The limitations of no budget and the pandemic gave me the confidence to try making a music video for the first time recently. I just filmed my self dancing at work, cut in shots of the equipment I work with and stuck some cool filters over the top. It was a lot of fun to make, turned out well, and has inspired me to try making more videos and visual content for my music.

This is hands down the best music marketing channel I've seen on RU-vid. Thank you for all that you do Jesse. What do you think about releasing a song every 4 weeks with the constant sustained strategy model instead of every 6-8 weeks? Would it make it more or less effective?
@Musformation
@Musformation 4 года назад
I think that can be good for momentum but for the songs with a lot of potential that can be too fast
@alexxartificial

@@Musformation do you think a new song every two or three weeks using a staggered schedule that uploads something every week is too fast at first?

I was making some panel/exciter speakers (really great BTW) and had some leftover polystyrene sheets, the stuff with the Pink Panther logo. I simply painted some with green-screen paint. They don't wrinkle, they're light enough to hang anywhere, and I had the further bright idea to paint the backsides with either reflective white or flat black.

Started following your idea on a single every 6 weeks and I was stumped about making videos for it. So I just started filming with my phone and chopping it up on shotcut. This gave me hella ideas 🙌🏽

Made one on the Vegas strip DIY style to my song Ray Gun. Shot myself with a Canon and a tripod. I kind of just bought into that as the theme. I think it shows a different side, and for me personally, I love it because I had a blast shooting it

Just got my first car at 17, first thing I did yesterday was film a music video with my broski. We got creative and just shot around the car, on top of it, laying on the cement and close up, inside the car, etc. I decided to put a camcorder type border plus a tiny bit of an old TV filter on to make up for the halfway decent camera quality and lighting, in other words to creatively "play off" the budget we had. We didn't have much to work with. The important part was that it was funny as fuck and conveyed just the message the song was giving, and matched the energy perfectly. Yeah no shit I'd love to have some money to work with but that's not gonna fuckin' stop me.

You ask to let you know if you have missed anything, so I'm just presenting my amateur case here. Where I go wrong is probably you didn't intend for his to be a how it's "Easy To Make", so my questions are my own mistakes in thinking this is an "easy to make tutorial" and it's not intended to be that. You are very informative and give good examples of clips from successful videos but not how they did it. There's the first musician 1:50 Lil Peep who bought a green screen tarp from Amazon and made videos simply acting out his songs, but not how to do it, how it's easy. At 2:28 there is the "Get Crazy In Your Own Home" There is Kitty and clips of their surreal special effects shots of themselves as examples of what you can do but not how it's done in someone's home on a low budget. Also nice clips of Passion Pit with a lot of creative scenarios to tell the story of their song but not how they did it. There is also People Love Fire and that burning flames have a universal appeal and probably a green screen used but not how they did it. Then there is Split Screen Performance that's a super easy way to make a video fans will enjoy, but again, not how it's done or how it's easy. Real Live Visuals is an example of Bob Dylan that's fun for your audience, but not how. Last is to use a green screen and do something fun with it fans will enjoy and that's the end. So it's not the why or how it's easy to make that's your intention here that lacks for me, but also so great you are creating videos for the masses of musicians trying to make it in the music world, a magnanimous deed!

I do lyric videos only and Ive done one music video. My music does better wirh lyric videos than my music video did but I got a really and I mean REALLY good song I've had on the backburner since the beginning of the year. I want to do it justice with a good video and not just a lyric video. Will deff take notes from this.

Hi Jesse, another tip I would add here is using free stock footage and public domain footage. Sites like videvo, pexels and pixabay and most of all prelinger archives. I made a few really cool videos that way and really add another dimension to my music with zero budget and gear. Only editing software. Wonder what you think about this idea? Also , do you think Spotify canvas have an impact, I don`t think I heard you mention it anywhere? Keep up the good work!

I think the biggest issue with making music videos is that it is an entirely different art form. If you don't know anyone who has decent knowledge of cinematography means you have to try and fail on your own. Hiring someone to shoot and edit a video is expensive as well. What's your suggestion on an artist finding someone who can help with the visual side of things? Or inspiration on how to not care how "pro" it looks?
@Musformation
@Musformation 3 года назад
Honestly the try and fail is sone of it. A few hours of tutorials on RU-vid and sone thought and you’re there. So many people are DIY great videos with an iPhone and the filmic app and free davinci resolve software it just takes a little education and experimenting
@seanmichaelpatten3930
@seanmichaelpatten3930 3 года назад
@@Musformation Thank you. I gotta say your marketing stuff feels a whole lot better than most RU-vidrs. I think there's a better honesty, there's inspiration to not have to be "very online" and still find success.

@@Musformation In your newer videos you sound like the Moviefone guy, and it gets fatiguing to the point where it makes me listen to less of your videos than I would otherwise. I'm not saying this with hatred, that's just honestly what it sounds like to me. Your tips are helpful and I appreciate your focus on organic growth and not just throwing money at ads.

@christopherharv sorry moviefone is not a thing where I live? Are you talking about how fast I speak, the way I speak?
@christopherharv
@christopherharv 6 месяцев назад
@@Musformation Do a youtube search for "Meeting Mr. Moviefone". He was big in the 90s. In this video we're commenting on your voice is a lot more natural and easy to listen to, in the newer ones you're performing your voice and exaggerating it (at least that's how it sounds to me). Other youtubers do this too, so you're not alone.

Thief famously produced that video for under $3k and it probably made them a few million so I stand by what I said 😎
@idespisegravity
@idespisegravity Год назад
@@Musformation I understand that, and it's a perfectly valid point that I'm not debating at all. But surely you see the humor in the idea that someone having 8 treadmills in their home is low budget? Hahah, I mean, I get that they were very likely on loan (because there's virtually no way that budget would be possible otherwise), but the very, very vast majority of people can't just go grab 8 treadmills for a music video 😛 Again, I completely understand the spirit of the idea and appreciate the video. That was just a really funny idea. 🙂
@Musformation
@Musformation Год назад
I actually think it’s a good teachable lesson that what so many great videos have in common is you think of a wild idea and you say to a friend of a friend who owns a gym “could I pay you $2 to borrow all your spare treadmills for a day”. Most great music videos I’ve been a part of have been about being resourceful with really crazy ideas
