Thank you so much for sharing your ideas with us! I have been teaching for 30 years & every time I watch you I am reminded how much there is to learn still! Your work helps me continue to learn!

My district adopted Benchmark 2022 this past school year. After listening to your video, I feel better about some of the pieces included in Benchmark. We are using your vocab strategies as well as read aloud tips. We do a lot of dictation and encoding (although, admittedly, we added more than the curriculum gave). The curriculum does include some spiral review but could be better. I feel like we are on the right track! Thank you!

WOW! This is so wonderful. Like I said, vocabulary is something that I need to focus on too. I used Saxon Phonics for many many years and now some of those activities seem to have new names,,,like the 3 part drill. I have to tell you that I joined the Teacher Summit because you sent me a link so I did pay the the whole price but I have learned so much and have downloaded so many things. I have taught first grade for almost 31 or my 34 years (in October). I am trying to learn brand new things, brand new ways of teaching things and making slides for daily use has been a challenge. I'm just now there YET! I have used your stuff so often you have a folder on my desk top so I can find the new things easily. My students loved the Cat vs Dog writing. Thank you for sharing, for helping new and old alike continue to strive to do what is best for students.

Hi Susan- Thanks so much for this great video. I have been using UFLI & it does a great job implementing the 3 part drill! Could you explain a bit more about using that little plastic screen the kids use during the auditory practice. I'd like to use more tactile practice. Thanks!!!
@HappilyOrganizedChaos
@HappilyOrganizedChaos Месяц назад
She's talked about the screens in previous videos. It is just a 8.5x11 sheet of plastic mesh for embroidery or needle point. We also use UFLI and it does do an excellent job of the 3 part drill! I think a lot of these fun, tactile items would work great for small group but for large group it would just cut into that important instructional time.
@SusanJonesTeaching
@SusanJonesTeaching Месяц назад
Yes! I love that UFLI includes that - one of the literacy programs we are looking to adopt also includes a solid 3-part drill which I am excited about. During the auditory drill, I will often have students simply skywrite the sound I say "spell sh, spell ch, spell a, etc." but sometimes I will have them take out their screen and form the letter on the screen as well! Sometimes we just use our finger and make the letter on the screen and other times I will have them put the screen under a piece of paper and form the letters with a crayon so I can see them easily. Then they trace them. I usually do this (and sometimes sand trays) on a "fun Friday." The crayons and paper don't take too much time, but the sand can take some more time so you'll want to be careful with instructional time!
@SusanJonesTeaching
@SusanJonesTeaching Месяц назад
@@HappilyOrganizedChaos Yes exactly my thoughts about instructional time! I usually just have students skywrite or use their finger on the bumpy board to make the letter, but sometimes we will use the crayons like I shared in the video or sand trays on especially "fun Fridays"!

Thank you for always sharing strategies and tips to help ALL teachers take away ideas to make our selves better teachers which helps our students grow even more. I already do the 3 part drill but didn't know the title for it. My district uses ECRI which does a good job with structured routines and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics blending and does incorporate dictation BUT I hope to include more dictation through out my week. I love the idea of bringing it into small groups and differentiating so my all kids get what they need. I feel like I concentrate so much on my struggling students and don't give my students who are ready for a challenge enough. I am going to work on Vocabulary (picking more words each week) as well as comprehension with planned read alouds. I love the sticky note idea on the book or on the page. I can't wait to try the mentor sentence and do the sentence scramble activity. I think this will really help with skills like capitalization at the beginning and punctuation at the end (why do kids not use those skills but they KNOW them? ha ha) Thank you Thank You Thank you. I will have 2 new team members this year and I have already been sending them some of your videos to start thinking about what first grade will be like and really need. Thanks for always sharing. You8 make such a difference and probably are NOT told ENOUGH!

I like the word a Day books by Evan-Moor. Each day you have a word with discussion. We would put a sticker on a chart when we heard it being used or found it in a book. It has a little quiz for each week too.

I adore your content and systems and have been following you throughout your time on RU-vid! I am in kindergarten this year and while SO much of your work still transfers beautifully, I wondered if you had suggestions of a kindergarten teacher to follow alongside you and your work. I use many of your games and resources for my centers and small groups, but I’m aching to watch other inspirational kinder teachers and what their day in the life looks like as far as the flow for younger kids. I’m finding incoming Kinders to be SO very young 😅 and needing ideas!

I have been teaching first grade for 23 years now. 😂. I love all these ideas, but I would find it difficult to incorporate into my inner city, low income classroom with 32 students and no help, with a bunch of my first graders already having an IEP. Plus, my district has so much testing, we rarely have time to do these extra activities. It seems Mrs. Jones teaches in a different environment. How about practical tips for classrooms with large numbers, emotionally troubled students and low academic and behavioral background levels.
@SusanJonesTeaching
@SusanJonesTeaching Месяц назад
Hi Mark! I have taught in very similar schools prior to this with 28 students, not 32 though and I fully understand how difficult that is! Emotional and behavioral support was heavily needed and my incoming first graders were much closer to kindergarten academically! That being said, none of these ideas would be "extra" but instead should be things you are doing whole group with your students. It was not meant to add to things! If you have a curriculum that already does a lot of these, then that is great, but I know many do not. For example, I mentioned that we use Fundations, which I do largely like, but restructured it and did an OG 3 part drill instead of their review section. I also added concept attainment slides to the beginning of some lessons. Same with making sure dictation and encoding practice was included consistently in my phonics block. Everything here is meant to be done whole group and not in some "extra" time which I have none of lol. I hope that helps!

Hello! How much time does it take for the 3 part drill? Could this be done large group and/or small group? Thank you for the tips when teaching vocabulary. I like how you break it up throughout the week. How much time should it take for vocabulary? I would love for you to do a video on how you set up your slides or at least put in your store for purchase of your template. I just love your slides and the way they look!
@SusanJonesTeaching
@SusanJonesTeaching Месяц назад
Hi Jesse! The 3-part drill should be pretty quick and can be as quick as 7-8 minutes. I simply added to a Google Slideshow all year long (added new sounds for a visual drill and took away sounds as students mastered them), so we would quickly flash through the sounds, then students would skywrite or form about 20 letters on their bumpy boards for the auditory part, then I would use blending slides on the board for the blending drill. So it was very quick unless it was a fun Friday and we incorporated the sand trays! I did my 3 part drill whole group instead of the Fundations review portion about 2-3 times per week. Vocabulary also only took a few minutes before a read aloud - I would introduce the words and give definitions on day 1, then spend a few minutes each day reviewing the words, giving examples, having students use them etc. If you are a member of the clubs, I just gave them all a template to my daily slides to use! They're in the bonus section! I will try to make a video explaining how I make them :)

I'm a teacher in Europe and teach children who are around 6 years old. Many of them speak another language at home, and for some of them the 'instructional' language is their third one. Do you think 15 words per week is feasible? Thank you in advance.
