#5 A band that had two major hits a ballad and a rocker that helped their first two albums go platinum plus with a singer who tragically passed away at just 47 years of age. Warrant came on to the scene in with a lot to prove having been turned down by many labels. Their first release is our hidden gem ”Down Boys” was the first single of of their 1989 debut Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich in ’89.
#4 The 4th single from the epic 1989 album Dr. Feelgood, One of those famous parentheses songs.. Motley Crue’s Don’t Go Away Mad (just go away) Bassist Nikki Sixx, and lead guitarist Mick Mars co-authored this ’tongue in cheek’ tune about dealing with a breakup by focusing on the good times of a relationship. If you subscribe to the karmic philosophy that ‘all things must pass,’ why not dwell on the good times you experienced together, instead of being consumed by hurt and anger when the inevitable happens? It’s much healthier way to sever the ties, and I’m sure for Motley Crue, a guilt-free way to play the field.. if you can get your ex to buy into it…..
#3 A band that would figure into the great mainstream metal take over of 1989 where it seemed like every week on the charts there were at least 2 or 3 metal song in the Billboard top 10. Great White is best know for their cover of Once Bitten Twice but my hidden gem choice here is “Rock Me,” which was the breakout track for Great White in 1987
at #2 a band that Great White Guitarist Mark Kendall was influenced by Dokken with ”In My Dreams” by Many including Mark Kendall claimed that Dokken lead guitarist, George Lynch, started two-hand tapping before Eddie Van Halen did, although Lynch, himself, denies it. There is no disputing, however, that George Lynch is a revered guitarist, especially during the Glam Metal Era.
and at #1 a band that’s first two album were as good as any band on the scene and one of my favorite songs of the year 1989.
“Coming Home” was released as the 3rd single from Cinderella’s 2nd studio LP Long Cold Winter from 1988, following their triple platinum debut Night Songs. Although the band was making a calculated move to evolve their sound, its the combination of the minimalist, bluesy beginning of the track, and the transition into Keifer’s distinctive growling for the chorus that gives makes “Coming Home” such a special song. I want to talk about that for a second.

When I bought my first guitar I remember asking the sales guy at the shop "How can I sound like George Lynch?", not knowing anything about how to achieve guitar tone. Last year, my son, who got his second guitar from the exact same shop btw, told me (without me knowing what he really liked in guitar sounds) "I want my guitar to sound like that song 'In My Dreams'". I quietly shed a tear lol.

The “hair” metal genre was so underrated when it came to ability to play , especially the guitar slingers . Warren Dimartini of Ratt , John Sykes playing on Whitesnake , Young Zak , Jake E Lee with Ozzy , Slash and Izzy , Ritchie Sambora ... I got my first guitar in 89 .

Cinderella - Long Cold Winter and Heartback Station are two amazing albums, blues/country/metal with dobro, slide guitar, 12 string etc They were totally distinct from other metal bands of the era and the music on those albums to me stands the test of time. Tom Kiefer had six vocal chord surgeries and was told he would never sing again but managed overcome adversity and put out new music. He's also a very underated guitar player.

Motley Crue "You're All I Need" is a fav of mine but severely underrated/forgotten. It hasn't been performed live, the music video was deemed "too violent", AND "Girls Girls Girls" over took it. So I see why it's been left. It's honestly some of Vince's best work, it's rugged but oddly angelic. Hope someone sees this comment!

see my above post. this list is awful. ALL HUGE songs that everyone knows immediately, and no one forgot for a second. and definitely none of the =m are "hidden gems" IN MY DREAMS??!! are you kidding me??? Even though i dont believe its dokkens best song, its 100 percent their biggest hit and the song they are most known for. this is either the worst list ever made or worst title ever made. cant wait to see his classic rock hidden gems list. feel like making love , more than a feeling, and stairway to heaven?
@sgsultana

I think in terms of mainstream, it is fair for POR to say these are forgotten. Not everyone has continued to listen to these as you or I have. Certainly not as many as listen as did back then. Maybe could have been phrased a bit differently as my first thoughts with that title are to bands like Kingdom Come, House of Lords, Shark Island, Tora Tora, Bonham, … But I realize those are truly obscure to most.

Great White and Cinderella were a fantastic staple for blues rock. Enjoyed them as a teen. As an adult, I've realized how much i love blues music from previous decades and with that, the realization of why I enjoyed those groups so much. For me, they've stood out to be the most pleasurable to listen to even now, especially Cinderella as so many of their lyrics had relatable material that is still relevant today. I will say this was probably the loudest show I've seen and I didn't bring ear plugs, so there were several times I had to walk out of the club to stop the pain in my ears. I wish I had come prepared because he was on fire for sure. I think he finished with "A Little Help From My Friends" (which was not played at such a high level) and I was back in the building comfortably to enjoy that. His voice was so strong, you'd have never known he had those vocal cord operations mentioned in the video. I've not heard "Rise", but I think I better check it out!

In 1988, my college roommate and I bought tickets to see AC/DC in Roanoke, VA. The opener was Cinderella. My roomie was a HUGE fan, and I wasn't into them at all. There's countless hidden gems, especially in hair metal. These are some great ones. Down Boys is Warrant at their best. Rock Me is one of my favorite Great White songs and they have waaay better stuff like this one than their cover of Ian Hunter's tune. Dokken also has Breaking the Chains, Don't Close Your Eyes (not the Kix hit), Tooth and Nail, Lightning Strikes Again, Kiss Of Death, and so many classics. Cinderella is also underrated just like the other three bands. Night Songs is an excellent debut album. I also love Ratt, Skid Row, Stryper, and so much more.

Guitar Player magazine had an open poll for the best guitar solo of the year. It was a fill-in-the-blank question, not a multiple choice with options given. I wrote in George Lynch for "In My Dreams" and he won! I remember at the time thinking he won because of me. Ha ha! But, man, I could listen to the solo over and over again - and I did, wearing out the tape in the process. In any case it was a well deserved award. That solo has so many of the iconic techniques that define what makes George so unique: it's well composed with slow and wide bends, pinch harmonics, staccato riffs, that weird harmonic minor note he hits, and of course, blistering fast runs. It is an amazing display of music that still amazes me to this day.

From the bigger bands, The More Things Change by Cinderella is up there. I loved seeing Warrant on here. Loved this episode!! I saw Warrant open up for Motley Crue in 1989. In the past 5 years, I have seen Jack Russell's Great White, Don Dokken, Lynch Mob, and Tom Kieffer, mostly at the M3 Festival in Maryland. This countdown brought back many great memories from high school and college. Thanks Professor!!🎸🎸

Great call on Cinderella. By their 3rd album, Heartbreak Station, they had really moved into the blues. Love that album. Keifer is an underrated singer. Well done. When are you going to start your own Sirius XM station?

I’m a fan of 80s rock. Have to agree with Eddie Trunk calling it “hair bands” or n e thing to do with hair is an insult to the music. It’s classic rock to me. Luv: Dio, TNT, Triumph,, Tesla, Warrant, Y & T.....

Eddie trunk one said the scorpions should be considered a “hairless band.” LOL

@@collo5351 and he is still going.. unfortunately he is the last remaining original member alive. I saw Y&T open up for Dio at the Mid-Hudson Civic center in Poughkeepsie. They were phenomenal. I ran into Ronnie before the show. He was really down to earth and appreciated his fans.

I’m glad I got the chance to see this video. Forgot about these great songs. I love every song from dr. Feelgood and coming home is a great song. I remember how excited I was to get my dr. Feelgood cassette tape. The memories are irreplaceable. Thanks Professors of Rock. Love my Zenni glasses.

I went to Mona Lake and the old west ghost town Bodie California specifically because Cinderella filmed their video "Dont Know What You Got Till Its Gone" there.

Enjoyed the Kendall interview. "Rock Me" as the song that got me into Great White. I like the bluesy feel. LOVE Dokken!!! They don't get played enough period! "In My Dreams" is the ultimate metal/hard rock video! I liked Cinderella's Long Cold Winter better than Night Songs, even though I liked that one as well. It was almost like a different band, with a much more bluesy and laid back approach."Shelter Me" was another great one! As for more hidden gems, I feel like Tesla has almost become a forgotten band. My favorite from them would be "Gettin' Better," but there are so many great songs from them! Blue Murder is another great band from the era that would have been much bigger, had they had more support from their record label. Thanks, Prof!

Back then I was sure that bands like Blue Murder and Badlands (and a few more), who had such awesome debut albums, would ensure the genre stayed popular for quite a while longer. I was wrong.
