It may look like a good idea to weld in the lathe but it's a very quick way to ruin the headstock bearings. The striking up of the Arc on the workpiece brings up a corresponding Arc on the earth lead circuit at any point that is not in firm contact between the welding set and the earth point on the workpiece. As a machine tool fitter I've changed a number of set of very expensive headstock bearings because of this stupid practice. If you have to Arc weld components held in the lathe at least put the earth clamp directly on to the workpiece.
