Started using lifelines for the first time last year. So much more comfortable going up and down! Don't know why I haven't been using them for the past 25 years!

I just don't feel right without being hooked into my lifeline... the prussic knot was one of the best Boy Scout lessons!! I am using a shroud around my metal snap lock this year.. was often tinking off my ladder or stand on way up or down..

I appreciate your focus on safety. I "run and gun" with a light hangon and either sticks or strap steps. I use a lineman's lanyard but that is not enough for full fall protection. I cannot use a lifeline like you showed easily, but I do use my tether the whole way up while climbing. It only adds minutes to your climb. Simply attach the tether and move it ahead of you. It is super easy to do this with a climber. Simply slide the tether up, climb a bit, and repeat.

Absolutely best place to come for good information. I ran into problems like what you talk about at 6:20. Yeah its cool to say I had deer all around me......but I couldn't get drawn down on them to save my life with out one of them picking me off. Now that I know about where they will stop and mingle around, this fall stands will be more on there path than there destination. Thank you.

awesome tips jeff.ì hunt like this out of high treestands and it has become a religious way of hunting for myself.h.s.s. lines also have the rubber cover to protect the buckle from banging against the metal ladder which helps tremendously.i also use bow arms to position my bow for easy quick grabbing so theres hardly any movement

Life lines, super important. My cousin fell 30 ft and broke his back had to learn to walk again. He was lucky before he passed away at just 32 or 33 years old from an unrelated accident. Safety 1st.

Lifelines are the one thing every hunter should use in a treestand. One tip: when you're going down the tree don't leave your hand on the loop. If you fall and your hand is on it, it will not function, you'll just pull it right down the rope. It's a bit of a pain but the process is. Pull the loop to your chest height, take your hand off the loop and put it back on the ladder, go down a step, repeat.

I like a tree stand, but I LOVE blinds. Something about staying on the ground makes me feel good lol. Also, I have been able to get surprisingly close to deer with ground blinds.

Just bought some land 122 acres. On a section of hard woods I found a really nice well made metal tree stand left behind or I hope it was. Anyways I just painted my trees purple so the tree stand is mine now. The stand looks good just needs new straps. I want to move it because the seat is way stupid to get too, not 90 degrees like you said. I was looking for info on this and you nailed it. I knew this seat was just looking way to dangerous to climb into.

Jeff.....lookie,lookie a.michigan boy using a Michigan made product. Family traditions makes great products, a little pricey butt my life is worth it.i made the drive this year and picked up 2 set ups.my only dealer had a fire and no inventory to sell.only about 1 hr each way.ladders are so rock solid and hang on is comfortable.. love the videos and thank you for you sharing your knowledge. I like to pick an area, walk in, find fresh sign then sit down. That way the buck has no chance of smelling that you have been in the area until your actually there. I also play the wind and never sit in the same place, so the bucks odds of running into me increase because he can't pattern me. I believe I see deer, when most folks are online asking, "will the deer move today?" Because #1, I'm out there in the elements and #2, I'm usually in a spot where no one has been in 2-3 years at a club. Simply because there is no trail or a fancy shooting house. Or you have to climb up a steep hill or a deep creek.

I see that a life line isn’t as need in a smaller, shorter ladder stand, lockons a life line is a must it creates much more comfort and assurance

You give a lot of great info, but I feel that my situation is atypical. I hunt on private land in Southern WV. Steep mountains and valleys. It's hard to get in and out of anywhere. My best area is a creek head where I have view of most of the mountainside

good info wish i had pine to hunt here in ks.only cedar where i live but like pine no need for a ladder here cedar are easy to climb with all there limbs and have great cover to ambush a giant ive shot many nice deer from cedar trees

I like that i hunt the same tree stand for 20 yrs and i do love it and it is a great location i try other spots and i always go back to that one but i need to learn to mix things up cuz you just never know that next big deer might be on that other property just need to give honest chance but always go back to confidence in location i know i will always see deer on my stand some days are gonna be better than others but still see em always enjoy your videos

I’ve never used any type of harness but I’m goin to start this year. I’ll get me one of them life lines I like that idea. Hey brother were at the end of May I’m fixing to put one water hole in soon and a plot.

There was a future monster buck that little button buck. Me to I’ve done the same thang brother.

One thing I would suggest from a safety stand point is to add another section to your ladder so you are above your tree stand and can step right onto you tree stand from the ladder safely.

Hey, ... you're great; ... I watch all your videos ! I'm not a big tree stand hunter, but am big on safety. I'm questioning the sharp unfinished edge of the Male joint protruding at the top of the laddder. Murphy's Law ... I just see that as something that could snag clothing when lowering yourself to that first step or harm you if you miss or slip off that first step; possibly getting your face ? Possibly a cap ?

A really great informative video, I not only agree with all your placement for stands, but I really appreciate how you stressed the importance of safety. I suffer to this day because of a fall from removing an old deer stand that I use to use back in 1981. I fell 21' backwards, & if it were not for my brother, & a friend being there when it all happened, I probably would not be typing this message to you now. I just wished that I had a place to hunt again I live in NW Indiana, & unless you are willing to spend a lot of money to lease a peace of property you don't have a chance to hunt hardly.So if you have a audience that has a place to hunt, you may want to stress the importance of taking care of the land owners that still allow people to hunt. Did I hear you right that you have clients that hunt your property, & if so what does it cost? GOD BLESS & again a Great video.

One of my huntin-buddy's, while going to his huntin-stand in the dark, slightly got off course, & fell in his own, man-made, waterhole. It was 28-degrees... WA-Ha!

Question: I heard you mention 20ft. Is that the standard height that you set your portable stands at, or do you ever go higher or lower than that? I’m using a 17ft ladder stand, but want to take the next step with a portable configuration like you are showing...my guy tells me that even a little more than 20ft would be better? I've heard you mention a few times that your best stand should be the next stand you shoot a mature buck from. My question is what if in a hunting club situation with a number of permanent treestand locations, how do you keep a treestand a great treestand?

I just can’t get into tree stands. I tried them 45-50 years ago when they were not as ubiquitous as they are today. Now I mostly hurt elk and I don’t see much use for them but when I hunt whitetails i just glass and stalk similar to how I hunt mule deer. Tree stands spook me these days. I don’t heal so fast anymore. :)

I know that you never use ladder stands, but can I be successful hunting mature deer using a ladder stand? I'm not a big fan of hang-on stands as I have had a few close calls when I was just starting out.

How can I avoid deer staying in my food plot for too long instead of doing a pass thru? I hunt on property I don't own so can't make a lot of adjustments to where the location of the food plot is. It's only 3/4 of an acre food plot in NW Illinois but still had problems with them staying in it for too long last season.

PSA : The wedding ring and the tree peg! My buddy and I did a set he let go and jumped the last set step and his ring caught and peeled the meat right off the bone .. now we're 1 mile out in the woods and his finger looks like an open banana 🍌.. I swore to never wear a ring after that.

Water holes everyone does water holes. It don't even matter oh it draws some in but I've hunted for 30 years and it's a waste of time hauling water in the woods a quarter mile. If your in the right spot you are gold and with out water holes.
