Hopeless. My old 94 ranger with a fuel injected 2.3 litre 4 with factory header hemispheracle head 2 spark plugs per cylinder made plenty of horse power. The truck handled like it was on rails. The bed was low enough and 6' in length. I pulled around my 7' x12' trailer no problem. I had fresh cut locust logs piled 5' high on the trailer and the truck pulled it fine. No I'm not going 70 but I'm not an idiot and don't need or want to go that fast with a load. Had the rear frame not rotted away I would still be driving it. So now I have rebuilt a 1977 f150 4x4 and also a 1985 f150 4x4. I will never buy anything new again. I can build better performance than this new crap with after market performance parts for a tenth the money of this new factory crap. 40000 dollars or less is what I pay for the houses I rebuild and flip not a truck. For twenty grand I can build a truck that will out pull out work any of this new absolute crap. Who needs all those cup holders and fancy sound systems in a work truck. You need to have your engineers and designers go too work with people who really use a truck for its intended purpose not a bunch of yuppies and soccer mom's who cracked up their car's and now want to be the biggest thing on the road. To charge 30- 40 - 50- 60 -70 thousand and more for a pickup truck is sinful. In fact all these new vehicles are way over priced and your deliberately making them so the can not be serviced by the owner. Good luck there are plenty of folks that have had enough. The unions the government need to get out of the transportation business. You fluff a vehicle up with all kinds of crash protection but at the same time put 300 plus hp engines in them. People are driving way to fast for road conditions. You braking systems that beat the racing brake of just a few short years ago. So people Sprint about at speeds that their attention level and driving skill levels aren't even close to being part with. And with all fancy video and sound devices to even further detract divers. Did I say drivers? Most people are just plodding along for the ride pointing the vehicle hammering the gas and brakes like drunken chimpanzees. While they chatter about nonsense on their cell phones. I used to drive a fuel tanker now Im nervous just leaving my driveway. You all want to lose the privilege and freedom to drive your own vehicles where and when you want. Keep buying this expensive junk till no one can afford it. That's the plan then the uber government driver less cars will be your only choice. And they won't be cheap but you won't own them or have free instant access to them. But your tax dollars will be funding them.

Absolutely love my 6mo old '19 Ranger XLT FX4 crew cab.. black on black. Everywhere I stop ..ppl compliment & ask bout it. Assembly quality /fit & finish are top notch. The powertrain Is exquisite .. best in class by a long shot. This Is what Ford Motor Co excels at.. trucks & SUVs! This new Ranger Is no exception. Im @10k mis & its only getting better. Soon acquiring the Fox 2.0 shock upgrade kit & Ford Performance tune. Already a sporty & quick truck.. should be a blast even more so. No auto-maker is ever going to make a small truck like the old ranger ever again. Safety requirements by the government means large crumple zones. MPG requirements mean big swooping body panels that make the vehicle more aerodynamic. And the only people paying 40K for a ranger are those who don't care about money and want heated, massaging seats with a big fancy sound system. You folks acting like this is the only version seem to completely ignore the XL version which is the same vehicle with the same engine, but nearly half the price.

I have one and love it. The oil change is soo easy, everyone has been complaining but it isn't bad.. To get to the filter all you do is turn your wheels to the right remove a flap and there the filter is unobstructed by wheel or any lines. then when you remove the filter the oil drains into a funnel that perfectly guides your oil to a container.
@erice8810
@erice8810 4 года назад
S.W. Wolf agree completely. I did end up removing the skid plate over the drain pan (4 x bolts) to save the mess. Also only pulled the top 3-4 tabs on the upper flap and folded it aside. Took less than 30 mins.

I dont think the problem is just oil changes. Ford Rangers have a terrible reliability rating. Dog and lemon give them 2 stars and a list as long as your arm of problems. Chassis twisting and cracking to the point they are now checked for cracks on safety inspections. Engine failures. Sensor failures. Transmission failures.

1. It's a small truck, the bed is going to be small. You also have the offroad package, making the truck higher up, so the bed is going to be higher. 2. For 40K the Lariat should have a dampener, yes. 3. The front tie-down can't be lower, or else the wheel-bump will be in the way. I'm pretty sure this is close to the standard tie-down configurations of pretty much all trucks. If you want more, you can literally put them in yourself. 4. No one uses select unless you're driving a sports car, and having paddle shifters on an automatic, non-sport car is idiotic, they'd be in the way 99% of the time, and be a huge annoyance. 5. Nearly all modern vehicles are going to be a pain in the ass to work on yourself, especially the engine bay thanks to federal regulations regarding safety, which make almost all vehicles pretty similar thanks to needing to implement crumple zones and the need to make vehicles sleeker and more aerodynamic for better MPG. The Lariat version is for people who don't really care about the cost. If you want to actually buy a truck on a budget, go for the XL with the 4x4/offroad and towing packages, it has the same capabilities as the Lariat but for 10-15K less. You won't have leather seats that massage you and ultra HD 581.9 surround sound speakers, but oh well. It's a truck.

"The front tie-down can't be lower, or else the wheel-bump will be in the way. I'm pretty sure this is close to the standard tie-down configurations of pretty much all trucks. If you want more, you can literally put them in yourself." That's why I wish more manufacturers would just put multiple tie downs in each corner. I see that the new GM half-tons have 3 in each corner. All trucks should have at least that many in their bed. But you point is a good one. The front tie downs wouldn't work if they were lower. This truck is overpriced no matter what. For $40k you can get a decent F-150 XLT, a Tacoma TRD Pro, or a Colorado ZR2. The features you get in the Ranger Lariat just don't justify that price tag. It's a small truck with an ok interior. For $10-15k more than the XL, I just don't see where that money went. I agree on all your other points.

Lighty honestly I think your way off on number 4. I agree it is dum to have them on a non sports orientated vehicle. But imo when they were developed (racing teams) they were designed for ease of use. To make shifting easier and more efficient.. taking your hands of the wheel etc. I have towed from time to time with my ecodiesel Grand Cherokee and now my hemi GC and I can tell ya when I’m coming down a pass and need to kick it down a gear to help maintain speed. It’s just a finger flick and both hands are firmly on the wheel vs reaching down for a shifter and trying to figure out its orientation. I just say don’t give them a bad rep until you try them.

A four cylinder pickup truck is not a desireable thing to begin. Add a turbo to a four cylinder engine, a traditionally very bad idea, and you have a nice little truck with a granade ready to explode under the bonnet. That little engine with a turbo will not last 150,000 miles. I am waiting for the diesel engine.

@@indridcold8433 So very true. This is why I keep my vehicles I have now that have been paid off for 20+ years, they're easy to work on if needed, and easy to do regular maintenance on when needed compared to the garbage they build today that is meant to be neglected or pay a fortune to have it serviced and repaired at a shop. They're not making parts for older vehicles like they used to forcing people who don't want a new vehicle to get a new vehicle because you can't get parts anymore. I for one hate the new stuff and don't want it at all. I don't need a vehicle with a knob to backup a trailer, or 20+ cameras to keep me from hitting another vehicle...that's what mirrors are for that people can't seem to grasp how to use because they're far too busy playing on their phone...or with new vehicles playing with the apps built into the damn vehicle....as if distracted driving wasn't a big enough issues as it was, automakers made it even worse adding those stupid nonsense in dash tablets.

I test drove one and I really like it. The problem is $40k for a truck is a lot to ask. I know Toyota is getting the same for a Tacoma, it's just that people's incomes all have not kept up with vehicle prices. The other thing is fuel economy. My 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD get better fuel economy on diesel than that and when towing my pop up camper which is close to his test load my highway fuel economy stays in the low 20s not 13mpg. On top of that it only has a 5 speed automatic. So while I like the truck I'm going to keep my Jeep and bank my coin until I have to buy a new vehicle. It's a nice truck but just not worth trading an old paid of vehicle that runs good for something new and pretty that costs so much to buy and uses more fuel.

With all due respect. First, I want to say nice looking truck. However, it's a truck not a Prius, I am absolutely shocked that people complain about the box being height when it's a truck, I just don't get the complaint. Secondly, it should not have paddle shifters. Those are for rice, burning foreign cars, not American vehicles. The shifting buttons are perfectly placed on the side of the shifter. Paddle shifters are fake unrealistic for "young kids" The Shifting button placement reminds me of driving a manual with them being on the side of the shifter. I personally think the tiedowns are perfectly placed, and a way to remedy that situation all together is put a really nice hard tunnel cover like a retracts pro. To change the oil, simply turn the wheels all the way to the passenger side. There is no reason to take the wheel off oil changes on these are extremely easy. Simply get an oil filter socket and a long extension piece of cake.

If you got the same manual we get in Australia you wouldn't want it, a crappy made in China box, that pretty much all fail before 100,000 Km. Must be rebuilt locally with proper bearings and bushes from real manufacturers - then its a reliable box. Australian buyers prefer the 6 speed 6R80 or the new 10 speed autos for this reason. Also the oil filter is in the same spot on our 2.2 and 3.2 four and five cylinder diesel models. To change turn the car to full right lock and then it's fairly easy to get to under the rubber flap. Must admit I would have preferred it up top somewhere.

I have a 2001 Ranger 4x4 XLT extended cab with 189,000 miles on the odometer. The 4.0 liter V6 is slippery smooth. In 2010, a tree fell on it during a storm and crushed the cab and put holes on the roof, dented the bonnet, crushed both the rear suicide doors, and dented one fender. It was a tragic day for me. I jacked up the roof so I can sit in it and sort of rounded it off so it looked sort of like a pickup truck cab, bent the rear suicide doors into enough shape so they worked, siliconed the holes in the roof, changed the bent lead spring, and she was road worthy once more. She runs and drives like new, though she looks like armageddon hit her. But I love the smooth engine. I will not be buying the new Ranger until a worthy engine is put into it. I love the look. Real world MPG's on this ecobust are around 16-18 MPG combined. You have to drive 55 mph on a flat terrain (without wind) to get the mileage from this. In short, you MUST keep the motor out of boost to get anything decent. Under boost, its looking like this motor takes allot of gas. Even for a turbo. Much more so then my 2.0 bi turbo in my BMW that actually gets the rated MPG without even trying 23 city 30 Hwy. At this point, Ford is lying. And the eco is a gimmick at best. My Nissan's VQ40 24 valve DOHC gets about the same as this so called best in class ecobust. And that is the PRO 4X model with 31 inch all terrain tires.

I said how much can he wrong with a truck with low mileage and age. She told me it cost her $1500 for a new Timing chain....she told me that the Early EcoBoost V6 had one long chain driving both camshafts...so her b/f 's nephew works at the local dealer where she lives and gave her a break on labour to change the timing chain....a timing chain should not fail if one changes oil regularly. I know Toyota trucks are hard on gas BUT I would rather pay more in fuel and a hell of a lot less on repairs. My Tacoma has needed so very little repairs...I do need new rear springs...Tacoma has iffy leaf springs BUT the motor and transmission is absolutely bulletproof. I already have nearly 150 000 kms on my truck and it is almost perfect...so close to it.

@@mikefoehr235 I agree. Bought a Nissan Frontier Pro 4X myself. Old design but prefer the VQ40 24 valve DOHC V6 over the third gen's 3.5 with active learning transmission. And they did have allot of issues with that back in 2015/16. Better now but the damn thing searches gears and shifts too early. Test drove a limited and couldn't stand the shift points. Tried again with an offroad thinking it was just a isolated problem. Nope, the second test confirmed it (both 19 models so I scratched the taco off the list). The Frontier only has a 5 speed OD but it's a great tune. Lots of torque and the shift points are more inline with how the Japanese made 4runner is. But then again, it still uses their 4.0 liter with a 5 speed as well. I prefer the old school trucks over the new. The Tundra is also a great truck. Bullet proof and hasn't been updated in years. Yes Ford did fix the ecoboosts. They had no choice. The F150 is their bread and butter. If they continued with the issues they might as well take a chapter 7 and be done with it.

The 4hi/low cuts into the drivers leg right leg, uncomfortable. 3) Pedals, brake and gas are way to close together, I accidently hit the gas while braking 60% of the time. 4) Power delivery delay. The delay between the gas pedal and takeoff it feels like forever. 5) Very basic bed... no power 12v. without kit. Extra credit) Radio sounds awful. Not a fan. After owning and trading in after 6 months Verdict: Though offroad capable with decent towing, the lack luster ride, awful comfort quality, poor features, and tight cab space... it ruins a truck that has a great exterior look. I just test drove all the midsized. The Ranger: It was weird. It was a pretty truck, and a bit more comfortable seating. It did feel more like a Ford in the cockpit. The little 4 cylinder Ecoboost with that transmission is notchy. You can feel all ten gears. It feels like a stutter. I don’t know how they did it but Ford managed to replicate the driving experience of a ’72 Lincoln Continental. It sways to and fro. When you steer, the truck kind of catches up sometime. It’s like a vehicle without sway bars or shock absorbers. It’s like the tires are ten pounds low on air. Here’s the funny part, when you stomp on the gas, you get this killer V-8 sound… FROM THE SPEAKERS! Yup, they put fake engine noise in the cab to make you feel better. Where they screwed up on the Ranger is they could have made a nice suspension from the Raptor guys and slapped that V-6 ecoboost in it. Oh man, that would be a hotrod! (one I’d want) The Canyon is tight, yet comfortable. The seats are a bit firmer than the Ranger. The interior of the Canyon is nicer for sure. The Colorado is a bit Fisher Pricey. The engine feels SNAPPY compared to the Ranger heck it has 308 horsepower. All around, the Canyon feels so much nicer to drive. So, we bought one.

I work for a mechanic shop in Michigan and let me say we get a ton of Fords with a a lot of engine, pcm and transmission issues. Some of Fords engines are not very good and I’m talking about from factory which is a shame. The only good engines Ford have at the moment are the 3.5L, 5.0L and 6.7 power stroke other then that the rest are shit. The 1.5 eco boost is a tin can engine the 2.7 is the same 3.3 and 3.0 are horrible as well. Chevy’s and Dodges are honestly making better engines at the moment. Toyota builds great engines and everything else but their truck body’s are junk. So this is obviously what I see most of the time somebody else’s opinion or experience can be different. I’m not bashing Ford btw I drive one. They should’ve never changed their engine materials to what they have now. If it wasn’t broke why fix it? Lol

I would like to see the 3.7L V6 they were putting in the Mustang 2010-2016 paired with a 7-Speed Manual, or 8-Speed automatic transmission in any with the towing package. Not that I distrust the 2.3L i4, but a turbo is not a replacement for displacement. The 3.7L paired with either of those transmissions would be roughly comparable to the i4 in a lot of way, but you get all the torque without any of the delay.

You can configure a diesel turbo truck with 4x4 for 50k what the f is this pricing. A ranger will resell for $10k A diesel will resell for at least half of what you paid or it. Ranger is low cost this truck should be fully loaded $10k and I could see slightly more for the lariat.

I'm 62. I've been a Ford man through and through since forever. '66 Mustang fastback, '69 Mach 1, pickups from the '40's through the early '70's. Bought a brand new '77 fully loaded 3/4 ton 4x4 pickup for $6000. Bought a new Ranger 4x4 in 1986 for $11,000. A two wheeler in 2008 for $8,000. My point is is that I don't know who can afford a $35,000+ Ranger these days. There are something like 6 million new cars in America that have not been sold. I'd offer 'em 15 grand for one and then just walk out when they laughed at me.

I've got 15000 thousand invested in parts and I've done all my own work on them. I will continue to make upgrades and improvements down the road. Hope someone at ford wakes up and realizes we need the old work truck not the new fangled crap.

Perhaps the uk model is different. But is gutless unlike the 2-5 Navara that will pull like a train so for pulling power I bought the bigger engine. There is wind noise at speed and if you do a hard turn and drop into a pot hole the noise scares the shit out of you and although I like it I don’t feel as safe in it than I did in the Navara , the drive is very light for a pickup and at least it doesn’t look like the wife’s pickup to pick the kids up from school which is how the Nissan now looks.

I had 5 rangers ranging from 1996-2004 . I wouldn't buy this truck. The turbo charger 4 bagger. It's going to have major problems with the turbos and most likely the direct injection carb issues all the other eco-boost engines are having. And with a 3500 pound towing capability is lack luster to even the old generation ranger. Just doesn't scream buy me at 24k stripped and in 31k F150 range almost for a fluffed up one.

Base model 20k, midtier V6 25k and fully decked out Offroad with locking diff 31k... downsides of the Frontier? slightly less towing and slightly less hp & mpg. savings of 10k or more will offset that mpg difference for YEARS. I bought one last week and I love it. It is just my size, and I still have my F150 if I need to haul or tow something really big. I will say, I also notice the off shake or vibration, especially at speed or trying to accelerate hard. Not sure what that is. I would take it in, but the dealer we have does not have the brightest bulbs for mechanics, I barely trust them to change the oil. I am not a fan of the tires, for $40k, could we not have gotten some Good Year? Seriously, Hankook is a cheap Chinese tire, I would rather have something made in the USA. The Good Years on my 16 Edge have been great and with over 105k highway miles on them, they still have a decent amount of thread on them. The Good Years that came on my 13 F150 also lasted nearly 90K. I am going to cry if I don't get at least 75k out of the Hankooks. I am concerned about the 20k mile Oil Change, that seems super long. Guess we will see.

Ford has some serious redesign issues that they need to fix on the Ranger. They got the power train down pat now they need to listen to the buyers concerns. How can a truck that cool NOT have a sun roof? Updated graphics on the dash and screen? Why recycle stuff from a Focus? That bed drop issue is sort of alarming and it seems like they're more concerned with looks than with daily function. This is a truck, of course...so, why not have some focus on the bed and its functionality? I love Ford but these sort of half assed this and that's too bad...because they had the ability to knock this one out of the park instead of a ground rule double.

The relatively new to the US market Ford Ranger is a mediocre vehicle. This is due to the manufacturer’s lack of both ethical and sensible business practices. I speak from first hand experience, having purchased a 2019 Lariat crew cab. There is a great amount of irony associated with this critique because this truck has a lurking potential for greatness. Just look at it, then drive it, it is impressive. It delivers a ride that a full size pick-up just can not match. So what’s my gripe? One engine no options and there should be, even though the stock engine performs just fine. The same applies to having a stick shift available. The rear seat is one piece a folding seat adds so much versatility. The bed lacks all the extras that make your truck functional, and the tailgate just flops down, without the easy access system. Inside the Lariat trim is not a Lariat trim, it isn’t even an XLT. Missing are memory seat function for two, vertical power seat adjustment, heated steering wheel, power sliding rear window. The 2020 model changed nothing. This isn’t the first blunder Ford has made, the scrimpy mentality and lack of foresight that brought us the “Pinto” is still galloping around in the Ford corral.
