Just a note on the terra vise. I picked one up at Cabela’s before watching your review. Afterwards, I planned to return it because I was having the same issue with the vise tightening after three rotations. I had a bunch of flies I wanted to tie for a trip, so I figured I would spin them up and bring the vise back the next day. After playing around a bit (the included instructions were not great) I discovered that getting the vise to rotate was just a matter of process. You have set the disc closest to the jaws so it is just far enough away to allow the jaws to rotate, then you tighten the smaller disc (the one with the handle) INTO the first one until it’s tight. Then the vise rotated freely and very smoothly. So for those of you considering the Terra vise, it does work well as a rotary vise.
Thanks for the honest review Matt. This is so much more than a how to fly tying channel, please keep up the fantastic work. Thanks for giving back to the community.
Good information Matt! You're doing a great job of helping new tyers and the fly tying community in general. I've never had a Supreme but I would probably pick that one just to mess around with the different jaws! $20 worth of fun!
That's actually a good idea Daryl! I've never even pulled it apart to mess with the other jaws. Now you've given me something to do on the next night I'm not making a video. :-)
#vise shame the cabelas vise messed up pretty cool looking for 50.00. I like your idea of having a light portable vise as travel vise. I'm looking at a few but they cost more.
Thanks Matt you're amazing all these people start channels to make money and it's all you do is give the money away thank you thank you thank you #Vise
Nice to see affordable options and you did a real in depth review of each model. The biggest barrier to entry in fly tying is the price and this video just changed that.
Great review Matt, my first vise was a AA supreme I got from Jans netcrsft and I stripped the same screw you spoke of. I have the danvise now I like it real well, I'd love to have a travel vise too #vise
Nice review. I was looking for an inexpensive #vise to get my grandsons involved in tying. The Riverruns catches my eye, and the Maxcatch is a close second. I’ve never used the Terra vise, but I did buy their bobbin cradle for one of my vises. Simple, but works. I agree with you on the rotary function of the Terra. If it did that to me, I definitely wouldn’t endorse it.
Thanks Will; I appreciate you seconding my opinion. :-) As for the Riverruns... it's solid. That would be a great intro for your grandsons. And if you get to spend time with them tying, that's worth far more than the money. :-)
Hi Matt. Once again, nice review. Your timing is unbelievable. Looking again for a #Vise but this one is for my son. He uses the one I got for my grandson. My grandson just told me he can't ty because dad's using it. Wish me luck
Ha! That's funny Nich! I tell you what... I've got an extra kit I can send for your son or grandson if you'd like. If I mail it to you can you get it to them?
Hey Matt! Honest as always with the review, good stuff. It's really a shame about the Terra vise because it's a really nice looking vise for the money but like the old saying goes " looks aren't everything".
Yep, I'm wondering if I should give it another chance and return this one for a replacement. Maybe if I did and the second one had the same issue, we'd have our answer. But it is possible I just got a lemon.
Good evening Matt. Thank you for another great review. Been looking at getting my nephew into tying and picking up a travel vice for myself. Hope you have a good evening my friend. #vice
Thank you Karl! That would be great if you could get someone in the next generation into tying. :-) And PS: check your spelling... it's vise with an s or else the comment picker won't see this one. :-)
Great run down, Matt. Especially given most people review the pricey vises, which is nice but not necessarily accessible for everyone. I enjoy using a $50ish crown rotating vise, though the jaws don’t really work for small (18 or smaller) hooks. I recommend that style along with the ones you’ve highlighted. Enjoy the channel! #vise
Thanks Dave, and yes, I love the Crown! I almost included it in this batch but may review it separately. And I agree, down to a #14 or 16, that thing does great. Try to put an 18 or 20 in it and you might end up launching hooks across the room. :-)
I have sent some flying! I have a midge fly adapter that just goes into the jaws of the vise. Works fine, not ideal, but for about $4 it does the trick.
Hey I just got a supreme and every time I try to lock it all the way down it opens back up and the hook falls out. Are you not supposed to lock it all the way down? It stays pretty tight with the lever not completely down but I thought it was supposed to be locked all the way down where the lever is 90 degrees?
That's odd. I can't remember having that problem when I tied with a Supreme. But it has been over a decade since I've used one regularly. If I recall, I did usually adjust the jaws so that I could lock it all the way down. If you're locking it down all the way and it has a tendency to want to pop back open, try to open the jaws just a bit and then lock it down.
@@SavageFlies Ok thanks I appreciate it. Yeah I was trying that actually and just couldn’t seem to ever lock it all the way down without it opening back up. It holds a hook pretty tight with the lever bent to the point right before it clicks all the way down if that makes sense, but just thought it was supposed to be pushed all the way down so was wondering about it.
Hi Matt. These vises are not for me,but we are starting Friday night at the bench again.Going to have a fly tying competition. One for the newbie tiers, and one for the veterians tiers. One of these vises would be a good prize for the newbie tiers. #vise. Ken and Linda
Great review Matt, love to see and hear about new people tying It's a great feeling when you catch fish on a fly that you tied your self Thanks for all you do
Ha! Well thanks Deake. Just drop me an email if you see any you're considering and if I know anything about it I'll be happy to share my experiences. matt@savageflies.com
12/17/23 Hey Matt just Subscribed to your channel I’ve never tied anything before so I’m gonna to dive into a new hobby I’m an avid fisherman I’ve never fly fished before. Been fresh water for years and within the last five years I’ve been saltwater fishing mostly ground fishing cod/ haddock ect. My last trip out one of the mates a young lady was trying teaser’s and I brought 3 for $10 good deal I think but it intrigued me and think I’m going to go for it so much appreciate this advice/ video and going to explore more of your videos at 60 years old I need a hobby to keep me in my fishing room I built lol. Sorry for the long comment but as you know starting out don’t want to be too cheap but no need for top of the line so thanks again I’m glad I found your channel any advice I’m open to have a Merry Christmas and great new year. PS I’m not planning on fly fishing 😂
Thanks for the honest reviews Matt. We can tell it isn't easy for you to do those negative reviews but that makes them all the more credible IMHO. Seems like the quality of the stuff Cabelas is selling is heading downwards lately. Have a great week!
Thanks Garrett! And yeah, you may be right. I've gotten plenty of quality products from Cabela's and Bass Pro but I was definitely disappointed in this one.
Thanks Jim! After playing with these two duds I thought about just not reviewing them. But then I thought it might save somebody out there from making a bad purchase. Who knows... but I was definitely disappointed with the one I got from Cabela's.
Nice video Matt, as always. Thank you for your honesty. I know giving a less than stellar review on products can be difficult. Your reasons are valid. Keep up the good work. #Vise
Thank you Charlie! This kind of feedback means a lot because you're right, I don't like leaving a bad review on anything. But if it ends up helping another tier out there, than it's worth it.
Thanks Charlie! I'd love to hear from someone who was able to make it work. One commenter said he did after putting some super glue on the threads. PS: check your spelling. It's vise with an s and no space (#vise). :-)
@@SavageFlies yes sir and I still have all the problems with it but I don't use it as a Rotating vice It's good for packing dear hair and stacking dear hair that's about all you get used for
Great review as always. I have recently upgraded my vice to a Peak Rotary pedestal. It’s great. Love your honest feedback. Good luck to all the entrants. I hope they fall in love with fly tying and can upgrade their current vice or get their first one from you. Have a great week Matt.
Thank you Richard; I appreciate kind and sincere comments like this. I too usually hope my giveaways go to someone who really needs it, or puts it to good use. Anything we can do to get new tiers interested in our sport is a good thing. :-)
Darrell- I just did the drawing and congrats; you won the Maxcatch Vise. Send me an email with your address and I'll get it mailed ASAP. matt@savageflies.com
Matt, thank you for your great reviews. I am curious why you do not mention the hook sizes these vises can take? I understand the answer to the hook size might be "it depends". I think hook size will help folks decide what to get. Keep up these great reviews.
#vise great review, I'm surprised you didn't have the crown vise; the price is right in that wheelhouse. Thanks for everything you do for the tying community👍👍👍
Appreciate it Thomas! I almost did do the Crown again, but I already repeated two and thought doing "6 vises for under $50" might have been too much. I might just review the Crown separately as I do still kind of like that one.
#vise Great review Matt. My $20 vise I bought in the 80's has the exact 3 heads like the Supreme. Mine's a pedestal. I was outside about 20 minutes ago and saw a beautiful grey fox, PRIMO fur!🐺 Maybe a good omen 🤓 Good luck all ☘ Thanks Matt
Oh man, I would love to see a nice grey fox in the wild. We have plenty of red foxes down here but I usually only see them after they have succumbed to a traffic accident.
@@SavageFlies yeah I've only seen a few grey fox over the years. Lots of red ones though. Seen lots of cool things involving red fox and other wildlife. Marty Stouffer's Wild America stuff :o)
Question, do you prefer the Supreme or MaxCatch vise? Great review videos. I liked in the other video where you demonstrated the hook holding power and one handed use
Thank you for the honest reviews! I was between the Terra vise and the sportsmans Colorado angler vise.. went with sportsmans for a few extra bucks and it's been worth it.
It sounds like you made the right call Pierce! I've played around with that rotary vise and it's actually a solid tool. J. Stockard sells the same thing, I think they call it their EZ Rotary. It might be time for me to do another review on this style vise. Thanks for the note. :-)
I have the 1st he reviewed I have had it maybe a month and my hooks slip a lot and the jaws are starting to fold in where the hooks have been placed so there are not solid steel it’s like soft so it just molds to the hooks size
Paul- I just did the drawing and congrats; you won the Riverruns Vise. Send me an email with your address and I'll get it mailed ASAP. matt@savageflies.com
Excellent informational video! Very well done Sir. I really like the look of the one with the bag cheap...qualify...gets the job done and I am a bit of a fan of simple things 😊. #Vise There's my shot at it thanks big guy!! Keep the videos coming. By the way....what's the chances of getting you to do some "Steelhead/Brown Trout Jigs " i would like to see you tie up a few of your own little creations (OR) Top 5 known Steelhead Jig patterns.... maybe 4/5 video series on the top 5 most well known patterns or something. Either way Definitely looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us next! My boy and I will be eagerly awaiting the next video have a good one All!
I appreciate it Brandon! Are you talking about something like this one Sean Holsinger tied: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TOttQCW3zIQ.html If so, I can add a few of these to my to-do list. I'm not a steelhead fisherman (yet) so I'm not too familiar with what works. But I do have a lot of books!
Cut all the bells and whistles as a beginner.Purchase the Supreme to begin and keep the other $25 towards a quality vise.Take it from a tool and vise “junkie”
Awesome review of vises for new comers learning to tie fly’s. I would surely lean towards the $20 vise at this point. Great review! You mentioned the one vise was a Supreme vise. Which co makes that vise. I found various supreme vises. Any information would be helpful. Thank you!
Thanks David, and that's an excellent question! Lots of vendors will market the Supreme. You'll find the same thing with the AA or Super AA (which is often included in tying kits). Here's the Supreme at J. Stockard. www.jsflyfishing.com/js-tools-supreme-vise But you can usually find it at Amazon and other places for about the same price. Sometimes you might see it marketed by "Colorado Anglers" or "Anglerhaus" etc. Hope this helps!
My #vice is angling! Really enjoy your channel and content I like how you’re obviously a well-versed Angler. Find a lot of great information in your uploads they’ve helped me tremendously. Stoked to have found the non-yuppie fly tying channel 😎🤙
Hahaha! Dude, I work for the government and wear a bowtie to work every day! But yeah, I drive an F-150 and hunt and fish. :-) I appreciate the note my friend. And PS: check your spelling. It's vise with an s or else the comment picker won't find it!
Hey Matt, have you come across a good real true rotary vice for less than $100? I have 4 vices now, 2 of them are really old stationary similar to the first 2 you showed, and 2 rotate but aren't exactly great. Squeaks, doesn't rotate that smoothly, or they seize up like the one your showed on this video. The one I'm currently using all the time is a Cabela's $30 clamp one, and it squeaks when you rotate, doesn't rotate smoothly, and it's not really good for small flies, which I'm tying more these days. Thanks for the video!
Hi Alex. The Griffin Odyssey Spider is probably your best bet for a true rotary. It's nothing too fancy but you can tie pretty small on it and the ones I've played with are pretty smooth. amzn.to/3AQFNUj If you want to see it in action, I did a fairly brief review of it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ph8Bz5e_Mzg.html
Heck it would be worth getting one of those vices just for the c-clamp if your vice didn't come with one. I don't know what Renzetti gets for their c-clamp but I'm betting it's more than $20. Keep the good stuff coming Matt. I guess you could use those other 2 vices for each end of bush machine. #vise
That's actually a great idea for a brush making machine! I've seen a few DIY and review videos on them and they look like it wouldn't be too hard to make one out of a couple of boards and some eyelets.
Good review of some inexpensive vises for beginners !! Any one of the 3 you did like would be a great addition to my travel bag when I go to a show to demonstrate tying & my flies. It would be great to set one up to allow anyone interested in trying to tie a fly. I have a fly tying show in Indiana on Feb 12th that I will be tying at & this would be awesome to have one to allow me to share with those stopping by my booth. Thanks again !! David M. Clunk - Fisher-of-Men Fly Tying Ada, Michigan #vise
I’m really happy that you are reviewing inexpensive vises as possible choices for new tyers. I’ve seen some recent video and a print reviews that say new tyers should start out buying a lifetime vise which I think could be a costly choice. I wish everyone would love tying, but that is just a wish. With a good quality, inexpensive vise, a new tyer can find out if he or she likes tying, can afford more materials on the $ saved, & gain enough experience to find out what types of flies they want or need to tie & what features they want in a lifetime vise before deciding if they want continue tying. Future video idea: Some kind of fly tying spelling contest with a wacky but useful prize featuring vise vs. vice, tier vs. tyer, aftershaft vs. filo plume, etc. ;-)
This is a great comment Bob and I agree 100%. I might mention this in my next vise review. I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with starting with an economy vise. If you find you like the sport you'll likely want to upgrade in a couple of years anyway, and now you'll have a backup vise or one you can donate to a kid or another new tier. And worse case scenario, if you find you don't really care for tying, you're not out that much. :-)
Thanks for the advice # Vice , I’m a new to fly tying bought a vice and tools for my son Inlaw and tried it really like doing it’s very satisfying to create a fly that a nice trout will take woolly buggers are a favorite I actually caught a 2lb bass on my woolly bugger I tied with his tools.
Absolutely Mark; that's what it's all about! PS though, please edit this to put #Vise, with an s and no space. Otherwise the random comment picker won't see this one. :-)
Matt from the vises under $100 video I’ve been considering the crown vise. It looks easier to use/setup than some of the others. Do you still recommend it if a starter vise? Unfortunately I didn’t find your videos until after I bought the Colorado kit after so far I have tied around 200 flies before the jaws started to let the hook slip.
Thanks for the question Kevin, and I do actually still recommend the Crown. Unless... you tie a lot of flies smaller than a #18. It has great hook-holding power and can work down to a #20 or so but you have to put a pretty big bite on the hook and it doesn't leave you with a lot of room for material. For standard trout sizes in #12-14 or bigger it works like a champ. And you're right, there is hardly any setup at all to it. The first time you use it you might loosen one bolt to get a comfortable angle, then you won't have to mess with it again.
I just found your channel recently. You do an outstanding job getting content out. I have been looking for a new #vise, so this video was spot on! Are you still in the Savage River area? If so, we're more or less neighbors! Thanks for the video's and opportunity
Thanks Jeff and welcome aboard! I actually live in southern Maryland but have a farm out near Cumberland. I get to the Savage every month or so when we go out (usually for a long weekend or holiday).
That's exactly what I do Scott! I keep a bag with the essentials under the back seat in my truck. I don't use it that often but I have broken it out at a campsite a time or two and once while bored one night on a family vacation. :-)
Matt, thanks for the review and comparison of the maxcatch and river runs #vise I have been leaning towards the maxcatch. Now after your video, the river runs wins. You can use the bag as a dust cover when mounted on the bench.
Actually that's a great idea! I think the Maxcatch might *look* a little cooler with the shiny aluminum and green color, but for functionality, I probably like the Riverruns just a bit better. Their knobs for adjusting the post and barrel are a little bigger and easier to turn by hand. And yeah, the bag is cool too. :-)
Thank you Kevin; I appreciate the kind words! And PS: check your spelling... its' vise with an s or the comment picker won't find this one. But believe me, you're not the only one who has commented with "vice." :-)
Nice review. I need to buy a vice to aid in dubbing loops and a stationary table-mounted vice is an answer. Thanks for your honest opinion in all of your reviews. #Vice
you know the old saying matt you get what you pay for. and on that note still any of the 3 would be a up gread for me....lol . still use the one that come with my oasis pedestal base very plain...but hey when i got it 15 years ago and did not use it till 2020....lol thanks matt for video #vise
You're welcome Robert! And while I don't tie a ton on my Maxcatch, it's always been pretty easy to work on. PS: check your spelling and change it to #vise. :-)
I bought the first vise in this list almost a year ago bassed on ur review from before and I love it .... I almost bought the maxcatch but it was a little more and i couldnt get it shipped to Canada thanks
Thanks for the review videos Matt. My brother just took up fly fishing after seeing my excitement for it and now he wants to start tying. If I win one of these it will go to him. #vise
The Maxcatch is the bomb! Thanks to Matt I picked this one up, and 43 dollars was very well spent. My dad (a mechanical engineer) was very impressed with the overall quality of aluminum, and pretty decent machining. The clamp is great, great holding power, and pretty easy use. Only con for the price is a little tiny wobble.
Thanks Nolan; I appreciate the feedback! The engineering some of these overseas companies can pull off really is impressive sometimes. As for the little wobble on the Maxcatch, I have one myself, have given two away and have one more to give out so I've actually had four in my hands. I only noticed the wobble in one of them. Now they do come with two sizes of rubber O-rings but I've never explored where you might put them or really where they may be needed.
Thanks for your review like always they are great I have been watching you since I started tying in November thanks for all your help at 66 I have learned a lot from you you are a true teacher have a great day #vise
Thank you Matt for your honest review of these vises. As always a pleasure to watch your posts !! Also thank you for you generosity and giving back to all of us who enjoy your channel . Have a great week to everyone! #Vise
Thanks for the review Matt any of those three vices would make a great back up vice or it’s nice to have a good spare for teaching step by step to beginners. #vice
