"Succession" may be over but there are still many great stories about court intrigue, power grabs, backstabbing, shady dealings, uneasy alliances, Machiavellian maneuvers and verbal abuse.
And here is a list of five great films to fill up that Succession-sized hole in your heart. Five films full of plots, lies, betrayals, schemes, conspiracies and curses. Five films to watch after the most amazing finale of our age.

I recommend The Celebration by Thomas Vinterberg. The influence on Succession is pretty clear in the voyeuristic film style and the tortured family dynamics.

Glengarry Glen Ross has multiple elements to it that make it the true inspiration for Succession, like how it uses capitalism and morally grey characters. It's one of my favorite films and is Mamet's best screenplay to date. I recommend The Parallax View, which also inspired Better Call Saul's cinematography.

Personally I recommend anything based on Shakespearian tragedy. I watched Throne of Blood (1957) which is based on Macbeth and it was amazing.

It doesn't have the same tone, it's mostly Torisho Mifune giving an over the top performance in an adaptation of Macbeth, not saying it's bad but really? How could a Kurosawa relate to an Adam Mckay movie?

Not what Shiv did but how Ken reacted. I expected him to be more than a spoiled child at this point. It was always right there in the opening credits though, shouldn't have surprised me. I'm not gonna make a video specifically about the ending, but Succession is perfect in so many ways I'll use it as an example in the future for sure.

@@Moviewise in my view, it’s the fact that he finally had it in his grasp. There was no doubt in his mind that he was going to be made king and it was taken at the 11th hour. If Shiv had simply beat him it wouldn’t have ripped his heart out, he’d already begun to accept that. But the betrayal of her promise reduced him to a child.

It was a good show, but the ending didn't provide the proper denouement. It seemed rushed and while the writers did a decent job of making a rational and believable ending to the character's lives in line with dramatic principles, I thought it was a little flat and uninspired. Shiv hates her brother that much? Why? The truth is she didn't make the decision because she hates her brother, she did it because she's a power hungry woman and basically a villain. Kendall can't be CEO (the hero's reward) because he's not a hero and doesn't deserve it. As the writer's said, "He killed a kid." and when confronted with it, he is a coward and runs from the truth. This works dramatically so it's fine. Roman cannot be CEO because he is also not a hero. He's the least villainous of all the children, but he is still cruel and impulsive, even though he does show some elements of humanity which give him sympathy with the audience. The least villainous of all the characters are Tom and Greg, which is why they are the one's rewarded in the end. But neither of them are heroes, both are incredibly flawed. This is why the ending felt flat. None of these characters truly deserve the reward of the narrative. They are all despicable in their own way, which is the fault of the writers. They tried to garner some sympathy with the scene where the kids watch the home video of their father singing, but that fell flat too. These people are all horrible, with perhaps only Greg being redeemable - Maybe Tom, but neither of them did anything to redeem themselves. So what we're left with is a story about horrible people doing horrible things and in the end, the faux protagonist Kendall doesn't get what he's been pining for the entire series. Is it a tragedy? No, because tragedy must have a hero brought down by his own flaws. Kendall was never a hero, he was always a villain. While I did like the series for its great dialogue, direction, and gravitas, I don't think they nailed the character progressions. If you look at a series like House of Cards, which was also about horrible people, there was no misperception about Kevin Spacey's Underwood. He was a villain, but we respected his villainy. He made no allusions to being a hero, so the audience could go along for the ride with him in his nefarious behavior. With Kendall, Chivon, and Roman, we're not sure if we're supposed to get behind their villainy fully and root for their evil triumph or to hope for their redemption. I don't think their arcs were focused enough. Consider instead that you keep the overall plot and resolution, but instead of Chivon changing her vote, Kendall has a moment of clarity and realized that 1. He doesn't deserve to be CEO because he killed a kid, and 2. He wants to destroy what his father created because what his father created was evil, so he changes his vote at the last moment leaving everyone in shock. He has defeated the beast of his own ambition which has driven him to commit horrible acts the entire series and destroyed the name of his father. He walks out of the board meeting on the road to redemption and seeing him staring off into the bay holds a completely different meaning.
