I started playing around with the LR workflow when they added the local tab. Your course was very helpful to make the switch away from classic . I have fully embraced Lightroom and have never looked back. Lightroom makes it incredibly easy to manage photos while you're on trips. LR has really simplified my editing and photo storage workflow.

Thanks Matt, an excellent video as always. I switched to LR from LR Classic at the start of this year after watching one of your updates and buying your course on this. I have no regrets, and indeed have found the absence of catalogues very liberating. Keep up the good work.

Great video Matt. I’m still hoping to see Adobe add “open as layers in Photoshop” to Lr.

Thank you. I have your class, but this is a short refresher that I like. i'm not using LR full time, so refreshers help. One big motivation for me is I don't like having a catalog. Here's a nitpick on LR. I like comparing two photos. In LRC, when you look at one image in XY, and move the location you are looking at, LRC automatically moves to the same location in the other photo. Not so in LR. You have to hunt in both photos to compare the same areas. This is not a show stopper for me, but I don't understand why Adobe dropped this feature.

Thanks Matt. I appreciate your tips and tricks and can't imagine the amount of time you put into creating the content. If a topic doesn't interest me, I just skip over it. We all have different likes and tastes. That what makes life interesting. So... Thank you Matt for all you do!

I’ve been meaning to investigate the usefulness of uploading photos to the cloud in LR and this video explained it succinctly ….. thanks!

Nice review, Matt. One thing that LR Classic does that LR doesn’t is, when you sync a collection in classic, only a smart preview gets uploaded to the cloud which doesn’t take any space. With LR, it seems like the only option is to upload the full size image which is what uses your space on your Adobe Cloud. I wish you had an option to only upload a smart preview.

Matt, you’re a great instructor, I personally have learned from you for going on 15 years. I don’t know what kind of negative comments you get, but they seem to really bother you, which is a shame. There are many who can’t or won’t, who then choose to criticise or troll, please try to let it roll off. Keep up the great content.

With the help of Matt and B. Matiash LR classes, I switch from classic to LR this year and haven't looked back since. I did go with the 2TB version to keep projects in the cloud as well as my keepers but I'm loving the workflow that LR brings and no catalogs is wonderful

Thanks Matt, that was a good presentation, especially the part about using LR as a replacement for Bridge for quick editing. There are a couple of features that I can't do without in LR Classic, unless you have suggested substitutions. The first one is smart collections. I don't keyword a lot, but I do assign a genre to my photos (e.g. fine art, work, travel, family) that I use to generate smart collections for things like family albums. I use my keywords combined with metadata like the date and ratings. If there was a way to create smart albums in LR, that would be fantastic. Also, I really would like LR mobile on my iPad to have a local storage feature so that I can store my photos on Google Drive and avoid paying Adobe for cloud storage. If you could influence Adobe to provide these two features, I'd consider making the switch.

Never was a fan of the catalogue myself. It was just to mu chof a hassle to import the images when I already had them in a perfectly fine (for me) order on my Drive. So when LR included the Local I was realy happy about that. Now all I would need is the map view of LrC in LR and it would be perfect.

Thank you was immensely helpfull. I will give it n go. I only use bridge and CR. Classic was just a slept for me. I like the control i get with bridge to work from 1 browser and still be able to edit at the same time. I prefer speed and use over precision I guess. Love the community prsets, will definitely chek it out.

Great video! Learning more about Lightroom. I have two questions. 1. With the Lr version on an iPad/iPone, it has at the bottom “Device” and “Lightroom”. Is that the same as “Local” and “Cloud” on the desktop version? 2. When on travel without a laptop, I’d like to be able to download images into Lr on an iPad to begin screening/reviewing, and upon return, transfer to LrC for editing. Would you discuss a workflow for this?
@MattKloskowski
@MattKloskowski Месяц назад
Hi and thanks! 1) LR on tablet and phone do not work locally or have that option. Everything you bring in on your phone/tablet will get moved to the local drive and eat up your tablet space and will be pushed to the cloud. This makes #2 a poor workflow. If you need to be mobile, I’d suggest using a lighter laptop rather than taking an iPad and thinking that is a usable workflow today. Hope that helps.

On one hand, I hope they don't introduce a catalog system to Lightroom local. On the other hand, it may be necessary for enhanced search and versions. But then I don't use search all that much, so if they could embed versions into the xmp files... Lightroom local over my local network would then be my preference, with the cloud for when I really want to work on an album on my iPad haha

I have been playing with this version of LR and for the most part, I like it. However, there are a few quirks that really irk me - 1) when a star or flag is assigned to an image, it does not automatically move to the next image. And 2) it seems that Group into Stack is always grayed out. Perhaps some setting in Preferences is not set up appropriately?
@MattKloskowski
@MattKloskowski Месяц назад
Not sure about #2, but the feature you mention in #1 bugs the daylights out of me personally and I'm happy to not have auto advance. However, giving people an option seems like a decent idea and I'd guess we'll see it in the future.

I’ve found your #2 problem too. It is possible though to go to the menu bar (Mac) Edit/Stack and stack or unstack will work OK.

Every image I add to Lr is saves Local to a folder of my choice. - That takes care of the redundant backup issue. Every image I add to Lr is synced to LrC. - No need to use the LrC 'Import' function. That takes care of the 'no modules in Lr' issue. I just added 10 images to Lr, switched to LrC, made a Collection of those images and made a LrC SlideShow - all within 5 minutes! I exported the video then added it to Lr and it synced to LrC. The video (slideshow) is viewable via iPhone and Web! I just made a 'virtual copy' in LrC of a Lr synced image and 5 seconds later it was in the cloud (Lr). - Virtual copy issue solved! I find it quite convenient/easy to get the best of both versions(?) of Lightroom! Now if we can get Adobe to add 'sub-folders' to the Lr Local tab! 😉

nice tuto. How do you import your photos with LR ? I am windows user. Which import tool do you advise (bridge, explorer in dcim folder, photo mechanic,...) ? I am happy with now have Sony live view in LRC. No need Smartshooter or Captureone softwares anymore. I would be interested by some tutos about it in studio... I suppose Lightroom won't have this feature ?
@MattKloskowski
@MattKloskowski Месяц назад
Hi Marc. There is no catalog which means there is no import. Just point to a folder to see what’s in it.
@marclabro
@marclabro Месяц назад
Hello Matt, yes, but I was asking you how, today, you digest your sony memory card before launching lightroom (bridge,...). A pity, lightroom doesn't have any import button which copied the files to dated folders so we directly see them in lightroom without any extra operation.
@MattKloskowski
@MattKloskowski Месяц назад
Hi Marc. I attach a card reader to my computer and put the photos where I want them. It's how I've always done it and recommended others to as well. Remember, we don't want an import. That's a LRC Catalog thing. Those of us that like LR want simple. As a program, I don't want it to do more... I want it to do less. I'll put my photos where I want. Just show them, let me search them and edit them quickly when I need.

I do not use Camera Raw. However, I do want to be able to 'denoise' my file. I find Topaz AI and LRC and Photoshop 2024 do not 'denoise' successfully. Actually, sometimes it works on the face but then adds excess 'garbage' on necks, arms, etc. Is there any plan for a clean 'denoise' to happen for non-camera-raw files in the near future? Or am I missing something here?
@rickt.1109
@rickt.1109 Месяц назад
Only 1 thing keeps me from switching all the way to LR. In LR, after using LR Denoise, the program does NOT shift the image to the created .dng file. LRC does this! Because of this at times I start working on a non-denoised file. If they would change this I would be all in. I HATE the whole catalog thing!!!
@TJPowell
@TJPowell Месяц назад
You stated "no catalog", but i don't that that is accurate when you put the photos in the cloud, There is some type of catalog housed ont eh Adobe Servers someplace in the cloud. We put a lot of faith in Adobe to maintain, backup and ensure these images and catalog are maintained properly.
@MattKloskowski
@MattKloskowski Месяц назад
I guess you could say that about any company right? If you use the cloud in any way, with any company, in any program, you're putting your faith in them. If you're afraid of that, then I guess your choice is not to use it right?
@TJPowell
@TJPowell Месяц назад
@@MattKloskowski I agree. I was just bring up the point that there still is a catalog. Plus I think we need to save a local copy for back up purposes.
@MattKloskowski
@MattKloskowski Месяц назад
You’re saying there is a catalog when you don’t know that for sure. Whatever it is, it’s not a catalog in the sense of what we’re used to working with in LRC.
@LarryFasnacht
@LarryFasnacht Месяц назад
Thanks Matt. But for me no searching, and no virtual copies are deal breakers. I'm still using Classic. Also I'm sure you're aware that you can, as I do, have Classic set to automatically write xmp files. And if I remember correctly, once you put an image file on the Cloud, it breaks the link to the one on your local drive. That would mean that if I wanted to have an up to date copy locally, I'd have to copy it manually. Lightroom Classic does this automatically, though I've had so much trouble with it that I have stopped using it. I do love the "recommended presets". I wish I could get that in Classic, actually that's the only feature missing from Classic.
@MattKloskowski

Thanks Larry and I understand. Though the video was about 5 features LR has that may interest people. Not what features LR doesn’t have, which doesn’t make a very exciting video topic or help people much :-)
