The bit about minimizing clothing in your closet reminded me of a scene from Parks and Rec that always resonated with me: (At a Halloween party) Andy: Weren't you a pirate last year? Ron: Yes. This is my Halloween costume. Great video. Now subscribed.

"let it take time, let it take money". This tip right here blew my mind. Dovetails nicely with the spark joy thing. Everything you have or keep should be the stuff you like the most and best fits your needs. No point holding on to stuff for 'just because' reasons...or buyer's remorse.

This is the best video you’ve ever made, and I’ve watched almost all of them. Your journey through products, minimalism, and intentionality is inspiring and always brightens up my day. Thank you for the time and care you put into making your videos, and the thoughtful insight you bring to all the subjects you discuss. I look forward to continuing this journey alongside you for many years to come.

Absolutely! Sometime ago I went from the typical small trolley to a small backpack in planes, and the feeling as you say, to be able to board the plane when you feel like and not having to stress about how to get your stuff in one of the luggage compartments, is just awesome! It makes an enormous difference!! Keep it up man!!!

Howdy Chase. I'm a plus size senior female who LOVES your video reviews and subscribed last year. For the past week I've been working on my minimal travel capsule wardrobe. This video is perfect timing. It is THE BEST minimal packing review (of the dozens) that I've watched on RU-vid. Philosophical points #1 and #2 are outstanding. Just last week I figured out what is my most comfy summer 'uniform'. I only travel during warm summer temps. So my lounge uniform is a tank tunic untucked over shorts with pockets + flip-flops. #3 - My fave travel day 'pants' are a pair of plus size black leggings I found online with 4 pockets! #4 - For underwear, years ago a lady online suggested wearing pantiliners in nylon undies to deal with our 'funk'. #5 - I am STILL looking for my best toiletries/dopp kit. The kit I use now is a clear, foldable hanging toiletry bag. IT's about half the width of a small shoebox. It's too awkward and takes up SO MUCH space. But I need a lot of meds, which it holds - so it works for now. But my actual liquids I decanted down to the snack bag size! yay! [I use the hotel's shampoo, conditioner, lotion, hair dryer(rarely), towels, razor - so I don't pack those]. For deodorant, I travel with a couple of travel packets instead of a stick container. Same for SPF 30. I have naturally curly hair so don't usually 'brush ' my hair. I just take a wide tooth comb for shampoo days. I spritz with water from a tiny spray bottle I pack to revive my curls and finger comb in the a.M. or when needed. . In the past few months, as I prepare for my first 'minimal packing' vacation this summer 2019, I found that it takes an OBSESSIVE amount of hard thinking to analyze out what I truly really NEED when I travel vs. what I WANT to take or that might look 'cute'. Your videos helped a lot! fyi, I stopped doing those crazy mushrooms decades ago...Good luck on your MOVE - wow! Thanks for this great video. Peace.

I love minimal travel ever since I started watching your videos. I've figured out what i do and don't need and it takes me literally 10mins to pack for a weekend or for a few weeks away. Takes my wife days to pack! Spending the time and money to figure out what works for yourself is definitely the best advise here!

As a woman I like to wear leggings and I wear them all year long, the good thing about them is that they pack really small so I can have one on and 2-3 spare without taking too much space. I travel with a 30-35L bag which fits under the seat, but I tend to put it up in the compartment if there is space and have just my fanny pack at my seat with earphones (noise canceling!) phone, kindle passport, chap-stick, snacks and water bottle.

Your comment about the one bag that fits under your seat ... Gold! I was one of those guys who would be tense and stressed at the gate, jockeying for position long before they started boarding my section, because I was worried about not having any room overhead for my carryon. Then I did the one bag thing. So much better! I didn’t get up until after they called out my section, just strolled on board, secure in the knowledge that there was a place for my bag at my feet. Then after landing, I just pick it up and go. No worry about getting something out of the overhead without holding up the line of people or knocking someone out as I pulled down the bag. Bliss!!! 👍

The best thing about black jeans, is that you can just dye them black again when they get too faded. But if you blow out crotches of jeans, look into getting them darned. There are companies that will do it for you. If you are dropping the cash for some nice jeans, you might as well invest in getting them repaired.

Chase you are a guru. I’ve been loving this minimal philosophy life coach shit since I found your channel after stumbling upon one of your bag reviews. Also, I recommend folks take a look at the sea to summit toiletry kit. I looked at several and it’s the one I finally went with. Made out of nice material, good organization for my needs, super light and easily cleanable, and it’s very compactable for travel. Best dopp I’ve found yet for my money.

I'm finding all your bag reviews super helpful, and this is a great video as well. Although I wish clothing designers/manufacturers would consistently produce the same clothing pieces so once you find something you like, you can repurchase the same thing down the road.

I just did my first one bag trip with the 30L Topo Travel Bag, which I got inspired to try because of this channel. Thoughts? That thing is awesome! Straightforward, yet organized. The size is perfect, and I simply love the ridiculous, funky look of the bag. Chase is right, the experience of traveling with one minimal setup is bliss, once you get a feel for it, and I'd say a good compact bag alone will make you prioritize and think about what you actually need on the road. Ya'll can bet I'll be honing and focusing my kit, both for travel and living in general, even further in the coming months and years. 🙌🏻

I was folding my laundry, and literally right when I’m folding my Exofficio boxer briefs your segment on them came up... btw - they are great, they’ve been my only boxer briefs for at least 10 years. They not only rock for travel or other body-odor inducing situations, but they also last a long time. Out of 10 pairs, maybe 1-2 lost their elasticity after multiple years of use. Big fan.

Killer video dude. Just love hearing you talk & share your thoughts on this subject. I started selling off so many of my possessions before I drove from California to New York last July. I traveled there with only what I could fit in my car (mostly filmmaking gear and clothing). And two months ago I drove back from New York to where I’m settled now in Utah, with half of what I had last July! And since moving into my apartment in Utah I’ve sold and donated so many more of those things you think you need, but once you live without, you feel so liberated. It’s so freeing to know what you’re looking at in your closet is EVERYTHING. That there isn’t more in storage, or in a hidden cabinet, or in “Space Bags” somewhere out of sight. I don’t think I’ll ever be a gnarly, hard-core minimalist, because I am a traveling filmmaker & photographer and do need my fair share of “junk,” but nonetheless, my life at home has been so much more relaxing and stress-free since getting rid of the unnecessary. It’s a hard feeling to describe, but I appreciate you for also doing your best to share the perspective with others! So rad

I will say that for women, vaginal discharge is daily and the majority of women deal with it. It makes wearing the same undies more than once harder. I find the exofficios for women are easy to wash and dry overnight so that is my solution and I just take one more pair than you do. Also, pants are different for me. I can't just take one pair of jeans because, after the third wear, they are done and hard to wash in the sink. So I take two jeans, 4-6 shirts, and a dress or I take 4 dresses and two pairs of leggings which are far easier to wash in a sink.

I have 1 word for you: vodka. Spray the crotch with vodka after each wear and you probably won't have to wash them for the entire trip (I recommend taking an oil sprayer bottle and buy a demi bottle of vodka when you get there to fill it)

You nailed it. Joy is something I never considered while traveling. I do it at the last minute. I overpack. And my trip usually starts with misery rather than joy. And I carry that attitude with me. No more.

Love the message of this video. Just finished testing my capsule wardrobe for minimal travel in Europe with my Aer travel pack next month! It was a great exercise to relieve the anxiety of weight limits for intra continental flights. As for womens pants and undies, I agree with the previous commenter that it's impossible to bring so few but panty liners are a must for travel for those just in case situations. Pants get dirty too quickly and are heavy so I resort to leggings, since they're socially acceptable now. Thanks for the thoughtful content!

Hmm. I'm not totally comfortable with REPLACING pants with tights (altho I'll always bring tights for layering up); conversely I have decided to embrace the bike short in lieu of shorts - much lighter (weight) than denim shorts, layer easily, can usually wear as boardies in a pinch, (can often get with pockets 🤗), good for working out

7:10 You dont know how much I relate to what Chase just said; I've been looking for some decent and correct fitting pants for almost 4 years since I've stopped the search just last year. What Chase said about "You have to spend the time, you have to spend the money." Many of us and if not all, are caught up about saving money saving money saving money, when in reality we should be spending the time to find a great pants, computer, or anything that you know you'll be using for a while. Buy yourself something that you'll be happy with and even spend a little bit more money to have the quality you've been searching for.

Chase- the logistics of your living out of airbnbs full time and now the cohabitation with another family would be fascinating to learn more about. You offer little insights sprinkled in your videos and I think an entire video on that would be awesome like your Q&A episode. For example, what do you do with all your bags that you receive while being nomadic? Do you ship them back home? So many fascinating logistics. Just telling companies where to ship things to when you are on the go must be a challenge especially for the overseas imports that could take many weeks.

Haven't seen one of your videos in a while, guess youtube for some reason thought I'd taken a break from bag addiction (which I kinda did). Find stuff like this soothing and fun. I have a travel system but I still haven't pared down more than backpack, sack for extra pillows, large duffel. I can do a single carryon rolling bag for a few days but longer than that and I have to leave out essentials.

Funnily enough, Marko and Alex Ayling, the Vagabrothers, have shown me that it is not that "different for women". Found a modern, narrow fit pair of culottes (don't cringe, styles change) that are a great stand-in for a skirt (no chafing), and check out Lisa Eldridge's tips on three make-up items. 26 litres are enough! Impressive talk, important. Freeing up working memory measurably improves intelligence (IQ). What usually wastes working memory among the poor is the worry over money. As soon as the subjects receive adequate funds, their IQs rise significantly (almost a whole standard deviation). Minimal travelling should help me survive my first trip overseas, now that I will have some freed up cognitive work space. Thanks!

Great video mate! Im a bit of a on and off backpacker. I was just wondering how and what you are packing for like. Be in a city, go to the beach, to do some small/day hiking? I would love to drop the check luggage. And cut down to maximum carry on size bag, for some more freedom. A video about this would be great. Cheers.

Merino wool everything, Great pair of multi-use pants and thankful my wife doesn't wear makeup. And no doubt a great backpack, still using my Tom Bihn you recommended. Love that it doesn't stand out so I don't look like a tourist to pray on.

I actually just saw a pair of merino pants online that I think might tick so many of my long pant needs (not WANTS precisely but definitely needs). I saw these men's merino track pants on merino unbound (I think) and wondered if I could find some women's merino yoga pants, which I did but then saw the straight pants and realised they could be track pants AND dress pants - and all-climate wear

From my days in college (aged 17) and for the next 30 years I had my trousers tailor made to my own design. Same with the formal suit I needed for work. The cost was under 10% different to off the shelf clothes that didn't fit or function as I wanted. Unfortunately the skill seems to have disappeared. Even 20 years ago what I got back was not what I asked for in design and it became too much of a hassle to always argue and then wait to get fixed. We are close to the stage where clothes can be laser cut and made up locally so you get clothes that fit, the fashion you choose to wear from designers anywhere in the world. Even knitwear made to your specs by the time you have finished the grocery shopping. The clothing industry is the second biggest polluters in waste and energy. A very high percentage of trending clothes end up in landfill. Sourcing locally picking quality materials and designs that spark joy - it can't happen soon enough Same with the food we eat. I see all those wonderful large shinny fruit in the shops and none come close in taste to what I pick off my trees every autumn. Locally sourced food, fresh to the shop that day from just down the road grown with out a ton of chemicals poured on top. Do the research, intentional living and you might find that you do have more time not less to enjoy those choices.

I cant believe that there are people out there that seriously think that 'geniuses' wear the same clothes every day so they dont waste time on choosing their clothes. The gullibility makes me laugh

You almost lost me with the re-wearing of Undies, LOL. But the overall message of living minimal, living intentional, invest your money in just what you need, speaks to me in where my family is at right now.

What sucks is when you find that perfect pair of pants, shoes or whatever and then they are discontinued when you need to replace them.

No way I can wear underwear more than a day in a row. I don't have a problem down there, but still, not wearing underwear more than a day. LOL
