Pintos are cheap in the US because that bean grows well in most of the country. I think its from zones 3-11, so most every state. Plus most varieties are multi-purpose. They can be eaten a both green beans & dried beans. I love pintos, they are my favorite type of bean. I even like them mashed with a little mayo and chopped onion and spread on bread to make a sandwich.

One thing that I is drink water with just a splash of juice in it. That may work as a compromise for some or a transition idea.

My husband is also meat and potatoes guy and doesn't like vegetables. It's a challenge. We have a garden and I preserve by dehydrating, fermenting mostly. I don't like to can because heating up food destroys the vitamins and good properties. I also buy some bulk items. We have an LDS warehouse near us that we can buy bulk items for cheaper than you can buy other places. I don't belong to that church but it's available to the public. Thanks for the meatless meals ideas. We do baked potatoes with different toppings too.

How about starting a small aquaponics in your apartment? It’s easy. You can you tube some videos on how to start it on a very small scale! My father used to do it in a little back room off his bedroom. He grew lettuce, tomatoes, basil, beans!!

I make pizza dough in a bread maker- top with passata and ANY scraps or leftover meat. Frozen sweetcorn. Very cheap. Also cut and freeze those last two slices of ham in a pack as toppings, or leftover sausages- chop those fine and fry in chilli powder.

It is really easy to make your own rehydration drinks from stuff in your own kitchen - you don't even have to spend money to buy them! Litereally water, sugar and salt, with some fruit juice for flavour (l use lemon juice because the citric acid improves absorption of the electrolyte in the salt...) The recipe that the health authority puts out for diarrhea or vomiting or when people are working outside in hot temperatures is: 4 cups (l litre) water 3/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp salt substitute like no-salt (optional but does add potassium - but if you add some orange juice for flavour you are adding potassium!) 2 tbsp sugar (Adds energy and increases absorption of the electrolytes - you could probably sub this with things like maple syrup or honey if you really do not want to use sugar, but you do need the simple, sugars, the carbs to increase the absorption) optional flavourings like crystal lite or a dash of fruit juice... I use citrus juice for the vitamin C, and if you use orange juice you are adding potassium which is a vital electrolyte! It seriously works out so much cheaper than buying other rehydration stuff because we have all this stuff in our kitchens all the time! And you can make it up as you want it as well so it is much more convenient!

QUESTION!! Speaking of frugality…I was pressure canning 10 quarts of mixed veggies. My son bumped the stove and the weight tipped and let out pressure and steam for 20 seconds. I couldn’t get it back to a constant pressure afterwards. I turned the stove off. So they never got processed (only for 30 min). Can I pull them out of canner after they cool down and leave them on counter to cool fully and then reprocess in morning (so 12 hrs later)? Or, do I have to put them in refrigerator over night and then reprocess? If so how do I warm up the jars from the refrigerator? Should I change the lids as well? Or should I just give it all to the chickens? It organic veggies, so I would really love to be able to keep them, as they were pricey!!
@foodprepguide
@foodprepguide 22 дня назад
They need to go in the refrigerator overnight, then reprocess tomorrow. Regarding warming up tomorrow, I would dump all the jars in a pot now, and put the whole pot in the refrigerator overnight. Then bring the pot out, let it come to room temperature, then put it on the stove, heat them up, and re-jar. As for the lids, that's your call. I personally would feel comfortable reusing those same lids as they're practically new, but I guess there is some risk that some jars wouldn't seal, so it's just a judgment call. 🤷‍♀️

What a great idea to do homemade electrolytes! I need to do that. Several years ago, we made a drink that was ACV, coconut water, Celtic salt, and acerole cherry (vitamin C) powder. I’m not sure why we stopped. 🤔 Need to get back to it!

Finally, after the 3rd try i got to watch your video. Been an active day here. Thank you so much for common sense info! We do a lot of that already. I just dont know what people are going to do that dont even have a clue about what could happen to put them in a bad way. If they've gotten their news from tv, they probably just think they will be taken care of by the government. Sad.
