Love your ideas, Emily! One of the best habits this 75-year- old warrior granny has is never missing one of your videos!!! I find you to be intelligent, liberating, and fun!!!
You got me at bad ass music. At 67, keeping up with new metal, alternative and modern rock has kept me feeling like I'm not getting "too old" for youthful style, but just getting closer to my coolest, most unique self. I still feel edgy, creative, a bit eccentric, and confident in going outside the mainstream expectation for women of my age. And as the years passed, I learned to care little if at all about how others react to my edgy, somewhat bad ass choices. At least I'm not hiding in the land of frump, or too lazy or hesitant to wear what I love. I have actually finally come to love my own self, even with my faults, quirks and offbeat ideas, and I feel like the real me on the inside AND OUTSIDE, showing the true me without fear and despite how "appropriate" I may appear.
My number 1 habit to keep my personal style feeling right is to check tomorrow’s weather every night and consider the next day’s events then plan and set out what I’m going to wear. Way less fuss for a strong start to the day.
Gosh I love your video's, they just hit the spot on edgy fashion chic! Last week my son 35yo said to me that I don't dress to my quirky personality anymore which really hit me but it made me realise that I had "dulled" down my style which is usually similar to yours but with a 1950's twist to it. So I hit the shops and purchased a few new items and accessories, I then walked into a random hairdressers and had my hair cut back into a short edgy style that I not only love but inspires and makes me feel good about myself. Thank you again for your videos, your style, music and smile.
Ahh Emily, you are so right on it! There comes a time when every true artist’s creativity takes the form of expression to other parts of life than creating objects. You have transcended the idea of fashion into an expression of yourself. When it doesn’t ‘feel’ right, then it’s not expressing YOU. When I look at an article of clothing that interests me, I first imagine myself wearing it, then if that passes the test, I ask myself if I love it. Then I go on to ask if I’ll wear it a lot and finally the basics: fabric, fit and appropriate to my lifestyle. It may seem like a lot to go through but the clothes that I have are a part of me now and express who I am. A long time ago I let go of all the staring-I embrace it now. I’m a badass! I love myself but it took many years of meditation and acceptance to come to this place in my life. Magazines, videos and other people’s opinions are fine. They can even be entertaining. But I’m here to live my own life and I’m living in full expression, wonder and exploration. It gets better and better as each year passes.
I want to thank you for helping me find open wardrobe. It shows me what’s in my closet so when I’m on social media and see and outfit I love I can try to recreate it with stuff I already own.
I just got out of an 11 year long work stint in an incredibly toxic beauty salon. The owner was a narcissist and it nearly broke me. Your advice about avoiding toxic people and environments was more profound than you probably realize. Extricating yourself from toxicity frees you to be able to be fully authentic and the types of habits or “rules” you speak of suddenly become clearer and easier to follow.
ATTITUDE is everything! I had a dance instructor explain that to me. Thanks for reminding me of this with the "badass music" aspect in your confidence habits.
You’re so right about music. One tip I’d add is “check your posture”. Take a before and after look in the mirror while you’re doing it. You’ll be amazed at how much better you look regardless of what you’re wearing.
Ooo very good question…what do I do? I think I when I get dressed I imagine my outfit, even if I wear a mustard cardigan from Target, I think, what will complete this in a fun way? Contrast is my thing a lot, along with comfort lately. I try to put the pieces together to get impact in contrast. For example, mustard goes nice with purple, but if I want contrast I go ref or purple with my accoutrements. I wear a pink beret with mustard a lot too.
Hi Emily! I love your personal style in clothes and taste in music. Do you feel comfortable making your Spotify playlist public in a link for us to click on? Im cleaning out closets and always play edgy music when trying on clothes to determine if I should keep or donate.
YESSS! Love the entire dialog about music! Music is such a passion! My Boss mix would include Madonna, Qveen Herby, Sleigh Bells, The Kills, Beyonce, Rhianna, Grimes...ugh...I can go on!
I watch you because you don't compare yourself to others, you're not afraid to be edgy and creative, but not so over the top that it's impractical for "normal" life. I connect with that tom boy/classic with a twist style. Your life advise is also helpful and timeless, and....I love your boss music too. :)
Just today l really felt that l am beginning to create my own personal style and have taken on board all your tips. It has helped so much to watch your videos and to hear your honest and realistic comments. I feel that l shall be on this exciting journey forever and my wardrobe is becoming more curated and my confidence is growing ! Thankyou as always
I completely relate to navigating away from negative friends. Not just negative in general, but particularly someone who gives me a bad time or questions why I make the effort to dress well, or wear lipstick, makeup, etc...One person said, "I don't have a husband to look nice for so I don't care." Well, I just explained that I don't do it for my husband, I do it for me. Esthetically I feel much more comfortable making friends with women who care about their appearance and enjoy creativity that way, and I'm working on not feeling bad about it.
Love you and everything u do. I do understand how you feel about fashion and everything. Love you for helping me out with my style. I'm glad you are here. Keep up great work.
I'm so excited to have discovered your channel! (I think I've played over a dozen videos just since yesterday. Lol.) I've already downloaded the OpenWardrobe app and am on my way to declutter with my favorite music in the background! Thank you!!
Always enjoy your videos so much! My problem is not confidence anymore but more finding pieces of clothing that fit my style( wrong fabric, wrong colour or wrong shape...) and that I really love!!! If I had the money I would be contemplating having clothes made from scratch!!!!( love "badass" music as well, anything that makes me want to get up and dance!!!)
A happy medium that won’t break the bank is you can buy something secondhand and have it tailored or even start sewing your own clothes it’s not as hard as it looks you can use patterns to help you get started.
Well said! We all need to safeguard our confidence tanks and be the Boss Warrior Women we are meant to be! Not agressive and confrontational, but brave and courageous! The clothes are just a launching pad.
These are great tips, Emily! Thank you for sharing! It’s really great timing for me. I’ve been finally losing weight after three pregnancies and my confidence in my current style seems to be getting a little iffy as I get back to my original shape. It will be interesting to see how my style evolves through this. 🤔 Thanks again!
Hi! Thank you so much for the video, Emily. Loved it. Sometimes it’s the simple things we forget to embrace…. I totally agree about the music tip. Jam out, feel good, feel confident. ☺️ thank you so much!
Emily, I have classic, bohemian and a little edge style. I had the hardest time finding a channel that helped me sort my fashion sense out to translate that. Well, here you are and I love what you’re doing here in this channel. ❤️ It’s helped me get my minimalist wardrobe together this year which was a goal this year and it’s going really well (with your help). I’m feeling very confident about the choices I’ve made in my closet. This is an ongoing process and I’m at the point where I can play around with intermingling pieces and making them all work together. Your tips & tricks help me so much 🙏🏼 so I hope you always are reminded of how many of us you help. I need to check out that app girlfriend that is so cool 😎
I am LOVING Open Wardrobe! My husband and I just downsized everything we own and are going to Germany with the hopes of staying at least a year. Open Wardrobe has been so helpful in organizing my clothing since we will be living out of suitcases.
Hi chica! This video is so different and valuable! Habits are everything you truly need to work on for everything you want to achieve. We all need to get dressed so this appeals to everyone regardless of style. Anyways, bravo!
Comparison is the thief of joy. Still having to remind myself of this at 37. I have progressed to a point of self-love & acceptance but still have to check myself especially with social media. I recall a couple years ago my husband & I went to England without acquiring any debt. We came back & I was on Instagram not more than a week after we returned feeling bad about my life because what I saw other people acquiring or doing made me feel like I didn’t have or do enough. Mind you we own properties, have no car notes, no credit card debt & travel at least yearly, usually more. We are doing well & I still felt bad. That moment & feeling was a serious reality check! Every time that feeling starts to creep up, I check myself.
Emily, I'm so interested in your eye for edgy style, I'd love to see videos about what feels modern and cutting edge to you, and what doesn't: hairstyles, decor, anything!
I've dubbed my alter ego my dark passenger lol thanks Dexter, but she likes leather and black things and is dangerous and beautiful. She's probably from Sweden and you know some underground spy for the government. Lol A huge reflection in my art and the way that I dress, my writing everything I can relate to an alter ego. And music propels me everyday, it can uplift you when you aren't feeling well, or need the boost of energy to get things done. I like a good walking song, I take a lot of transit so it makes sense.
I'm a 65-year-old grandma and definitely not as cool as you are, but I want to move in the direction of (a little) edgier, chic, minimal style. I love your "you do you" attitude. Per your suggestion, I just created my "Badass" playlist on Spotify. What fun! What song are you using for your montage opening? I appreciate your generous work. Thank you!
Emily. What is the name of the company you mentioned months ago regarding custom tailoring on Jackets, shirts, pants etc?.. I would like to order a few pieces...Thank you so much..LSVP
Hi, love your channel, but please consider doing a video for older women. I'm 55 and having a difficult time trying to dress appropriately. I dress comfortably abit edgy but conflicted of how I would of dressed even 10 years ago geeze it's kinda strange going thru this aging gracefully but still cool LOL HELP PLEASE
