Big thing on those Boston albums is so much laying on the guitar tracks impossible to play everything you hear on the tracks at once, Scholz was an engineering genius.😎🤘🎸🏍
My Grandparents got me a Boston CD for my 16th birthday. My Grandad and I always shared a cake each year growing up,his birthday was the day after mine. Anyhow, I put the CD on and after Amanda played,my Grandma said that was the prettiest music she'd ever heard......great memories and still keep that album close by. Thanks buddy
Marty I met the whole band Boston at Bentley College backstage front row passes they did a show at bently College because a friend of mine's friend taking some kind of class Bentley to become a manager of stuff like this and so he set up this concert there as part of his teaching and getting credit that allowed me to get backstage and meet all the banning all that stuff it was cool that was right when they first came out right after their first album dropped 75 76 and 77 I can't remember maybe I'll tell you the story and details sometime it was pretty cool
Marty, I was a kid when that first Boston album came out and it was like nothing else we had ever heard at the time. Boston guitars, drums, and Brad’s vocals are amazing. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome! I was listening to third stage tonight. I have heard that album 10,000 times at least but haven't listened to it fully in a few years. Cool the engines is just incredible. The rocket ship sounds. Man. Tom Scholz is a brilliant dude.
Still remember when it came out was in HIGH school 😂 had a friend who's mom had a killer stereo he played it and we were blown away great time for music because shortly after Van Halen 1 came out so it was like a one two punch good times 🤘
Van Halen get a lot of credit for changing rock and roll and guitar... and with all due respect... they deserve it. But Boston really pushed it forward as well... and earlier. Sonically I don't think anyone could touch them up to that point.
I love that Tom Scholz built his own pedals and whatnot. Cant exactly replicate his tone because he designed and built his own. Genius. Love the videos
It's true. Honestly. Boston released Walk On around 1992 I believe. And that was really awesome. They had quite a run. I saw them live 6 years ago and it was great. But Tom was the only original member.
There is a content creator on here called “James James” and he breaks down classics but he was sporadic at best but he is a great teacher wether he likes that label or not…..but you have taken over or filled the gaps in a great way it’s great watching and learning from you keep it up man.
Hey Marty! I’m finally getting around to this lesson. Great stuff from an iconic rock album. I would definitely love to see a “Hitch a ride” lesson as it’s my favorite Boston tune too. I still get chills when I hear that intro and when Brad’s vocals come in. 🥶🤘🏻
Great video! I’ve been getting into Boston lately. The only problem with doing Boston songs is finding a Brad Delp to sing them. I was just getting into guitar when this album came out. I remember the first early space station called Sky Lab was going to fall out of orbit and crash to earth during this period. Of course even back then the media made a big thing about it. Me and some other guitar friends were making a joke about it crashing on us and used our very limited ability to play More Than a Feeling as the theme song for the crash. Of course it crashed into the ocean and soon became old news.😁 Edit: Have to make a few corrections. Skylab fell in 1979. I guess we were learning guitar and Boston was still huge. Also it actually landed in a deserted area of Western Australia near Perth. At 58 my memory is a bit sketchy now and then.
Loved Boston. I wanted to hear you do the lead to More than a feeling. Now I have to go find the song and hear it again. Your lessons are giving me flash backs. Remember Peter Frampton LOL.
Outstanding brother! I remember buying Third Stage on vinyl when it came out - I need to revisit this band again. Working in Aerospace, I really thought that was a cool reference they did with the songs. I later bought the fist Boston and loved most every song on that one too - Thanks man!
Great Boston or Tom Scholz Lesson. That was my sound in the 80's i used to play my rockman 1/2 rack effects right through the board at whatever club i was playing at the time.
Why yes sir Mr Marty Boston!! Such a great band with great music and tragic history. Barry Goudreau was Brad Delps brother n Law. He introduced Brad to Tom. Tom ended up firing Barry between albums. Not many people know that Barry wrote and recorded those 1st Iconic Boston songs.
Yep. Internal struggles and money. Tom works slow and is a hermit as well as perfectionist. Barry, Sib and Brad were gonna do a record and it sort of looked and sounded like an alternative to a Boston record. I can see where that would be an internal issue and a business concern. Labels. Money. Etc etc. The music biz! Lol
Excellent riffs, thanks Marty! Man, my favorite Boston tune of all time is We're Ready.... Man, amazing guitar off of that track and entire album period. 😎🎸 Happy Easter to you and your family sir. Rock on! God bless!
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Oh yeah Cool The Engines and Hollyann!! Indeed. Lol I dig Amanda too as a melodic sort of ballad. It's one you don't hear on radio anymore but chicks really use to dig that, when people hear it they're like man I miss this tune! Especially girls named Amanda. Third Stage takes me back to an awesome time. 86
Marty, I really enjoyed this video. Aside from how to play riffs/song/solos, I dig the theory aspects, please keep that aspect of your videos. I don't normally comment on videos but thought you needed to hear from someone that appreciates your choice to cover these Boston songs even though they aren't the most popular band for guitar lesson videos.
Thanks Marty! Boston is great for sure. I've got a Rockman out in the garage I picked up somewhere. Don't think I've ever tried it out. Gunna go dig that thing up.
Great lessons and at the 6:12 mark reminds me of the Foghat song Fool for the City. Your new Les Paul reminds me of Gary Richrath. Thank You for these lessons
Great Job! Always watching your channel! I never noticed, until you slowed the beginning of More Than a Feeling, that it is so similar to Rush's SOLILOQUY from 2112. Basically starts the same and ends differently.
Boston is a great band, bought that first album when it came out and I was hooked, Tom Scholz is a genius at song writing, learned alot of their stuff off album one and don't look back , love this band, thank you Marty for a great video and flashback 🤘
Hi Marty, By far this is one of my all time favorite albums of all time. I completely wore out the first album when it first came out in 76. I am a Bass player mainly & the bass really drives as well. What more can you say these songs never get old. Stay safe and well and keep Rocking. Signed John ( Zepbass) Gregory from Munster Indiana.
Made a comment on another video saying Van Halen 1 was the best debut album of all time. Somebody replied, advocating for Boston’s debut. I still stand by my selection, but still a great record.
Thank You for this Marty. I have loved Boston since the first time I heard them. Tom has been my favorite along with EVH followed by Neal Schon and Billy Gibbons! 57 years old here, oh have to mention Stevie Ray as well! The Cars as well! lol I vote for part 2 and 3 definitely. Those were great years! The only good thing about being 57 years old! lol
Thank you, NOT Van Halen, but it'll work. I still have this on 8 track AND cassette. Who knows, I might buy the cd. BTW, how about some Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush? Specifically the 1979 LIVE album. Listen to side 2. Johnny B. Goode to Purple Haze. Love the LIVE jam!! Give it a listen😎🔥🔥🔥🔥 Sincerely, L. Albert Jackson Munoz
Thanks Marty! Another excellent lesson. Sounds great on the Les Paul. Probably would sound good on the VH guitar but it would be different sound than Boston recording. That's my opinion anyways. Peace.
Yeh I moved my youtube studio area into a different room. Sorry about the fuzzy looking video, the camera was not liking the lighting for some reason. 😞
MARTY5150, try to do a Tom Scholz Theory lesson because he uses SUS chords, relative mode and modulates keys. Try to find a bunch of examples of boston songs that he modulates keys, where he uses the relative mode and uses SUS Chords to lead to the next section. He uses SUS chords like Augmented chords to lead into the next section of the song. He was classically trained on organ which I think it says on the back cover of the 1st record so that is why his melodies are themes and his chord progressions have phrases. He is good at making phrases and themes.
Tom Scholz contributed as much on the gear side of Music as he did actual Music. The Rockman would be featured on many platinum albums. Sorry to comment twice. Tom would have preferred you cover his music with a guitar you made. Afterall, he made all of the equiment that he recorded his albums with. He probably won't be mad, just dissapointed. LOL Have a great easter weekend!
I too have a number of favorites. Tom, EVH (RIP) and Brian May. I’m probably better at covering May, but love playing in the others styles. Strange enough, having been born in the U.K. (Wales), Brian is the only British player I like. The rest of the Brit bands are too dark and morbid for my taste. I prefer the “get up and go” American 80’s rock/metal, with harmony and melody. I have to assume that Peavey amp, with the Cessna dashboard, must be growing on you. It’s still there 🙂
I know bits and peices of these songs but not the whole songs lol same with van Halen I know enough to get in trouble I hate it been doing these since the 80s I'm 58
Good lesson Marty but there is a far easier way to play the intro to Hitch a ride , just start of at the 7th fret a power chord and move dow n a whole step, then d string down a half step then the 1 st position a chord, Same notes but far easier to play
I have had a hard time last week getting the spare time for writing and editing so I just released the video. Didn't want to miss a week of posting. Been so hectic lately. It takes a few hours to write and edit which I just didn't have. So sorry. 🤷
Marty love you man but the reason why hitch a ride is so hard is because it’s supposed to be am A string open D7-G9 then A open slide down 2 frets D5 G7 then same but D4 G7 then A chord first 3 strings . Which is super easy to play. You still blow me away on guitar but I can’t let you suffer any longer.
All Van Halen fan are also Boston Fans! All Boston fans are NOT Van Halen fans! Third Stage is one of the Greatest Albums of all Time. Dont look Back is also incredible.
I love the guitar harmonies in Boston's songs. My favorite song is probably Hitch A Ride. The best tutorial I've found on it is by this fellow. It seems very accurate. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RB70RcS0Z7k.html
It's funny I grew up in a small town and we had one rock station. I hated Boston and Journey (I was into thrash and punk) but I've grown to love them. ...but I don't know what it is, but I still hate Foreigner. I know they are talented and wrote well constructed tunes.. still can't listen to anything they do
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Love your channel and what you teach us! Thanks for being a real accessible person. I have really pared down in who I subscribe to, but you are my fav!
