These tips are great. All the videos i watch and these tips are crucial. Timing is everything. Cant seem to ever get them down though and am leaking yardage bad. Don't get to practice that much.
Excuses for not hitting it long: 49 year Office worker, family man weekend warrior. Oh I also live in Canada. Really though the main reason for not hitting long i think for me is fear. I have been working with my Pro. to control my swing and find more fairways. When I let go I get booming slices and duck hooks. I guess I just need to rty new stuff and don't take it to the course until it is solid.
Hi there. It may not be an excuse, it really does depend on your physical capability and you have to have a certain baseline of strength to hit far. The obvious way we know this is true is because men hit it further than women on average. Lockey shouldn't be trying to sell it as anyone can do it - some, not all, and only if you put the physical work in, raw distance is not a question of technique for the most part.
Hi David! I’m also in Canada. You mentioned fear in your sentiment which I totally understand because I purposely swing my clubs slow. What has helped me to move past the fear is practicing certain drills in your swings which give you the most discouragement. My weaknesses include early extension and lack of flexibility. I’m 42 and have a history of pain problems, so I know my limits. Hope this helps
I’m also the exact same height/weight. Do you rock a standard driver? Mine is currently 44.25 TaylorMade M3 driver. I’m looking for more distance and consistent contact like everyone else. Is it worth cutting down my driver?
I just had back fusion surgery, any thoughts on getting a turn with fusion? Same fusion Tiger had with a cheaper surgeon. I can't start swinging again until late April.
I avoided fusion, after a 2.5 yr 'lay-off' been back playing 10 years. Wasn't easy, constant stretching, Losr 20m on drives and recovered from 2 clubs more to only 1with irons. Accept that and the fact yr handicap will 'blow-out' or you'll b 4ever frustrated. I use a back inverter for 'maintenance'.
Just went to a pro event. 58 year olds hitting it 324 yards total with what looks like zero effort. I'm so curious how. I'll swing so hard and barely get 280 total in the sweet spot. Makes no sense.
This is why 95% of golfers are hackers. Because of “straight jacket” golf instructors who basically wrap us up in a straight jacket snd twist us into pretzels and say now you should be able to swing freely and hit like tiger. We dont know how to use the tool so we end up being plagued by chunks on the course. Nobody has to teach us to use a hammer and after 1 day we all can hit the nail in the middle of the head. If we knew how to use the tool we could add all the power we wanted.
I think I need tip 4 .Have a very big turn ,lift foot been doing split drill for years . On a summers day I can get 235. Stuck at 95mph driver 82mph iron .
thanks for the video just subbed, been stuck at 200 yards for ages, ''ages'' i say, only started playing around december though but something is for sure off with me and these tips look pretty spot on. Its amazing how often tips for extra yardage almost always include going against what you are typically shown how to play golf, like... i didn't even consider keeping my back leg straight for more rotation, it just goes against everything ive been told to this point which is keeping that slight bend in the legs. I know there is more yardage in me because im a pretty big strong fella, comfortably 50kg on you but it goes to show you how much you can lose from poor technique. thanks again cant wait to put these tips into practice.
This is awesome… And you’re 100% right about the hands. I was never that good at skipping stones so that whipping motion isn’t as natural to me sometimes… Love the tips and drill ideas bruh!!! Appreciate you Coach!
I'm 6'4, 220LB's, fast, and strong. And, I can tell you that RANGE OF MOTION (flexibility) is VASTLY MORE IMPORTANT than strength/quickness in golf. (For generating power.)
If you raise your lead heel raise a bit, that will help with longterm back pain. Fred couple, Tiger, kept tgat lead foot planted and they deal with back pain
It doesn't really matter how tall or heavy your are. By far, the most important part of hitting a golf ball well is KNOWING WHAT DIRECTION TO SWING THE CLUB. And no, a circle is not a direction. By trying to swing in a circle, as most people are attempting to do, it's nearly impossible to get the speed into the club when and where we need it. Humans think in linear terms and although this idea seems counter-intuitive, there is literally no way to swing a club that doesn't result in a circular arc no matter how linear you attempt to swing it. The golf club is an amazing tool of engineering when used properly. It’s a lever, not a stick, like a baseball bat.
I find if I focus more on a smooth swing I hit it worse. I just go hell for leather and smash it as hard as I can and it works out better. Zero swing thoughts when on the course, I just hope what I’ve been practising carries over
My excuses for not hitting 300+ yards: I am an office worker, family man and live in Canada. So I can only practice once a week and my playing season is short. However my main reason for not hitting long is fear. I have taken lessons and have gotten my wild banana slice and duck hooks to be fairway finders. My Pro. and I have focussed on accuracy. I feel when I try to really let go and swing out of my shoes as it were I get wild again. Which I guess is part of the learning process. I will give your tips a go. I have also seen some other long driver tips that might help as well.
Can`t wait to give this a try NOW! My biggest problem is distance off the tee, which makes my approach shots much harder. I`m counting on your advice Coach 🙂
Doesn't work. Still only carrying it 220 yards and I am the same size as you. I don't think I am releasing the club properly. Can you do a video on that?
Just stop with the fantasy! If it was all so easy then why is the average driving distance on the PGA (the very best golfers in the world) less than 300 yards????? This delusion is repeated and just about every online coaches video channel and it is utter bunkum. I think any coaching licence should be revoked to anyone who trots out this drivel.
239 carry and 250 total on your previous shot history, nice. It's always good to see short hitters pretend to be long by not showing the rest of the data like club speed, ball speed, smash factor, spin, etc.. I've also never seen a foresight spit out the data that fast. Stop lying to the people
You might be short and skinny, but you're such a lovely boy! 😂 In all seriousness, these are good drills. A good feeling for tip 3 if you don't have a Lag Shot is to use a towel instead of a golf club and try to snap it through in a full swing, snapping at the bottom. A late release will slice spin, and an early release will hook spin.
The one thing you guys always forget is, it takes natural coordination to put all of these tips that you find easy into place, for the mere mortal golfer who already struggles with consistency implementing new so called tips /instruction can be very soul destroying if they can not get them to make a difference.
Tip 3 is the worst one, so difficult to implement as i can't go buy coordination in the shop :) for you other golfers struggling with mobility and desk/office job as I have.....go do yoga and pilatis 2-3 times a week. I am 54 and never been more flexible than now. Hip and shoulder turn is no issue, and compared to last season i gained +20 yards with driver, so now i got a carry of 230y and total 245y, increased clubhead speed and ball striking since i started yoga....so tip 4.....do yoga instead of gym :)
I am 5'8" and am OLD and FAT, and my body is worn out from being in the automotive field for 46 years .....LOL Aint nothing going to get me more clubhead speed😜
From there you can refine how you deliver the club. Without all the bullshit vernacular, think of trying to hit a very low inside pitch over the wall of a baseball stadium. Voila. You're hitting the golf ball hard and fast.
This was just perfect, thanks. I only have 80 yds to go to get to 305. And at 62 its a different experience with the turning part. Should have gone for yoga instead of football 50 years ago.
Great summary CoachL. I've been working hard on these very concepts this winter and have seen new speeds and distance from them! Enjoy your vids a great deal, and this one feels spot on for me!
Stop. Immediately. Do not teach this to people. Moving your right hip moves your spine. Please don’t tell people to do that. Keeping your spine straight is the key to hidden good golf shots. You might be able to hit a 300 yards, but that’s about it.
Interesting! Apart from having a desk job for 40 years+, I'm now 68 years old, 5'10", 110kgs, replacement left hip, and arthritis! Apart from lose some weight(!) have you any specific tips that might help me (current driver speed 80mph, and I hit it 190 yards, using a ladies shaft)? Second question. Would it help to start with my right hip back (i.e. a closed stance, effectively, or would that make no difference?
So I watched your video and found it quite interesting. The straightening of your back leg is new. Question: Given that there is supposed to be a transfer of weight from the lead foot to the inside of the back foot on the back swing, how does one use the back leg to start the transfer of the weight and momentum from the back leg to the front leg? Also, I have tried to lengthen my back swing as per your video and find that I can't seem to hit it any farther than if I use a shorter swing...even when I hit it on the screws. Why would this be and how would I correct this? Thanks. Again...interesting video. Thanks for posting.
Lots of tips to keep Right/trail leg slightly bent, but if you don't rotate your hip more to the target it doesn't matter. Your tip is right on for 80% of golfers, straighten the leg to prevent slide, more turn and the ability to put more force in the lead leg earlier in the swing. When you finally fix those starting errors then you may be ready to keep a little bend. Thoughts?
Tip 3 is so advanced, no wonder you find it hard. Does it involve feeling the hands really accelerating hard down to P6 then the swing just freewheels from there. I know it’s the final cog in the wheel of a trebuchet catapault. What to you feel, having done the split hand drill then the real swing feel to replicate the hand deceleration.
I’ve seen a guy snap a new Titliest driver shaft doing the split hand drill. He was a tall, big dude but still, be wary. Damn, you really gut me inspired Coach to push my next practice session. Thanks.
At times taking a wedge off the tee when driver & irons not working Oh yes there’s been many times by say the 13th tee I’ve resorted to hit 3 or 4 wedges just to actually get a ball to a green 😂
Alright bro I’m gunna try that tonight at home. That last tip really has me interested where you say you slow your hands on the downswing, I think I’m a handle holder for too long in my swing. Shanks! 😁
I’ve already followed your earlier tips on release/hand path/swinging the butt of the club (I realised I was swinging my body, not the club head) and also the extra hip turn after your lesson with Shaheen, Oh, and the ‘no backswing’ drill (that one, for me, is an absolute game changer). So I thought I’d improved on the range. I took it to the course on Tuesday and consistently drove the ball an extra 30 yards carry (120 max to an easy 150). As a 58 year old female golfer I think that’s pretty good! 😲 Now I’m going to try the last tip in this video, and see if I can squeeze a few more out. I’m 5’11” and 65Kg, but I’ve never understood how to use my height and flexibility before and actually transfer my effort to the ball. Can’t thank you enough, Coach. I wish I still lived in Devon and could come to you for an actual lesson, or at least thank you in person! 😎
Summer where I am and my goal at the beginning of summer was to break par. I'm a 7.6 hcp. I went out recently and was -4 on the front nine with 4 straight birdies to end the nine and thought I was on course to achieve my goal. BUT! Back nine, the driver abandoned me. Started hitting high, weak slices. Like 40-50m shorter (and to the right) of my normal drives. I'm normally a pull drawer and kind of rely on that. I guess I got inside my own head. So I went to the range the next day, driving was back to normal. But out on the course the following day. Driving was weak and to the right again! Any thoughts on the mental aspect? I can't afford a psychiatrist 🤣
Great stuff coach. Man you hit that puppy a long way for such a little guy......or perhaps your camera is lying to us as in real life you are 6'2", 130Kg and built like David. Must be to hit 300 +. 😂
I just watched a video about keeping your right leg bent and never locking it out. It also causes way too much left knee flexion and instability. I love how every RU-vid golf video contradicts the other 😖
I have found swimming and yoga really helps to loosen up the swing and become much more flexible.. also a hot shower Before a round or practice.. works for me !
Hey Coach... been practicing up with 1 range time outing and foamplastic in the backyard filled with snow. I've been lifting up that left foot, I used to, not sure why I got away from it but definitely getting more pop, my head stays on the plane, and noticing more pop and even ho Itting straighter. Thanks for the tip.
Coach, thanks for the video! Help me with getting too steep on the downswing, I constantly work on it with drills but can't find a drill to change my ways.
When I have tried to rotate as per your instructions I find it very hard to hut the ball consistently. Is this just a practice thing? Very hard to figure that out in a message I know 😢
My pro is getting me to work on transferring weight onto my lead side earlier and getting the hips to rotate better, literally focusing on lower half so much more, because that's where the power is created.
@@CoachLockey Gotta watch this one a few more times, I think I coukd squeeze out a few more yards. Quick question, what's better for distance? Carry or roll out?
@@jerryturner2310 I suggest you take your own advice. I quote 'In the UK, the average man is considered relatively tall compared with the other countries in the world. According to 2022 data1, the average height for men here is 178.2 cm - this is equal to 5 ft 10.4 in' I am 6ft, I suspect you are much shorter, no? :)
When you say ‘ slow your hands ‘ do you mean slow your arms as well ? Or swing arms as fast as possible but don’t release hands until a certain point in the downswing?
Sorry Lockey but this is irresponsible messaging. You are setting up a lot of your viewers for complete failure. Raw distance is limited by physical capability. We know this is true at the most basic level because on average men hit it further than women - why, not technique, it's because men are on average bigger and stronger. If you look at the data there is a clear correlation between height, weight, grip strength and distance. There is a negative correlation with age and distance - the older you get the shorter you hit it - why - muscle atrophy. Again, facts. The questions I'd ask you are - you may be slim, but how toned/fit are you? What is your grip strength in each hand? At what age did you start playing golf? How much of that muscle and movement in those hips have been defined and toned over years of training. The tips themselves are ok but they're not going to make you hit it any further than you're physically capable.
You are responsible for your own actions. The advice he gives is good that, especially when you get older, if you want to get distance then you need to allow your hips to turn more. If that is fysically not possible then you just found a limitation.
@@amfohr As I said above, the tips are ok, but if you genuinely believe they will make the difference between carrying 225 and carrying 300 then you are certifiably insane.
I don't expect everyone to hit it 300 yards! its the boring youtube thumbnail and title games you have to play and when i say "whats your excuse" it is humour and sarcasm. But I do hope these tips help everyone hit it a little further than they already do. Thanks for your comments and interactions as always though Lockey Army 👍😘
