I was too young but cannot forget the way Mia bends her back like a divine yogi in Atlanta 96. This is imo one of her greatest skill. Always got goosebumps when reading her story. This is no different, thx for putting everything beautifully into context.
I still vividly remember her olympics final in 2004. She didn't go all the way, but her way of hitting the shuttle mesmerised me (if only I had half of her wrist power). It's crazy thinking that she's only 25 then, after all the years she had been playing (and winning!) internationally.
As an Indonesian Badminton Lover who's lately has been disapointed by the current Badminton Indonesia achievement, this video is both enjoyable and painful to watch. For those who are responsible, shame on you for letting our nation's sport pride sinking.
Strong and important message to PBSI, It sucks that i paid vision+ sports tv just to watch all the badminton series, but as long as i follow the more disappointments that i got, so i unfollow all the badminton official/page in instagram and cancel the subscription it just sucks to see Indonesia’s Badminton is worsening.
What a player! The five things crazily achieved from 13-17 yo. ❤ miss her when she's moved to NL but still able to play during OG 2004, is pretty awesome
A truly remarkable talent achieving insane things. Crazy thing is she achieved all that but you could argue she didn't achieve enough. One of the most naturally talented players ever
Amazing video with great production quality and storytelling. And most importantly I think videos like this are so valuable because they pretty much don't exist anywhere else, at least as far as I am aware of. As someone who only followed badminton in recent years I never would have found out about this incredible player. You are able to fill a big gap with your videos. Keep it up, really looking forward to more from this channel!
Thank you ever so much, I'm glad you enjoyed and found it useful. Yes I think I might be the only channel at the moment doing this sort of thing. Plenty more to come, hope you enjoy those too
Beautifully well put together, a remarkable player to so many of us! She is one of the reasons I started playing badminton as a Dutch kiddo, and still do after so many years😊
She is absolutely phenomenal. Mia is crazily talented and she has that art of badminton in every single of her match. She's the Indonesian legend and I hope someday she can return to Indonesia becoming a coach.
She really was. Sadly though I'm not sure about her returning. I believe she hasn't been back in Indonesia since leaving. She certainly never played another tournament held there
Great video! I was happy that such a legend moved to The Netherlands (as I'm Dutch). Even better that she won silver at the Olympic Games in Athens! Her around the head shot where she almost breaks her back is chef's kiss! That move was such a trademark of hers and I really wanted to emulate that on court haha. After she stopped playing, it's like she vanished into thin air. I wonder what she's doing right now and hope she enjoys a well deserved live after badminton
Yeah that around the head shot is just ridiculous. She played every shot so effortlessly and was a great player. I don't know what she's up to these days either but I also hope whatever it is that she's doing well
Mia will forever be my favorite badminton player. Her elegance when she glides on court, finesse in her play making, and her choice to sacrifice power for placement is something I still haven't seen in any of the new crop of shuttlers.
Mia and Taufik Hidayat has been world class badmunton player at their young age for Indinesia. Now its so difficult finding players like them in this country.
1996 Mia presented silver medal Olympic for Indonesia 2004 She presented Silver Olympic Medal for Netherland. Ya she still The youngest world Rank no.1 Badminton player. In Women Single Dicipline Mia Audina folowed by Ye Zhao Ying In Men Single Dicipline Lin Dan and Taufik Hidayat. They are Indonesian & Chinese.
I feel Mia Audina is the antithesis of Zhang Ning. One being the most accomplished youngest player while the other being the oldest most accomplished player.
lol aside from 2 uber cup, mia didnt do much more when she was a teen. what big titles did she win during her teen years when she was still indonesian?? her peak as indonesian player was prolly silver medal in atlanta. susi susanti carried indonesia ladies badminton up until her retirement. she held on to that #1 indonesian woman single all the way.
@fuckurbody Mia might have never won a major but you can't deny what she achieved was pretty crazy. U make an Olympic silver at 16 sound like something that happens everyday
@@BenBeckmanBadminton yeah thats great, but what she achieved as a teenager didnt compare to what zhang ning achieved. not even close! do u need me to list zhang ning achievements here to compare to what mia did pre-netherland days??
Great video! The Indonesian women's team was truly amazing back then, with Uber cup titles in 1994 and 96. Wonder why they are now significantly weaker than the male team?
Late 80s to mid 90s Indonesia had fantastic women's team. They still have talent but not quite the same level. Why? That's not an answer I can give in a comment...maybe a video one day?...
Basically lack of coaching by the federation. Few factors I can draw as an Indonesian. - At the end of 1990's we fell into Monetary & Political crisis, so sport governing body such as PBSI(Indonesian Badminton Federation) was kinda neglected and become an organization that use for political gain. It's a state of crisis, sport wasn't a priority for people. - In early 2000s when Indonesia bounce back from the crisis, there's a booming trend of Talent Contest TV Show (adopted American Idol etc) seems like lots of parents back then see less appealed to push their kids into sports like what Mia Audina's father did. Indonesian was sucked into the instant fame game (lots of talent show back then; singing, acting, comedy, but sports) - Presumably there was a little 'trauma' on the women's side of coaching within PBSI, when Mia Audina's move to Netherlands. They haven't found a new raw talent like her and kinda lost the cycle of regeneration. - Badminton Clubs also took a while to recover from the crisis. In 2000-teen big club like Djarum start to have their national-circuit to catch talents but yea probably only could produce more consistent regeneration on men's side of the sport (with occasionally strong mix-double pairs). Yea that's more or less. We got last Olympic gold on Women's Double though.
Great video!! Plz make a video on womens single's players since 2010 to present which is very interesting with the fact that the competition was very high b/w the players.. Forex: Tai Tsu ying who won almost all tournaments but disappointed at the major events like world championships and olympics. P.V sindu won less tournaments but done well at majors 5 WC medals, 2 olympic medals
Omg yes, ge fei and gu jun, amazing double. As much as we love the Indonesian team, we respected them so much. A match against them was always guaranteed would be an amazing match.
Thanks you for sharing about Mia audina,i love your video. In minute 10:24 semifinal Mia audina (Indonesia) vs Kim Ji Hyung (Korea) Uber cup 1996,can you share the full video?
@@BenBeckmanBadminton helllo ben, i hope you doing well, please request from me Full video mia audina (indonesia) vs Kim Ji Hyung ( Korea) Uber cup 1996 semifinal
I hope all Indonesia badminton player who still active now watching this good example badminton player in skill and mentality who also from Indonesia. I’m very proud that Indonesia had have a wonder kid like Mia Audina. But it’s so embarassing and painfull to see Indonesia badminton player achievement nowdays. Come back stronger Indonesia!
I think age should not be a main determinant of how a player is a prodigy, mediocre or simply ordinary. Look at Chinese player Zhang Ning, she was 30 plus years old when she won her 2nd Olympic Gold Medal, , , , Intanon won her WC at such a young age, however, she could not even compete for the number1 spot, TTY is lireallycthe longest running world 1 player up to date, yet she didnt actually perform really well in her younger years [age 15-20]. Same can be said with Carolina Marin who has the most WC titles. While its true that Mia had achieved a lot at such a premature age, she is far from being a legend like Zhang Ning or TTY...
A prodigy is defined as; a young person with exceptional qualities or abilities. I agree with you though that just because someone achieves so much young doesn't mean they'll achieve even more when they are older. And likewise, just because a player doesn't achieve much before a certain age doesn't mean they'll never be good
I think a big part was down to their coach Chu Sia who was a former Asian Games champion. There are other factors I'm sure but there's no doubting Chu Sia's influence over Indonesian Women's Singles
Mia Audina and Taufik Hidayat are the youngest number 1 ever in the world (record til now) and Minion the longest number 1 in the world (record until now)
No doubt the riots in 1998 also one of the reason.. and then so many Indonesian Chinese athletes move to other countries as well...such a great loss... Until right now that damages never recovered again...
she didnt want to do that but was forced to, because she wasnt allowed to live in the netherlands and still represent indonesia. if the indonesian association had allowed that for her she would have kept playing for indonesia.
@@adolphdelatorre3102 i always hope for indonesian succes in badminton, eventho im dutch haha. my favorite mens single player is Taufik Hidayat and for womens singles its Susi Susanti (and Mia Audina). on the mens side at this moment they also do pretty well seeing the all england final. so who knows indonesia will win the olympics this year finally again since Taufik!
