Awesome video Dylan! Picked some new things up, as these plays are very counter-intuitive. Great finds 😊. My favorite strategy is the blocking bank YoP, it feels the most next-level to me
I've seen a few of your videos that were dual commentary. I thought it could be cool if you did a dual play with someone :P Like Treeckosaurus! Two players playing the same color!
This will definitely get you revenge blocked by probably both players, plus will lead to terrible trade deals/possible full embargo’s from one or both players as well. Plus ya just seem like a dick to the table, I see this in the same light as a dirty mono
@@gavinbock8531 in a casual environment yes definitly. for high stakes though, i mean grey is really screwed in that position. No cities no Ore low brick, he must have a play in that scale to turn the chances around.
I would try to table-talk so that the hate is directed at Green too (for accepting the trade). Then it's more like a two on two rather than three on one.
@@gavinbock8531 in higher level tournaments, people tend to not revenge block. They are playing to win. They'll block the most strategic person. People who play with their emotions don't get far in tournaments.
After more thought the last strat would be good for one game, but you have to consider the long term effects of it. If you play with the same people often they will nevvvvver trust you again. There will be way fewer beneficial trades for you in the future. You win that battle decisvely, but if no one trusts you you'll probably lose the war.
no you dont it was their mistake (especially blues) to not see ahead far enough, in return green could have made the counter offer himself, after grey traded with blue. in this situation it is not about trusting it is about seeing what is on the board and who goes up next. especially considering this is the play that lets grey survive in this game.
@@mauer1 yea i can agree with that. But your friends will probably still blame you for beeing an asshole instead of realizing that technical it was their (blues) mistake. I think this is normal tho cause the way you think about the game is very diffrent between most friends/family and ppl who watch this (insanly good) content for competitive catan.
The exact scenario described has an easy solution for blue: State that you will not accept the trade if he gets two lumber from the year of plenty, and will only do it if he takes just one lumber.
YoP into card burning is definitely my favorite strategy there. It is something I don't think I'd ever find in a game without this video but definitely a nice way to slightly increase an edge. That last strategy is brutal. I feel like everyone has exploited racing situations before but it never occurred to me to try to trick the 2nd player into a blunder. before.
Last strategy was great, but if the blue player was really tracking well and paying attention, he would have seen the yop for 2 wood. He would know that unless you wanted to trade the wood to green, a better card for you was sheep, which would complete a dev and empty your hand. So he is walking into the trap, and that’s not ruthless, that’s just on him. He should have demanded both wood. Or at a minimum a verbal commitment you won’t trade it to green. Note that he never guaranteed himself the spot anyways, as Green could hit 9 or 10 and port 4 ore for the wood.
Right on time. I just finished the last one of your videos. Now I have watched them all, except for this one! Really enjoy the quality of your videos and the entertaining/educational factor! Keep it on!
Nice video, and the last strategy is pretty smart but also ruthless. I also enjoyed the backgroundmusic, what did you use? Maybe you have to link it or something
Damn that was sick! I never thought there was a reason to play the other dev cards before rolling, but this totally makes sense. Hope you put out some more vids soon, we need more DyLighted content! By the way some of the audio on this one was a little boomy. Not a big deal at all, but I think you could do a low shelf EQ at 200Hz and cut out probably like -3db and it would sound more balanced. If you weren't the one who added in that boost around 150-200Hz in this vid it could be a bass boost from being close to the microphone (proximity effect), which can be counteracted with the EQ cut I described
Wow, i've been playing Settlers of Catan for quite some years now and this is the first time i've seen someone playing the dev cards before the roll. I will apply this tactic myself and see if I can win. Thank you for the pro tips!🥰🥰🥰
if u think with about 1000 games catan per year u have seen all and then dylighted comes and expose me some new tricks. thx for ur good work. U are making all of us better players and monsters of strategy. i would never hit plat without ur videos.
@@DyLightedCatan a how to track video would be great. I really struggle with it and assume it's an innate ability I just don't have. I do watch rare resources and starting resources, but can't track like you. I am noticing more and more after watching your videos though- you always mention it.
So the underlying principle is...track with high accuracy. It's fundamental for all of these edge cases, no? Really enjoyed the audio (music) in this one (Y). Minor but adds to the overall vibe.
I don't think the last strategy is gonna work ever. If they are such good players that they track each others hands completely, they will also not forget that year of plenty gives you 2 ressources and blue will only make that trade if you include a clause not to trade green a wood or anything else what will give green a wood indirectly.
All the ideas are base on you have an accurate knowledge of cards that everyone has. How do you keep track of cards for these precision strategies? When people use knight or roll 7, you don't know which resource they steal from the others and lose track.
These make sense but I have never encountered such scenarios lol, in the mono scenario you can mono wheat post roll and 4:1, so it just shows you how niche these strats are. Good to highlight it though.
Dear friend, I want so say "congratulations" for this great channel. I have never been into the classic Catan board game all that much - I actually prefer the card game version (Rivals for Catan) a lot, since I find that it offers way more tactical and strategic depth. However, with this channel and the countless hours of top level professional gameplay it provides, you have actually delivered proof that the common prejudice "no depth involved in the basic Catan board game - 80% luck" couldn't be further from the truth. It is great fun and I really enjoy watching your videos, taking part in your advanced thought processes. Also the post-game editing is very appealing and one can tell that you are putting a lot of effort into it - so keep up the great work! Now, I have a few questions and I hope you will find the time to answer them: 1. Do you also play the Seafarers and/or Cities and Knights expansion from time to time? Are there any plans to upload some gameplay videos including the expansions as well? If not, why? Is the "pro / competitive playing scene" just mainly focused on the base game or is it a matter of your personal taste? Many people argue that it is only with the more complex Cities and Knights expansion that Catan gains some considerable strategic depth and replayability. However, as I have already stated above, your channel serves as perfect proof that this is not the case. This being said, wouldn't an occasional Cities and Knights game from time to time make for even more variety and even greater challenges? 2. What is your opinion on the current state of Catan Universe? I have watched your video about CU from about a year ago and I basically agree with every point of criticism you have uttered there. Are you even still playing at Catan Universe at all? Do you still have hope that the platform will ever become really playable? Considering the fact that Catan is such a great trademark, that they are making millions all over the world with this game, it is simply flabbergasting to me that they haven't been able to come up with a high quality digital version FOR YEARS now. It is just beyond my scope, I cannot understand how such a thing is even possible in the year 2021. 3. Have you ever tried the Catan card game "Rivals for Catan"? As it can be told from your videos, you are really into tactical/strategic skirmishes and seeking even the slightest of edges over your opponents. With this attitude, I think "Rivals" is a game you would also enjoy a lot.
Thank you for the kind message! 1. I play base game because it’s the most popular, shortest, and has the biggest competitive audience. I also haven’t really spent any time trying to get better at Cities and Knights so I don’t feel qualified to make videos on it. 2. Catan Universe has improved, but still takes some steps backwards in progress by introducing new bugs. It’s very flabbergasting to me too, because if they did a good job, colonist.io wouldn’t exist. 3. I haven’t tried it, but it sounds interesting!
I would also love to see what strategies Dylan would find in Cities and Knights :) As of my experience, it’s definitely much more skill based than Base game is.
Dylann, I love your channel. I really appreciate advice on how to be a better Catan player. One thing I've noticed is how good you are at tracking people's cards. Do you have any simple tips about how to remember what people have? I think I'm going to watch replays of a few games and follow what's in people's hands. Any other ideas?
Board games could be relationship ending with backstabs like the last strategy. I suppose you did mention these are strategies for pros indicating it's for tournament play.
Super massive big brain move OMG🤯🤯 Me: (After watching all your videos & played like 1000 Catan games) I'm pretty sure I know all about Catan strategies now. You with this video: Guess again. 😂😂Hope teaching suits you well and hopefully see you again soon on Twitch👍👍
I do quite like the extortion in that last play, however realistically that'll make you a huge target for the rest of the game. Blue would absolutely resent the play and avoid trading / target you and depending how badly you extort green the same could be the said for him and the third player if they didn't already would definitely see you as a manipulative threat and not trust any of your deals for the rest of the game. So this move better be good enough for you that you'll have an insurmountable lead. If you're playing in the qualifying round of a tournament, you'll also have to consider the possibility that you could end up playing against one of these opponents in a future game in that same tournament. So whatever extra 2-4 cards you're extorting this turn, could cost you a lot of good faith deals down the road.
It was green fault for falling for it, this is not real life where sich tactics are forbidden by law (or some are) this is a game where everyone wants to win. They will learn and make sure it never happens to them again. They will think ahead better and in this example either not accept the trade for these conditions or make a deal that's shuts this play off. (like 2:5 or whatever) This is a very specific scenario where the one with yop had the Value of choosing who wins the race. He wants to get the most out of it, but it's also true that the next player after him is just first to build ud he somehow gets another way of wood. If you are mad at the one making the play then you stop your growth as a player.
@@mauer1 Who said I was mad? I started off my comment by saying how I like the play. I was explaining the drawbacks of making those kinds of plays though. If someone is going to extort players to such a degree, they'll have to consider the potential consiquences for doing so. Other players becoming unhappy with that player and working against them is absolutely something that'll happen (even in tournament play), and when presented with an all else equal decision on who to trade with they certainly wouldn't be accepting an offer from the player who just extorted the table.
Ive got a question about the last one. The moment blue says yes to the deal, you do the YOP for 2 Wood. Can blue now cancel the trait to make you waste your devcard and denie your geniusly evil play (maybe even because of seeing through it)? Or is it a binding trade the moment blue says yes? The deal between you and blue is kind of a future trait because you need to play the dev card be4. And i dont even know if the last point matters at all :D.
A verbal agreement is a non binding trade, so when blue sees that they can back out of the trade with the reasoning you might screw them over. Another way to prevent this is to have a verbal clause saying “if I do this trade you can’t trade green the spot to build there”
You’ve mentioned in previous videos about production points concerning resource and numbers on them. How do you count this? Can you post a video on this or is this too secret? I understand if so, if you need to keep a card in your sleeve, so to speak. But am new and really curious.
Strategy 3: Monopolying sheep can also give you the win with the 2:1 sheep port for brick because if a 7 rolls we are at 7 cards and thus we don't discard the sheep and we win the game by building a settlement.
I’ve never tracked cards in Catan. My brian doesn’t do such things easy. Maybe someday. I’m very competitive, but counting seems like a lot of work. Guess it would get easy after a while.
As blue I would just back off from the trade when I see the second wood. Now blue is a bit more of in position to get a better deal with that reasoning.
Yeah the last strat is a no go if it's not a one-off tournament game with unique opponents. It is a bad move in a situation where your reputation persists.
those are some high IQ strats you got there, nice video, dylan! did you actually encounter those in game before, or was that just part of your stategic preparation? the last technique looks insanely profitable, but definitly not something for friendly matches haha btw the animation quality is amazing!! :)
Technically I would call these tactics rather than strategies, because a strategy is a long term plan to gain an advantage, whereas these are short term plans. Still very good information though.
Here is a strat: - You have a monopoly in hand only. - Threaten to use your "knight" (down dev-card) to pull for eg wheat from an opponent. - Instead make them commit a wheat trade for your ore. - Then play the monopoly and get your ore back. Only do this if you win the game immediately, or are sure you don't need any more trades :p.
Hello Dylighted how have you been doing lately. Are you planning to compete in the Mind sports Olympiad? Also don't lose heart and stop posting your weekly videos if your previous fee videos haven't done as well as you expected. We all know how much effort you put into your videos and us loyal subscribers really appreciate it. Do keep up the good work. Thanks.
I'm posting this before watching the video. My guess on what you're about to talk about, based on the thumbnail and title, is burning up your own cards in order to avoid an opponent monopolizing them. Late game most likely. Let's see if I'm right. I did not read any of the existing comments either.
Yea I wouldn’t do it in a casual game or if I’m going to play with the same people again. I would only do it in a competitive setting with high stakes.
I knew all of them, but I think the last one wouldn't work here, if blue is a good player.. He should never give you more than one ressource for wood, because he earns it by 3 and 8 and still 2 rolls left :-D
I misinterpreted the "for pros" part of the title. I though these are tips how to become a pro (or at least better). Turns out you already need to be a pro to use them.
