My love for medicine is unmatched and am going to make sure that I get 9 distinctions like last year in grade 12 this video is motivating me as a matriculant
@@Internetprofile01-p1o AAh the least I can say is never stop learning no matter how much you know secondly give your studies enough time and plan on how you are going to obtain good marks and don't forget to have fun. Work smart not hard always be ahead, education is unlimited but time is limited learn and teach others about what you have learnt, don't forget to pray🤣🤣take it step by step and don't be hard on yourself we can all agree that we don't like to study but we have to I know it's a tiring and painful procedure but you will be proud of yourself one day
"Its not a race, You dont have to catch up to nothing" an actual word!! Thoroughly enjoyed the video For me personally, The hours we work especially in the public sector is not proportional to how much wr earn. Sikhathele!!
Maybe you can add that some interns don't get placed in their preferred provinces or not placed at all. The dept of health in various provinces don't pay interns on time and don't pay relocation even if there are no doctors quarters.
Thank you for breaking it down for us !! Do you perhaps have a video about books you found useful throughout your medical school journey (especially for first years😭🙏)?
Dr Ann please spill the beans, I'm really looking into doing Medicine,I'm in Gr 11 and I've been doing research since I was in Gr 9, I just love the idea of seeing people coming into a surgery sick and leaving all better. But I'm also very nervous, I don't know if the money will be enough to keep me afloat or if it will require me start a side business...so please spill, even if you delete it afterwards 🙏🏾❤️
The money is not enough compared to the amount of time you have to put in. There's other careers like IT or software development (anything in the technology sector) see that's the future. With Medicine job security is nolonger a thing because the government won't fund posts apparently there's no money. You can still go overseas i e. Canada or Ireland. HOWEVER.... THE Field of medicine is not only interesting and mind-blowing but very satisfying to see people get well or just being able to help people. It gives one a greater purpose I can't explain the feeling of contributing to save lives🥰😍. So don't do it for the money because when you're sleep deprived and stressed out it's not worth it. The people make it worthwhile
I love being a Dr but I'm scared of blood, sick people and I don't even wanna mention a person dying in my care😔. I studied Med few years back n embrology assured me that I would die of being scared but I told myself that I'm gonna be a big girl n push. Unfortunately I fell pregnant on my second year n bcz of where I was studying n their rules, I had to come back to SA n decided to raise my baby n change a career. Now my baby is at school n I'm doing my 2nd yr in Construction n I'm loving it....
Also was a bit scared at the thought of cutting through people 😸🤣 I found it creepy and wierd but you literally grow a thick skin and get used to it but some people don't get used to it and drop out during clinical years imagine after having put in so much time. Glad you found joy elsewhere and are making it🥳🥳❣️🌺
Also found things to be gross like needles entering skin😆 body fluids, bad trauma's etc. overtime I got used to it. You grow a thick skin the more you see it🤞🏽 you'll even get to like the adrenaline rush that comes with it ☺️
Thank you so much for sharing this information Dr Ann. I want to know how many years can I study a medical course as a postgraduate, I am studying Bsc in biological science with Microbiology and Biochemistry now and I'm thinking of doing a medical course after this degree.
So it depends on the university. Here are your options: 1. Start from first year medicine- Some universities will credit you for some of the courses you may have covered. If you covered All they might send you to start in 2nd year 2. Get in via Wits Graduate entry program. So you apply to write an exam containing major 2nd year subject (anatomy, molecular medicine and physiology). Once you pass, bearing in mind it's competitive they take the top something 😱. There's RU-vid videos of people who got in via the WITS GEMP just look it up. All the best🔆💮🌸
Hectic but very unfortunate truth. At this rate we might be forced to leave the country to get better opportunities abroad. Our government is failing us 😢.
I completed MD forensic medicine in India. I am an Indian resident. I want to work in South africa. Can you assist me with the steps and procedure to work in South africa.
thank you doctor for posting this. I have a question, do u have any idea regarding the process of internship in terms if its restricted to south african medical graduates or as well foreign medical graduates ? I am a final year medical student and I am ambitious to persue my medical training in SA
Last time I checked it was restricted to South Africans and at this point they're struggling to make space for south Africans alone. Most people would go back to their home countries (to e.g Lesotho, Zim etc.) and only come back to work via process of work permit/visa thereafter
so when you're given the list of hospitals to choose from for your internship, are you allowed to put hospitals from only 1 province? #A_concerned_4th_year😁
It depends on your bursary and contract. If bursary (esp government ones) limits you to province or district or sub district, those are the only options that will appear online on your list. I will make a whole video explaining the process
Hey doctor 👋I just finished my matric last year and I only got one distinction so I went back to school this year and I was wondering if I can still apply to study medicine or I no longer qualify?
Good info but word of advice, don’t comment much on other careers especially if you’re not knowledgeable, “other careers you don’t need to put much effort” you’d be surprised how many careers demand more effort than medicine…
This comment would be sensible if I'd specified those careers. Maybe you can enlighten us on your knowledge of the careers you're referring to that are demanding (outside of medicine that is) , so that we learn something new 🙂
Yoh I just started grade 10 and I want to be a medical doctor but I’m so scared that I might not get there. How did u manage to get through high school.
Highschool is pretty manageable. You just need to study everyday. Also do past papers pertaining to the topics you're doing everyday. They repeat alot of the work and if you understand the concepts you will be able to apply it in any questions you're asked. Do that till grade 12 then you'll be fine 🙌🏾 all the best 🙏
With Medicine it's different because after graduation you get a list of hospitals to pick from and government bursary holders will get first preference other than that there's no discrimination regarding where one studied.
That's not true, I'm doing my medicine at UL, all the graduates were placed in hospitals, Medicine is the same it doesn't matter where you do it, as long as you're registered by HPCSA, you will definitely be placed for your internship
Hi Dr Ann. Thanks for the video. I have just finished my medical training at Uni of Zambia. But would love to work in SA after my internship and community service years. Do you know the procedures? And the experience of foreign doctors once they get into the SA system. Looking forward to your response
hi. what if you want to transfer to work overseas, would you have to do an interview or will the transfer be as swiftly as you mentioned earlier in the video? And what if you want want to studying medicine abroad, are they any major differences for e.g the span in terms of years or other differences?
Let me answer you.Yes,you will need to transfer some credits that would be accepted in your abroad. If you want USA you might have 2-3years again of study and then sit for the board and yet still have to wait to residents application to be picked yes, some doctors are still on waiting list to be chosen to set for residency/internship Remember, legal papers still means a great deal ✌️
hey DOC thanks for the video and I am 5th yr. medical student from Ethiopia I'd love to work in SA would you tell me how much hard it is and if that is possible
I would have literally told you if I was the only one with that salary. The rate is similar to other careers but with overtime ( extra 80h in top of the 8 to 40). Yes .. You get paid during internship and comserve. Please believe me when I say The salary is not worth the time spent on the job
@@AnointedRain since you already have US citizenship it should be easier to go back you just need to find out from US side credibility of e.g. south African degree, if there's exams you write when going back etc.
I got the dept of health eastern cape. I applied at the department of health district office in my area. I think private bursaries are better. You don't have to pay back by working in that province for the set number of years. Literally most people checked on Google and just applied everywhere.
Glad you asked. 1. Free housing(we stay at the hospital)😄😂 2. Banks and bankers😂 3. Locums (side hustles) theatre assistant or stand in for GPs to make extra cash 🤞🏽
@@AHMED-xz7kk so it depends on the university some start in 2nd year others in 3rd year (usually 1 or 2days in hospital a week). It's full time in hospital from 5th year usually
Yes it depends with universities, where I'm from we start with clinical as early as 1st yr, doing basics once a week... but full time from 4th yr - 6th yr. 4yr you attend while going to the hospital. But from 5 - 6 it's hospital only
@@DrAnn_Healthhub Thank you for replying, just one last question. Does the salary increase as the years go by (like does it increase with experience) ??
How are the non clinical careers compared to clinical in terms of hours pay and opportunities. And how would someone access those types of corporate and pharma jobs T.I.A
The non clinical side of medicine however can be limiting in terms of the fact that there's no extra money made from overtime/ commuted 80h (sometimes) and you can't get the option to make money via private avenues. Commuted overtime makes up to around 30% of the whole salary. The nice thing is that you have more time to spend with family but the money is sometimes 10-30% less according to the advertised notches but sometimes the benefits match up or boost the salary. Those jobs e.g. medical advisers for pharmaceutical companies are advertised by recruitment agencies or companies themselves. That's about as much I know people in the actual fields can advise...
I always tell people that you can’t pay me enough to work like a slave. I had an interview recently and I probably didn’t get the job because I said that I crack under pressure. I’m not a doctor by the way
I'm happy you replied So I have passion about medicine....the thing is my metric grades are poor and doesn't match the requirements of getting into medicine. But I'm planning to go back 2 school next year so I'll achieve higher grades.....I'm wondering if that's possible for me I'm trying to get as much information as I can
Into university? no Into workplace we just need to pass 6th year exam from respective universities then we are placed into the different hospitals, clinics etc..
Dr Ann pls explain the process of going to Cuba immediately after high school....this other wits students said I should start at wist first n wits has a program where I can go to Cuba...then when I fail at Cuba coz of the lack of knowledge of some other (south African systems is low) wits can take me back rather than going straight after high school then failing and I still have to start applying in SA
Also the department of health in the different provinces is responsible for taking student applications and funding students to go to Cuba not the university. But we'll explain everything in the video next week
Hi Ann Can I ask can you transfer hospital at age i.e 40 or 45 Can a person from Britain transfer to a South African hospital with his skill to help people
Hi yes it is possible. I know someone we studied with upgraded his maths during gap year and got in the following year. The important thing to do is to consolidate your certificate at dept of education so that the new marks are on the same certificate or updated before applying 🌺. All the best 🤗
Informative video, thank you so much Dr.Ann , do you mind if i ask which University did you do your degree? because apparently some universities don't pay for clinical work.
Hi... Wits university. You only get paid when working as an intern after graduating. Student Nurses get paid for clinical work, the same doesn't apply for medical students
