At last. Somebody explaining the bits and the videos showing them in motion and for each individual look after the cut. Many thanks. Keep safe and well Colin. Ian from Scotland.
Both of my grandfathers died before I came along. Now I’m a grandpa for eight “perfect” grandchildren. Colin is the “perfect” model for the grandfather I never had. His videos are filled with patience and genuine enthusiasm. They work well for a learner at any age. What a treasure!
Great advice on “which bits to buy”! I was so tempted to buy a full set...but backed away from the idea cuz I’m just starting out and, quite frankly, didn’t know when I’d ever use most of the bits in the set. I was happy to see the router I’d selected for my first in your video (the smaller one). It provided the best design for micro-adjustments for depth...great for the flush mounted hinges I installed on my bench. I was surprised to learn that the spiral bit was so fragile and had used it for full cuts in plywood and it passed through like a hot knife through butter. But, you’re the expert and maybe I was putting more stress on the bit than I realize...slow and easy from now on...thanks again!
"Just buy the bits that you need, when you need them." That's the best piece of advice. Really, you start thinking about all the things you could do and all the equipment you could get, and you just don't know where to start or where to end. Thank you
Very useful information shared.. I owned routers for several years and what I love about woodworking is there is always something new to learn. Thank you so much for passing on these gems.
Thank you so much for this thorough video. I'm brand new to woodworking and am waiting for my first router to come in the mail. I've been watching videos on how to make a tapering jig. They all make multiple passes when making slots but nobody has ever explained why. Now I understand. Thanks!
Dear Colin, the way you speak an use the language its so easy to understand for me that you're becomed my english teacher's Thank you so much for patient and dedition that you use to learn us all tip and trick you know. This is written by myself
Excellent video as usual Colin. Very informative for a novice woodworker like me.You are one of the reason I have developed liking for wood working. Thanks my friend.
Another great video Colin. As I mentioned before, your production values are some of the best i have seen on you tube. Lighting, audio, editing and content are great! Keep up the good work! Maybe you should offer a DVD collection of your videoes as gifts!
Colin, its really interesting and helpfull watching your videos. You make it very simple and easy to understand just following your detailed explanation. I might also add the exquisit english you have with your paused and patient guidance in mostly all videos Ive seen. Im just a newcomer on the woodworking hobby and each one of your videos is a delightfull lesson. Txs and saludos desde Argentina!!
Thanks very much! Straight to the point. Easy to understand. Let me know exactly what I needed and how to use them. Wonderful video, very helpful. Thank you sir!
I know the common advice is to buy router bits as you need them, but Katz-Moses' approach might be better. His advice is to buy a cheap set (~$100 for 30 bits) then replace the bits with high quality ones as needed. That way you don't spend big money on bits you use sparingly and you can keep in the flow of working on a project instead of having to run to the store everytime you need a different bit. Anyway I like that approach thought I'd share. Love the channel, I've learned so much from here.
I agree and this is the approach I have taken. I bought a very large set at a great sale price and have actually not had any problems but when I do it will be with a more frequently used bit and then I will replace it with a higher quality bit. This way I always have the bit I need and don't have to run out a buy one. I think in the long run it is a cost effective solution.
This is how I started I couldn't afford a expensive set so got a set in the sales 60% iv never used the other 40% which i replaced are freud pro which I use all the time
Regardless, you're going to keep going back to the store replacing your cheap bits for something better. I rather buy good bits one at a time as needed. Good bits are expensive, but it's all worth it in the long run. I feel like you're actually saving money buying good bits once and not buying it twice.
Great advice. My father was told by his father when my father asked about building up a tool-box. My grandfather said to buy something each week you need to use. My grandfather was a woodworker. I'm 50 just a few days ago. Sage advice.
first time i see this video. thank you so much!! i just bought my new Dewalt 2000V router and im waiting for my bits set to arrive. this video is VERY helpfull!!
Great video as always Colin. I have a suggestion for a follow-up video - cleaning and sharpening your router bits. I got the inspiration from looking a your bits in the video :). They look like mine.
I am new to this and anything I need to learn I check out RU-vid for all wood working info and any video by Colin is always the best out there. He is as good as a personal in house teacher. Maybe even better. On the last bit you showed for drilling holes did your groove eventually create a complete hole or just a deep channel
A very good video for beginners. When I was younger, I could only afford one bit at a time. I now have a small collection that I use regularly. One suggestion though, I bought a package of three very inexpensive diamond stones to periodically sharped the bits. Just a thought.
Awesome video! I think when it comes to bits, it's a good idea to buy a large discount starter set for practice and inspiration. Then replace single bits with a higher quality brand as soon as they show some wear: You use those often enough, so they deserve to be upgraded.
Excellent video. Love the editing. Someone should make a video on creating woodworking videos - I see so many videos where I'm constantly turning the volume down when a cut is being made, or the volume is so low I can barely hear the speaker.
Great video, thanks. I just bought a cordless ryobi handheld router on sale today at home depot and I have no idea how to use it 😂 your video really helps which bit to use.
Great video and information. I use the same bits that you showed the most. And you are so right, buy the bits as you need them, that way you dont go into debt in purchasing bits you dont need. They do add up and they are not cheap, Thanks again. and be safe. Tim
Awesome advice Colin, I remember buying my first router and of course right next to the routers are the assorted sets and I didn’t buy the biggest set but close I want to say 25 bit set I’ve used probably 9 or 10 of them before realizing that it’s much better to buy the bits as needed. And these 5 are used all the time plus a few other’s in my shop. Also if you find certain ones you use a lot buy the best you can afford. Thank you Colin take care my friend.
My woodworking teacher many years ago completely turned me off of woodworking or doing anything with my hands. It has taken me to 70 years old before I could gather enough courage to set up my own shop. So many wasted years because of negativity.
