Very useful video considering hay is so important in a bunny diet!

I've tried mixing it with pellets or fruits but they just dug it up to get the fruits or pellets and throw away the hay all the place.. I've also tried to pile a bunch of hay on the floor but again they just step and pee on it.. Also the hay racks, they just dug it out and left it tho I change it regularly to keep it fresh..help mee😅

I fed Oxbow (the Bulk 50lb boxes) For awhile but switched to SPS because Oxbow's was always 1st cut stuff and Storm and Misty where only eating the heads and wasting alllllllll the rest -_- So even though SPS is more expensive I have saved money because they eat all of it xD

do rabbits eventually like timothy hay as they grow up? my rabbit is young and doesn't seem interested in timothy. ive been giving him alfalfa
@shalee5910
@shalee5910 7 лет назад
tony tran You can change your hay when they grow to an adult. Alfafa hay is unhealthy for your adult rabbit. It has too much calcium and can make their pee milky, and can even lead to kidney stones. Alfafa is more suitable for pregnant, breastfeeding, and young rabbits. But u can still give them little amounts of alfafa hay. Hope this helps 😁

@AMpufnstuf
@AMpufnstuf 3 года назад
3 years late but slowly mixing hays (this works with pellets too) is not only more likely to work, but less likely to cause GI stasis or an angry rabbit. also most claims about alfalfa being dangerous are unfounded by any science, though most prefer to feed unlimited timothy or orchard hay, and then feed an alfalfa pellet you can limit/increase if you see the rabbits ribs or spine, or if they become overweight etc. it's better to be strict about pellets and do unlimited hay than to ever try the reverse
@jilliandoeseverything8110
@jilliandoeseverything8110 3 года назад
If you feed only alfafa it is not good for your bunny but a little is ok also feed more timothy,meadow,orchard,oat hay or brome unlimited

I just wanted to thank you! I have the sweetest bunny but this stubborn little girl suddenly decided she didn't want to eat hay anymore. We tried four different brands/types and still nothing, she just throws it around. I put some in a toilet paper roll like you showed and she IMMEDIATELY started playing with it and eating it. I'm so so happy she's eating it again. Thank you!

My rabbit didn't eat few days ago. No vet available at this moment due to lockdown. So we're so worried. He had GI Stasis because he doesn't eat and poops. Good thing i watched some ideas on how to treat GI Stasis, i gave him dextrose powder mixed in water. This is his 2nd dat using dextrose water and i'm very happy that he return eating, i also gave him a little amount of pineapple juice and massage his belly. Thanks God that he's eating now and starting to poop again. First time using Hay, he doesn't want hay. So everynight and day i monitor him if he's eating even though i'm pregnant haha.

Hi.. my lionhead rabbit is a 2 month old baby. I took her to the Vet on Thursday morning because I noticed that she hasn’t pooped during the night and she also lost her appetite. She normally would nibble on her hay rack. She’s diagnosed with GI Stasis, and i hardly force feed her with Critical Care. She’s also under antibiotics and some pain relief meds for the gas as prescribed. She passed runny poop on Saturday ( that’s her first poop after being diagnosed with stasis, and quite smelly). Your bunny’s poop got back to normal right away after having stasis? Please let me know because i have so many concerns about my bun. She still has no appetite unless i offer her some lettuce and celery. She barely drinks water as well, i just trick her by deeping veggies onto the water before feeding her or sometimes thru syringe.

hi i have a rabbit that is 9 years old. he never liked to eat hay a lot and now that he's starting to get older the vet found out that his molars are a little bit too long...(so offcourse it will be better if he eats more hay!) in those 9 years i tried EVERYTHING possible (and a lot of different hays available there in Italy... with flowers, with herbs...). i was thinking about spraying the hay with some fruit juice (all natural without added sugar) to make it extra tasty... (he doesn't have any weight problem so extra fruit is not a problem) do you think that's a good idea? i want him to eat his hay :( ps sorry for my bad english but it's not my first language :P

A 10 lb box of Small Pet Select Timothy Hay (2nd cutting) is $26.99 and a 9 lb bag of Oxbow Timothy Hay is 22.10 (at the moment) on Chewy with Auto Ship, so in the end you're paying a little more for SPS! About $2.70 per pound vs $2.45 per pound. The quality of hay is in both brands is great, but SPS isn't too bad, price wise, in the scheme of things!

I had a scare with my adopted rabbit where she ran out of the hay she came with and I got her some generic timothy. She refused to eat it. I got her a prairie mix, she didn't like it either. I got her oat hay: nope. I took her to the vet because she ended up not eating anything for a day. The lack of hay was giving her digestion pain. Finally, I went and got a bag of the brand she came with. Bingo! She was eating hay again. She still doesn't really like it but she is actively eating it each day now. I also got a sweet smelling sea grass basket to put it in and I also stuff some inside various toys which she actually prefers. Finally, the company that packs the hay she likes also makes a Foraging treat made of herbs and dried vegetables meant to sprinkle lightly on top of food or hay. She LOVES it. I use very little but it makes her nose through her hay and eat more of it. These are all good tips and legitimately work. Ty so much!

Also I would strongly encourage you to bring your bunny inside. It is much safer for rabbits to be indoors and they have longer life spans. It will also help you keep an eye on him while he's not doing well.

Is it alright to feed rabbits hay from your local farm? I live very close to a small farm and they sell all types of hay and i just get Timothy hay to feed to my rabbits. I was not sure if its the best type to give to them, but they both really enjoy it.

+Cali Myers Yes it's perfectly fine! I used to feed hay from a local farm also until I moved to an area where hay is hard to find! Just be sure to get grass hay and not have to much alfalfa or clover in it.

My rabbit is almost 8 months, were you saying Timothy hay is fine? What about pellets? Is Timothy a good choice and is it healthy for them especially my rabbit who is almost 8 months?

+Julianna Tube Rabbits are considered adults at 6mo of age. So your rabbit should definitely be getting Timothy. :)

I have tried ALL oxbow hay (trust me, every kind) and ALL small pet select. nothing He show any interest in hay only alfalfa. strange??? Ive tried mixing and he digs out the alfalfa. No interest in toys... he is strange but happy does binkys and flops. He also gets the zoomies. He is very happy. Gets 1/4 cup of pellets and and fresh veggies.

My rabbit just doesn't want to eat hay! I tried so many types I could possibly find but the only kind of herbs/hay he eats is what my mom trims from her garden. He only likes freshly cut hay *facepalm* Now I use the non eaten hay as litter cover...

Haha help I'm having the same problem! I've tried every hay brand in the UK but my little bun just won't have it. He hates the cheap stuff, he hates the fresh stuff, he likes the middle ground stuff but literally you find one good brand and then their stock changes and he decides he's not going to have that bale of hay!! I've probably wasted at least £100 on hay on him that he's not eaten!! I use most of it as litter cover now because I just can't justify. lol

So i’m not sure what’s available where you live but I recently had a similar problem! My rabbit is really picky, she’ll get bored of her current hay really quickly or decide she doesn’t like it any more. So at my local pet store, Oxbow was selling small 15oz bags for about $5 each. I purchased one of each of the types (Oat hay, western timothy, alfalfa, orchard grass, and botanical). It was surprisingly cheap! I told myself I would let her try the oat hay, western timothy and orchard grass mixed together and I sprinkled some botanical and alfalfa on top! She loved foraging through the hay to find the different sweetnesses and textures and smells, and I found that my rabbit liked a mix of a few hats rather than one specific hay! I would recommend a mixture of a few types of hay if that’s available and affordable for you, as long as you make sure the hays your mixing together is appropriate for your rabbits age! Hope this helps! ✨

any tips on getting a rabbit to gain weight? he eats a good amount of hay and around 3/4 a cup of Burgess excel pellets but never seems to gain weight :(
@101rabbits
@101rabbits 8 лет назад
+tina c How much does your rabbit currently weigh and what breed is he? 3/4 cup of pellets is an awful lot of pellets for a rabbit! If he isn't gaining weight by eating that I honestly think he needs to be seen by a vet. How old is he?
@cupcake5309
@cupcake5309 8 лет назад
+101rabbits I'm not sure how much he weighs but you can feel his little hip bones :( he's around 7 and not sure on the bread since he's a rescue but he's long haired, possibly a mix breed I've asked the vet but living in ireland there's very few vets that will even treat a rabbit or that know much about them! I'm not sure if it's just because he's so old I got him around 6 years ago and he was extremly underweight as he was abused but he gained all the weight and in the past year he seems to eat more but weigh less and I've called vets in my area and they won't even examen him they just say its because he's old but I feel bad that I know he's quite skinny
@101rabbits
@101rabbits 8 лет назад
+tina c Hmm. That's really tough about the vet situation. As for how thin he is, it's ok to feel their bones, and actually healthy! If you couldn't feel them he would be obese! If you'd like, you could DM me on my Instagram @official101rabbits and show me a picture of him. I could try to help you more there.

My boyfriend spoiled my rabbit by giving him a lot of pellets and other good rabbit food, so now when I came home I am trying to get him eat hey but he just wont eat it as he eat before. When he was kid he eat a lot of hey, maybe he eat little because he grow old? i saw last time him 8 mounts ago, because I am traveling around the world hitchhiking, so I am not sure is he eat littlebeat now because he is spoiled or because he is older. What is normal amount for 1 year old rabbit to eat?

adopted a one year old rabbit; he will NOT eat timothy/alfalfa (recommended by vet) HAY. He will not touch ANY of the veggies = cilantro, parsley, green pepper, kale, romaine lettuce, mint, cucumber, and the list down. He will only eat his pellets and fruit, which I know is considered a treat. He will also eat oats, again, a treat. When I took him to the vet I was supposed to 'force feed' . This is crazy! Had a rabbit for 10 years and this guy is driving me bonkers!!
