can improve is doing great and I want to thank you in advance for your time and expertise.

New to your channel. I can see what you are knowledgeable but I may just have a different way of learning. #3 I would also mention the reason why its "upside down" is because the palms are up in supination. Which I like to describe as "holding a bowl of soup". The confusion between an uppercut and corkscrew is that they are both palm up, but differ where the power comes from

What about the Ali Jab that he used when he threw his hips back and extend his arm to get that little bit of extra reach

I’ve started using long guard in Muay Thai over my orthodox stance but now I’m struggling to incorporate the jab to set up kicks, which was a key reason for using a boxing oriented guard originally.

What about the Mexican jab? GGG uses it a lot where you don't turn your fist over and you throw it straight down the middle so you can split the guard easier?

Nice one! For number 2 - what's the difference between that jab and a hook? The body movement / rotation during the hook that you dont use in a jab?

Jab: straight simple hit towards body area Hook: hip and elbow (tricep) rotation towards side of body.

Dam that's fun, and me too I'm starting it out either in the backyard or my room. If you want the bare necessities I would have to say, perfect size (gloves) for your preference of fighting styles. Heavy bag (punching bag), mouth guard, and shin pads.
