Great intro! I think that the "power not earned" is what rattles me the most with the chosen one, honestly. The muppets when talking of the evil lord! Anyways, I agree that intent is the point here--evil for the sake of evil is annoying, or evil because of trauma is just disgusting D: Great video!

I can't think of a single, medium-rare done trope that I don't like. Great, quick dive into those 5 big tropes. I can't belive how often we're just supposed to buy into certain things without any of the leg work being done.
@@BiblioTheory man, it's been tough to have the energy and get in the headspace to write lately. I got through the major overalls of the first 4 chapters and added a prologue. I'm partway though revising chapter 5, which should go easily if I can just sit down and do it. Beyond that it's all new words. I know how I want everything to go beyond that as well, so it's just a matter of getting in the mood to do it. Things are working out in favor of reducing those roadblocks, so hopefully I'll be able to get back into the swing of it very soon. Maybe 1st quarter of next year to get it to a point ready for an editor? I'll be trying to do a Kickstarter around then as well to see if I can fund the endeavor via pre-sales and possibly special editions.
There's no way you just said Frodo is a Chosen One. Or Paul Atreides? Drilling down to your specific complaints, they are neither Flawless nor do they have Unnearned Abilities
I agree with you! Frodo and Paul are just a couple of examples I listed for "Chosen One" figures that people can easily cling to from popular media out right now. Not saying they're flawless at all.

Isn't the whole Paul Atreides thing to show how profecies are dangerous and should not be followed? Like he's the son of the Gessit and has been trained his whole life to fight and all that stuff, not to mention the prophecy is being planted by the Gessit, so power was earned. I'd argue that Paul is actually a subversion of the trope. Did I miss anything in the book? It's been a long time since I read
You're correct! I just listed Paul as an example of the chosen one trope (at least from the perspective of the first book.) Not saying his power wasn't earned at all 🫡🪱
One trope I dislike is female characters being given lesser challenges or having them go through less than a male counterpart but having similar outcones. And thats not me dunking on female characters or women, but more on writers, and thats men or women. Female characters shouldn't he protected or wrapped in cotton wool, they should overcome the same challenges as make heroes. I think we're seeing that a lot at the moment with female characters, particularly in mainstream media, pretty much boss the whole movie/book, resulting in their victory feeling unearned.
